My Best Friend's Earl

Rate this book
A bold bookseller tries to matchbreak her friend’s engagement to an earl . . . until she finds herself falling for him instead.

The one thing Constance Martin wants most to avoid is a boring life. She walks her cat with a leash in Hyde Park and even called off her wedding at the altar to stop what would have been a monotonous marriage. So when an aristocratic friend comes into the store asking for help throwing over her fiancé, Constance is both sympathetic and eager for the excitement to come. What could be more fun than plotting ways to get a stuffy—but very handsome—earl to break an engagement?

Oliver Vincent, Earl of Southwyn, likes his orderly life of duty and logic. Everything’s falling into place; all that’s left is marrying the girl next door. Except the girl next door is increasingly reluctant. But marriage is a business deal, after all, and Oliver is determined to keep moving forward with the plan. If only he wasn’t so distracted by her friend—a stunning woman best described as chaos incarnate. She thinks marriage should be an adventure, and he views it as a transaction. But Oliver can’t seem to remember the downsides of falling when Constance is near. . .

Bethany grew up in a small fishing village in Alaska where required learning included life-skills like cold-water survival, and several other things that are utterly useless as a romance writer. Eventually settling in the Northwest with her real-life hero and two children, she enjoys mountain views from the comfort of her sofa, wearing a tremendous amount of flannel, and drinking more coffee than her doctor deems wise.

One Liner: Nice, but missing the spark

Constance Martin doesn’t want a boring life. She even called off her wedding to avoid the monotony of marriage. So, when a friend, a woman with a title, asks for help to break off her engagement, Constance is more than happy to help.

Oliver Vincent, Earl of Southwyn, wants his life to be orderly and structured. He has it all planned, down to marrying the girl next door, who is very reluctant to say yes. His life would be easy if her friend weren’t such a distraction. With them being poles apart, nothing good would come out of it, right?

The story comes in Constance and Oliver’s third-person POVs.

My Thoughts:

I quite enjoyed the first book in the series and was happy to grab this one. We meet both main leads in that book, so I knew their story would be entertaining, thanks to their contrasting personalities.

The ADHD rep is very well done, which is not surprising since the author has it (don’t skip her note at the end). Connie or Constance is chaotic, forgetful, and may appear flighty, but has a kind heart and yearns to be loved for who she is (her family accepts her ways, but she suffers from bouts of confidence issues).

The MMC’s father was the kind you’d want to avoid at any cost, so he does his best to be the opposite of him. That means he inevitably becomes an idiot in other aspects. While I could see his reasoning, the way he refused to even consider what his fiancée wanted and acted like he knew what was best for her annoyed me. In short, dude wants to be an earl in shining armor even if the damsel doesn’t want it.

The banter and the antics were fun. The scenes with the cat and kitten (yeah, we have both) can bring a chuckle or two. Even the conversations are well-written.

That said, I didn’t feel the spark I felt in the previous book. Somehow, their relationship fell flat, despite having all the drama and angst it should have. The spicy scenes didn’t help either, though it’s novel to have a role reversal with a virgin hero.

Moreover, the pacing is uneven. I feel the setup and drama are dragged a bit too long. The story would have been tighter if it had taken out a couple of chapters.

I like the side characters, Althea and the other guy, as well as Hattie, the cousin, and Caro and Dorian (from book one). They play fairly moderate roles, so it will help you read book #1 at some point. The next one should be Hattie’s (I think I know who the hero will be. We’ll wait and see if I’m right).

To summarize, My Best Friend's Earl is an entertaining read for the most part, but it didn’t give me the same feels as the previous book. Still, I’m excited for the next in the series.

Thank you, NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing), for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

The latest from historical romance talent Bethany Bennett sees a spirited bookseller attempt anything to get a close friend's fiance to call off their wedding—even forcing him to care for a feral cat, ruining his particular fashions, and unexpectedly having him fall for her instead. Unconventional pairings are the real treat in Bennett’s Bluestocking Booksellers series. Constrained by his duty and his commitment to so called logic, Oliver, the Earl of Southwyn meets his match in Constance Martin, bookish, untitled, and caring not a whit for the rules that have governed his life and most of polite society. These competing personalities are more compatible than these two ever thought, and seeing these two fight feelings with mild degrees of success is half the fun with this one. Reading Constance’s matchbreaking plan in action was an entertaining beginning to this story as it quickly spirals out of control and Bennett builds to their romance. Bennett has a handle on her setups and My Best Friends Earl is the funniest one to date. Wickedly sexy and delightfully entertaining, My Best Friends Earl is the historical romance for every book lover out there and anyone who has ever felt like too much.

