Scientific Method Universe #1.1-1.6 or 1 of series

The Scientific Method: The Complete Miniseries

Rate this book
Will Derrie has a problem. He's twenty-one years old and there's something terribly wrong with him.

He doesn't like sex.

He wants to like sex, but even when he's totally into his girlfriends, he still has to run a movie in his head to get through having sex with them. And the movie? So not okay. (His imaginary mistress spanking his ass really doesn't go well with his real-life girlfriend whispering sweet nothings in his ear.)

When his twin brother Adam accidentally stumbles upon his search history, Ads decides that Will needs an intervention. With a dominatrix. Oh, and also, the dominatrix's mysterious (and way less scary) friend Hugh.

Is it friends-with-benefits? A romance? A bromance, but with floggers? Will doesn't know. But whatever it is? Fucking hot.

The Scientific Method is an erotic miniseries, told in six episodes. The complete miniseries is a little over 60,000 words, or about 175 pages.

I've decided I want my reviews of this series all in one place, so I'm writing something general first and then there will be thoughts to the single books, maybe like a journal...

This series is like nothing I've ever read and I find it to be most rewarding and very important for me right now. It shows the different aspects of love and relationships, how you can love more people than one at a time and how every relationship is unique and neither better nor worse than another.

I love how intimate this series is and find myself to be very much like Will in this regard with his intimacy kink. We are so close to every character. We get to know there innermost thoughts and fears and love. This is so precious to me and I'd daresay it helps me learn and grow.

This series is like the hottest. Ever. Seriously, it is off the charts. I'd never thought I'd be into this so much, to be honest.

I am so very grateful I've found this series.

The Scientific Method, The Complete Miniseries

So, wow... This book caught me off guard.

Um, BDSM is usually not my thing. I'm not against it but I won't go looking for it.

Erotica... I'm the same there. You know, often too much sex, not enough of the rest.

Turns out BDSM erotica can be totally my thing, though.

I kinda devoured this. It was off the charts hot, of course, but moreover, the relationship between those two guys was pretty captivating, too.

O lala, was this scorching hot. Scorching.

I loved how Will and Hugh were equals and bantered and both learned something and grew in this story.

I loved that there was not the one way for (BDSM) sex, how everything depends on likes/dislikes. I love that dominant did not equal top by definition etc.

That ending, tho... caught me off guard, too. Because I'm conditioned in a certain way by romance books, I think. And I seriously don't like that I am, and I don't want to be.

Don't get me wrong this is a nice happy ending to the story. It's just not undying love declarations and getting married and things.

I am intrigued and excited but also, um, challenged by how the series seems to process from here. But I plan to find out more.

Hugh's New Dude

This was insane. Madness. Hugh Reynolds didn’t fall in love. Hugh Reynolds didn’t lose control, not over his emotions, not over anything. But what he wanted more than anything—alone, in his house, cleaning up, getting ready for the week—was for Truman’s presence, and voice, and scent.

Oh, I’m so into this series by now :) I mean, the sex is really off the charts hot—I’m embarrassed to admit, it was so hot I made whimpering noises at one point—but it’s so much more than kink. Much, much more.

The characters and their relationships are lovely. They have depths, there is development, and best of all, there is no annoying angst, which is the best!

While I was a bit surprised about the alternative relationship concept or boundaries in the first book, I’m actually loving this quite a bit now. Strike that. I’m loving it a lot. And since this is quite the rare occurrence in romance books, I can’t wait to read more.

Kris won my trust with this book, because ze did not make it angsty—very important point for me ;-) —and because what ze does with sex, relationships, and characters feels right to me. It feels loving.

I’m excited that there is so much more to discover in this series.

What I think could be better is that I sometimes lose track of who is talking and that is, um, confusing. And in parts, this book felt a bit (!) rushed.

I’m gonna leave you with what I think is one of the best, speak funniest, love declarations I’ve read: “I love you. Now go back to threatening me with the knife.”

These first two books are by now republished in one: Catalysts: The Scientific Method

Unexpected Gifts

Reading this series makes me happy—and, um, other things ;-)

Will and Hugh and Truman together are just W.O.W. I can't even...

Will and Moll :) Ohhhhh :))) I like them together! A lot!

The sex/kink is... This was me while reading, so you get a better picture:

Okay, being a bit more series now. *clears throat* You should read this series. It's a wonderful, rare exploration of love and sex and kink that does not fit into standard romance arcs.

That's amazing! And freeing and, seriously, I want to read more books like these, where love and sex are freely, lovingly shared, where love comes in different shades.

