Even though Caleb, Havoc, and Vortex have sworn to protect me, I still don't feel safe.
The three of them protect me from the shadows I see in every corner, but they can't protect me from the shadows inside my mind.
Nothing I do lets me forget exactly who I am or where I came from... and I can't ever forget that my family will stop at nothing to get me back.
Gambler's Fallacy is the second book in the Calamity City Mafia trilogy and should not be read as a standalone. Please visit the authors' websites or look inside for a list of content notes.
I write almost exclusive m/m, but I have a fondness for bisexual protagonists. I enjoy a lot of darker themes, so you'll see a lot of that around here.
When I’m not writing, I’m reading, painting, playing video games, and rescuing cats. I also enjoy learning about languages and other cultures.
If you're ever curious about the contents of my works, I put content notes on my website (http://adarawolf.com)
I wasn’t really planning on reading this but I had KU for a few more months and this came out so here I am. I actually enjoyed this more than the first book. I think now that we’ve got everyone’s intros out of the way, it’s nice to just let the story move along.
This book isn’t as dark as the authors’ New Bristol books on the relationship front because all the guys are just…nice to Seven? But everyone’s got their own problems that they’re dealing with so this does get super dark at one point that took me by surprise. Definitely mind all the content warnings the authors include at the beginning of this book, especially the one about suicidal ideation.
This is a MMM/m romance and it mostly stays that way even though I keep rooting for Havoc and Vortex to kiss. We have very domineering personalities in Caleb, Vortex, and Havoc but they love taking care of Seven. Look. Seven is a LOT. He’s a handful. This is maybe the first ménage type romance where I’m fully believing that a character really does need 3 guys to take care of the one other MC because one guy wouldn’t be enough to take care of Seven. There are a lot of sex scenes but there’s also a lot of story and plot that move the book along so I wouldn’t say this book was all sex, all the time.
For a book that involves very shady business dealings in and around Calamity City, there is actually a weird lack of killing and death. There’s some fighting and violence that way, but murder isn’t that high on the list which surprised me. I was waiting for some annoying characters (annoying in that they’re giving the MMCs a hard time and I wanted them GONE) to be murdered and at least one person gets taken care of. The other? Hopefully, the next book takes care of that character.
Caleb has a new general manager in his brother-in-law, Trent. I don’t know what to make of him. He keeps wanting to go against Caleb’s orders but then there’s a moment where he really comes through for Seven so now I’m CONFLICTED. Caleb’s grandfather doesn’t have as much screen time here thank goodness. He really just needed to let the business go and retire and golf in peace. Then there’s Caleb’s uncle Earl. A menace to the family name and lurks around providing little to no value. The only surprising thing is that Caleb’s father just lets Caleb do his own thing and has mostly just not been a problem. That’s not usually how these books go so that’s been refreshing at least.
Vortex is dealing with his younger sister Connie and her need to be involved in MLMs. I didn’t like their scenes together because all I got was dread reading them. I hate MLMs and I just wish Vortex would hurry up and cut her off. She keeps asking Vortex to fund each new scam venture and he keeps handing over thousands upon thousands of dollars and I hate seeing it happen. I don’t know what to make of Connie but the last we saw of her I liked her a little bit more than I did before. So that’s something.
Havoc’s story is sad. He wants to save his mother and whisk her away from her abusive husband (he’s Havoc’s stepfather) and she’s still sticking by him no matter what he does to her. And I just want her to leave him and be happy with Havoc. Him hiding her green card and passport made ME want to jumping into the text and wring his neck myself. Hmm. Maybe he’ll die in the next book too. Here’s to hoping.
Seven is struggling with what and WHO he ran from in New Bristol and there is a cliffhanger here in this book in that the New Bristol problem has not been dealt with yet. I do feel like reading from his POV can feel like a bit much because there’s just not much growth between book 1 and most of this book. He has a gambling addiction Caleb is trying to ween him off of and he’s scared and self destructive all the time. But I think the ending of this book was a real turning point and I look forward to seeing if he becomes more confident in himself in the next book.