My Best Friend’s Earl by Bethany Bennett
Bluestocking Booksellers series #2. Historical regency romance. Disability. Can be read as a stand-alone but better in series order. The couple from the prior book are secondary characters here.
Constance Martin is a bookseller working in her parent’s store. She loves creating displays and helping customers but can’t keep her mind on the necessary paperwork behind the scenes. When one of her aristocratic friends comes to Connie for help in getting her fiance to beg off from the marriage contract, Connie has several ideas that can help.
Oliver Vincent, the Earl of Southwyn was contracted by his father, to marry the neighbor’s daughter when he was just a child himself. His very land depends on the marriage though his fiance doesn’t know all the details. When his fiance gifts him a feral kitten and starts replacing his waistcoats with appalling fabric patterns, he’s a bit confused but still determined to go through with the marriage. A visit from the beautiful Miss Martin has him more confused than ever. He finds himself falling for the bookseller, even knowing he has no choices in his future. Does he?

An amusing romp of ineffective trickery like moving objects, a kitten that’s been abandoned and falling for the wrong person. Connie has what today would be diagnosed as ADHD and there is part of the storyline that includes her issues and how she and her family works around them. She falls for the handsome Earl but she’s just a bookseller and knows she can’t have a future with him.
I loved Oliver and his goodness and earnestness. This is a man that definitely sees beyond himself and wants to help. Even when it costs him money. He is innocent in many ways and that just makes him sexier.

Entertaining, a bit steamy, and totally delightful.

Constance Martin is chaos incarnate, which makes her *the perfect* person to run breakup interference for her friend Althea, who is engaged to Oliver Vincent, Earl of Southwyn. For three years Althea has been pushing off matrimony, not because she dislikes Southwyn, but because he was engaged to her older sister first, and she can't marry someone she's viewed as a brother her whole life. Enter Constance, who in the process of trying to mastermind a breakup, can't help but see how handsome the extremely proper and starchy Southwyn is. The moment Constance catches him cursing - but also determined to love - the feral cat Althea forces him to adopt is the moment she knows she's in trouble herself.

Constance has ADHD, and this is one of the first historical romance books I've read where the heroine isn't just "quirky," but very clearly has ADHD and is written by a writer with ADHD. She's described as chaotic (recognizable), but I was drawn more to her emotional responses to situations, particularly ones in which she is challenged. She's quick to give her whole heart and whole level of investment into something, until something else requires it, and Bethany Bennett shows this innate and joyous rather than flighty. (I appreciated the honest support from her parents about how she isn't equipped to run a bookstore by herself.) She's also quick to feel deeply wounded, even when logic dictates she shouldn't be. So much of Constance's character feels similar to how I imagine I would have functioned in the early 19th century.

The complicated setup of the plot (did I mention the writer has ADHD, because I feel seen here too!), makes the pacing of this book a little uneven. It works, and I understand why Bennett does this, but it may make a rough start for some readers. I didn't read the first book of the series, so while I was thrown into the middle of friendships that I felt I could sort out well, it took until 20% of the book to really get a handle on everyone and why they were important. (But we got there!) The other pacing note, is that because Southwyn is engaged to Althea for most of the book, and he is as starchy as they come, it takes a long time for the full chemistry between Constance and Southwyn to blossom.

For those willing to brave the chaos, you'll be rewarded with a virgin hero who is incredibly protective of the heroine's personality, a semi-feral cat, and a solid solution to the overall story conflict. Where the book leans on the bonkers-energy side, it excels with bright characters and fun, and once Constance and Southwyn figure out what they can do with their attraction, it's worth it.

Thank you to Forever for an eARC. My Best Friend's Earl is out 8/12/25.

Connie Martin can't say no when her newest aristocrat friend, Althea, asks for help. Be her matchbreaker. Connie is the youngest daughter of a bookshop owner and is "chaos incarnate." Oliver Vincent, the Earl of Southwyn, has everything planned out for each day. No earl could be more methodical, until the influence of Miss Martin enters his life. A feral kitten, waistcoats that raise eyebrows and kisses that are hotter than an earl ever imagined. What a way to break a betrothal! Humor and very descriptive sex.

I really should have DNFed this when I considered it around the halfway point.

The end was an absolute nightmare of characters having separate, elaborate plans and purposefully not saying a word to the other; causing a mess of everyone frustrated, running around town and just missing each other.

The whole book is really a sequence of people (especially the hero) going “nah I don’t need to share this vital piece information”

Oliver’s clinging to duty got boring, and his whole virgin “I can only jack off on Tuesdays” schtick was off putting.

I didn’t buy that they were in love! The pivot around their declarations felt sudden and unearned. Their commitment to each other just didn’t feel legitimate.

Everybody’s heard of a matchmaker, but how about a match breaker? After shopgirl, Constance successfully, ends her own marriage in style, in order to find her own happiness, she is approached by her aristocratic friend, Althea to help her get out of her own engagement!

Althea has been engaged to the Earl of Southwyn since her elder sister broke off her engagement to him and elope with her now husband. Althea has never wanted this relationship and the Earl, Oliver has never put in the work to create anything more than the next-door neighbour/ sisterly friendship between them.

Never one to leave a friend in need, Connie jumps on board and starts scheming to convince the earl to break off the engagement… she doesn’t expect to end up spending so much time with him or to be so drawn to his interesting demeanour and handsome face!

