Unbroken Heroes #4

The Hero She Deserves

Rate this book
When he goes to investigate a blaring smoke alarm, the last thing he expects to find is Hollywood’s hottest actress…naked.

Deputy Sheriff Sawyer Lane likes the pace of life on Maui. After years as a Navy SEAL and in Ghost Ops, he likes that no one shoots at him. Coming to the island saved him. He still can’t sleep, but he’ll take the sun, sand, and solitude.

Then Oscar-winning actress Hollis Stanton rents the house next to his and torpedoes his solitude. When she sets her coffee machine on fire, he meant to help, not see every glorious inch of her from her russet-red hair to her red-painted toenails.

Soon, they’re running into each other everywhere, and it doesn’t take all of Sawyer’s finely-honed skills to know she’s in trouble and hiding from something. Or someone.

Hollis Stanton usually loves her life—movie roles she enjoys, an Oscar on her mantel, financial security. She’s come a long way from the poor, gangly redhead in hand-me-down clothes. But one stupid party held by a powerful movie producer changes everything.

She accidentally overhears something she shouldn’t have.

Now, someone is following her, breaking into her house, and crashing into her car. Her plan is to lay low in Hawaii. What wasn’t in her plan is the big, muscular, and rugged deputy sheriff next door. Nor is their scorching attraction.
When danger closes in, Hollis realizes Sawyer is the real deal—a hero with scars, who helps those in need.

A hero who will do anything to protect her.

The Hero She Deserves is the fourth book in Anna Hackett's Unbroken Heroes series. This series mixes romance, suspense, and adventure. It features strong men who are loyal and committed to helping others while facing villains. These men care deeply for the women they love, but they often feel unworthy of love. Each man is surprised to find his soulmate, which brings joy and new challenges.

When one of their friends is in danger, the whole group comes together. This shows their strong bond as they fight against threats. The story is full of exciting action, intense chemistry between characters, and gripping tension, all within a plot filled with intrigue and drama.

I enjoy rereading this series and appreciate each emotional twist and turn.

3.5 ⭐

It's the same formula with the first three books. 🫣

We've got this broody, stoic hero who's still dealing with the ghosts from his time in the Navy. Someone who doesn't have the time for relationships or anything close to it, who doesn't let other people in so easily, and who isn't really living but just going through the motions of life.

Then we have this heroine who finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, and she ends up overhearing parts of a conversation that don’t even make any sense to her.

Lastly a villain who’s not willing to take any risks with the heroine. He decides to put a hit out on her to keep his secrets safe.

Hollis is a famous actress who’s decided to take a break from her career. It seems like a lot of unfortunate events have been piling up ever since she accidentally discovered something she wasn’t meant to find out.

Then there's Sawyer, the sheriff of the town in which she was staying. They first crossed paths when the fire alarm just wouldn't quit going off at her temporary apartment, and he decided to go check things out. Since then, I guess they can't stop navigating towards each other.

Before they realized it, things began unfolding for Hollis once more, and Sawyer was right there with her to see it all through to the end.

Like I said, this has the same formula as the prior books, and that includes the instant attraction between the MCs. This is very much an insta-lust turned love in a span of less than two weeks, give or take.

Ngl, I didn't sense any emotional connection between them, but maybe that's because their relationship moved too quickly. But I guess, when you know, you know, right? On a brighter side, I think the sexual tension is obviously there.

Another positive note, I really liked that the FMCs in each book were clever and not overly stubborn. They know how to listen and don’t act like they know better than the MMCs. I found it admirable that they didn't cause trouble and instead made an effort to assist as much as they could.

There were some things that didn't even make sense to me, but I'm going to look past them because I really want to get invested in the suspense and romance between Sawyer and Hollis. This is not a bad read, imo, it just felt like something I've read again and again, so the predictability took away a bit of the fun. 🤷‍♀️

Book info:
- Sheriff x Actress
- Small town romance
- Insta-lust then love
- Strangers to lovers
- Forced proximity (neighbors)
- Romantic suspense
- No cheating, OM/OW, separation
- No V
- HFN (engaged)
- Bonus epilogue (thru newsletter, their wedding day)

PS. A new character has been introduced, Parker, and he has his own ghosts too. And I'm looking forward to his book. 🤭

PPS: I think this author's favorite MMC is Vander Norcross. He's always present in her books, and he seems like the most badass hero she has. I haven't read his book yet, so I wouldn't know.

Rating: 3.5⭐️
Narration: 5⭐️
Spice: 1.5🌶

Audiobooks Review: Sebastian York and Emma Wilder were great as Sawyer and Hollie in this dual narration. They managed to portray these characters really well and also kept me invested in the story. As someone who enjoys audiobooks, I'd recommend this.

This is the fourth book in the series, and I was looking forward to reading it after Sawyer's cameo in the previous book. However, this one didn't meet my expectations. Although the plot was interesting enough, it still wasn't all that clear how the bad guy was actually the bad guy.