Caleb with his glasses on is HOT. Is there something there between him and Vortex because there’s a few moments that have me thinking they need to cuddle at least. Havoc and Vortex have sexual tension written all over them and I want SOMETHING to give. They’ve kind of made up but they’re not besties yet. Of course they’ve all got chemistry with Seven and I like that they care for him.
The cats, Nacho and Miss K, are still as cute as ever. And like the authors included in their note, nothing bad happens to them. They’re just living their best life with their four humans.
One thing I’ll also mention is that this book does attempt to add in women into the story (could be better but it’s not like the male characters are all that likable either outside of our four MCs) and quite a few of them are Black characters but it was weird to see the word with a lowercase b written out like “black” rather than, I believe, uppercase B like “Black”, which would be proper. Thought I’d point that out at least.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I like the characters and their dynamic together. It was a quick read and I’m looking forward to reading the next one!
Seven ❤️ is sweet and scared and incredibly strong. He has been sheltered and has so much to learn. Caleb is just what he needs - firm, bossy, capable - and it’s been cool to watch him melt a bit, change his life for Seven. Havoc is more fun than the others even though he’s got that anger issue. I’m enjoying watching him learn to control it a bit and be emotional in other ways now and then. And Vortex. He’s gentle, loving, kind but passive and he’s learning to be stronger and not just give people in his life he cares about what they ask for that he thinks they need regardless of how it makes him feel. He wants to please. With Seven he’s learning that’s not working and he’s becoming more genuine in that way. And I’ve loved watching him slowly begin to accept his “Daddy” role in Seven’s life. I love that all of them just accept that Seven needs them all and in different ways. I’ve always loved stories with multiple partners…so much love and care given and taken. But this one is different. They are each individually in a relationship with Seven - but not each other - and they’re all fine with that, supportive even. I love it! I’ve never read anything like this and if I’d realized that’s what it was, I may not have given it a chance. These 4 are good for each other and I’m looking forward to reading more. I have to wait until June 24th though 😩

I was waiting for the second book in this series and it did not disappoint! This is not a standalone, you have to have read book 1 and know about Seven, Caleb, Vortex & Havoc. Book 2 carries straight on and delves deeper into Seven's background and his current insecurities. It also gives us more on Caleb, Vortex & Havoc and further develops their relationship with Seven. You can see the bond grow between these 4 men and the character development in this book is amazing! Seven is a complex character but it is developed really well through the storyline. Theres some twists and turns- of course there are! It wouldn't be Calamity City otherwise, but it's so good! Now I have to be a good girl and wait patiently for Gambler's Ruin!!
Quick note: To understand the story of this book, it's necessary to read book one of this series, The Gambler's Conceit. We return to Seven, Caleb, Vortex and Havoc in this story, since the first book ended before the story was remotely finished. The way I could not wait to read this book is not even funny.
I devoured the first book and immediately fell in love with Seven, well and the other guys as well and needed to know how their story turned out. This was an amazing read and the spice was spicing 🥵
nothing special happened here. I expected more of the past to be revealed. I really want the tops to have a better relationship with each other. especially the tension that is between Havoc and Vortex. I mean just fuck already 🙄
This was a nice sequel! I was glad to be able to be back in this world because I missed Seven and his three men. This book goes deeper into the background stories of each one and I was satisfied with the result, for reasons I'll explain later. Overall, many elements worked for me and others didn't, but it was still a really good follow up.
The story for book 2 picks up after the events in the first one, Seven is shaken up and needs reassurance. Things get more complicated because his past keeps looming over him and it won't be long since it catches up to him. Caleb, Vortex and Havoc must leave their differences aside in order to help Seven and keep him out of danger, while addressing his past and its effects on his current behaviour.
