Schon zu Schulzeiten veröffentlichte er seine Comics in selbstverlegten Fanzines und Anthologien und begann nach dem Abitur ein Grafikdesign-Studium an der Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee, wo er mit anderen Gleichgesinnten die Comicgruppe Monogatari gründete.
Während des Studiums entstand das erste längere Album “Strandsafari” (2002 bei Schwarzer Turm) mit Mawils Alter Ego, einem bebrillten Hasen. Ein Jahr später diplomierte er mit “Wir können ja Freunde bleiben”, einer tragikomischen autobiografischen Erzählung über Mädchengeschichten, mit dem er 2003 zu Reprodukt wechselte. Seitdem pendelt Mawil ständig zwischen beiden Genres.
Seine nachfolgenden Bücher “Die Band” (2004), “Das große Supa-Hasi-Album” (2005), “Meister Lampe” (2006) und “Action Sorgenkind” (2007) erschienen in den USA, England, Spanien, Frankreich, Polen und Tschechien, seine Kurzgeschichten in Magazinen wie “Strapazin”, “Stripburger”, “Renate” und “Moga Mobo”.
Mawil gibt Workshops, signiert und stellt auf den einschlägigen internationalen Comicfestivals aus und zeichnet monatlich einen grossformatigen Comic für die Sonntagsbeilage des Berliner “Tagesspiegels”. Und wenn dann noch Zeit bleibt, arbeitet er im BerlinComix-Atelier, das er sich mit den Kollegen Andreas Michalke, Reinhard Kleist, Naomi Fearn und Fil teilt, an einem neuen Buch. Wer eine bitterernste grafische Geschichte mit wirklichen Tiefgang über die ausklingende DDR erwartet, sollte es erwägen, die Hände von diesem Buch zu lassen oder einfach seine Erwartungshaltung ändern. Ich empfehle Letzteres. Denn "Kinderland" sprüht vor Energie, Humor und Spitzfindigkeiten. Auf beinahe jeder Seite wurde ich in meine eigene Schulzeit in den 80ern zurückkatapultiert, betrachtete vergnügt die Zeichnungen oder lachte über typisches Vokabular und Verhaltensweisen in jener Zeit. Protagonist Mirco Watzke, auch als Streber, Heulsuse und Petze betitelt, stolpert von einem Problem ins nächste und so darf der Leser ihn unter anderem auf eine Klassenfahrt und bei seiner Erfahrensreise, ein passabler Tischtennisspieler zu werden, begleiten. Nebenbei versucht er aus dem Abseits der Klasse zu treten und endlich seine verletztenden Spitznamen von sich zu schütteln.
Sämtliche Figuren sind fesselnd skizziert, besonders die LehrerInnen, allen voran die Russischlehrerin und Pionierleiterin Frau Kranz, die offenbar gar nicht so "rot" ist, wie alle glauben. Natürlich darf auch eine charismatische Gruppenratsvorsitzende in Mircos Klasse nicht fehlen, die Frau Kranz tatkräftig bei der Pionierarbeit unterstützt und ganz zufällig Angela Werkel heißt. Alle Akteure sind also richtig fetzige Typen, die auf der letzten Doppelseite unter der Überschrift "Das Periodensystem der Elemente" nochmals grafisch dargestellt sind (köstlich!!!).
Es sind die Liebe zum Detail und der Witz, die in dieser Geschichte stecken, die es mir so angetan haben. Sei es das Porträt Erich Honeckers, das in einem Zimmer hängt, das Bild Michail Gorbatschows auf einer Zeitung, der Pioniergruß zum Unterrichtsbeginn und Fahnenappell, das Sammeln von Altstoff, die Mittagessensausgabe mit "Toter Oma", der heranbrausende Ikarus-Bus, die heimlichen politischen Gespräche der Erwachsenen in der Stube beim Genuss von Erdnussflips, das begeisterte Hören von Depeche Mode im Hintergrund, der Tausch von im Handel nicht erhältlicher Ware und so weiter und so weiter. Mich hat schon lange nicht mehr ein Buch derart zum Lachen gebracht und es wird nicht das erste bzw. letzte Mal gewesen sein, dass ich es betrachtet und gelesen habe.

The story of a group of kids at an East Berlin school in the year before the wall came down. Most of this was about the kids' obsession with ping-pong surprisingly. I wish the story had done more to explain the things that were unique about going to school in East Germany instead of just mentioning them commonplace as if the reader would have an understanding of what was being referred to. The art is absolutely terrible.