There's a missing scene on Kris's website that you should not miss because it's fucking awesome! Fun With Plugs.

Take Three Breaths

Next book now.

Love this whole series so much.

The relationship developments in this instalment were great.

The sex—as always—scorching hot. Also different.

Breaking Down

This one was tough in parts and even uncomfortable and I feared at one point... But it was for naught! Because Hugh is the best :)

I'm so happy to be able to read their story. I'm even grateful because I feel like I'm learning something, like I'm witnessing something precious and important.

Roller Coasters

[Will:] I love them. A lot. And it’s gonna sound weird, but sometimes they’re my kinky friends, and they tie me up and fuck me rough. And sometimes they’re sweet and I cry and they make me feel better. And sometimes they’re my family. But it’s not like they take me away from you, or from anyone. They just are.

[Hugh:] Your presence adds something without taking anything away.

This is the most beautiful thing!

I really liked Davey. I like to think that Will and Davey were good together and were good for each other, also in the long run, although it didn't work out as they had hoped or thought. I wish Davey will find what he is looking for. Note to self: I must see if there is more about him or ask Kris about it
I could relate a lot to Will being attracted to androgynous people.

Such a wonderful next part in their story. So great to see that Will little by little feels less like an intruder.

I loved the venturing into new kinks. Seriously, I believe by now that Kris could write everything and I'd think it awesome and hot.

The best description I can think of?

Waffle.

This is the kind of super-cutesy writing with super-immature characters, who're actually already well into adulthood and their third decade, which drives me up the wall.

Thanks, but no thanks.

This series is lovely. It is simulteaneously a complete fantasy getaway into this very kinky and fundamentally kind universe, but also with some of the real'est dynamics between characters I have ever read. All of the sadists are kind to the core in their motivations (even if it doesn't come naturally to all of them, which makes it even better for me), and I can't say how much I love that. That’s why I'm giving this all of the stars. Is it perfect? Certainly not. But it is a very rare, beautifully imperfect gem.

I PASS The Scientific Method was a big disappointment for me. I don't know what I expected but I certainly didn't expect two silly men to stand around and have silly conversations over and over and over again. I mean every time it felt like - yes they're going to start the story, when it was getting hot, when it's going to develop they would start talking about the same thing over again and over again. I was just underwhelmed and let down. When we got to the ending I was so annoyed if it hadn't been on Kindle I would've tossed it across the room. There is a sequel I will definitely pass on.

In theory this gay for you erotic fiction piece of bdsm smut sounded fantastic, if only the author's writing style had been more to my liking. To be frank, it absolutely drove me boinkers, especially when Hugh, the dom, spoke in his 1920s Downton Abbey manner. Also, it took ages for the actual sex to happen, and let's be honest, I read this book because I wanted some hot man on man action which I only got a little bit of in the ending. Before that there was a lot of flogging and spanking and talking about restraints but no actual sex, in my opinion. D+

I LOVE HUGH.

I'll maybe get to a deeper review but I am back on line after a month and apparently I forget how to write good things.

The taking virginity and Hugh's mouth were my downfall with this series.

I hearted it! Big time

A review by The Blogger Girls.

Why did I wait so long to read this? I absolutely loved it! It pulled me right in. Don’t let the blurb scare you – there are little to no girl bits in this series, even when there are girls playing important roles. Those scenes that are needed for the story are not detailed and totally saved for Will’s time with Hugh (and later Truman). You will not be disappointed, I assure you.

I fell in love with sweet Will. He is so worried about his need or interest in kinkier sex/submission that it is having a very negative affect on his life and relationships with girls. When his brother takes him to meet Lucy, and her friend Hugh, a dominatrix and dom, he is still very apprehensive. Desperate, he decides on the lesser of two evils and calls Hugh, even though it is a girl he wants to be dominated by.

Hugh is fabulous. He sees Will’s struggle, wants to help and keeps things very professional knowing Will is a straight troubled submissive boy. These two connect better than most guys I read about. It is through their connection that the trust really grows as Hugh pushes Will’s boundaries and needs little by little. They take their time exploring Will’s submission, finding things that work and things that don’t. Their friendship grows, but they eventually take things further, both knowing that they aren’t really each other’s “one.” Will is somewhat accepting being bisexual but has adamant plans of finding the perfect girl. Unfortunately, he is only ever comfortable enough with Hugh, or Hugh is the only one capable thus far, of getting Will to truly express his desires. They form a very unique relationship that isn’t going away any time soon, regardless of who they end up with.