But these two can only be ships passing in the night since Oliver isn’t willing to put aside his engagement, which means much more than just gaining a wife to him.

I absolutely loved both Connie and Oliver. They are both such unique Neurodiverse characters that complement each other so well. I love how author of Bethany Bennett brings in a little of herself and Connie who truly develops the personification of ADHD and females. Connie is used to being looked down on for her lack of concentration and focus on her tasks, but with Oliver, he sees the opposite of himself when he looks at her and finds her uniqueness and her creative approach fascinating!

I had so much fun with this book in these characters. I love seeing how they manage to break Althea and Oliver’s engagement in a way the benefits of all the parties involved! This is why I love reading romance and getting to my inevitable and well deserved HEA!!!

The second book in the series & what a fun, entertaining romance it was. I loved Constance & Oliver they are different but oh so loveable. Constance is asked to be a matchbreaker as Althea sees Oliver as a brother not a husband plus he was engaged to her sister so she’s not keen on a hand me down! There are quite a few twists before we finally have a HEA. A very well written romance, which made me smile & I found it hard to put down

TLDR: This book doesn’t seem to want to know what it wants to be for the first half, then it slams the Romance into high-gear, only to become a romp for the last 25% while feeling too modern and unserious the ENTIRE time. I never believed in the Romance, I never liked the hero, and the two stars are for Althea’s HEA and Prince the Cat only!!!

This gets ranty:The first half of My Best Friend’s Earl is a cute albeit drawn out time with Connie, our heroine, and Althea, her best friend, scheming and trying to end Althea’s betrothal to Oliver (the eventual hero). There are also many appearances by everyone’s family, the couple from the last book (Caro and Dorian I love you!), and very few instances where Connie and Oliver are 1) together or 2) alone together. Still, I could see the appeal and the attraction between these two, and it was a good start…Not enough to carry the story, which is what it is forced to do, but a good start.

I really did enjoy Connie as a Heroine (throughout the whole book) and I appreciated that Bennett gave her ADHD and the reader got to be in her head and see how she went about her day to day. But Oliver as a hero lacked any pizzazz to keep me interested - Ye of Following Rules and Honor got to be very boring (he really lost me when it was brought up he scheduled his masturbation and that inner monologue went on for a few pages…and then it happened again). I did enjoy him with the kitten (Prince! ), but he was a crap fiancé to Althea and seemed to only realize this when he realized he was attracted to her best friend and the plot couldn’t let their betrothal move ahead.

I cannot stress this enough - at the 51% mark (yes, I noted it), it seemed as if Bennett remembered she was writing a Romance because suddenly the budding attraction between the MCs was a full blown garden, complete with an unexpected and heated encounter in a storeroom that had me putting the book down and looking around wondering what I had missed (nothing!).

But now Oliver and Connie were madly in love and doomed to be apart. And I felt for them in my Romance Reader heart, but I had yet to recover from the about-face from the first half of the book and I never really bought into their romance because of that. That said, there was a sweet spot of 25% where I enjoyed Oliver and Connie and wished Connie the best (Oliver, I never liked you)…but that came to an end as well…

If I could explain everything I had to read in the last quarter of this book and not sound like I was throwing trope soup at the wall, I would. But for my sanity and what brevity I have left, I will say that the third-act climax is brought on by Oliver’s complete lack of communication, a plan only for Drama and Scandal’s sake, Connie and his cousins (one who is a Duchess!!!) storming into a house party, a local gossip being In The Know, and dramatic and loud declarations. Truthfully, I would have been shooting back whatever champagne was in my flute had I been at this house party because Good Lord, it was over the top.

I didn’t enjoy this book, and I should have left it on read (like Oliver did to Connie for THREE DAYS) at the 25% mark. But instead, I have to sit here and say that I LOVED ‘Good Duke Gone Wild’ and had high expectations here that maybe couldn’t be met. Or maybe, the book had too much going on outside of Oliver and Connie for their Romance to flourish.

P.S. - I’m very glad Althea got her HEA. And I’m happy Connie did as well. Oliver is lucky he makes Connie happy because if it was up to me, he would be out to pasture where he is so concerned about his canals being built.

Thank you to Forever and NetGalley for the Arc!

The whirlwind had a name—Constance Martin!

