They say those who can, do. And those who can’t, teach. The latter is true for me.
But it’s through my many failed relationships that I found my true breaking up couples that never should have gotten together in the first place. While that probably sounds more than a little unorthodox for a couple’s therapist, I stand by the services I provide.
That is until I’m hired to do a deep dive on a client’s boyfriend, which goes the complete opposite as planned. Not only does said boyfriend seem more interested in me than he should be, but I’ve discovered he’s actually part of an organized crime ring, making me look guilty by association.
Which leads me to Mason Harris, the FBI’s golden boy. He’s annoyingly protective as well as being a walking red flag…and insists we work together to put the bad guys behind bars and clear my name. The more I push, the more he pulls, and I’m having a hard time fighting my attraction.
I always win the breakup games, but now I find myself purposely wanting to lose.

MC: Mira (FMC), Mason (MMC) Setting: Chicago Genres: Contemporary Romance Tropes: Enemies to Lovers, Protective MMC, Strong FMC, Flirty Banter, Second Chance at Finding Love Triggers: physical and emotional spousal abuse, PTSD Epilogue: Yes
Synopsis: Mira works as a couples therapist, mostly helping couples realize their relationship is not salvageable. She also has a podcast and moonlights as an amateur PI, testing the fidelity of her clients’ significant others by flirting with them. While going undercover to flirt with the potential boyfriend of a new client, Mira discovers he lied about many things, but most importantly his name. Her fake date turns out to be a mafia guy, under investigation of the FBI for the suspected killing of multiple people. Mason, the lead FBI agent investigating this mafia guy, approaches Mira with a proposal to work with him by fake dating this guy further with the hope he reveals information. Mira agrees and begins to fake date the mafia guy, while becoming friendly and enjoying working with Mason. Mira is apprehensive about starting any relationship because she was badly burned by her ex-husband. Mason also enjoys spending time with Mira, but has never been a relationship kind of guy. The investigation takes a dangerous turn when the mafia guy seems to be completely infatuated with Mira and starts following and pushing her. Mason has to step in and rescue Mira from an almost disastrous situation. Throughout this intense and high emotional time, Mira and Mason decide to go all in and give a relationship between them a try.
Thoughts: This book had such a fun concept. I really admired Mira’s confidence in herself throughout her book. You can tell from her flashbacks how far she has come and grown as a person in her recovery from her past traumatic relationships. I have followed Emily since Cheat Codes, and can’t help but notice the similarities in character and personal growth she has with Mira. I imagine this book was very cathartic to write, and it shows through the strong emotions emitting throughout the story. It’s been awesome to see her get her life back and gain some happiness. Mason seemed like the perfect match for Mira. Not only did they have great chemistry, but his easy going and charming personality was what Mira needed. He could keep her at ease and diffuse situations in a respectable manner. He respects her work and dedication, and loved her flirty and confident personality from the beginning. I’m so glad they were able to overcome their insecurities and go all in on a relationship. I look forward to the rest of the series, and wonder if it’s more of Mason and Mira, or stories based on her friend group.
Another amazing book by Emily Goodwin that takes the breath out of you. Breakup Games is a captivating novel that intertwines humor, romance, and suspense, drawing loosely from the author’s own life experiences. The protagonist, a couple’s therapist with a unique talent for ending relationships that should never have begun, finds herself in an unexpected and thrilling predicament on one of her jobs. Meeting Mason turns her life around in ways she would never have expected. While Mira’s story is just beginning, you fall in love with her character and her past experiences that made her what she is today.
The writing is sharp and witty, filled with clever dialogue that enhances character interactions. The pacing is brisk, ensuring that readers remain hooked from start to finish. A very easy book to read that leave you wanting for more.
Break up games was a great read I’ve always ❤️ Emily’s work. We finally get masons story and it didn’t disappoint me. The fmc Mira is a therapist that also moonlights as an unofficial pi 🕵️ trying to catch her clients significant others in the act. She also has posted from her own past abusive relationship. Mason is an fbi agent that acts Mira to him catch a mobster criminal by fake dating him. The build up to the story was it flowed well together. Having met mason in Rory book I couldn’t wait for his story. Can’t wait for more in this series.
Breakup Games is the first book in the new Heartbreak Society series by Emily Goodwin. It's a story about Mira, a couples therapist by day, private investigator by night, and Mason, an FBI agent. Both of them are trying to take down mafia family member Enzo Moretti, for different reasons. I loved the premise of the story, and Mira and Mason's chemistry and attraction towards each other was undeniable. I really enjoyed this one and would definitely recommend it.
4 and half I was lucky enough to be a beta reader of this book I found Emily writing style very relaxed. The fact that she put I little bit of her life was very inspiring. I appreciate Mira’s arc because she understands what love truly is and so it is a positive message in this world full of bad representations of “love”. I think the book could have been I little longer but honest I preferred a too short book than a too long
While I enjoyed the general story and the characters, I found it to be a bit underwhelming especially knowing the type of writing the author has given us before.
Mira and Mason are strong, well written characters and I would’ve loved a bit more of them before the rushed ending. Either way I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
Great read, from the beginning to the end. Loved all the twists and turns the story had. Filled with humor, suspense and definitely some heat! Can't wait for what comes next in the series!
5 STARS FOR BREAKUP GAMES!! Yay....Mira and Mason put a smile on my face. They gave us all the feels with lots of suspense and craziness. I absolutely enjoyed this fast paced story, I can't wait for the next book in the series.
The story line was good, felt short though. Lots of sentence errors and even characters name errors. It was annoying to read with h so many, but I hung in there because I wanted to finish the series