Sawyer is a former Navy SEAL who then became a part of the Ghost Ops before he retired and moved to Maui and now works as a deputy sheriff. But even after all that time away, he still feels restless, staying up all night, haunted by his past life—his regrets, his guilt, and his failures. When he gets a call about a fire alarm going off at a friend's property on one such night, the last thing Sawyer expects is to run into award-winning Hollywood actress Hollis Stanton.

Hollis Stanton, or Hollie, feels like she's losing her mind. After stumbling upon a conversation she's pretty sure she wasn't supposed to hear, she starts to feel like something is off. Her paranoia only grows when she's almost run off the road one day, which is why she decides to go into hiding until she can figure out her next move and reach Maui. When the strange occurrences only seem to follow Hollie to Maui, she confides in Sawyer, who vows to find the man behind the attacks and keep her safe.
~
~
~
Hollis had worked hard to reach where she was today, determined to not be defined by the hand life had dealt her, and was now one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood. But despite achieving all that success, she still felt alone. Where everyone saw her for her fame and connections and not who she was underneath it all. The first person to really see her for her was Sawyer, which heals something in her.

Sawyer has seen too much and feels like he's too damaged and broken to ever let love into his life. He's convinced that he has nothing to offer anyone, let alone someone like Hollis Stanton. He's attracted to her but doesn't have any wrong notions about someone like her choosing him. But as they spend more time getting to know each other and trying to figure out the motives behind the attacks on Hollie, things shift between them, which gives him hope.

Things initially start off with them acting on their attraction towards each other, but when things take a much more dangerous turn with the threat on Hollie's life, it then becomes a race against finding out a way to catch the person responsible while ensuring Hollie's safety. Along the way, their feelings for each other continue to grow.

The romance between Hollie and Sawyer felt more like insta-lust than anything else, and I was truly not convinced that these two fell so head over heels in love with each other after only knowing each other for a couple of days. Also, the way their conflicts of not being able to be together due to their respective careers got resolved was a little too convenient. The spice was decent, and I did enjoy it even if I wasn't too convinced with the romance part of things.

I was happy to see Vander once again and his involvement in helping Sawyer and Hollie. Which also brings me to Parker, whose intro and role have left me invested in reading his book.

Series: Unbroken Heroes #4
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

When Oscar-winning actress Hollis Stanton realizes someone is after her, she escapes to Maui to lay low. What she doesn’t expect is the handsome and muscular deputy sheriff next door or that she is seriously attracted to him.

This was an enjoyable romantic suspense story. Hollis was a talented and determined woman who just wanted to feel peace again. She goes to Maui in the hold of decompressing and hopefully letting things die down in LA. I liked Hollis. She was a hard worker who is realizing she is tired and burnt out but still has passion for her job. Meeting Sawyer and being stalked makes her reevaluate what she wants and eventually find a healthier life/work balance.

Sawyer is a former Ghost Ops and still struggling with the aftereffects of being a soldier. He barely sleeps and has survivor's guilt. He finds some peace in Maui, especially with his cousin’s large family looking after him. After meeting Hollis, he finds himself with a different outlook on life and actually hopeful for his future, whereas before he was more just going through the motions.

Hollis and Sawyer had a really wonderful relationship that healed both of them in different ways. I really loved how they fell for each other as they dodged danger and brought down their enemies. This was just a really great romance with some great characters. Also I loved that we got to see more of Vander and the Sentinel Security guys since they end up helping with this case.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one and look forward to reading the next book. Parker seems like an interesting and damaged soldier who needs love and I can’t wait to learn more about him.

TW: PTSD and nightmares; death of family members mentioned (one by drug overdose); attempted drowning; gun and knife violence; toxic mother mentioned; mentioned of torture, mass death, and death of a friend during military service;

I borrowed The Hero She Deserves ~ Unbroken Heroes ~ Book 4, by Anna Hackett, author from the Kindle Unlimited Program on Amazon.

Deputy Sheriff Sawyer Lane on Maui and top actress Hollis Stanton met when she had a fire in her coffee maker in the house she borrowed to get away from the threat to her life after she heard a part of a conversation at a Hollywood party.

After several close calls, she has come to Maui to hide. She keeps getting feelings that she is being watched, then she is attacked on the beach and a guy in a wet suit tires to drown her, Sawyer comes to the rescue. They find out that the man she heard at the party has put out a contract to have her killed. Sawyer keeps her hidden with the help of Parks, one of his military buddies. Vander helps them get away to San Francisco and even in the safe house but the killers still came after them. Sawyer and Parks kept her safe. Vander's crew came to the rescue, the FBI arrived for the Russians and they ended up together in Maui. That is only part of this action packed adventure and love story where Sawyer with Hillis, where she helped him find some peace and she found a guy that cared for her not that she was famous. End of great series.

