Kiss Me When I’m Dead Death is the New Black Femme Fatale Bitter Almonds & Jasmine Acid Yellow
Dominic Piper is a bestselling author living in London.
Dominic Piper is an author, film and television writer, journalist and script editor. He lives in London, UK. He is the author of the best-selling, critically acclaimed thrillers Kiss Me When I'm Dead, Death is the New Black, Femme Fatale, Bitter Almonds & Jasmine, and Acid Yellow, all featuring the enigmatic, London-based private investigator Daniel Beckett. All five novels are published by Opium Den Publishing.
A slow start, but don’t let that fool you. It started about chapter three. But if you haven’t read any in this series you will find D.I. Daniel Beckett is an interesting character. The story is set in and around central London and really contains a lot of soft porn. Seduction, but not yuk. Kind of sets up the characters nicely. The story line? Well what can I say. Damsel in distress as all good P.I. Detective stories are. Almost Pulp Fiction genre, but more Noir given the levels of violence behind the plot. Once the story gets going following the action as the dots slowly get connected is really interesting. A tight story with an interesting writing style. The other four in the series make for a good series, each book a standalone story, only the protagonist connecting them.
When Daniel Beckett is employed to solve a two year old kidnap and murder, it looks like an impossible task. The police and three other PIs have failed, the motive is unknown, and the trail is ice cold. As ever, Mr Beckett slowly untangles the web, while entangling himself with an unmanageable number of women, and several, unpleasant and sleazy men. A thoroughly enjoyable read, with a satisfying ending.
Very good story bit gory but this seems to be author style .lots of action and twists and turns..some times the main character gets too involved in what he’s seeing but again it’s the style of the character.look forward to seeing more books 😊
'Acid Yellow' was the first book by Dominic Piper that I've read and I know it won't be the last. I'm eager to try other books of his after reading this one. In this one, Kiaraa Jeong is a famous classical pianist but she is kidnapped and brutally murdered. After trying hard to get justice for her for two years , her sister Micha, a corporate honcho, approaches Daniel Beckett.
Now Daniel takes some getting used to. He has a easy, laidback style of working, is unflappable, humorous in every situation and is a big flirt. No woman escapes his eye but he does not allow his flirtations to divert him from relentlessly trying to pursue Kiaraa's killers who have left a cold path after two years with almost no clues to follow.
Dominic Piper's writing is engaging, there is great attention to details. He seems to be an aficionado of perfumes and his character Daniel can identify the perfumes that all characters wear, man or woman- I found that quirk cute.
Dominic's writing brought Kiaraa Jeong to life as Daniel Beckett learns more about her as he investigates the case and interacts with people in her life who loved her or hated her. Her personality is acid yellow and the author uses broad brushstrokes to describe a woman when he could have left us merely with a caricature of a dead woman. A who once lived life so brightly and effervescently that we are left dazzled by her presence throughout the book.
The plot is dynamic and moves along at a pace that is relentless relieved only by Daniel's endless escapades with women. Dominic's writing is suspenseful and action packed and will leave you wanting to find out what happens next as Daniel's tenacity unravels clues one by one. A must read this one.
It's been a while since the last Daniel Beckett thriller, but boy - was this worth the wait! In Acid Yellow, Beckett steps in to try and solve the murder of a female Korean classical musician two years after the event. The police have had no luck, and the murdered musician's sister (the powerful CEO of a Korean electronics concern called Sansuyu, with offices in London) has tried three private investigation agencies, to no avail. But she senses something different in Beckett, so gives him the job. Right from the beginning, his approach is focussed and unconventional, and he soon starts to make progress. The twists and turns in the plot will keep you turning the pages, and the story is packed with the usual smart, witty dialogue that you'd expect from Dominic Piper. The characters are fantastic! Readers of the other books will recognise regulars like computer hacker Doug Teng, and Aziza Elserafie, the libidinous psychiatrist from Death is the New Black, makes a spectacular (and libidinous) reappearance. Equally entertaining are fashion photographer Florian Pöck and hilarious criminal computer whizz Krysia Hodak. On a more serious side, there's a reflection/critique of the everyday violence and aggression that women are the constant victims of in everyday life - some of it serious, some of it not so serious, but all of it oppressive. The eroticism is turned up quite a bit, as well. In one chapter (you'll know it when you get to it), I found myself thinking 'Oh, no! Surely not!'. All in all this is a superb genre-busting modern thriller that will take you on an incredibly exciting ride. Can't recommend it enough!
Like a few other people who've discovered this author and his amazing thrillers, I've never been a great thriller fan, and I don't know that I'd have come across his work unless someone had recommended it to me. This book is the fifth in the series featuring the exploits of the extraordinary London-based private investigator Daniel Beckett, and, like the others, is totally brilliant. It's almost a cold case story, but in Piper's hands, it transcends that genre and becomes something else entirely. Fabulously well-written, smart, witty, knowledgeable, thrilling and, in parts, pretty erotic. I won't give out any spoilers, but suggest you read this if you want a damn good time!
I hadn't really read detective thrillers until I read Dominic Piper's first book in this series, Kiss Me When I'm Dead, and I became a convert to the genre!
His fifth and latest book, Acid Yellow, lived fully up to my expectations. I enjoy Mr. Piper's writing style - the plot keeps twisting, the dialogue is witty, and there is the unmistakable signature sensual undercurrent.
A solid five stars to Dominic Piper and to Daniel Beckett!