When Althea Thompson talks Constance Martin, a feisty bookseller, into becoming her ‘match breaker’, Althea’s fiancé, Oliver Vincent, the Earl of Southwyn little knew what he was in for!
Oliver and Althea’s sister Dorcas had been betrothed by their respective fathers since they were in their cradles. After Dorcas died, that honor moved down to sister number two, Althea!
Oliver’s not moving onto cancelling the engagement for several reasons. He has his eye on a piece of land that the river that runs through. Land his father had lost in a card game with Althea’s. Crops are failing all over England and Oliver is looking for another way to support his estate and his tenants. The land is part of Althea’s dowry. Besides Oliver has known Althea since childhood and doesn’t trust Althea’s father not to force Althea into a marriage with someone distasteful.
Now Oliver is a man of habit. Lord Stuffy Pants is Constance’s moniker for him. This is what Constance hones in on in her ‘match breaking’ ventures.
Constance is a bundle of energy, darting from one project to another and delights in shocking society.
Part 1 of the battle is to introduce chaos into Oliver’s life, and Constance does that in spades.
Disconcertingly, Constance is discovering how much she admires Oliver’s ability to cope.
Oliver finds himself constantly delighted by Constance’s ability to jump from one course of action to another, all the time chattering away at top speed. He’s delighted by the diversity of thought, the originality that Constance is.
Part 2 is a party where the guests misbehave.
The stage is set. The games afoot. Disconcertingly Constance finds Oliver rather less stuffy than she’d anticipated. And Oliver?
A rather jolly and witty romp that delighted me!

A Forever ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.

Thank you Forever for this absolute romp of a book! If you haven’t yet explored the historical romance genre, I’d recommend this one to fans of contemporary romcoms.

Constance hates boredom and monotony. So when a friend begs for her help as a “match breaker,” she’s thrilled to come up with a number of silly ways to make the stuffy Earl’s life difficult enough to break the engagement.

What I loved most about My Best Friend’s Earl was the FMC, Connie. She experiences ADHD very similarly to the ways I experience it. Author Bethany Bennett finds ways to show how frustrating the condition can be, that constant internal question of, “Why can’t I do the things other adults do so easily?” From paperwork to keeping a routine to filtering thoughts before you open your mouth, and wondering if your friends are all judging you for all of it, I felt so seen by this book.

I also loved how the romance played out. It had my perfect level of tension, where it felt like there were real barriers to their relationship. Their first kiss was 🔥🔥🔥!!

Something I absolutely adored about Oliver was that, since he had been betrothed since childhood, and since his intended was expected to come to their marriage without any physical intimacy experience, he would hold himself to that same expectation. Plus, since he knew who his wife would be, it felt like he’d be cheating on her. I thought that was just so sweet of him 🥹.

This is the second book in a series, but I haven’t read the first, and still really enjoyed it. I will definitely be reading more from this author!

I love this new girly pop book sellers series! It’s like a dream. I also love that we get more of the cousins because I loved them with my whole heart in the first book.

Connie is a runaway bride and rightfully so because her ex-fiancé so a nope. Now her friend Althea is asking for her help to get Oliver (her betrothed) to end their engagement. So Connie and Althea come up with a list of ways to irritate Oliver enough that he will let Althea go.

Oliver is very honorable and is only marrying Althea because his dad and her dad made a stupid agreement while drunk 🙄 but Oliver starts to realize that not only will Althea be miserable but so will he because he can’t stop thinking about Connie.

A chaotic bookseller who walks her cat on a leash around London and needs a task list to remind her to eat, versus an earl who has his waistcoats color-coded by day of the week and schedules his “self-love” time? Say less. Thanks to Forever and NetGalley for the complimentary ARC of My Best Friend’s Earl.

Constance Martin is no stranger to scandal. Several years before the start of this book she left her fiancé at the altar when she realized that marriage to him would be an intolerable string of monotonous days. Connie—who has always felt inferior to her conventionally perfect twin sister and more-organized cousins—helps run her family’s bookshop and wants to take over the business to preserve the only home she’s ever known, but she isn’t capable of handling the operational side of the company. She’s a brilliant bookseller who connects with customers and knows their stock inside and out; she just can’t focus long enough to do the accounting when there are a million other things she could be doing.

Oliver Vincent, Earl of Southwyn, would rather marry a woman he doesn’t love and spend eternity with a scheduled frig on Tuesday mornings than engage in scandalous behavior. His terrible father signed a betrothal agreement when Oliver was a child, binding him to the girl next door. When Oliver’s original fiancée eloped with the man she loved, he accepted her younger sister, Althea, in her place. Althea would rather be set on fire than marry Oliver, so she goes to the one person she knows who has jilted a man and lived to tell the tale: Constance. Althea begs Connie to be her “matchbreaker” and convince Oliver that she doesn’t want to marry him. But things are more complicated than Althea knows, and Oliver doesn’t want to leave her at her father’s mercy. To add even more mess to the situation, Oliver can’t stop thinking about his fiancée’s chaotic best friend—especially on Tuesday mornings.

Constance has ADHD. This is not me diagnosing the character—the author states in her note that she has ADHD and struggles with the way her brain works in a world that doesn’t yet have language to describe it. Connie constantly jumps from one activity to another, one interest to another, in pursuit of something that will engage her long enough to calm her brain. I actually struggled with the beginning of this book because my brain works the opposite way Connie’s does, and I had a hard time with her inattention. Once I settled into the story, I found the structure of the book interesting and was able to ride along with Connie, despite the fact that my obsessive tendencies were screaming for her to finish a task before moving on.