Another dose of pure escapism both for the female protagonist and indeed the reader ! Hollis is an Oscar winning actress who inadvertently overheard a conversation that perplexed her and yet is it possible that because of it strange things start happening ? Leaving LA behind Hollis goes on retreat to Maui where she quickly meets Sawyer aka deputy hottie ! Turns out Hollis wasn't imagining things and danger has found her in paradise ! Luckily Sawyer is there but things escalate meaning he needs to call on his Seals skills and of course an old comrade or two .
This will appeal to those who enjoy romance with a little danger thrown in. The couple both have heavy loads to carry and their relationship helps them heal particularly Sawyer. If blunt I didn't particularly believe in the bad guy although the story allowed Sawyer to step up and be a complete bad acc ! Fans of this author will enjoy the cameo appearances here and there is a character introduced who will obviously get his own book. I particularly enjoyed reading about Sawyers matchmaking associate and the supporting island characters were truly fun to read about. As I initially stated this is escapism and very easy to read.
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Hollis, dream was to become an actress, she may have never had the support of her mother but she followed her dreams and became one of Hollywood's famous actresses. During a party, Hollis accidentally listens to a conversation that ends up affecting her in the worst way possible which leads to her hiding out in Maui, Hawaii.

Sawyer, deputy sheriff of Maui and former Ghost Ops. He has shadows and due to this he doesn't want any relationships. He likes the simple life his created for himself on Maui. But one incident with the famous Hollywood actress changes his life drastically.

Sawyer and Hollis's book was amazing. I loved the suspense weaved in, and the relationship between the main characters developed so nicely 🩷

Can't wait to read Parks book 🤍

Wow! Anna Hackett has another winner with this one! I loved Sawyer and Hollis's story! I don't think I will ever get sick of her brand of strong independent FMCs and protector MMCs.

Sawyer's instincts were spot on when he noticed that Hollis was in trouble. I loved that we see more of Vander Norcross in this book tying the author's world together.

Another great read from Anna! This book kicks off with a bang of sorts when Hollis sets her coffee machine on fire and Deputy Sheriff Sawyer Lane comes to her rescue.

Hollis is an award winning actress and when overhears something she was not supposed to, she heads to Maui to be out of the spotlight for a little while. Sawyer picks up pretty quickly that Hollis is hiding from something and of course, that something finds her and turns both her and Sawyer’s lives into a rollercoaster of suspense, action and drama, and of course a good dose of spice.

I love Anna’s writing and how you are kept in suspense throughout the book. You almost never see the ending coming, although you keep guessing the whole time how everything might play out.

And she absolutely does. After all the fake heroes she’s played opposite in all of her movies, Oscar-winning actress Hollis Stanton deserves a real hero of her own just when she needs him the most.

Even if, at first, she’s not willing to admit that she needs anyone to keep her safe, or that Deputy Sheriff Sawyer Lane is the hero she’s been holding out for all along. For more than just the present danger.

(And yes, I invoked that earworm deliberately. If this story doesn’t make Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero” ring through your head, here’s the video to fix that. You’re welcome.)

One of the unfortunate things about information and cellphone cameras being available everywhere, all the time, is that a person can run but they literally cannot hide, at least not if they’re a movie star like Hollis Stanton.

Hawaii, like Alaska still is to some extent, used to be a place that was so far out there – far out in the Pacific Ocean – that once upon a time a person could run away from themselves and whatever demons were literally chasing them.

Of course, the demons that were only figuratively chasing them, the demons inside their own heads, came right along with them. After all, no matter where you go, there you are.

Hollis Stanton is being chased by very real demons. She overheard something she shouldn’t have at a party hosted by a shady Hollywood mogul, and then weird shit started happening around her. So she ran, to the house of a friend outside the tiny village of Paia, on Maui. She covered her tracks as best she could, but she’s a hot commodity and anyone who sees her instantly recognizes her.

Sawyer Lane, very much on the other hand, left the SEALs and Vander Norcross’ Ghost Ops team with a whole lot of demons. But Sawyer’s demons are inside him, and he brought them along with him to Paia.

The place, the job, the friends he’s made there are helping him lay those demons to rest, but it’s a long process that still gives him plenty of sleepless nights. Like all of the nights. Still.

At least until the fire alarm goes off in the ‘vacation home’ down the road, and his sometime neighbor calls Sawyer to ask him to go down and check it out. And finds himself checking out Hollis Stanton, ALL of Hollis Stanton, standing on a teetering chair in just a slipping towel trying her damndest to shut the damn thing off.

It’s already too late for her coffee maker. And it’s too late for Sawyer Lane – and Hollis, too – they just don’t know it yet. And might not survive the conflagration to come.

Escape Rating B: Just like the story reminded me of “Holding Out for a Hero”, the hero in the story reminds Hollis Stanton of the hero of the Jack Reacher TV series. The book’s cover does a damn good job of leading the reader in that same direction, although your reading and TV viewing mileage may both vary.