I devoured this book. The characters and dialog is fabulous, each character having their own distinct way of speaking, behaving, etc. I had no doubt about their feelings towards each other and was happy their relationship would continue even if their lives were changing. This will probably be one of my favorite BDSM stories for a very long time. I can’t wait to continue with this wonderful story and highly recommend you do as well. This first book is made up of six episodes that I was very thankful were compiled in one book. When I finished, I rushed right into the next book in this series, which is also free on Kris Ripper’s site. This book is free there also, as well as on Amazon, so you have nothing to lose.

This book! Extremely well paced--a page turner, a vivid image and scene maker, even if that promise of breath play never materialized. And the addressing of poop issues? *slow, respectful clapping* Hell-o, thank you. Christ, why is this rare in romance?

Hugh and Will were both strong, competent, fully developed men who were unusually good at analyzing themselves and each other (with the exception of the ridiculous idea that Will was a "straight boy"). The author kept it steamy, real steamy, but with a believable and tense build up of attraction and friendship, plus--thank you--no excessive sex scene repeats and therefore no diminishing returns and wandering attention. Whew, those imagination scenes they both made with mere words, huh, Oscar?! Holy hot balls.

The ending was phenomenally disappointing, only because it was hard for me to believe and felt somewhat of a betrayal. The investment I had in these men and their incredibly strong intimacy... tsk, it seemed like a kick in the face, a fuck-you-ha-ha-gotcha waste. It was odd that they were okay with a looser, non traditional friendship. But then, I strongly believe there is a cycle (and types of endings, after growth) to the importance and "use" of each person who enters an individual's life. So, I could work myself up to believing. Still....

When I read the blurbs for the rest of the series (which are serious spoilers--so don't do it), I was not inspired to immediately read the rest. (Thankfully, the story does go on--it needs to--since there is no resolution to either man's romance.) I may check them out later because the author's character creation and development were stellar, but yeah, no fuck-me-I-gotta-read-now desire.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This book was selected for me for the Comfort Zone Challenge and if I'm honest, I was not happy about the selection at first. I was in the mood for something with a strong romance theme and I wanted a HEA. Reading the blurb for this book, I immediately worried that I wasn't going to get either. Add to that, the mention of so many females in such a short blurb and I was terrified. I even skipped ahead to the next book in the series to read that blurb and I could kick myself for doing that. It completely ruined this book for me because I knew, before I even read a single page, So DO NOT REPEAT MY MISTAKES!

I read on anyway and I am so glad that I did. This book is not a romance, but it is filled with such great friendship and love that it is still romantic. What Will and Hugh have is beautiful, and so perfectly unique to them. I enjoyed watching Will blossom and embrace his sexuality under Hugh's hands almost as much as I enjoyed watching Hugh embrace a level of intimacy he is not usually so willing to share. I can't wait to grab books 2, 3, and 4 in this series because I need to know what comes next!

I'm conflicted about this "dude dominatrix" term. It's bad, definitely, but is it so bad it's funny? I don't know if it's quite there. I'd like to get all self-righteous on his ass, like "wow, how stupid and ignorant of you," but on a more objective note, that is the sort of stupid hyperbolic shit people will say and keep saying, even after learning otherwise. It's the playing up the cluelessness for melodrama/humor thing.
Having read far more M/M than het, though, it's a bit odd to see "dominatrix" as a previously recognized term, but not knowing any sort of __ counterpart term.

Slow burn.

And that's about it for comments I made while reading. I actually thought about commenting. Not in a "I should comment" way; literally thought "oh, yeah, commenting." That was...sometime in pt 5? But I dunno, I just wasn't feeling like commenting.

It's...well, it's kind of bleak, isn't it? All of the implied future heartbreak for Hugh.

I dunno, I hate series where there's a new love interest each installment. Like in various thrillers *cough cough* Dan Brown *cough* Robert Langdon *clears throat*. ...and, I dunno, it kind of seems like it might be headed that way. Which is, well, depressing.

Extremely welcome surprise, this one. The people, the setting, the story, the writing, all of it.

How come it's got so few ratings? Highly recommended for the lover of M/M Kink. Excuse me while I go buy the next one, Hugh's New Dude.

This one started weak. I almost didn’t read past the first several pages, because the beginning of Will’s journey felt contrived and uncomfortable-not-in-a-good-way. His twin brother Adam discovers his BDSM search history so schedules an appointment for him with a dominatrix, which he then attends with him? It just read strange and off-putting. But as the storyline became more about Will and Hugh sans Adam, it got better.