The structure of My Best Friend’s Earl reminded me a lot of Then Came You by Lisa Kleypas (1992). In both books, the hero is engaged to someone else at the start of the story, and for the first half the main characters are antagonists. It’s unusual to see a modern historical romance where the characters aren’t involved in any real romance—or even acknowledged yearning—until about halfway through. But once we locked into the romance, it was very well done. I really wasn’t sure how Bethany Bennett was going to get us to the HEA, but I trusted the process and was rewarded.

My only complaint is that the hero is much too soft for my taste until the final 10 % of the book. He spends so much time worried about becoming his father that he forgets to become himself until it’s almost too late. My preference for historical-romance heroes trends toward the alpha, and while I know that’s not popular today, it’s my preference and I wish we saw it more.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one and would recommend it to historical romance fans. 4 stars.

💚YEARNTOWN💚 -- New Release Romance Reading Vlog || Well, Actually & My Best Friend's Earl

4.5 stars rounded up~

Oooooh my goodness this was so good! Bennett writes longing and especially horny longing so freaking well. From the get go I knew I was going to like this with a set up reminiscent of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and a pair of incredibly likeable main characters like Constance and Oliver.

Constance was such a fun FMC, who is terrified of living a boring life, but with her neurodivergent brain, that’s pretty unlikely. She’s self conscious because of issues that have arisen in her life thanks to her ADHD, but she still was so boisterous and happy. I really loved how Bennett wove Constance’s (obviously undiagnosed) ADHD into so much of her character, without making it feel like the only defining factor of her. The ongoing list element that was used to start each chapter was also a cute tie in. At one point, the world gets to be just too overstimulating and she has to take some time to herself and, having literally read this a day after having my own overstimulation, hit close to home.

Oliver on the opposite side was such a great foil, being so straight laced and organized to the nth degree, but he finds the benefit of letting Constance cause chaos in his days. He was such a simp over her and there was so much delicious yearning from him in particular. There were some nice bits of depth around his relationship to his father and naturally, being engaged to another woman also played up the drama.

Literally my only complaint was I would have liked to see a few more direct interactions between these two before they were falling head over heels for one another, but I also think perhaps they may have some interactions in the prior book that I missed out on.

This was just so much fun, delightfully spicy, cute as heck and swoony to boot. I can’t wait to read the prior book in the series!

"Girls before earls!"

This was such a cute, quick Regency romance with the best kind of "opposites attract" main characters. I adored Connie and Oliver, as well as their family and friends (I can't wait for Hattie's book—next hopefully?). But I especially appreciated not only the author's note at the end but the many different ways I saw myself and my ADHD in Connie throughout the story. So often, those around me don't understand why I am the way I am, or struggle to accept and love me through it, so seeing all of the love Connie received from those around her (and, particuarly, Oliver) just for being who she is was wonderful.

Thanks so much to Forever for the gifted copy for review!

Oliver and Connie I'm obsessed with you!!

The plot was very fun - match-breaking should be an official job in Regency England, and the romance was chef's kiss. I actually caught myself giggling while reading this book, and now I'm so sad the book is over. I really enjoyed the banter and the tension. Plus you can't go wrong with a man absolutely obsessed. I also had no idea how the author was going to get the characters out of the predicament she had written them into, but the resolution was very satisfying and very romantic!

Things I loved:
-Prince Puddles my beloved!!!
-tuesdays 😏
-Connie my adhd queen
-Oliver being obsessed with her and only her
-no third act breakup 🙌🏻

Can't wait for the next book in the series!!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest review

Enjoyed this so much!
Constance is trying to help her friend get out of a marriage and in the process she falls the Earl.
He was also equally smitten with her. He was saving himself for marriage which was adorable. He was pretty rigid and maintained a well kept life. His father didn’t maintain the earldom well and he wanted to live differently.
The daydreaming of Constance was so horny. He would just try to avoid her and she would get such mixed signals lol. Loved it. They really were such a long shot for them to be together since he was an Earl and she was a commoner. The timing has to be perfect with some plans he had in motion to break his betrothal.
I need to go back and read Caroline and Dorian’s book!

"My Best Friend’s Earl" by Bethany Bennett is an absolute delight from start to finish! This book had me laughing out loud with its sharp, witty dialogue and effortlessly engaging humor. The characters are wonderfully crafted, with the female lead stealing the show—she’s vibrant, relatable, and refreshingly bold.

The plot is captivating and flows seamlessly, making it an easy and enjoyable read. The spice adds just the right amount of heat without overshadowing the heartfelt romance. And who doesn’t love a happy ending? Bennett delivers it perfectly, leaving me with a huge smile and a craving for more of her work.

If you’re looking for a funny, feel-good romance with excellent character dynamics and a satisfying finish, "My Best Friend’s Earl" is a must-read!

This is my 5th book by Bethany Bennett. I really liked Book 1 in this series a lot. Her books are so well written.

I thought this was a cute story. I really liked these characters, Constance and Oliver. I loved Constance's antics she suggested be played on Oliver by Althea. So funny. They had such a cute dynamic. I loved the storyline. I loved how she made Oliver a better person and overall really balanced each other. Just an overall really good read.