One of the things that I’ve loved about all the entries in the Unbroken Heroes so far, The Hero She Needs, The Hero She Wants and The Hero She Craves (and if you’re sensing a theme here you’re right) is that the heroines get their rescue parties started all by themselves. Not that the heroes don’t help a LOT, but the women of this series have all been active – and effective – participants in everything that happens around them.

Hollis, in spite of her timely escape to Maui, has a bigger set of blinders on than the others. Or she’s a bit more naive or has been just a shade too overprotected and oversheltered as a Hollywood star – in spite of her hard-knock start in life.

She keeps thinking she’s escaped when it’s clear that she hasn’t. To the point where I wanted to hit her with a clue-by-four before the story did it for me.

OTOH, Sawyer fit right in with the rest of Vander Norcross’ former Ghost Ops. Which reminds me, for such a badass, Vander (his book is The Powerbroker) is one hell of a mother hen. And seems to have always been one. It’s a fascinating combination.

The interesting thing about this romance is that both Sawyer AND Hollis have serious cases of the “I’m not worthies” and yet, it works BECAUSE they both do. He has demons from his service – as all the men from the Ghost Ops team have unsurprisingly had so far. Her demons are old and familiar – also familial. Her mother STILL doesn’t appreciate, approve or understand – but is more than willing to make demands and milk her daughter for money at the drop of a hat.

Like the rest of the Unbroken Heroes series, The Hero She Deserves is a story where the hero and the heroine rescue each other from demons that they initially weren’t willing to even admit that they couldn’t handle themselves.

That justice was finally served and evil got its just desserts turned out to be the icing on an excellent reading cake, as have been all the books in this series, and absolutely the author’s work in general.

There’s one more Ghost Ops member left for Vander Norcross to mother hen into his happy ever after, and we’ll get that story early next year. It looks like this last entry in the series, The Hero She Loves, will be set in Alaska, so I’m especially looking forward to it!

When A list actress Hollis Stanton overhears something she shouldn't have, she heads to Maui to get away. Right away she meets gorgeous Deputy Sawyer Lane when she sets off the smoke alarm in the house where she's staying. It's attraction at first sight, but neither really makes a move. After all, Sawyer has found a home and community in Maui and still has demons from his time in the military, and Hollis is only in Maui temporarily. But when the person who came after Hollis in Hollywood follows her to his island paradise, Sawyer takes it upon himself to keep her safe, and just may end up giving her his heart in the process.

Being in close proximity under heightened danger became the catalyst of healing for Sawyer and Hollis. He was able finally sleep through the night with the calming presence of Hollis near him. And she found the peace, and the love she had always searched for. There are cameos by Vander and co. and a new character intro for Park, who has me very impatient for his story *hint hint!* I'm not sure which Unbroken Hero is next to fall in love, but I can't wait to find out!

Disclaimer
I voluntarily read an e-ARC of this book, thanks to Anna Hackett and The Author Agency. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
"He curled over her body, holding her tight.
There was no noise, no pain, no guilt. Just Jenna.
In that moment, he found something he’d never found before.
Peace."

📖 My View:
Okay, so this book is a total banger! Jenna is this fierce, independent woman who’s been through a lot but still stands tall. Enter Park, the sweetest, most protective MMC ever. He’s part of the badass Ghost Ops team, and when Jenna becomes the target of a serial killer, he’s all in to protect her—heart and soul.
The story is fast-paced and keeps you hooked. Sure, the plot’s pretty straightforward (killer on the loose, protect the girl, catch the bad guy), but it’s executed so well that you don’t even mind. Plus, the romance? Hot, fast, and oh-so-swoony!

What I Loved:
💖 Communication goals
Jenna and Park’s relationship is everything. They didn’t just vibe physically (though hello, the chemistry was 🔥); they actually talked. About their pasts, fears, insecurities—everything. It made their connection feel so real and mature.
💖 Trust like no other
The way these two trusted each other, no questions asked, was so refreshing. No silly misunderstandings, no unnecessary drama—just pure loyalty and faith in each other. Loved it!
💖 Ghost Ops brotherhood
Park’s team added so much warmth and humor to the story. Their banter, loyalty, and the way they had each other’s backs? Absolute chef’s kiss. Vander, especially, was such a vibe—always nudging Park in the right direction and being the ultimate supportive bestie.
💖 Fast-burn romance that WORKS
Insta-lust can sometimes feel forced, but not here. Jenna and Park’s connection was instant but still believable. It wasn’t just about the heat (though there was plenty of that); it had emotional depth too.

Why 4.5 starts?
The book shines because of the emotional depth and trust between the leads. Jenna and Park aren’t just a hot couple; they’re partners in every sense. Their open communication, unwavering support, and undeniable chemistry elevate this from a good thriller to an unforgettable romantic adventure. The action-packed scenes and the strong sense of camaraderie within the Ghost Ops team add layers of excitement and warmth.
The only reason it’s not a full 5 stars is that some side characters felt underdeveloped, and the plot was a bit predictable. But honestly? The main couple and the heart-pounding action more than make up for it!
Will I Continue the Series?
Oh, absolutely! 🥳 Even though the side characters felt a bit underused here, I can’t wait to dive into their stories. Anna Hackett’s writing has me hooked, and I’m dying to know more about the Ghost Ops team. Vander, especially, better get his own book soon!

