More Than a Game #3

The Run Option: A Sweet Marriage of Convenience Football RomCom

Rate this book
Jason Kingsley is not who I expected to marry.

I didn’t expect to marry anyone so soon, especially not the cocky star quarterback I can’t stand.

But when my work visa expires the same day Jason and I are caught looking a little too much like a couple…I have no choice but to pretend this fake marriage is real.

Jason needs good publicity, and I need to stay in the U.S., so we’re stuck together.

Except, Jason isn’t acting like he’s stuck. He’s playing the doting husband a little too well.

The more time I spend with him, the more I begin to question if my opinions of him have been wrong this whole time. Not that it matters though, because we made a deal, and that deal does not include falling for my husband.

The Run Option is a marriage-of-convenience football romcom for fans of flirty sports romance. It has all the sizzling chemistry you love, without any of the explicit scenes. Check out the third book in the More Than a Game series, an interconnected standalone series based around four men in four different sports.

Jason and Willow were everything! This book gave me everything I wanted and then some. The banter between them was absolutely delicious. Jason flirts, Willow sassily claps back, and then—wait for it—Willow starts flirting too. Their back-and-forth had me grinning like a fool.

I’m a sucker for a good marriage of convenience story, and this one nailed it! Even though Willow didn’t realize it at first, you could totally see they were falling for each other. It was sweet, lighthearted, and the perfect blend of enemies to lovers vibes without the spice.

Annah totally nailed it again. Honestly, I can’t even pick a favorite series of hers, but this one is top-tier. If you're into sports romances, marriage of convenience, and a whole lot of fun banter, you’ve gotta pick this one up. I’m already dying for the next one!

Another touchdown for Annah Conwell. She paired my favorite sport (football) with my favorite trope (marriage of convenience) and all I want to do is reread it all over again.
Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Genre: sports romance
Content: makeouts, mild innuendo, loss of a grandparent (past), non-invested parents (present)

I loved this story! Jason and Willow both work for the Lions football team. Jason is the quarterback; Willow manages their social media accounts. Jason is constantly flirting with Willow and leaving her favorite candy for her in random places. Willow, on the other hand, is salty that Jason doesn't remember the very first time he met her. Because of that, we get a delicious one-sided hate to love story. Jason does have a bad boy rep that he's trying to move on from, and when Willow is in need of help due to a couple of unforeseen circumstances, Jason proposes marriage.

We really get to see Jason's regret over his past choices and his maturity with moving forward. It was nice to see Willow notice this as well, and see how that impacted her ability to forgive him and move on. I also liked seeing Jason's relationship with his brother, and I LOVED (loved, loved, LOVED) the time on page with the Carter and Holt families!!!

Favorite Quotes:

💰 A man should either be rich or have a good work ethic. Preferably both, but you can settle for at least one.

😏 I squint as beads of sweat get in my eyes. I lift the bottom of my practice jersey to wipe it away. When I lower the fabric, I catch Willow staring. "Did you get that on video?" I ask with a smirk. Her gaze snaps to meet mine. "In case you want to watch it back later."

🤭"I don't argue with everyone.”
"Oh I know," he says, looking down at me with sparkling green eyes. "You reserve all that sass for me."

😉 She tips her head back in exasperation. "You're incorrigible."
"I'm beginning to think you like it."
"In your dreams, Kingsley."
"Oh, definitely, future Mrs. Kingsley."

🤠 "Yes, ma'am," he drawls and unbidden heat curls deep in my abdomen at the words. Why does he have to sound like a rakish cowboy? It's annoying(ly hot).

❤️ "It's okay to be scared, but you should know you aren't in this alone. I'll take care of you, Lo, if you'll let me."

🌷 Marriage is a lot like a garden, you know. You have to get down in the dirt sometimes and pull weeds, but the work yields a beautiful reward.

👗 She hits my shoulder. "You'll be attending this party alone if you keep this up."
"You'd deprive everyone of seeing you in this dress?" I tilt my head, protectiveness flaring up within me. "On second thought, why don't you stay home. I might end up in a fight if you go out like this."