So, I'm going to be real honest here, this book didn't keep me as invested as book 1, which I gave 5 stars vs giving this one 4 stars. This one felt like it had a faster pace at times, and slower at others. I think what I would've wanted is for the sex scenes to be reduced (speaking as someone who loves smut and erotica) in favor of the plot. I thought some events repeated themselves with Seven crashing down and always seeking the others and trying to make them believe he always wants sex, when the reality is much harder to swallow.
Now that I have gotten that out of my chest, as I mentioned - I was actually satisfied with how far this book came regarding the characters. I liked that it called out each MC's flaw and there were discussions around them, for the better of everyone. The most difficult one to tackle in my eyes was Seven's past and his self-destructive behaviour. I had been waiting since book 1 for it to be spoken about, and here the topic is raised. Same with Havoc's mother, Vortex's sister and Caleb's family.
This book did great in developing the dynamic and each main character and advancing the plot. I thought at first it was too focused on the dynamics, but later the plot got picked up, which was nice. About the plot, it didn't go towards the direction I'd thought as typical mafia books do (which is nothing wrong, I love cliches if well done), but this one surprised me.
I'm excited to see the conclusion to this story and how Seven's going to finally be free. I look forward to more action and plot from book 3, because I think the dynamics are well established and I believe this time the focus should rely on the story. I'm going to miss these four until next time.

🔥🥀Gambler’s Fallacy , Calamity City Part 2 by Adara Wolf & R. Phoenix🥀🔥
Goodness! Seven is back to break my heart! Adara Wolf, and R Phoenix have succeeded in writing the neediest little broken boy. But! In Gambler’s Fallacy book 2 of the Calamity City series he is beginning to find his purpose and his strength! I love how his men- Caleb, Havoc, and Vortex navigate their own issues to try to be the best support and place of healing for him, even when that looks a little rough at times *wink* lol! The suspense and action in this book and book one are so fun and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! Highly highly recommend this series and cannot wait to see where they take the story next!

Official Description: Book overview Even though Caleb, Havoc, and Vortex have sworn to protect me, I still don't feel safe.
"Gambler's Fallacy" is the second book in the series and it can't be read as a standalone. I'm not going to spoil anything in this review. I loved the second book as much as the first. It was intense and emotional and there was great character growth for all four main characters. I really liked Caleb in this book, I think we got to know him better and he felt more relatable. The storyline with Havoc's mother broke my heart and I thought that it was very important for the story and it helped Havoc understand Seven better. I hope we'll get a resolution in the next book. I also really liked learning more about Vortex's past and his relationship with his sister and I hope we get to see his sister grow. Seven was my favorite. Sometimes it was really hard to be in his point of view, it hurt and I actually had to stop reading for a while during one scene because it was too painful. His situation feels so desperate but we are slowly seeing him getting better. The action scene towards the end of the book was very well written and had me worried for the characters and bitting my fingernails. There was also an amazing twist that I didn't see coming. This is a really great series and the second book was absolutely fantastic. I can't wait for book three, I need to find out what will happen next.
In this book, we find out even more about Seven's past. We don't have all the details but it's enough to paint a horrifying picture.
He'd always been self-destructive, but I think the authors did a good show portraying how deeply he was conditioned as a child. Through abuse and assault, they trained him, so he had no other choice than to do what they wanted. We see how afraid he is of going back, just how worthless he feels. It was difficult to read his POV sometimes.
“I wonder if I could drown myself while no one’s paying attention.”
Havoc, Caleb, and Vortex are far from being perfect, but they're always trying to understand Seven and find ways to help him. They make mistakes, but they're getting better at it. Although it happens slowly, there's still some improvement. It evolved a lot in the last part of the book.
“I should be self-conscious about my body — about the marks on it — but for once, I feel blissfully unbothered by it all. He’s safe. I'm safe.”
By the end, it's easy to tell that Seven truly started to trust them and feel safe. He doesn't want to be scared all the time, he wants to fight, and it's honestly the best thing that could happen.
4.5 stars. Lies, lies, lies. It’s too confusing and painful to be really honest.