Recommendation:
If you’re into romantic thrillers that balance heart-pounding action with swoon-worthy romance, The Hero She Loves is a must-read. Jenna is a total badass—smart, strong, and fiercely independent. Park? He’s the kind of MMC you’ll wish was real: sweet, protective, and completely smitten with Jenna.
The fast-burn romance is steamy but never feels rushed, and their emotional connection is the real highlight. Anna Hackett nails the balance between romance and suspense, creating a story that keeps you flipping pages late into the night.
For Fans Of:
Strong, independent heroines
Sweet but protective heroes
Fast-paced action and suspense
Found family vibes and loyal friendships
You’ll also love this book, where love blooms amidst danger.

Oh Anna.

I'm a long, long time fan. Her earliest series, The Hell Squad, was my entry into her writing. Then she wrote Galactic Gladiators, another amazing, fun, action-packed series with a ton of smoking hot $ex. At some point, she moved away from sci-fi romance and into romantic suspense. And this is really where she lost me.

Most of her romantic suspense series are flat, frustrating stories with insta love, a little action, so-so $ex, and a whole lot of TSTL behaviors. Sadly, this book is a continuation down that same road.

The female and male leads both have interesting back stories and strong characters. But I didn't buy their romance at all. The $ex should have been hot, with some fun dirty talk, but there just wasn't a connection there. It felt like someone cut out all the adjectives, particularly from the male lead. If this was an attempt to make him seem more alpha, I feel that it failed. He just came off distant, which is why it's hard to believe the romance.

And it's so clear that these stories are written to a template. We get the meet/cute, the woman in distress, the forced proximity, a good bit of TSTL stuff, the 3/4 super bad dangerous scene, then the shmaltzy ending. In several scenes, the male lead, who was supposed to be the sheriff, didn't have a gun. This was true even after it was clear the female lead was in serious danger. What? At least twice, he didn't even try to go after the bad guy after yet another attack because he "didn't want to leave her alone." Holy cow!

I feel guilty leaving bad reviews for this author. I've loved her early work so much and used to auto buy anything she wrote. These flat, kinda boring stories continue to have frustrating escapes by bad guys who seem almost invincible until the very end. They are peopled with unconnected leads who perform stupid acts just to further the story. Worst of all, this story involved Vander Norcross, king of all alphas, a guy who is seriously almost immortal. And yet, somehow, these bad guys manage to cut the power to his super secret headquarters, cut the internet, the phones, cameras, etc. Vander Norcross-the guy who has outsmarted the KGB, the CIA, MI6, every terrorist organization known, and all the brilliant criminal minds. Didn't know how to make sure his headquarters couldn't be impacted? Seriously?

This is a new series, but it doesn't seem to be going in any new direction. Same stuff, different day. I'm not seeing any improvement with the romantic suspense stuff.

I am not sure that there could be a more beautiful backdrop to fall in love than Hawaii. Unfortunately, Hollywood’s hottest actress, Hollis Stanton, is not there just to soak in the scenery and relax; there is someone after her and she needs to get out of Hollywood fast! While from the outside it appears that Hollis has everything going for her- she is really lonely. Having relationships in Hollywood is difficult and she has a complicated relationship with her family. So when she lands in Maui, Hawaii is really set on just relaxing and laying low until whoever is after her moves on. That is until Deputy Sheriff Sawyer Lane comes into her life!
Deputy Sheriff Sawyer Lane is happy- he has a great life in paradise. He gets to do what he loves in the most beautiful of places. After being out of the military he is finally settled and life is good. But his friends keep on him about finding someone- Sawyer is pretty reluctant and his military past still haunts him. But when the most beautiful Hollywood actress lands basically in his backyard he cannot stay away. Sawyer is immediately drawn to Hollis and wants nothing more than to keep her safe.
When Sawyer comes to Hollis’ rescue in the most hilarious fashion they have an immediate connection- and I love that they really didn’t fight it. These two lit the sheets on fire and the dirty talking- YES PLEASE!!!! One of the things I love most about Anna Hackett’s books is how fast paced they are- you really get immersed in the book and never want to put it down! Hackett effortlessly moves the storyline along while building the connection and relationship with the characters, and there is always a lot of action and running from the bad guys; which I love! Anna Hackett has quickly become one of my favorite romantic suspense authors! Her stoic heroes are always so alpha and protective, where her heroines are fierce and dynamic! I have especially loved this series as we get peaks into previous characters' lives and we never know where Anna is going to take us next! If you enjoy a romantic suspense book that is seriously steamy with a heavy dose of action this book and series is a must read for you!

An overall decent read that could have been worse but also could have been better! I’ve read a few of Anna Hackett’s books at this point and I’m just not sure if her writing style is for me.

