Jessica Thorne certainly knows how to captivate and leave readers eager for more. I adored "A Touch of Shadows," yet "A Kiss of Flame" managed to surpass it unexpectedly. Fortunately, the wait for the third book won't be long, as it's set to release next month.
The saga of Wren unfolds as she is pursued for the throne, while her mother Elodie and Roland await trial. Wren's shadow magic is intensifying, making concealment increasingly challenging. Discovery by the people of Asteroth means certain death. Finn, going against all his teachings, aids in safeguarding Wren's secret. Their bond is tender, and the agony of separation is intense for him. Yet, could there be other forces at work? As enemies ready their invasion and peril looms, their allegiances face the ultimate test.
Wren starts to realize that the perceptions of light and dark magic are not as clear-cut as portrayed, witnessing the impact on Elodie firsthand.
Wren and Finn's tale captivated me, but the conclusion left me reeling, questioning all I had believed about their bond. I'm a fan of Jessica's cliffhangers, especially knowing another book is always on the horizon. I eagerly await the continuation.

Is there anything better than a sequel that not only lives up to the first book, but is even better??
This book picks up immediately after the events of A Touch of Shadows, with Wren, Finn, Elodie and Roland all gathered together and awaiting the trial of the lost queen. Where the first book gave us a thrilling chase through the dark and enchanted forest reminiscent of the The Fellowship of the Ring, A Kiss of Flame gives us political intrigue and a richly expanding cast of characters, locations, and cultures.
Wren continues with her struggle to understand where she came from, and to find the balance of the light and dark forces within herself. As we are introduced to more of Finn’s family, devout worshippers of the embodiment of the dark side of magic, the reader gets to see that the Nox is not necessarily “evil” - and similarly, in understanding just how much it costs Elodie to be a vessel of the Aurum, that the light side of magic is not inherently “good”.
There is also an ever growing sense of much larger forces at work as the sentient magics seem to push and pull our characters towards a predetermined (if unknown) fate.
The spice level is perfectly done, adding to Wren and Finn’s growing relationship without distracting from the main plot of the book. The delicate balance of their relationship adds tension to the story, as the question of whether their attraction is real or the influence of the Nox remains uncertain. The love story between Elodie and Roland is also very well written, demonstrated in the ways they act for each other, even without any real moments of physical affection.
THAT CLIFFHANGER LEFT ME SPEECHLESS! I cannot wait for the next book to come out - I will literally be on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next!

Book two in the lost Queen series. Wren, Finn, Elodie and Roland … it feels good to be back with them. Only this time things are way more complicated than they should have been. This book starts right where book one left off. Of course it did. Because our beautiful Queen was about to stand on trial for abandoning her kingdom in time of need. We have more action. More bursts of power. More light and more darkness. More Aurumn and more Nox. More conflict. More political intrigues. More member of Finn’s family (like we needed more). More secrets Elodie was still keeping. More mother/daughter bonding. More of Wren being confused because people keeping using her for their own gain. But we also have lovers reunited after a long time. And we also have two new lovers with maybe some more time to explore the love and passion they feel for one another. Even tho her power over him is undeniable and it’s strong. I loved how the author brought us plot twist after plot twist. So many turns, sometimes it felt complicated to keep track of them. But by a certain point it felt like they were all puzzle pieces that were supposed to lead us right there. The truth of Wren’s identity. Her power. Elodie’s enormous power. And Finn. And after that TERRIBLE ending that left me with an awful sense of wonder and fear … I need the next book!!! RIGHT NOW !!