We get snippets of what Seven is been through, it’s deeply disturbing, and he’s traumatized. He doesn’t trust anyone, even his three protectors.
Lies, lies, lies.
Seven is mostly oblivious to people’s intentions, he’s cautious and expects the worst. In his opinion, he’s the one who does wrong and should be punished. He’s always trying to find out what the three guys expect from him, what to answer and afraid to disappoint He feels he always disappoints, deserves punishment, and uses rough s€x for it.
Lies, lies, lies.
Caleb, Havoc, and Vortex are here to protect him at all costs. They also try for Seven to open up about his history and feel safe. (Oh boy would that ever happen?) It’s chaos, they hurt each other, and thereby Seven the most, even though they don’t want to. They are failing at times.
The threats are outside, lurking for Seven.
The story is not only about Seven and his men, we also get a look at Havoc, Caleb, and Vortex’s private lives, full of sh!t and struggles. Another great read, super entertaining and hot. Can’t wait for the continuation!
Uuuugh I can’t believe I have to wait almost 2 months for the final book in this trilogy - to say I am devastated would be an understatement.
I wasn’t sure where this book would go, especially with it being a trilogy but we got such a deep dive into Seven’s trauma as a result of his past. Every single one of his behaviors and thoughts were due to years of being conditioned by traffickers. It’s definitely emotional and heartbreaking. But to see Caleb, Havoc, and Vortex consistently stand by him despite anything and everything that happens, was healing. They always gave him what he needed even if it meant upsetting him but having his best interest in him. They used words and actions to show Seven that they would stand by him no matter what. And in the end we got to see some healing from Seven and a new found strength.
Caleb’s character definitely grew on me a ton! My perceptive changed on him almost entirely. This book is just so beautifully made up of complex characters and emotions.
There were also some shocking twists and turns to this story that had me on the edge of my seat. I’m definitely looking forward to the Lockwood’s being eliminated and dealt with.
Seven’s story continues! I enjoyed the second installment of the Calamity City series. Seven is still under fierce protection by his triad after the near miss in book 1. He gets a little bit of cabin fever which is understandable. We see more results of his sheltered upbringing and his past struggles that are haunting his present. Caleb, Havoc and Vortex continue to stand strong by Seven, giving him want he needs even when he has no idea. Seven finally opens up a bit and begins to fully trust these relationships and his men’s devotion to him. We get a great suspenseful chase and showdown and by the end we also see Seven more confident in himself and what he wants and deserves. We also get a huge wow moment that I did not see coming! Loved it. Looking forward to the next book!
More adventures with Seven and his men in book two of Calamity City Mafia by R. Phoenix and Adara Wolf. And spectacular adventures they are as these two authors ramp up the tension between the guys and their enemies and between the guys themselves. Even though he is so damaged Seven tries so hard, and he makes a great linchpin to keep the respective relationships going. The outside world invades again and it’s great how the authors bring in so many characters and storylines that the book ends up being very multidimensional. I really like how much emotion is involved and not just between the men, but also in the other relationships with their families etc. The whole book is terrific. Can’t wait for book three.
This is easily a new favorite series of mine. I loved the first book, and I’m glad to see consistency with the writing in this one. It’s just as intense, angsty, mysterious and high-stakes, and I can’t wait for the next book. I’m just glad it’s coming out in June and we don’t have to wait a long time. The characters- I sympathized with Seven so much, and his struggle made me ache. Vortex is probably my favorite love interest. His dilemma with Connie is familiar to me, and I really felt for him. I loved seeing more of Havoc’s personal life in this one, and I got a better understanding and appreciation of Caleb. The story was a good length, and I hope the next one is also 300+ pages because I think anything less won’t be satisfying enough for me.
4⭐️ This series is really addictive! In this book, we get a lot of the same as we did in book 1, with encounters between Seven, Vortex, Havoc and Caleb. We get to learn more about Seven’s backstory, and deal with some shady characters. More development is made with the individual stories of the MCs as well.