Sawyer (H) meets Oscar winning actress Hollis (h) under some… interesting circumstances. They begin a holiday fling, but when Hollis’ life is in danger, she learns that Sawyer is much more than just a typical Deputy Sheriff.

I liked the Hawaiian backdrop and some of the inclusions about this, but ultimately felt that the author only engaged with Hawaiian/Polynesian culture in a very surface level, “let’s be inclusive” kind of way. That’s probably just me being picky, but why pick a location with such rich history and culture for a novel and then not utilise it in any meaningful way?

Sawyer and Hollis were decent main characters, both with enough angst in their past to create some engaging moments. However, something about their romance and this book in general just didn’t do it for me. The sex scenes were kind of mechanical, and I just didn’t feel any real chemistry between the mains. They were saying all the right things but the connection and tension and hotness just wasn’t there for me. It felt like the author had certain plot points she wanted to hit and everything in between was just mediocre filler. In addition, some of the dialogue in this was astoundingly cheesy, which did not help. I actually found myself physically cringing and laughing at the absurdity of some of the lines in this.

So, I know it seems like I hated this, but I didn’t. It was still an okay read and I never felt like DNF’ing. I just wanted more from it I guess 🤷🏼‍♀️ I would recommend others give this a try and see if it’s more their style though.

Safety:
No virgins. H had been celibate for (3?) years, since getting out of military. No recent history for h other than it had been a while.
No ow or om drama.

Hiding out in Hawaii seemed like the best plan to Hollis. She overheard something she shouldn't have and now instead of call sheets and scripts, she's dodging hoodlums and bullets!

Meeting her hunky new neighbour is one thing, but whilst almost naked and dealing with a flaming coffee machine is another! Sawyer has seen and done it all as a Ghost ops veteran. He's still in touch with most of his team, including one Vander Norcross, but he's liking the solitude of Maui. But with Hollis in the sights of a hit team, he's on bodyguard duty for the forseeable.

Hollis thought she was so crafty with her disguises but everyone saw through them, lol. They still kept her secrets though and I think she realises that most people just see her as a regular person. She's passionate about what she does and doesn't want to compromise her career for love. She's made a life for herself, a world away from her poor childhood but she hasn't become self-entitles or b*tchy with her success.

Sawyer is dealing with PTSD, insomnia and not a small amount of survivor's guilt. The tranquillity of the island and a big, boisterous, meddling, found family is also good for his soul. His skills aren't rusty though and I loved the way he kept Hollis safe but still made time to let her have some freedom and choices.

The romance is fast and intense but so are the circumstances. Getting to meet a few familiar faces was a complete bonus - I love a crossover! I thought the suspense elements tied up neatly and I got satisfaction when the big bad got their comeuppance.

I'm really interested in learning more about Parker and I'm hoping he gets a chance at love soon!

Book Review: The Hero She Deserves by: Anna Hackett

When I want a romantic suspense story I turn to Anna Hackett!!! She’s the queen so she’s my pick for this week’s Trope Tuesday!

I love her stories and I have loved this series. Sawyer is our MC and I’m so glad to see him staring in this book along side our FMC who is an Oscar winning actress Hollis who’s on the run from a Russian movie producer. When she accidentally overhears things she shouldn’t she is in fear for her life when a hit is put out on her. What she wasn’t expecting when she goes to Maui to hide out is the very strong and sexy deputy neighbor. And sparks are flying all around for these two!

This is the perfect romantic suspense book! I loved both the characters growing up Hollis realizing work isn’t everything or enough and Sawyer realizing that he doesn’t have to be scared to let someone in it won’t automatically mean you’ll lose them.

When the danger chasing Hollis makes it was to Hawaii Sawyer re embodies his former Ghost Ops ways and reaches out for help. I loved that we got flashes of the others in this story!!

I loved how they healed each other and supported one another! Not only was there major chemistry but there was a deeper connection between them and they truly complimented each other!

I love these books can’t wait for Parks story!!!

✨ARC Review✨

I am no stranger to Anna Hackett's books, her writing was what got me into romantic suspense and Military Romance and this new series is an excellent add-on/spin-off to the Norcross series this series follows all of Vander's ex-ghost ops buddies.

You have Sawyer Lane, whom we met last time in book 3. He is the local sheriff for Pia in Hawaii. Sawyer is a former seal and ghost ops member who recently got out of the military. To save himself from the nightmares and pain, he takes his cousin's offer to move and work in Hawaii.

Hollis Stanton is an Oscar-winning actress on the run. You have to love an awkward meet-cute where she meets deputy Sheriff Sawyer Lane, who comes to check on a suspicious fire alarm when he accidentally sees her naked after her towel drops.

The Plot for this book was great, we got to see the old Norcross gang and the trouble that is following Hollis is probably my favourite plot besides Reath and Frankies story in TAKE (Fury Brothers' book #4)

The spice was a little lacking but I felt like the storyline made up for it, Super excited to meet more of the ghost ops guys, especially the new guy ;)

Thank you to the Author Agency and Anna Hackett for the opportunity to review The Hero She Deserves.