There was nothing earth shattering about the plot, which was fine. Curious would-be sub getting a little training from an experienced dom, ostensibly not as a relationship thing, but as an experiment. The intimacy that developed between them was the strongest part of the story for me. It well demonstrated a d/s relationship where they both had power over the other in different ways.

The character development wasn't bad, but it felt kind of half-baked. I got a decent picture in my mind of who the two MCs were to start out with, but I wanted more evolution, especially from Will. The aw-shucks thing got pretty old for me by the middle of the book. His character could have maintained an endearing level of naiveté without the same surprise factor he had from the beginning. Too many exclamations points took me out of the moment. Truth be told, I would have DNF’d when this annoyance started if I hadn't been all in by then, for the hottest parts which HAD to be coming up. So to speak. And I wasn’t disappointed there; it didn’t suck. So to speak.

I was happy about the ending...

The BDSM here is pretty much kink-for-beginners, so don’t expect that to be off the charts. 3 stars is still a “recommend” from me, so if this sounds like it’s up your alley, go for it! ;)

For me this book was highly original and delved into areas most would shy from. I think most can relate to the emotional roller coaster the main character, Will, felt. He’s not getting what he wants from sex, and he thinks he would enjoy it more if there was some pain involved. Thanks to his brother’s coaxing, he explores his desires. Who hasn’t wanted to try something that they think most would judge them for? If it isn’t normal, it’s wrong, right?

I think that’s why this book works. We can relate to Will. He is straight, but can’t afford a woman dom. So he ends up with a gay dom who is willing to whip him for a few hours, in exchange for yard work. Then Will starts to fall for his gay dom, which I think is natural, since he’s satisfying his dark needs.

The twist at the end of the book is, there is no happily ever after. They don’t end up as a couple. To me, this makes the book all the more real. How often does a sexual relationship end up in a happily ever after? Not often. Instead these characters grow and learn from each other, then move on.

Will is a straight college student living in Oakland, who has a problem. He only achieves orgasms by fantasizing about Mistress England, his idea of what a dominatrix is. The problem is it affects his relationships with vanilla sex type girls. His twin brother Adam introduces Will to Dommes Lucy and Hugh, to help with his need of wanting to be dominated. Hugh offers to help Will approach his kinks by scientific method. They start by doing yard work, talking and progress over time to flogs, whips and paddles...oh my. As the friendship grows, so does the attraction, both ways, leading to eventually a consummation of affection. After graduating from college, Adam and Will move to Santa Barbara for job opportunities. When they move, the relationship between Will and Hugh is left open to further encounters. The book in my opinion is not a stand alone, so don't expect a HEA.
This is an author that is definitely worth keeping your eye on.

I've just re-read The Scientific Method for the nth time. I suddenly had a longing to read again about Hugh and Will meeting.

I generally prefer to read novels guaranteed to have a HEA, or a solid HFN, however some authors and some series get past this with me by being so excellent and having enough emotional intimacy between me and the characters and/or between the characters themselves that far from regretting reading their books, I actively seek them out to re-read. It doesn't hurt that there's various moments of love and requitement (thank you OED for confirming that that's a word!) throughout the various novels in this series.

What I see in this novel is gradual self-acceptance, primarily in a younger man getting to understand that exploring what actually turns him on is alright, even if it's not just pure vanilla. And of a (slightly) older man (who is far more experienced in honestly seeking out the kind of sex that turns him on) accepting that it's alright for him to be attracted to the younger man whom he originally offered to platonically help sample the world of domination and impact play. The secondary characters aren't just wallpaper in this series, and I'm happy to say will have further (and sometimes starring) roles to play.

Kris Ripper seems to me (utterly inexperienced in this field in real life as I am!) to write honest and plausible reactions and interactions for her characters. They don't tend to just dive straight into the deep end in terms of kink, or if they do, not without potential emotional or psychological whiplash.

There's something so fresh to me in Kris Ripper's writing that I'm genuinely excited to read anything that they've written.

I don't know if it's "normal" to do this, but I have a tendency to go straight from greatly admiring an author to thinking that I would love to marry them. (Is this a product of growing up a woman in a patriarchal society that marrying someone whose work I admire, and quietly standing behind them to support them, is a female-life-goal?!) However that mental list has come about, Kris is solidly on it!

