New York Times bestselling author Nancy Thayer delighted readers with her sparkling Hot Flash Club series. Now she has written a vibrant new novel set within a tight-knit island community, where two women struggle to rekindle a childhood friendship damaged by harsh words, betrayal, and the passing years.

Lexi Laney and Clare Hart grew up together swimming in the surf, riding remote bike trails, and having wondrous adventures across picturesque Nantucket. And when it was time to share intimate secrets and let their girlish imaginations run free, they escaped to their magical private Moon Shell Beach.

But nothing stays the same. With the complicated pressures of adulthood, their intense bond is frayed, hurtful words are exchanged, and Lexi flees Nantucket to a life of luxury while Clare stays behind.

Ten years later, a newly divorced Lexi returns to make amends with those she left in her wake. Living at home with her father and dating a gorgeous carpenter, Clare still simmers with resentment toward her glamorous friend. And when Lexi opens an upscale clothing boutique next door to Clare’s chocolate shop, their paths are fated to cross.

Their emotional reunion is beset with major Lexi’s return sets off a series of startling events that fracture the status quo and set the town gossips’ tongues wagging. And as Clare’s life takes an abrupt detour, Lexi wonders if the happiness and peace they once knew on Moon Shell Beach will, in the end, prove to be as fleeting as time and the tide. In the turbulent adult world, awash in failed loves and romantic disappointment, can childhood dreams still come true?

Irresistible reading, Moon Shell Beach explores the evolution of a tumultuous lifelong friendship, the power of forgiveness, and the rewards of believing in miracles.

Clare Hart and Lexi Laney are the best of friends. They live on Nantucket Island and spend their summers playing at each other’s house or going to the beach. One day they find a special beach that is hidden off a country road. They claim the beach as their own and call it moon shell beach. They promise one another that they will never bring just any regular guy there, but only the men they end up marrying.

The years fly by and Clare and Lexi begin to drift apart. Clare has her first romance with Jesse Gray, who is one of the sexiest boys in the senior class at her high school. He is her first love and the one she wants to spend the rest of her life with. Lexi doesn’t care for Jesse and thinks Clare is making a big mistake. The two friends fight and by the time they are in college, they are barely speaking to one another. Lexi meets Ed Hardin, a land developer, and a much older man. He wines and dines her and she elopes with him. It won’t be until ten years later and after divorcing Ed, that Lexi will return to the island and all those she left behind.

When Lexi returns home, everything seems to be the same. Her parents are a bit stiff around her because she was busy living a whirlwind lifestyle. Her brother Adam seems pleased to have her back and has his own thriving veterinarian practice. Lexi wants to open an upscale clothing store and knows just the person to ask for advice. Clare is in for a shock when she sees Lexi after all this time.

These two women may have their own personal problems, but they understand the need for building a friendship with one another again. Things come to a head when Clare and Jesse break up and he turns to Lexi for comfort. Clare feels like a new woman and finally acts on her desire for Lexi’s brother Adam, whom she has had feelings for ever since she was thirteen. But then a life changing experience happens to Lexi where she will need Clare now more than ever.

MOON SHELL BEACH is a light and airy book perfect for summer reading. The first part of the book is a nice read where Nancy Thayer has written a wonderful relationship between two women that begins with them as two little girls on the cusp of womanhood all the way to adults who have responsibilities that lead to some interesting problems for them both. Clare and Lexi are two characters readers will sympathize with and will hope that Lexi, a woman who relied on a man for so long, will be able to be independent and not disappoint those she cares about.

The setting of Nantucket Island brings a nice flavor to the story, where if you close your eyes you can hear the waves and smell the sand. That was one of my favorite things in reading Moon Shell Beach. I loved the feeling of the community and the support Clare and Lexi have from their family and the two men in their lives.

Unfortunately, things become a bit strange when Jesse and Lexi embark on a no string affair, especially after Lexi has said countless times that she doesn’t care for Jesse. Their attraction for one another comes out of left field and just didn’t make sense. I felt as if Moon Shell Beach morphed into a bad soap opera with the bed hopping and if Ms. Thayer had stuck to the dynamics of the friendship between Clare and Lexi, the story would have been a much more poignant and emotional read.

The first part of Moon Shell Beach was lovely, but towards the middle and end the tone of the book changed so suddenly that I felt as if I were missing something that I had found in the first one-hundred pages or so. Nancy Thayer’s writing does grab you and I can see other readers enjoying the sights and sounds of small town island life with two women who are trying to find their place in this world as they come to grips with themselves and the everyday problems that may arise.