Plot: 4/5
Spice: 2.5/5
Overall: 4/5

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙤 𝙎𝙝𝙚 𝘿𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙨 by 𝘼𝙣𝙣𝙖 𝙃𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙩 is the fourth book in the 𝙐𝙣𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙚𝙣 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙚𝙨 series and is the story between Deputy Sheriff Sawyer Lane and Oscar-winning actress Hollis Stanton.

Hollis is hiding out on Maui after discovering her life is in danger, which is where she meets Sawyer, a former Navy Seal struggling with the aftermath of life as a Ghost Ops soldier.

I love how fast paced this book was as the story moved along quickly and easily. The romance also happened quickly as Hollis and Sawyer had an immediate connection but they spent time getting to know each other and building on their friendship, despite being on the run from paid assassins.

While Sawyer took on the self appointed role as protector to Hollis she was also protective of him and definitely wasn’t a pushover, which I loved!

I really enjoyed this fast paced romantic suspense story and I read it as fast as I could because I needed to know what would happen next.

The main characters were likeable and showed growth throughout the book and the side characters added depth to the storyline. It was also good to see a few familiar faces pop up in the story.

Can we have Parker’s story next, please!

- small town Sheriff

FIERY, PASSIONATE ROMANTIC SUSPENSE-LOTS OF ACTION

The Hero She Deserves is a fast-paced read the kept me craving to learn what happens next. Admirable engaging characters spring to life with humorous moments, loads of action, heart-racing suspense, stormy emotions, life-threatening events, fun times, picturesque scene descriptions, fiery, passionate romance and an exciting, happy forever.

Story takes place in Maui, Hawaii where beautiful sunsets leave you breathless and pristine beaches with sparkling blue water lures you in. Hollis Stanton, Hollywood’s most wanted Oscar-winning actress, is in Maui running from a man who wants to harm her. She’s a beauty with striking red hair, bright blue eyes, caring, smart and courageous in this read. Maui County’s hunky Deputy Sheriff Sawyer Lane cherishes his job being away from Ghost Ops. He’s a quick-witted alpha protector with mesmerizing hazel eyes. Both have a love for coffee: their first meet is comical. They face many obstacles before reaching their happy forever.

Fantastic romantic suspense storyline. The author weaves a believable romance amongst horrific danger. Backstories bring you closer to the characters and unconditional love between Sawyer and Hollis shines in this read they make each other happy. Loved this read and reviewed a prerelease copy.

Finding Your Hero in Paradise
Deputy Sheriff Sawyer Lane is finally on safe soil after serving years in the military. He went from a Navy Seal into Ghost-ops, so Sawyer has seen the worst of the worst…some of those horrors keep him up at night. Coming to Hawaii and moving to Maui is helping his state of mind. Now, he has a new neighbor who is bringing his body back to life.
Hollis Stanton is an Oscar-winning actress hiding from a stalker, though not your usual stalker, more like a hitman. Hollis was in the wrong place at the wrong time and, the villain thinks, she heard too much. The first time Sawyer comes to Hollis’s aid, he is gobsmacked. The tiny towel around her naked body just fell to the floor. OMG! She is gorgeous. (Hilarious scene)
Sawyer is there for her as protector and real friend, but wonderfully, Hollis is there for him, too. She is in deadly danger and is lucky to have a former Ghost op as her bodyguard but even Sawyer needs some help and who does he call? VANDER NORCROSS, that’s who!
This story has great characters, Vander, beautiful scenery in paradise, Vander, suspense and adventure, and Vander. Sawyer is pretty awesome too. I loved this story. Linda

Another great read from Anna! She does romantic suspense so well. I love me a gruff, troubled hero and Sawyer fits the bill. The cure for nightmares and insomnia? Why an A-lister Hollywood actress of course!

Their meet cute was utterly embarrassing, I would have died, but Sawyer handled it like a gentleman. Hollis is so down to earth despite her fame and the coffee addiction? Same girl. Same. Good thing Sawyer had that coffee house rec., or there’d be trouble brewing (you know, since no coffee brewing…). Well my husband thinks I’m funny!

But alas, there was trouble brewing, and Hollis was popular among more than just her fans. Sawyer had his hands full keeping himself and Hollis breathing, but with the help of friends who are in the booty kicking business, loved and life prevailed. And the path to that HEA was a pretty great read. There is always so much action and suspense in Anna’s books and that is why I love them so much. They are a great representation of the genre.

Brew a cup of coffee (try not to set your house on fire) and enjoy this fast paced, low angst, action packed romantic story that will be sure to make you smile.

“𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔, 𝑰’𝒍𝒍 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖.” - Sawyer

Hollis, one of Hollywoods hottest actress’, flees to Maui after an encounter that has her on edge. However, on her first night there, she finds herself having a run in with the Sheriff, fully naked.