I liked Constance but I loved Oliver! They were a great pair together. Her ability to pull Oliver away from his anal tendencies was great and lead to fantastic interaction (them both with the kitten!) but Oliver is a great male lead! He was very strict with himself (wearing the same outfit on the same day) but it came off as adorable and charming and Constance came away as playful and endearing when she challenged him. I loved this.

Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.
4.5⭐️, 2ish🔥
What happens when ADHD meets OCD? Well in the case of Constance and Oliver attraction, lust, and Love!! My Best Friend’s Earl brings us back to the delightful world of Martin’s Booksellers and the fascinating women who run it. When I picked up this book to read I realized it was book 2 in the series and immediately put it down so I could read book 1 and I’m so glad I did. There are so many over lapping characters in each of the books and as much as I want to say you can read this as a stand alone, I just think you will understand all the main and secondary characters better if you read Good Duke Gone Wild first.
Connie Martin has always had a curious mind and never met a hobby, task or subject she didn’t want to try, unfortunately it’s finishing said hobby or tasks that has always been the issue. She just can’t seem to keep track of things she wants or needs to accomplish without making out a list. Oliver, Earl of Southwyn likes his life neatly, orderly and unfussy. We first meet these 2 in book 1 where we know Oliver is betrothed to Lady Althea and Constance just left her fiancé at the altar. With book 2 Althea has become good friends with Constance and asks her to help in “Match-breaking” her engagement to Oliver. It’s through a series of trying to cause some upheaval in Oliver’s everyday life that the MCs get to know (and secretly like/lust) each other. There are some sweet moments with a kitten that at just adorable.
What I really enjoyed about the book was that even though the main characters romance is the focus of the story, it is part of an overall multi story line. We get to know why Althea doesn’t want to marry Oliver, why Oliver needs order and security in his life, why Constance has always felt insecure all her life, despite having a loving family. This may put some people off, but I really like the secondary characters and also revisiting with Caro and Dorian from book 2.
My only reason that this wasn’t a 5⭐️ book was that I felt the solution to how everyone will get their HEA became a bit too complicated at the end. But over all this was a throughly enjoyable read and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series, which I felt was set up a bit at the end.
I also want to give a big shout out to Ms. Bennett for writing a character with ADHA in a positive light and how the people around her love and nurture her. It was not surprising to read the author’s notes that she, herself was diagnosed with ADHD.

When your best friend needs you to help break an engagement? You obviously do what's in your power to be her matchbreaker! Girls before Earls! What you might not account for is falling for your best friend's fiance...

I have loved Constance Martin's character from the moment she was introduced in the previous novel. She was this character who enjoyed flirting & the search for the right man. Which led her to leaving her fiance at the alter. Now its months later & although the nickname Inconstant Constance still plagues her, she is trying her best to help run her family bookshop after her cousin's marriage. Until one day her best friend Althea asks for Connie's assistance in finding ways to have Althea's "uptight/rule following" fiance to jilt Althea. So they set out on a plan to add enough chaos into the Earl of Southwyn's life that he will no longer feel that marrying Althea is the best choice.

What they do not know is that Oliver, the Earl of Southwyn, needs the land associated with the bethrothal in order to help his tenants during a disastrous farming year. Both Althea & Oliver's father's betrothed their children well actually Althea's older sister Dorcus, who skirted the marriage by eloping with another man. Leaving Althea to be forced to fufill the "contract". All Oliver wishes to do is the right thing for everyone but himself until he falls for Constance, finding himself doing whatever he can to make everyone happy including himself.

The scene in the study with the feral kitten soon to be named Prince, is not just the scene that Constance finds herself falling in love with Oliver, it is when I did. Goodness, a dishevelled man, cursing & wishing to pass the test set before him by his fiance (& Connie) was unexpected. And a great way to showcase the parts of him that he held reined in.

Oliver was so steadfast. Worked so hard to control and restrain any feelings that when Constance appears messing up everything from the periphery (as they are all her ideas) it makes the most delicious opposites attract story. The moment he snaps & goes pretty much feral for kissing Constance was HOT!

It was really important to be able to see both POVs of Oliver & Constance. How Constance's ADHD affected every level of her life & how Oliver found himself loving Constance for exactly who she was. And in the moments when she was trying to be less of who she is, Oliver immediately noticed. The shiver & him toeing the brick towards her in the carriage was such a small moment but it meant so much. (Although from Constance's POV we know the shiver was not due to the cold.) To be seen was something Constance needed & Oliver saw her for exactly who she was.

I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

My Best Friend's Earl by Bethany Bennett is the second book of her Bluestocking Booksellers Series.
And oh, how much I loved it!

I'd definitely recommend reading the books in order because a lot of characters from book 1 appear in book 2 as well, and it could be quite complicated if you don't know them. 🙂

Constance Martin works as a bookseller and is not the picture-perfect young woman after she ran away from her own wedding. Now her best friend Althea Thompson needs her help because the earl she has the marry isn't the man she wants. Constance and Althea do everything to make the life of the Earl of Southwyn miserable to cancel everything. But then things happen that even Connie, the so-called Matchbreaker, didn't see happening...