A predictably comforting “beach” read, “Moon Shell Beach” brings to the reader all the ordinary elements of such a tale—friendship, betrayals, redemption—with the satisfying culmination in romance.

Lexi Laney and Clare Hart grew up on Nantucket Island, fast friends who revel in their beach adventures —specifically those involving a unique island haunt, a hidden cove they have named “Moon Shell Beach.” When their bond is frayed by serious disagreements, Lexi leaves the island with her new husband, wealthy Ed Hardin. Clare remains behind, engulfed in island life, and opens her own “Sweet Hart” chocolate shop.

When Lexi returns many years later, divorced and bereft of any money or comforts (due to a prenuptial agreement), she opens a boutique—right next door to Clare’s. She specializes in distinctive items, many of them expensive, and has named her shop “Moon Shell Beach.”

More resentment arises, as Clare feels that Lexi’s name for the shop is another betrayal. She has co-opted something that belonged to both of them.

The author brings the story to a satisfying, yet predictable conclusion, with the women forging a new bond and also finding new romance.

Thayer’s style is easy to delve into, and except for the predictability of the events, it is a satisfying read. One that deserves four stars.

Wonderful story with such great characters you will quickly become immersed in their lives. The two friends hurting each other’s feelings and making up is very realistic. The young girl waiting for her father to return from sea is a poignant part of the story—She never loses hope. Happy ending!

Nancy Thayer was a new author to me, so I started with this Library book ... and will continue with the others in the 5-book 'beach series'. As I was reading, I categorized as YA fiction, which is fine with me. I enjoyed the book, and when I enjoy a book, and when the writing flows easily, there are no formatting issues and I was not left with a feeling of 'sadness', then I will give a 5-star rating. I don't agree with 1-star ratings on this.

So, now I am off to read her 'Summer House' novel.

Lame. Best word I could use to describe this book. Hated the characters, entire storyline was childish- one minute, the girl is furious with her friend and the next minute she is totally over what upset her in the first place. Couldn't wait to finish it.

This is probably the worst book that I have read this year.

Since I am currently away from my husband, I only read chick lit books.

When I saw this book and its summary, I thought, well, this is interesting.

It's a story of two best friends who went through difficulties.

I like stories about friendship and love but man, I do not know what the author wants the book to be.

The sex scenes, the extra characters who the author thought would be lovable, the shallow plot are just some of the things that I do not like about this book.

And the main characters? You would find it hard to love them. They are too unreal for me.

I find Nancy Thayer's most recent books to lack in the character development that marked some of her earlier works. However having said that I still enjoyed this book on a rainy cold Sunday afternoon - it was suitably distracting and engaging.

I got into this book, like a good beach read. Nevermind that it's 37 degrees out and my comforter isn't keeping me warm enough. But the writing style, the images of Nantucket, all made me feel like I was part of the island, too.

It's not prize winning material, but it's a good story. Maybe a little formulaic at times, but the interaction and relationships between the grown women and the young girl are worth the read. "Hope" is a constant theme, and it's a feel good book for the most part.

Definitely light reading, especially if you're stuck in an airport over the holidays.

Picked for a beach read, & it was very readable. However, ridiculous in the love department. Also, a "dramatic" rescue that fell very flat for me. Overall, meh....

Two teenagers, who find a secret beach on Nantucket, separate for a decade. An easy summer beach read.

The sheer number of ways authors come up with to overzealously sexualize puberty never ceases to amaze me. (I mean that in a more general sense, but its especially prominent in this book lol)

I understand its simply a beach-read type of book too, but it was super dissatisfying for even that genre.

If the plot wasn't as focused on who was more fortunate, or who was sleeping with whom at what time, with random side characters thrown in for no real added effect, and instead actually focused on the content and attributes of claire and lexi's relationship as they grew up (besides just pointlessly orbiting around their predictably-unfaithful husbands) i think it would've been a lot more enjoyable of a read. It definitely reads as a book that tries to play itself off as deep and even a bit reflective of class differences, but instead just comes off as tone deaf and shallow

I havent yet read any of Ms Thayer's other books, but after this one I don't believe im going to try them anytime soon :/

I’m developing this weird attraction to this woman’s books. The characters are, for the most part, just awful people. They make life decisions like 12 year old girls. Yet, I can’t stop myself from reading her stuff. It’s like a train wreck but in a really lovely location so it doesn’t seem so bad. Side note, the sex scenes are hilarious and not to be missed!

My first book by this author and it was very easy to read. Beautifully written story about rekindled friendships & discovering new love. Wished it continued. The Nantucket setting makes it a perfect summer read! Highly recommend!

fun story following two friends from childhood who grew apart and end up opening shops next to each other. This is a story of redemption, friendship, love lost, new love, forgiveness, flings, gossip... and all the good stuff a novel is made up of. It's a nice, quick, lighthearted beach read!