😍 "Whatever would make you happiest, Mrs. Kingsley." "You," she whispers. "You are what makes me the happiest."

I enjoyed this book quite a bit until the ending. I felt like it all wrapped up way too quickly. We went from building angst to happy ever after the end in what felt like 20 pages.

Ohhhhhh it’s feels so good to be back in my romcom era! And reading an Annah Conwell book to jump back in was the wisest choice I’ve made.

A marriage of convenience football romance is all a girl could ever want! And boy did this cutie deliver.

Willow & Jason were the cutest - and watching their unconventional love story unfold…*chefs kiss*

Football’s “bad boy” trying to prove he’s reformed and that was all in his past.
Canadian social media director who is still miffed after her FIRST interaction with aforementioned football player.
A match made in bookish heaven. 😏

I highlighted so much in my kindle - Jason was so swoon worthy & Willow was so witty and sassy! They were such a fun match!

That’s exactly what this book was…fun, flirty, fast, adorable, swoony…I just loved it!

5/5 stars for all the feels!

Really liked this one! You know I love a good marriage of convenience trope and mix it with sports romance - ✨SIGN. ME. UP!✨

Let's face it. JASON KINGSLEY THO. Such a great MMC in this book! He is my favorite MMC so far in this series. He falls for Willow first and I loved his inner monologue and their banter - but I love good snarky banter in books and THIS BROUGHT IT!

Willow does marketing for the football team. When her visa doesn't get renewed properly she is subject to being deported back to Canada in the next 60 days. When Jason is seen carrying Willow out of a party because she hurt her ankle, the press runs wild with the photos - damaging their reputation together. Jason knows Willow's situation because she had a little too much to drink and spills all her struggles to him while he takes her home. The next day, he proposes a marriage of convenience if you will - to help her be able to stay in the states to help her grandmother and keep her job - and to help his PR image.

He falls head over heels in love with her and continues to pursue her and show her he isn't the bad boy image she's thought....winning Willow's heart ain't easy though!

Annah always writes these fun characters that make you root for their relationship. All the times Jason would flirt with Willow and try to win her heart were SWOON WORTHY honestly! It made me want Willow to open up a little bit sooner though and not hold a grudge as long for their first meeting as she did. Romance was closed door, content details at the end of the review if needed.

Overall, a solid book in the series and looking forward to the next one!

Also, if you can listen to the audio of this, I HIGHLY recommend that version because the dual POV narrators are AWESOME!

Content: Closed door romance: Implied intimacy between a married couple, there are some steamy make out scenes, one of which leads to a fade to black moment. There is talk of grief, as well as neglect by parents.

3 stars Jason Kingsley is not who I expected to marry

my opinion: this was a great book. i enjoyed reading it. but it wasn’t special. just your average hallmark, rom com, book. great banter, loveable characters, besides the FMC, she was annoying, and a great atmosphere. i would say that i don’t remember anything from this book to be honest. i read way to many rom coms…

favorite character: obviously jason. one thing about sports romances are that the MMC are just ✨ perfect ✨

the plot: honestly i didnt really enjoy the plot. to me it felt rushed and boring. predictable

i did like this book and i would definitely recommend this book, but be prepared for a predictable, hallmark rom com

🏈 The vibes:
- football
- Dual pov
- He falls hard
- Marriage of convenience
- Closed door

🏈 My thoughts:
A cocky quarterback who needs good publicity and a sassy social marketing manager with an expired work visa. What’s a girl to do but to enter a marriage of convenience.

🏈 I really enjoyed this. I loved Jason’s personality. He is the classic flirty, happy go-lucky man, and I’m such a sucker for this vibe. I liked his dynamic with Willow. I liked her sass with him, and it just worked for me.

🏈 I liked seeing the other guys from this series! Them playing video games really ties the series together, and I love those moments.

🐧 The “penguins mate for life” comment just killed me. Why is that just my type of romance/flirting???? STOPPPPP. so cute. Jason was a gem- just as all of Annah’s MMCs are.

