This is the third of James’s books I have read, having read the rest of the series. And I enjoyed it just as much as the others. This series is wonderfully written, historically authentic, and bursting with romance, adventure, and excitement.
The third in her series did not disappoint. James continues to weave her trademark thread of magic subtly throughout the story, using it to enhance the plot and relationship between Hugh and Astrid, rather than tipping the book into the fantasy genre. As a result, it remains true to its historic setting of Medieval France and is a wonderfully immersive snapshot into the medieval era and how its people lived through political alliances, class, and power.
The relationship between Hugh and Astrid simmers and explodes into a fast-paced, hot and heavy romance, whilst having a strong respect and friendship underneath. It is a believable and exciting journey that you end up rooting for.
I really enjoyed this as an escapist read that has a little bit of everything: romance, magic, and adventure within a medieval setting.