Lexi Laney and Clare Hart grew up together and lived an idyllic life in picturesque Nantucket. As children, they were forever sharing wondrous adventures and spending time together as best friends. And when it was time to share intimate secrets and let their imaginations run free, they escaped to their own private hideaway: Moon Shell Beach. But nothing ever stays the same. Once the complicated pressures of adulthood encroach, their intense bond of friendship becomes frayed, hurtful words are exchanged, and Lexi flees Nantucket for a life of luxury while Clare stays behind.

A decade later, a newly divorced Lexi returns to make amends with those she left in her wake - particularly Clare, who still simmers with resentment toward her friend. And as Clare's life takes an abrupt detour, Lexi wonders if the happiness and peace they once knew on Moon Shell Beach will, in the end, prove to be as fleeting as time and the tide.

I wish that I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. For the most part, it was very enjoyable, and I think Nancy Thayer is a wonderful writer. However, in my opinion, the plot began to derail slightly towards the end. The book certainly started off very strongly, but certain plot twists just didn't seem all that plausible to me.

As a result, I had to give Moon Shell Beach: A Novel by Nancy Thayer an A! I'm very glad to have read this book, and will certainly read more from this author in the future. However, I think that I will hold off on that for a short while.

The story behind this is good, but it gets modeled. I did listen to this on audible, so first, I want to address the narrator. Her speech pattern, trying to differentiate between the two main characters often turned into what sounded like baby talk. Rather than sounding like grown women, they often sounded like adolescence. Moreover, the narrator often went into the same speech pattern for her narration. And this made the sex scenes disturbing. Also, I’m not around come person, so I can do without the sex scenes. He did nothing to move the story forward and I hear somebody talking about touching an interaction in what sounds like the voice of a 12 year old, it’s just creepy.
Back to the book, it really was a good story, but without too many spoilers, one of the sub stories turns out to be the climax? I don’t get it. Especially since another storyline was left wide-open. This was my second book by the author, I like the other book better. So I’ll give her one more shot. But if this was the first book at red by her, I would not return.

OK, I was bored on Sunday afternoon and picked this out of order to just read something light. And light it is--the perfect mindless book for an afternoon at the beach! Just don't expect anything more than that. It follows the lives of two childhood friends living on Nantucket over the course of 20 years or so. One falls in love as a teenager with a guy who can't keep his hands off women and the other runs away with an older real estate developer. In the process of this, they damage their friendship, which is then rekindled 10 or so years later when the real estate developer is divorced and the woman returns to Nantucket to open a clothing store right next door to the other woman who owns a candy shop. I won't reveal anything further, except to say that the plot is predictable, and the ending is traditionally happy. I think I finished it in about 2 hours.

I have to say, I am partial to books about friendship and the beach, but this was an excellent book. I first read Nancy Thayer back in 1995 when I came across Belonging. I still re-read that book over and over.

Thayer's characters are real. You want to get to know them. You hate them, you love them, hate them some more and love them in the end. You find yourself cheering on Clare and Lexi throughout the book, trying not to take sides, just wanted the friendship to make it.

While reading this book, I found myself longing for a best friend. This book is different than other friendship books, there is no death, no dying. In fact, it ends in such a way that you are left deciding for yourself where you want these characters to go.

An enjoyable book - perfect for taking to the beach or for curling up with on a rainy day, when you're dreaming of the beach! Set on Nantucket, Lexi & Clare, best friends since girlhood, make very different choices after high school graduation. Clare remains on the island engaged to her philandering high school sweetheart, while Lexi marries a wealthy real estate developer and travels the world. Now, ten years later, Lexi is back. Will they be able to get past old grievances and slights (real & imagined) to rekindle their friendship? 3 1/2 stars

This was an easy read and it was ok. I can’t say that I really cared for either of the main characters though. They just didn’t have any redeeming qualities. Then the ending was SO open ending I was like, what the heck!!! How could Thayer possibly think was a possible way to end this book unless she was going to write a sequel. However after not really caring for this one, I seriously doubt I would read a sequel.

Anyway, I really had hoped I would like this book. There are others of hers that are better.

A great summer read. Hooks the reader from the first page and moves along at a good pace. Perhaps a little to idealistic as far as the forgiving relationship between the girls, but it was a pleasure to escape from the realities of life relationship. Not a book for those who like to delve into the characters but if, like me, wanted to escape on a summer's day, this was the book that met that criteria.