Great sequel! In the second installation of the Lost Queen series, Wren finds herself navigating life at court in preparation for the queen's upcoming trial. In addition, tensions run exceptionally high in the kingdom with the introduction of the Ilanthians and the potential for an internal coup within the reagent's council. With all this, Wren and Finn attempt to navigate their surroundings and fight to keep the Nox at bay.
Ok, so I liked this book more than the first. I felt like despite the first half of the book being slow, we found out more of the backstory and Wren's origins in this book. For the last 30% I couldn't put the book down I was so stressed and curious about what was happening. The cliffhanger? Insane. I feel like I should have seen something like that coming, but I was so sure of Finn. I do wish we got a little more explanation, like whether the Nox is using him or if he was always like this, but I'm sure we'll get that in the next book. Another difference in this book is we got somewhat of straightforward explanations for things, which I really appreciated. I can only guess and speculate so much before I want actual confirmation as to what's going on.
I'm also really excited that we're going to see Ilanthus and Finn interact with his family in the next book. Really hoping we get more of the backstory on Finn and all of his scouting missions back to Ilanthus that were mentioned in the first book- the entire reason he and Wren crossed paths to begin with.
Also random, but I would appreciate a map at the beginning of the book. Several places get mentioned like the College of Winter or other neighboring kingdoms not mentioned by name, but it's hard to keep track of where everything is.
Overall, I can't wait for the next book because after that cliffhanger I MUST KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN.

This had a much more intense feel to it, the stakes are high now that Elodie and Wren are back where they don't want to be!!! And that ending with Finnan - It filled me with so much dread. The evil is rising and Wren is in its sights. But the one thing I wondered at the end, was who was manipulating who!
There are some shocks, especially with one of Wren's 'maids' - shocking! There are still so many unanswered questions; thankfully, I can jump into the next book immediately! I can't wait and I can't wait to go to College of Winter!
I loved seeing more about Finn and his family, and I did like Hestia. So much more foreboding and when you meet the DAD!! oh, my days!
The writing is captivating, and it has you hooked. As soon as I started the book I knew that I would be absorbed into every word of this tale and it had me going all over the place with my emotions!!!

This is the second book in The Lost Queen series. I originally received book one as an alc and immediately had to read book 2! This series is addictive! I found it on Audible and absolutely devoured it. The plot is gripping. The characters are continuously growing in depth and complexity. The secrets upon secrets and the prophecy set to cause chaos to the entire world. This story keeps you on the edge of your seat. That ending, oml. I need to dive into Book 3 asap!!

After the events of A Touch of Shadows, we continue the story of Wren, Finn, Elodie and Roland. I love having all of their perspectives because our girl Wren still doesn't know a thing. We traveled to more places in the realm and understood the world and magic system even more.
The magic in this trilogy is unique, without giving away the plot of the first book. There are two warring countries who are now at peace but still don't like each other. They each swear an oath to essentially a god - the Nox is dark magic and the Aurum is light magic. The witches of each country serves their respective god, as do the knights. There are prophesies and court scheming, of course!
Elodie has been keeping secrets her whole life, but it would have been nice for her to share what she knows to keep everyone safe! Wren and her reluctant leader tendencies got under my skin at some points.
I loved getting more of Finn's backstory and understanding his family more. This introduced an interesting look at good vs. evil that I'm sure will be explored further in the third book.
I switched to the ebook instead of the audiobook for this sequel and I could highlight and comprehend more of the story and history, but I really missed the narrator. She really brought the story to life for me. So I will switch back to the audiobook for the third book.
The first book had a bit of instalove, but of course there is a reason for it. It's a fantasy book!! So give this one a chance if you enjoy a gothic fantasy with two romances plot points and an atmospheric magic system and setting.

Possible Spoilers...
In a world we have so many series where book 2 tends to fall flat and be filler, Jessica did an AMAZING job with providing actual meat to the story!
We had SO much more world building, the plot thickens, and we get 4 POV’s.
We are able to see more of the secrets uncovered as we get further into the series.
My brain is still trying to wrap itself around that ending tho... 🤯 WUT?? PLEASE, I need book 3!!
Highlights:
“My little bird” - Okay, we have Leander AND Elodie both refer to Wren by this pet name. Did I miss an obvious reason why?? INTERESTING...
Finn:

I dropped into this world cold, having not read book#1 (bad Nikki)! However I was soon at home in this world of magic, shadows and epic adventures. I soon felt that I had traversed the world with Wren, Finn, Elodie and co. I soon new their quirks and habits and what buttons we should NOT push!
Learning about the various courts and politicking between witches and animosity but political niceties between kingdoms. It was like medieval Europe had come to life on the pages - just with a bit more magic added!
I really felt for Wren, she's so used to being free to do what she wants, she feels trapped in "her" castle. But she still manages to undertake little rebellions to annoy The Maidens et al. I did wonder how she's react to all the royal retinue and she handled just as I thought she would, with huge disdain!
As in life nothing is completely black and white, good or evil. You can see how both sides in this tale feel they are the good guys. There is ging to have to be a lot of compromising made to keep any kind of peace!
Spicy but not heavily so. There is a lot of what I would call "hand clenching" Mr Darcy moments by Finn and to a certain extent Roland. There is big cliffhanger but the 3rd book is out soon so there won't be a huge wait to see were things go.
Learning about the various courts and politicking between witches and animosity but political niceties between kingdoms. It was like medieval Europe had come to life on the pages - just with a bit more magic added!
I really felt for Wren, she's so used to being free to do what she wants, she feels trapped in "her" castle. But she still manages to undertake little rebellions to annoy The Maidens et al. I did wonder how she's react to all the royal retinue and she handled just as I thought she would, with huge disdain!

Oh my goodness! Such a good sequel!
I get so scared with sequels, they can either be amazing or disappointing and this one was certainly not disappointing.
So much information is revealed in this book, we learn more about the characters and their backgrounds and how those backgrounds are twisted together (maybe even in ways that the characters don't even realize).
I especially enjoyed the will-she-won't-she undercurrent that goes throughout the whole story for our main character Wren and the throne.
These characters are so likable, you feel exactly what you're supposed to feel for them. Their emotions and experiences feel real and understandable. And the drama and confusion that their situations cause for these characters was so intriguing and captivating (I'm trying so hard not to spoil since this is a sequel, so I'm sorry if this all sounds so vague).
AND SHADOW MAGIC! The shadow magic was so cool! I loved seeing it in action and hearing the explanations about it. I want more!

The author did it again, oh my! These cliffhangers are killing me and I really need the 3rd book right now!
This book was a quick read, like the first one. It was suspenseful and twisted and again, unpredictable.
“They saw only a girl to be used, not a woman with a heart and mind of her own. They thought her helpless. But she was far from helpless.”
Wren is still super powerful and eventually learns to control her magic with some help of an ilanthian witch - I never thought this is possible, but I really liked Hestia, she is powerful and wise and somehow seems very trustworthy.
“‘I would leave with you in a heartbeat.’ She would if it would work. And why not? Why shouldn’t they? Just go, right now, and never look back.”
And oh I wished they would’ve ran away.. Instead Finn did something stupid I guess and it broke my heart. I’m still not sure what happened there..
Hopefully the next book will answer all my unanswered questions and be the perfect ending of this trilogy 🤞🏻

It took me months to read this book, when I can usually read a book in days! I had to keep taking breaks because the first half of the book DRAGGED on and on. I loved the first book, but this second one was hard to finish. The primary reason for me is that it is listed as a romance, but early on the Wren's "mother" Elodie flat out says the romance isn't real, it's magically created. Finn is "in love" with Wren because he is being enslaved by Wren's magic. To add to this horror, Wren later realizes the same and just shrugs it off. I can't get behind that storyline or a heroine that thinks a non-consensual relationship is okay.
I kept going because other reviews mention a twist ending. I wasn't as impressed with it as others were. Surprisingly, this was better than the first! I still have an issue with how Wren and Finn came to be. Time passed between these two reads so I had difficult jumping back into the dense world. There are a lot of terms and I don't think I regained my understanding of magic system and court politics until the very end, if even. The action is fast-paced and I found myself flying through the pages to see what happened next. On the other hand, I was getting tired of the repetitiveness the author used. Every time, Wren didn't know how to control her magic which happened often, bad things ensued. This felt too convenient of a device to move the plot forward and I felt frustrated by that. The ending is a classic betrayal cliffhanger! I am so curious to that particular character's motives. When he throws back his warning to never trust anyone in his family—GAGGED. Sorry, Wren. He got you there. I am very excited for this new character development since his character has always seemed to have sat on the sidelines.