I will say, I really wish we got more development between the MMM part of the MMM/m relationship dynamic. Though the 3 guys are definitely there for Seven, the moments of camaraderie between them are also really fun.
This book deals with really heavy material. And though Seven is deeeeepppllly unwell after what he’s been through, you can see that he starts to trust Caleb, Havoc and Vortex a lot more in this story.
Really liked the whole parallel of Seven's former situation and relationship with his family with Havoc's mum and conjugal violence. The point of view of someone not understanding why the victim stays with their abuser, a former victim talking about what he felt and feels and a victim currently in an abusive relationship. Even if those two situations are not the exact same in terms of the relationships and dynamics between the characters, the authors manage to find the similarities and write really well about abusive dynamics.
Like the previous book, would have benefitted from a last editing round —but nothing too bad.
LOVED THIS BOOK! Please note that this is the 2nd book in a series so make sure you read book 1 first or it will be hard if not impossible to follow
I fell in love with Seven at first read and I love seeing more of his back story and that of the other guys as well. We get to see how his 3 men all have something to offer him. He is starting to open up a bit more and trust a bit more though I don't think that will ever be a thing that is easy for him as he has been through so much.
I don't like to give spoilers so I will stop there other than to say I HIGHLY recommend this book!
I enjoyed it! I did prefer the first one, but this had a lot of backstory that was very satisfying. Really looking forward to the conclusion especially given the events near the end of the book!
I was getting kind of annoyed with Seven in this one. Like I know he's traumatized etc etc but it was a lot of him whining about stuff and then taking everyone for granted. It got old real fast and kind of irked me after a while. Also Vortex's sister? Oh my god like the worst person ever, I love to hate her. I feel like she's going to get a redemption arc but I kind of want her to die??
I like the previous book, but this one was even better. It had some strong emotions that made it hard to read at times, but beautiful at the same time. It had me laughing, it made me mad, it frustrated me, it made me love all the characters. I love what every one has to give to the story, but I felt Seven and Caleb were special. I loved this two the most. The plot was nice and it gave me some nice and some not so nice surprises. Overall I find it hard to put down, I loved it.
Seven is a complex person and the development throughout is AMAZING! He’s gone through a lot and was running from whatever he’s gone through.
Getting to read more about the in depths of the relationships is amazing. Super duper well written, this is certainly a MMM book.
Be mindful of the content as it is important. it’s not clean but definitely worth the read.
There’s several characters, Seven, Vortex, Caleb, Havoc, Cortexs sister Connie (who’s honestly simply ehh) not a fave character of mine but I see why she’s here.
I don't write many reviews but felt I HAD to here. The character development in this second book was amazing. I felt Seven's torment. I felt each character's struggles and frustration. But I LOVED how each person grew and communicated. Seven started finding his fire and I cannot wait for book 3 for true vindication on his behalf.
I love Seven. This man has his men wrapped around his finger. This story isn’t a a stand alone. This is a book 2 and it handles the navigate of their own issues to try to be the best support and place of healing for him. This is a beautiful written and tells the story so we can get all the answers we are questioning. I can’t wait for next book.
I really just want Seven and his men to rule the city. Seven's family can kick rocks because his new family is better. It was stressful with how close he was to danger the whole time, but at least we know that Havoc, Vortex, and Caleb will never let anything happen to Seven, including himself. I'm super anxious for the next book to find out what happens.
I raced through this in two sittings. It was so good! I was hoping for even more of sevens life before calamity but we did learn a lot. I love all these characters and can’t wait for the next book
It's definitely worth the wait, however now there's going to be a wait for book 3 ... I dont know what I'm going to do now until gamblers ruin comes out. This is spicy but with a good story too !!!
Part two of the hot and dark series from the authors with Seven, Caleb, Vortex and Havoc. Sevens family is still trying to get him, happy for now. Can’t wait for the next. Highly recommended
This story is an emotional roller-coaster ride. It's so spicy, but the spice fits perfectly with the story. I love how much they've all grown together and how much stronger Seven has gotten.