🏈 The main thing lacking here for me was just more time with the couple and more depth. I would have loved to see more of Willow and Jason getting to know eachother on a deeper level. The physical chemistry was totally there- and they had such a sweet friendship begin to bloom between them. I just wanted to know a little bit more about them and their personalities and maybe a little bit more depth with their characters.

🏈 With that said- I loved what I got, and this was a very sweet marriage of convenience to add to your list.

Similar to Just Don’t Fall by Emma St. Claire in the sports player and social media manager dynamic; and to The Rule Book by Sarah Adams for football/marriage dynamics. Lots of similarities there, but I much preferred Annah’s over The Rule Book.

Note - some elements to have a heads up on. If you get cranky about marriage of convenience being unrealistic - you’ve been warned. Also - misscommunication / misunderstanding plays a big role in the plot. Lastly, social media marketing / social media manager is FMC’s job. So there’s social media, tik tok, etc. I feel like this can be some reader’s “ick” 😂 🙈 so this is your heads up if that’s you.

Release date: December 5, 2024
Note- closed door (fade to black).

Thank you so much to Annah Conwell for the gifted copy.

The Run Option is the third book in the More Than A Game series, but I think it could easily stand alone. The series is a group of friends, with each book focusing on a different friend.

"I bet you have a gorgeous brain," he says reverently.

This book was a fast read and hilarious. A prominent theme is that our past mistakes should not define us, nor should they constantly be thrown in our face.

Read for:

🏈 marriage of convenience

🏈 he falls first

🏈 bad dates

🏈 risk of deportation

🏈enemies to more

🏈 reformed bad boy

🏈 dual POV

🏈 witty banter

🏈 The way Jason treats Willow

🏈 the nicknames

🏈Emmett and June dancing

I highly recommend this entire series and can't wait for Emmett's book!!!

The main things I disliked about this book:
The characters are supposed to be 23, but their actions, careers, maturity etc puts them at least mid 30s.

They went from hate to love incredibly quickly.

There was so much talk of how she hated him because he wronged her, but it seems that the only thing he did was forget he got her phone number? Is that such a big deal?

The way things are described seems quite juvenile? Not sure that's the word.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Okay, let me start by saying, this was a cute story and on par with all of Annah’s other books. That said, I’m afraid I have to get on a soapbox for a bit.

I’d be remiss to overlook a glaring difference between how immigration issues are looked at for this cute, spunky Canadian and how it is viewed for people seeking asylum.

Why is it that this is able to be a cute, quirky plot point for this story?
Why are we okay with the marriage of convenience trope when it’s used to keep a Canadian, or a Brit, or someone French, etc from being deported?
Why is The Proposal with Sandra Bullock such a fun movie premise?

Is it not still a federal crime?

Why do we only seem to care about that part when it applies to people who are a bit more different from us than a Canadian?

Sure, it sucks to think that this main character would have to leave her job and her grandma would need to find other care, but what she would be going to is a safe and developed nation. She would be fine. She would be safe.

Families are literally trying to escape war zones and we’re all too happy to bar their entry or to send them packing when our broken and inefficient immigration system makes it near impossible to for them seek asylum in the US.

I’m not pretending to have all of the answers. Hear me when I say, I am extremely frustrated with our immigration system, and I don’t always believe that what is “right” or “fair” lines up with the laws and systems we have in place.

I just think we should think about this. I encourage anyone who made it this far in this review to really dissect why our attitude toward these different immigration circumstances tend to be so vastly different.
We should be willing to consider the plights of people who we may not understand, and care about them at less than an arm’s distance.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Annah conwell has my heart 💝

I have read almost every book by her and loved each one and this one did not disappoint!!! In fact I would put it on the same level as the golden goal enjoyment wise (a.k.a reeeeeeeeally enjoyable)

Sooooo I looooove Jason and Willow and though I am not a huge fan of marriage of convenience she pulled it off amazingly!!!! (Thought I still do not agree with aliens marrying people just for citizenship but it's fiction so idc)

ANYWAYS IT IS A FOOTBALL ROMANCE NEED I SAY ANYTHING ELSE. the correct answer is yes I do need to rave more

HOLY COW Jason's character development!!! Going from bad boy of football to boring such a good man who actually cares abt his wife and the being wrecked when he finds out he hurt her...that shows just how much he cares about her and it was so heartwarming!! 💗💗💗💗

AND ANNAH. the way you connected it to more than a game, sweet peach AND carter brothers was genius!!!! I loved seeing everyone that I've previously read about and seeing all of the series tie together!!!!!!!!

