Starting 2026 with a book that feels like a purr against the ankle. Jeff Bogle’s Street Cats and Where to Find Them is tender, curious, and quietly enchanting—a wander through alleyways and soft-hearted stories that linger long after the last page. Five stars for whiskered wonder.
STREET CATS & WHERE TO FIND THEM by Jeff Bogle. This is an unusual guidebook by a cat-loving author. He did not grow up with cats, and when his girlfriend took in her aunt’s kitties, Bogle was forced to deal with the furry felines. Four hours later, one was on his lap – and the rest is history as they say. As a writer, the author traveled frequently, and always found street cats during his journeys. Some were friendly, some wanted to be left alone, and some needed food and medical care. Bogle and his camera captured the cats in cities around the world and he gives “cat cuddle” ratings to each place. For example, Lima, Peru (5 cuddles – the highest rating), Matera, Italy (1 cuddle aka “leave us alone”), Dubrovnik (4 cuddles which I can attest to since I’ve been there and cuddled with a few myself), and even Tangier Island, Virginia (4 cuddles from cats that outnumber island residents).
The photography is excellent, and the writing is witty and full of information – even which airports will bring you closest to the cats in each city. The guidebook also suggests places to stay and eat, and most important – charities in each city that help to care for the felines. The book ends with information on locations of cat museums, festivals and oddities.
This is a purrfect (sorry, I could not resist) gift for the cat lover in your family.
I saw the title of this book, and was immediately intrigued. As a frequent traveler who also loves cats, I bought the book for the lovely photos, taken by the author on his travels.
I was pleasantly surprised that the book is so much more than gorgeous photos. It's a travel guide with interesting stories of many locations where I have also traveled and enjoyed the street cats. However, I was overjoyed to learn so much from this author about many places I have never even dreamed of going, and the details about the street cats added a whole new level of intrigue for me. Bogle offers suggestions about where to stay, where to eat, how to best enjoy the street cats, and how to support the work of organizations that feed and care for the cats.
I highly recommend this book, not only as a resource for your own travels to street-cat-friendly locations, but as a lovely gift for a friend or family member who shares the author's passion for adventure and kitties. This one will stay on my coffee table, where I can browse the gorgeous pages often.
It was such a pleasure to read about all the different places in the world that you can see cats. I loved the photos included and it was full of funny and adorable moments! As someone obsessed with cats I couldn’t help but smile through the whole thing. You can tell how much the author and his family love cats, and it’s so heartwarming. It also includes amazing stories about the different groups around the world that love and care for these sweet animals. Most importantly included is how to help cats around the world and where to donate! This book definitely gave me some ideas on where to hopefully travel to in the future 🩷 A must read for cat lovers!
The text in this book was a 2-star read, for me. Added a star for the amazing photos of cats.
I do hope the author's wife is OK. Because he mentions FIVE TIMES in this book that she was unable to climb a steep street or path, later mentioning that her health condition prohibits her from climbing a lot of steps. If I were her, I'd be pissed off at Jeff for mentioning that bit of irrelevance in his book.
I can't see anybody using this book as an actual travel guide, to be honest. My suggestion is to just look at and enjoy the photos of cats and return it to the library, like I did.
A book of travel destinations for cat lovers, full of photos of adorable cats. The author kept it real by sharing the hardships many street cats face and how to help. Two sections at the end about cat cafes and miscellaneous cat locations.
Informative. Mix of travel book (plenty of exotic cat friendly locations) and cat book. Lovely pictures of cats. Also included information about how to support rescues and other places that help cats in the locations included in the book.
