Manga Matrix presents an easy grid method for mastering manga, an increasingly popular comic style. Using this unique Japanese system, artists can plot and cross-section elements on a matrix diagram to create an infinite number of original characters, creatures, and multiformed beasts. Angels, demons, dragons, monsters, and robots are all included in this book, along with descriptions of costumes and personalities for each.
Manga Matrix is unlike any other manga instructional guide and is an invaluable resource for both the budding artist and the polished professional.
I saw this book a long time ago and begged my mother to buy this. At that time, I wanted to be a manga artist. This book is not meant to be a how-to-draw book. It's a book that teaches you how to think creatively and I love it for that. It has a lot of inspiring tales and drawings, as well as how the matrix/grid system works.
At first glance, it might seem disappointing or even confusing as to how it can even help you. But as I went on my career as an artist, I use a similar system to the one they presented and I still glance on it from time to time if I want to feel inspired.
It's not for everyone but this certainly helped me a lot nourish my creative side.
MAnga Matrix by Hiroyoshi Tsukamoto was an incredibly helpful guide. I thought this book really highlighted the importance of creating your own unique creatures, pushing yourself to get out of your comfort zone, and exploring your imagination.
I loved the diversity of the artists using the technique, with how theauthor and artists really collaborated on showing there was no wrong way to draw something using the matrix. I also really loved the different genres or themes that some artists portrayed (like the mecha or demons sections) but I was almost disappointed by some of the art styles. I think that with the diversity of the book, some lesser-qualified artists made their way into the book. Although they are easily overlooked and over shadowed, they still mar some of the pages.
The book is a highly fascinating how-to guide for creating your own monsters, worlds, and characters. They include humanoids, animal hybrids, robots and cyborgs, to pure monsters. The brilliance and detail put forth to make this collaboration is phenomenal, with all of the artists cited in the index. There are many examples ranging from very traditional manga characters and faces to highly stylized beasts.
I know the sequel will be awesome. I think any aspiring artist, artists with writers block, or ones who feel the need to really branch out with their style will find that this book does all of that. It is a must buy for manga artists at any level. Being able to create and love what you create is all apart of the Manga Matrix journey.
There's no excuse for an art block when you have this book. It gives all sorts of fun, scarey, and crazy ideas. If nothing else, it'll get your creative juices flowing to come up with your own idea. ^^
This book is truly amazing. It helps me with my everyday drawings and the drawings that I really focus on. It puts things in perspective, of how to create characters and that is wonderful.
