Rowan Redfield is a queer and nonbinary author of twisted fantasy and epic science fiction. Based in Montana, she shares her life with two dogs, one cat, and her family.
I highly recommend this anthology to anyone feeling frustration, rage, and more in this current world. I’ll leave you with a few excerpts:
“real girlhood begins when rage does.” -Valeria Eden
“So every little girl grows sharp fangs To gnaw her way through the bars Of their gilded cage of purity.” -Danielle Salerno
“This wasn’t her fault. She was not to blame for wanting to exist.” -H.T. Doig
“Our collective rage is infinite and ethereal…and now it’s free.” -Sunny J Rowley
“Infinite ethereal rage is nothing compared to the power of infinite ethereal hope.” -Sunny J Rowley
“For the one who finds this, heed our warning; he will grow tired of your parts. For they are made of the women who could never love him.” -Sabrina Voerman
“Sometimes, the cavalry does not come for maidens in towers. But, perhaps, the maiden is glad of it because she has found a different kind of invulnerability.” -Julia Greenshaw
The poetry at the start was hit or miss for me, but that has more to do with my personal tastes (I don't love poetry, it's too abstract for me sometimes), than anything inherently "wrong" with the works themselves.
The short-story section was my jam. It was honestly cathartic to see men (heinous or just casually misogynistic) "get their's". I also don't feel as crazy, seeing these women get so angry, so incredibly angry at the way they're treated, because there are and have been many times in life I've felt condescended to, manipulated, disregarded-- in the exact way these women are. But instead of brushing themselves off, or convincing themselves otherwise, they get angrier, and they hunt for justice. It makes me feel seen. And as someone with many men in my life, and had many close men in my life, it feels nice just to be validated.
There was a nice mix of fantasy, science fiction, and even paranormal stories in the bunch. The trigger warnings provided were thoughtful, because this is very graphic. Nothing I thought was ever used carelessly or too graphic for the means, but rather, were used to really express some of the terrible things women go through, for no other reason than being a woman, or being convenient (that comes from being a woman).
I like to tell my partner: "I think women should get angrier. It's cool when they're angry." Half of it is stated in humor, but it's also very serious, and this collection is the manifestation of exactly what I mean. It's very tiresome to see men constantly get away with the things that they do, simply because they are men.
If y'all are aware of what's happening in the dumpster fire of a country right now and you're *angry*, definitely pick this up.
Call me biased since I have a short story in this anthology, but everyone who contributed is so fricken' talented and amazing. By the time I finished reading the last story, I had experienced a tumultuous roller coaster of emotions that left me staring into space, wondering what to do with myself.
I'm so honored I get to be in an anthology with so many awesome authors.