Overall, one of the best sports romances out there and super cute I love the author so much!!!!!! 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

The Run Option by: Annah Conwell

📖NFL player Jason Kingsley needs good publicity, and Willow needs to stay in the US so they're stuck together. The problem is Jason is playing the doting husband a little too well.

This audiobook was an addicting shot of dopamine every time I hit play.

🔍You'll Find
-NFL games
-Marriage of Convenience
-Enemies to more
-Confident FMC

💬I thought
-Annah Conwell consistently outdoes herself
-I enjoyed how characters from other books pop up in her stories

♥️I loved
- both narrators were fantastic
-He falls first
-reformed rake turned cinammon roll.
-Jason is so stinking sweet. A bad boy wealthy NFL quarterback surprising Willow with small acts of kindness melted me 🫠🫠
-Toe curling kisses. That second kiss was 🔥🔥

I was actually frustrated that my real actual life (like showering) interrupted this story 🤣

Love, love, love this one!

Some cute moments, but I had the same problem with this one as the other one I read in the series... the ages of the characters do not match the life experience and maturity. She says these people are 23 years old, and the math DOES NOT ADD UP. There's no way these people are so advanced in their careers and talking about their past as if they are 35. And some of her descriptions were just a little too cringy for me.

But even though there was some stuff that bothered me, I am a sucker for marriage of convenience. Giving it three stars because I finished it and genuinely liked some parts.

If you want to smile, giggle, and swoon, Annah's love stories are the perfect choice. I love the marriage-of-convenience trope, and this tale of reformed playboy Jason and sweet 'n sassy Willow falling in love is a lighthearted delight. Catch up on the rest of the series ("The Golden Goal" and "The Perfect Putt") in anticipation of "The Run Option," coming out December 5th! My thanks to Annah for the ARC!

A marriage of convenience between a former-bad-boy football player and his team's social media manager where she dislikes him at first but he doesn't? Say no more.

I was honestly so scared that I wouldn't love this one like I did the other books before it in the series, but I'm so glad I stuck around until the end.

I loved how it both gave off a sports romance vibe as well as a cowboy romance vibe with Jason's horses and cozy property. I also loved how there were times where I had literal heart eyes over how sweet a number of scenes were! The sweetness definitely lived up to the amount I was expecting (in a good way!), but the spice was cranked up higher while still being in the closed-door lane.

That said, I do wish that there was closure with Willow's whole visa situation, which was the reason why she said yes to the marriage in the first place. Also, I wasn't entirely convinced on Jason being a "reformed bad boy." There were lots of times it was mentioned, but I guess I would have loved to read more scenes proving that.

Still, I really enjoyed this one, and I'm super excited to jump into the next books in this series!

tw: grief; mentions of death and infidelity (not between the MCs)

I’m all about a cute sports romance and this one had so many tropes that I adore. When Willow’s work visa expires, a marriage of convenience idea is hatched by football star, Jason–a man she both admires and hates with a passion. There’s nothing more delicious than the tension of a “forced” relationship with all the enemies-to-love vibes.

I listened to this one and couldn’t devour it quickly enough. Willow is solid and strong, and it drives her to no end of crazy to have to rely on the former bad boy of the NFL. Jason plays his part of the affectionate husband quite well…a little TOO well…and had me melting faster than butter on a hot summer sidewalk.

The banter and the fake-it-until-you-make-it attitudes that oozed all the scrumptious chemistry were the ultimate treat. Annah Conwell continues to deliver win after win with this series. I borrowed a copy on Libby.

Content: mild romance