This sequel is definitely an improvement over the first book! While the pacing still has moments of dragging and speeding up, the great parts of this series always make powering through worthwhile.
The political intrigue was far more interesting in this installment. While it has slightly more spice than A Touch of Shadows, it's still quite moderate.
I loved the shadow magic in this book because you finally get to see it used and get clear explanations of how it works. Although the heavy backstory and repetition sometimes made the book feel disjointed, it was valuable for showing how deeply connected all the characters are. The ending was easily the best part—the foreshadowing across both books was brilliant, and the final scene still hits you right in the gut!

Book 2 does not disappoint. Love, suspense, plot twists, and betrayal that drives me crazy with a cliffhanger. A Kiss Of Flame was an ebook ARC, and after listening to A Touch Of Shadows on audio, I can’t wait till I can get the audiobook for book 2! If you like a well paced story and a unique magic system The Lost Queen series is for you! A fantasy with romance and spice giving mystery vibes. Great world building with glossary and chapter epigraphs. Warring kingdoms, light vs dark, hidden identity, shadow mommy. I am looking forward to getting into my ARC of book 3, A Crown Of Darkness! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and as with the last, the narrator gets 10/10 for her performance! We continue to follow Wren, Finn and Elodie after the epic conclusion in A Touch of Shadows. Wren continues to grow and learn about her origin in this book, but as with the last, not everything is as it seems. Wren must continue to hide her magic and her relationship with Finn and Elodie is brought forth to answer for her perceived crimes from her past.
We get shadow magic, light vs. dark, lost queen returns, betrayal and so much more! This series is completely addictive and I cannot wait to dive into book 3!

I feel like I’ve been left with more questions than answers and I’m not sure if I like the feeling!
A kiss of flame was definitely a really easy read, it was fast paced and lots of action.
I just wanted to connect more with Wren and Finn though. The first book promised an unwavering epic love story and that promise has been somewhat broken and now I’m not sure what to believe!
Im very much trying to trust the process and also trust in Finn. Because after all the events in book 2, book 3 is shaping up to be a pretty exciting adventure.
There’s lots of characters, relationships and storyline’s that hang in the balance and I’m just hoping that A Crown of Darkness delivers!

What a great continuation in this fantasy world. The constant struggle to decide between light and darkness that poor Wren has to endure is tested so many times. She also finally learns what she actually is. Finn is the one constant in her life and he has so much love for her. The twist at the end had me screaming and it better all work out in book 3. The magical systems of the light Aurum and of the dark, the Nox, keeps the story interesting. Read this as an ARC, will be reading book three next.

I really enjoyed this second book in the series. It moves along the story nicely and throws in some very interesting plot twists. Some things were predictable, but others were definitely not as clear cut.
I really enjoyed the introduction of Finn's cousin. That was interesting, and I really liked her view on things and the balance between the Aurum and Nox, which is something I have thought would best serve the world from book 1.
The cliffhanger was something else though, and I desperately need to know what happens next!

This was such a great sequel. I was pleasantly surprised by all the reveals. I would highly recommend this series to readers who are new to fantasy with romance. It is easily digestible. This series does have spice. Just to let you know. I can’t wait to pick up book 3 whenever it comes out. I want to know where the story is going to go.

Didn’t find this book as good as the first one. I thought we would get more spice between the 2 main characters and we didn’t get much. The political intrigue got more interesting, but how it was written made the timing of things feel off and I couldn’t really follow the timeline of events well. Not happy with the ending (very mad at a character), but I am hoping that all gets explained and hashed out in the third.

November 15, 2024It was an interesting way to reveal the past events of the story in this second volume. I was hungry to find out why things were the way they were, and this volume did deliver. It also made me want to read the third book in the series to see the outcome. I had a hard time stopping myself from reading and stayed up late until I reached a point at which I was willing to take a break. Breathless!

The Last Queen Series is the perfect palette cleanser fantasy series. The books are short, and the story is enthralling. Wren has been raised by a hedgewitch in the middle of no where, now in book two, Wren finds herself in a castle in the middle of political upheaval. Everyone wants to know who Wren is, including Wren. Is she the daughter of the long lost Queen or is she something darker and more sinister.

What a read this is! Just as I thought I had the characters sorted they flipped. This is a suspense filled intricately twisted book. Nothing is as it seems and the ending was shocking!