Sawyer is a former Navy Seal and Ghost Ops, who is the Sheriff. After running into Hollis everywhere, he quickly learns this woman is awakening something that had been asleep for a long time and he would do anything to protect her.

Sawyer is the true definition of a swoon worthy book boyfriend. Even with his own internal battles, he still does everything to protect her. I loved Sawyers character because she was determined, strong, and independent. After a rough patch and constantly being in the lime-light, she still keeps her head high and pushes forward. I also loved how the characters of his friends were supportive and made each encounter feel so warm and welcoming.

This is a romantic suspense that was read in one sitting! I loved the chemistry from their first awkward encounter throughout the entire book. If you love a protective MMC, forced proximity, military hero, and romantic suspense, make sure you grab this book!

3.5* Yay! it’s brilliant! It’s exciting, sexy, and romantic. 🔥

I’ve got to be honest, I’d nearly given up on Anna Hackett. As her books have sadly not hit the mark lately but this WAS BRILLIANT! It’s exciting, we get Vander (YAY) the danger was exciting and the s*x was hot and sexy.

When actress Hollis overhears a conversation that puts her in danger, she goes to Hawaii to hide out. While she’s there she meets Sawyer who was in Vander’s ghost ops team. Sawyer is now in the police force in Hawaii. The danger has followed Hollis and they’re soon running for their lives, while having hot s*x and falling in love. Sawyer has severe ptsd and is only living a half life before he meets Hollis. Hollis really makes Sawyer enjoy his life more.

Vander makes an appearance as does the rest of Norcross. I’ve missed them in the other books in this series. One slight complaint or niggle. How many men were in Vander’s team? He has three at Norcross and this series it’s up 8 now. I thought teams were smaller? It’s only a slight niggle though. Otherwise I loved it.

It’s well written and I loved the romance between them. Sawyer was a brilliant character as was Hollis. Can’t wait for the next one now. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

An actress and a deputy meetcute over a smoke alarm!

Actress Hollis is hiding out on Maui at a friend’s cottage. Sawyer (one of Vander Norcross’ ghost ops teammates) is a local deputy sheriff. They meet when Hollis burns the coffee maker and can’t get the smoke detector to turn off.

When the trouble Hollis is hiding from finds her in Maui, Sawyer comes to her rescue. His fellow Ghost Ops teammate is sent to help him by Vander. A chase around Maui and then San Fransisco ensues before the bad guy is finally caught!

This was a fun read. Hollis is a kick a$$ heroine who is as un-Hollywood as you can be. She stays strong under life threatening situations. (FRYING PAN!!!) A perfect match for our tough deputy. Sawyer has his ghosts and moved to Maui to be near family who could help pull him back into the land of the living. He never thought he would fall in love.

I love this series. It ties into the Norcross Security world, but features warriors who don’t feel like they deserve a HEA after what they have seen and done in their Ghost Ops time. Set in different areas of the USA, I highly recommend you read the series! And Hollis and Sawyer is a wonderful addition! 12/10 recommend!

HOO-BOY. Hollis and Sawyer have more sparks than they almost know what to do with. Just kidding, Sawyer knows what to do with them and he's more than happy to show Hollis everything and anything he can.

But before we get to that point, Sawyer and Hollis have to MEET. And by that I mean he finds her nekkid trying to get the smoke alarm to stop going off. AS ONE DOES. While Sawyer definitely likes what he sees in that first meeting, it's her kindness and intelligence that reels him in. Also, his fiercely protective streak is activated once he realizes she's laying low because she thinks she's being stalked. Sort of. It's complicated.

On Hollis's end, she's running on fumes and worries that no one will believe her when she tells them about what she's dealing with. But Sawyer does believe her and his strength and competence (plus how he doesn't treat her like a superstar) ticks all her boxes and it isn't long before these two are kicking their relationship up a notch.

A little danger, a superstar trying to be incognito, a visit by some of the Norcross crew, a man who knows a good thing when he meets her, and a lady who finds her perfect match while on the run. *thumbs up*

"I didn't want to be with anyone until you."

Hollis, an Oscar-winner actress, is on the run to hide as she thinks someone's out to get her. She stayed in a little cottage in Maui where she met the deputy, Sawyer Lane. As their relationship developed, the people after Hollis are making moves, risking both of their lives.

I love me some romantic suspense book and this delivered it. It's a novella so I pretty read this in one-sitting and I literally had to put down the book several times because it gave me palpitations.

Great thing about this book was they were both opening up about themselves before jumping in bed. I did rolled my eyes in some spicy scenes (a me-problem), but it doesn't really take away anything from the story. I love how they both felt seen with one another and protective just as much.

I am intrigued by Sawyer's group of friends and I read this first even though it's book 4 in the series but I can follow along well.

I guess it's time for me to move to a small town so someone's fall in love with me.

Brb, while I download the rest of the series because all the plot sounded so good.