Oh my goodness. Being back in the historical romance era was a lovely journey. 😍
I absolutely loooove the books of Bethany Bennett. She knows how to create absolutely handsome and swoon-worthy male main characters, great relatable and unique female main characters, and so much more. 💖

So what's not to love here?
Althea and Connie try their best to make Oliver's life (Earl of Southwyn) a living hell by
Getting chaos into his daily routines... keyword: stray cat
Sometimes, I felt sorry for Oliver because the marriage was not even his fault after all!
So, the ladies from the bookshop aren't that easy to handle and stand up for each other.

The good thing is that Oliver isn't that easy to be intimidated and sees through their plans.
With all the chaos in their lives comes lots of drama, heartbreak, and miscommunication... (Oh boy, how frustrating! 🙈) but also loots of humour, romance, and sizzling chemistry. 😍❤️🫶

Honestly, I really liked it that Connie isn't that ideal young woman who visits balls to get a husband. No, she ran away from her future husband, works in a bookshop, and just has to write down everything to not forget it and stay focused.
The complete opposite is Oliver, Lord Southwyn. He's completely structured, loves everything to be in order, analytical, and has a different waistcoat for every single day. Routine is really important.
So, both are so different, but they have lots of things in common too. A huuuuge heart of gold and the way they fell for each other?! OMG! Be still my beating heart! 💓
I know this is quite a spoiler, but I couldn't stay quiet!! 😍😍😍
First, they don't like each other, but then???
All the things he says to her? How he treats her? PERFECTION!!! 🫠🫠🫠
And Connie learns so much about herself and how much she's really worth. 🙏😊

I absolutely loved this chaotic, dramatic, sometimes frustrating, hilarious, heartwarming, and emotional love story to 1000%.

Thanks a lot to Bethany Bennett and Forever Publishing for this ARC via NetGalley.
This is my honest review in my own words.

Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is the second book of the series and revisits the cousins who help run the family bookstore. It is a sweet and steamy historical romance with an unconventional pairing of bookseller and a member of the aristocracy in a opposites attract romcom situation. Constance Martin is bright, charming, talented, fun loving, and engaging, but she has difficulty focusing, and a tendency to start things but not always follow through with them, and that includes her romantic life. She loves her family and friends dearly and working with her cousins in her parent's bookstore, and abhors stuffiness and boredom.

When she is approached by her good friend, Althea, with an unusual request, she is not slow to render her aid. Because of a longstanding agreement between her family and the parents of Oliver Vincent, the current Earl of Southwyn, she is betrothed to Southwyn. Because Althea's affections are engaged elsewhere, she does not want to wed the Earl, but he steadfastly abides by the agreement and for other reasons he does not explicitly declare, he wants to continue with plans to wed Althea. To this end, Althea approaches Constance to be her "matchbreaker" and help her plot to break off from Southwyn. Constance, from her interactions with the man who also happens to be the best friend of the husband of her newly married cousin, believes Southwyn to be a boring stuffed shirt and is more than willing and ready to scheme with Althea.

As Constance and Althea plot, Constance runs interference and becomes more frequently in the presence of Southwyn. As his world is turned topsy turvy by their hijinks, Southwyn reveals more of his true self to Constance and she finds herself growing attached to the man he is underneath the orderly controlled exterior. Likewise, Southwyn finds himself liking and admiring Constance. But he is determined to do the honorable thing, which also includes protecting Althea, though she is not aware of this, from her own father's plots and poor management.

A lovely story with some lovely characters; I do love the supportive sisterly relationship between the cousins, and the brotherly relationship between the male characters. This is a warm and likeable story with some fun comedic components and I always adore the inclusion of animal characters as well as the good unstuffing of a stuffed shirt. Love the scenario where Southwyn is undone by the street kitten, and how the cat becomes elevated to feline royalty by him. Who doesn't love a man who loves animals?

I voluntarily read and reviewed this advanced copy from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed the first book in the Bluestocking Booksellers previously and fell in love with the author's writing style. She had an excellent combination of charming and intellectual without seeming too obnoxious. Her heroines are a bit too modern for my taste in a historical setting, but I'll allow it. I related to Connie in a physical sense: unruly curly hair, diminutive stature, and zaftig figure but we were opposite in temperament. Our hero called her a "teacup-sized tempest" on multiple occasions. These two had excellent chemistry together and it made me sad that he was engaged to someone else for the majority of the novel. His fiancee specifically requested Connie to help break off their engagement that was drawn up before she was even born. Doesn't that just bum you out?!

