Aptly titled as the majority of these vegetable-based recipes are very familiar and basic. What was interesting about this book is the instructions include step-by-step artfully staged colour photos of the steps. You may be thinking huh?

To help you visualise, think about how the instructions "Peel and finely dice the carrots. Peel the sweet potato and cut it into large pieces. Peel and finely chop the shallots and garlic. Chop the parsley." might be represented as a picture. What you will find beneath these instructions is a lovely photo of a cutting board showing the uncut vegetables above it and the vegetables prepared as instructed neatly lined up in 5 vertical rows on the cutting board.

The next step tells you "In a dutch oven over medium heat, heat the oil and sauté the shallots, garlic, and carrots with a pinch of salt and pepper for about 3 minutes." The accompanying photo shows a pot with these ingredients creatively hovering over it. Each cooking picture also includes the cooking time and temperature for the step it represents.

This format continues for each step for all of these well-written recipes and if you are wondering if the finished dish is pictured, it is but next to the ingredient list before the instructions. The inclusion of the photos makes this a great option for fledgling cooks seeking vegetarian dishes. It will also appeal to anyone who enjoys good food art.

This is more a vegetarian (not vegan) cookbook than a vegetable cookbook. Most of the recipes have minimal ingredients and easy instructions. There are photos of the recipes. Some recipes look more appetizing than others. There are recipes for breakfast, eggs, dips, salad, casseroles, sides, soups, sandwiches, entrees and desserts. If you are a beginner vegetarian, this book might be for you.