I adored this.
The first few pages could've got either way for me. But I really fell in love with these characters. And Hugh was fab. I loves the writing & the wit. And that it wasn't a traditional HEA. I think this is probs the firs time I've picked up a romance vein book & not had them end up coupled in the traditional sense. The whole were friends & we have sex & are affectionate but don't want to get married or be 'together' thing really worked for me. In an ideal world for me they'd have just not fancied marriage with anyone ever but that's me imposing myself into the story. I really appreciated this book, it was everything and more. Also it's kinda bloody rare to find d/S stories in which the emotional & scene aspects are more so extrapolated on than the sexual. Which isn't to say this isn't hot, there's plenty of sex but that happens latter once these two people have got to know one another.
I'm definitely reading more Kris Ripper after this!

Wow! Sexy BDSM stuff, no extraneous plot additions or unnecessary angst. Love the way author draws characters. Great conversation writing as well, sometimes the talk was more erotic than the action. In fact I sometimes needed to take a break from the emotional intensity more than the physical. I picked up this one because I wanted something smexy - I got SO MUCH more! I loved Will & Hugh together, but when Truman entered the picture I about melted.
One small issue for me was that the third person multiple POV writing style was, at times confusing as to whose head I was supposed to be in. I love dual POV as it allows me to get into the character’s mind, an important feature in stories based on the character’s emotions & thoughts. I cannot wait to get my hands on more from this author!

this felt very very ficcy

in a good way! fanfic will do this sort of absolute laser focus on two characters and the particulars of their relationship to the exclusion of all else that is much less common in conventional fiction

anyways this'll basically hit the same spot reading some 50k m-rated very popular shipfic on ao3 would

Kudos to Kris Ripper for completely ruining my work day and turning me into a nonproductive pile of goo!
Why? You ask...
Because I started the tale of Will and his intimacy kink and Hugh with his shrink kink and couldn't put the damn book down; or in this case - turn the Kindle off.
I adore Will and want my own Hugh. Seriously. I'm in love, big time.
Okay, enough gushing...
The writing was well done (some errors, but not enough to ruin anything, and I'm picky as hell). The quick witted dialog is beyond enjoyable, entertaining, and all around funny as fuck. The domination and sex-not-sex scenes are hot, and if I could get the hubs to read it so I could say "There! That right there! Be my Hugh!!" I would. But he might get squeamish. He's definitely more an Adam than a Will. But I'll work on him.
Regardless. I plan to get the next book.
But not tonight. I seriously need to get some work done tomorrow.

What a great story! Very different and very interesting! Will is a 21-year-old guy who isn't enjoying the sex he's having with his girlfriends. He's dreaming of being dominated - the nice, sweet girls just aren't doing anything for him. His brother finds his google search history on kinky sex and introduces him to a female Dominatrix, who then introduces him to Hugh, a male Dom. Although Will isn't gay, he decides to try things out with Hugh, mostly as a science experiment - seeing if he likes to submit, be flogged, restrained, etc. As they spend more time with each other, Hugh finds himself having feelings for the young, straight boy. This was such an interesting journey for both of these guys - Will ends up much stronger and braver than Hugh ever thought. And Hugh starts to open up and let Will into his life. I'm looking forward to reading the next chapter in Hugh's life!

This review is for The Scientific Method #1, the collection of 6 episodes. (SM#2 picks up after the conclusion of this collection, but continues with the same characters, plus Truman, who is also wonderful.)

Kind of a Fifty Shades of Gray with guys and much, MUCH better writing. I was so enchanted by this that I read the last page and then flipped to the beginning so I could read it again. The characters are terrific and I wasn't ready to part with them. (I have since discovered and read other books in the series. But, #1 easily stands alone.) Also, the dialog (and internal dialog) is hilarious and realistic. Kris Ripper does an excellent job of building the intimacy-friendship-relationship between the two main characters.

LOVED IT. I was hooked on the whole series after reading this book. It took me a minute to get into the groove with the whole thing, but after I did and could get a good grasp on where I thought the author was going, I couldn't get my hands on the rest of the series fast enough.

Well written, well developed characters each with their own idiosyncrasies. I'm not going any further into depth because I hate reviews with giant spoilers. That and after reading the whole series, I honestly can't remember where one book ends and the next starts. Ze Ripper makes this whole series just sort of flow as if it's all one very well written, very long book. Of course, it can be broken up and read separately, but I guarantee, after you start, you'll want the whole thing!

I adore Will and Hugh (and even Ads). This series is so well written with the shrink-kink and intimacy kink. I loved the vulnerability of Will and Hugh and the sheer joy in their relationship, the starts and stops, the negotiating of the bdsm. This book is hot, I cared about these characters and read the full series in two days. I highly recommend this whole series, this one is just the beginning of Will and Hugh's adventures, and the whole 'cast' are beautifully created, strong and flawed, Kris Ripper is a brilliantly gifted author.