Oliver and Connie were so cute together and I loved their forbidden slow burn romance. The way they bonded over a feral kitten was wonderful. I hate dogs and it's nice to finally get some feline-focused plotlines thrown my way. Oliver was a great love interest, although I'm not one of those girlies who go wild over virgin heroes. I don't mind if the female is uninitiated, but I prefer the male's Mt. St. Helen's not to prematurely erupt. It tickled me to no end that he had a set schedule to explode on Wednesdays exclusively until he met the heroine. I was shocked when I read that chapter and had to take a break to giggle. The author still fast forwards scenes and breezes past bits I would have preferred to read entirely, much to my chagrin. I'll choose which sections I skim, thank you!

I read My Best Friend's Earl in one sitting and I stayed up late to finish it. I was that invested and I wanted our couple to get their happy ending. I wasn't pleased by the unhappy engagement, but it all worked out in their favor. I still adored Bennett's writing once again. I'm looking forward to the next cousin's romance. I imagine the future book in the Bluestocking Booksellers series will be just as dreamy as its predecessors. Although my personal preference is for my love interest to be unfettered and lack the title of My Best Friend's Earl.

I'M GOING TO STEAL IT. THAT'S MINE NOW.<br />

4.5 Stars!

We are back in Bethany Bennett’s Bluestocking Booksellers universe with book 2, My Best Friend’s Earl. This time, it is the lovely, lively Constance Martin’s time to find love. The crazy twist? She is recruited to be the matchbreaker of her best friend’s engagement with the Earl of Southwyn, Oliver Vincent.

Constance’s best friend, Althea, wants nothing to do with the man her father wants her to marry. Originally, Oliver was contracted to marry Althea’s older sister, Dorcus. When Dorcus eloped, her fiancé was passed down to Aletha. Neither sister had anything bad to say about Oliver, but he was more of a brother figure than a husband. Oliver wants to go through with the marriage to get back a piece of land with a river that his father had sold to Aletha’s father. That piece of land was important to Oliver who wanted to develop a canal and create new revenue for his estate. Then Constance Martin comes into his life and turns everything in his life upside down.

While Constance’s first inclination is to make Oliver’s life so miserable as Aletha’s fiancé, she actually learns how easy it would be to love him. Step one is to pass off a street cat to him because Aletha wants a lot of cats once married. When Oliver ultimately asks Constance for help, it is her first step to falling in love.

Constance is an interesting character for the time period. She had left a groom at the alter and had a few other relationships, yet she never saw herself getting married. Her parents were contemplating moving away for their retirement, but don’t think Constance would be able to handle the responsibility of the store on her own or with her cousin, Hattie. While some might see Constance as flighty and forgetful, I believe she is a woman with her own human weaknesses. Technically, Constance’s strength as a matchbreaker brings her the greatest joy, the love of Oliver. While Oliver is stuck between marrying Aletha to ultimately help his tenants or following his heart to Constance, he is smart and incredibly endearing.

I loved every step that Oliver and Constance took to secure their future together. There were times I had grave concerns on how Bennett would give us a happy ending, but she pulled all the twists and turns together and got us there. I can’t wait for more stories from this universe!

I received My Best Friend's Earl for free. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Constance “Connie” Martin is the youngest daughter of a bookshop owner. She does not mind the reputation she has earned for jilting her fiancé at the altar. When a friend comes to her shop and asks for a matchbreaker, Connie decides to help. She devises plots to make the stuffy, straightlaced earl to end the engagement. Connie never anticipated in falling for the man herself. Will Connie succeed? Or will this endeavor end in heartbreak?

Oliver Vincent, the Earl of Southwyn, prefers a staid and orderly life. He intends to honor the betrothal agreement his late father made with their neighbor. Unfortunately, his fiancé does not feel the same. Oliver knows the wedding must take place; however, he becomes distracted by her vivacious, chaotic friend. The woman is his complete opposite. Will Oliver allow Connie to disrupt his life? Or will the wedding continue as planned?

In GOOD DUKE GONE WILD, I knew that Connie would be a good match-up for Oliver. Their separate nature benefits the other. Connie’s impulses disrupt Oliver’s organized existence, while his staidness acts as a grounding for her chaotic thoughts. What I like the most is that Connie has ADHD, before it was widely known as in today’s era. The author does a great job of showing the trials that she faces on a day-to-day basis.

Oliver pleasantly surprised me! I do not read many romances where the man is the virgin. It is a nice (and refreshing) change of pace from the usual “experienced” male lead. I also admire his reasons for abstaining. Very noble. What I love the most about Oliver is how he could tell when Connie’s cheerful facade was faked. He hated it, but he never called her out on it.

Series: Yes, it is the second book in Bethany Bennett’s historical romance series, BLUESTOCKING BOOKSELLERS. The story can standalone. There are no on-going problems or controversy that spill over from the first book. Dorian and Caro, the couple from GOOD DUKE GONE WILD, do play helpful, supporting roles in this story.

I have a suspicion that the next book will center around Hattie and Lord Bixby. Perhaps it is my wishful thinking after their interaction near the end of the book. If so, then I eagerly await the next installment. If not, then I hope the author will consider writing a series about the intriguing man and his quest to find suitable partners for his sisters. I would definitely read it!
