This was such an important read for me. A fellow special needs dad gave me this book at a time when I wasn't ready to read it. When I finally got up the courage too it helped me a lot. The book encourages and challenges you at the same time. I could tell the authors had gone through similar experiences as I have and had many of the same struggles and questions.
I wish I had read this book 16 years ago. I would have been a better husband and a better father. There is so much that I did wrong, most of it related to selfishness.
As a woman, this was hard for me to relate to in many ways. How a mother relates to a child and the father relates is entirely different. We have a son who is grown now who was in special from fourth grade through high school. How we helped our son was different. The one common denominator was we both loved our son. We wanted what was best for him.
Steve Bundy and Doug Mazza, both leaders at Joni and Friends International, and both parents of special needs boys. Their book is filled with examples and stories of them learning how to love, accept and embrace their family situation. The book is filled with Biblical insights and personal stories... which is a help to others who have faced similar situations... this book offers encouragement, strength and hope to help men stand strong for their families.
Wonderful book. Heartwarming as well as convicting and encouraging.
Well worth it if you have disability in your family, to if you want to better understand/support families that do, or even just if you want to be uplifted in the beauty from the variety in this world God has created.