Kad autori apciemo Rīgu, kā saka, nevar neiet.
Tā nu Mavila vizītes iedvesmota, pa darba pauzītēm izlasīju šo bilžīgo stāstu, lai gan jāsaka, šis īsti nebija manā lasāmo grāmatu sarakstā.
Vienīgais komikss, kurš uz mūžīgiem laikiem paliks manā sirdī, ir Sāga, vismaz sākuma daļas, un patiesībā komikss kā žanrs man nevisai patīk - es vai nu lasu grāmatu, vai skatos filmu. Tas - pa vidu - mani mulsina. Skrienu pāri bildēm un meklēju tekstu, lai ātrāk tiktu līdzi stāstam.
Nezinu, kurā vecumā mans bērns varētu lasīt šo grāmatu, skaidrs, ka ne pavisam tuvā nākotnē (3 gadi), bet spriežot pēc bērnu jautājumiem, kas nāca no publikas šodien grāmatas atvēršanas pasākumā, šī ir laba grāmata jautājumiem un izziņai. Bet ne tikai par vēsturi un politiku, bet bērni jautāja, kāpēc šajā grāmatā nav nodaļu. Tātad, ko mācīt te būtu arī par formu.
Pēdējā laikā literatūras darbos man trūkst struktūras un dramaturģijas (varbūt tāpēc, ka es visu laiku lasu trešu), bet arī gana nopietnas grāmatas šķiet padevušās autora ego priekšā, kuri uzskata, ka viņš viens ir visu panākumu atslēga, un visi klasiskie stāstniecības paņēmieni ir metami laukā pa logu.
Komiksā, tāpat kā kino, bez zināmiem likumiem nevar iztikt, un bija forši klausīties, kā autors rada un kādā darba stadijā iet konsultēties pie kinematogrāfistiem, un to tiešām var just, lasot, skatot bildes, te ir vairākas izcilas "montāžas" vietas.
Kinderlades stāstam ir gan struktūra, gan emocionālie slāņi, vēstures konteksts, kas aktuāls ne tikai Vācijas mantiniekiem, bet pāri visām šīm svarīgajām lietām, tas ir sirsnīgs pieaugšanas stāsts, par bērnību, par pinpongu, par draudzību.
Tulkotāja Ieva Lešinska atzina, ka izaicinājums ir bijis atrast latviskus izsauksmes vārdus, kuri nebūtu nākuši no angļu mēles, un kuri būtu vēsturiski iederīgi, tāpat kā attiecīgā vēstures posma slengs. Pēc šāda komentāra man gribas grāmatu pārlapot vēlreiz.
Un vispār, ja es strādātu skolā, nopirktu kādus 30 eks, tā lai pietiek veselai klasei, un lasītu vēstures stundās, lasītu vizuālās mākslas nodarbībās, lasītu latviešu valodas stundās, un mēģinātu risināt tulkojuma rēbusus, lasītu literatūras stundās un analizētu žanra īpatnības, un vēl, un vēl....

Попри те, що написано в анотації, "Кіндерланд" - це історія про дитинство, ностальгія, згадка про часи, які давно минули.
"Кіндерланд" розповідає про підлітка Мірко, маминого хлопчика, який боїться всього на світі, його однокласників та друга-бунтаря Торстена. Всі ці підлітки вчаться, мають свої проблеми та перемоги, певні стосунки між собою, спільні події, ризики та пригоди. Це все - події різні, але буденні та зрозумілі всім, хто колись ходив у школу, мав не улюблену та сувору вчительку, та боявся потрапити на очі місцевим хуліганам. Так-так, для нас цей мальопис теж зрозумілий! Різниця лиш в тому, що дія "Кіндерланду" відбувається у Східному Берліні 1989 року у переддень падіння Берлінської стіни.
А тенісні спаринги - це лише щось, що найбільше цікавить персонажів цієї графічної історії, хоча сюжет зовсім не крутиться навколо цього. Настільний теніс - це важливий елемент історії, але головним елементом є саме дитинство та юність, такі, якими їх знає автор.
Цей мальопис має просто фантастичний стиль малюнку - примітний, яскравий, харизматичний. У героїв є характер, і він добре зчитується та запам'ятовується, бо всі вони мають видатний вигляд. Окремий комплімент тлу на якому зі сторінки у сторінку живуть персонажі - він хоч і простий, проте містить багато великодок на тогочасну дійсність, що дуже цікаво досліджувати під час читання.
Мені "Кіндерланд" читався швидко та із задоволенням. Було смішно, іноді трошки сумно, й весь час дуже емпатично. Я рада, що купила та прочитала цей тайтл.
Була лише одна невелика проблема - формат українського видання, через який не зламавши корінця, дочитати книгу неможливо. Хоча сам папір та фарба - чудово сприймаються очима.
Ну й загалом якось так виходить, що мені подобаються німецькі мальописи. Друкуйте ще)

Das hat mir viel Freude bereitet. Dabei hätte ich es am Anfang fast abgebrochen, da mir der Protagonist Mirco ("Mürgo") zunächst ziemlich auf die Nerven ging. Das wäre aber wirklich schade gewesen, denn dann hätte ich diese Zeitreise in meine Kindheit verpasst. Immer wieder entdeckte ich Details in den Panels, die mich verzückt aufschreien ließen, weil ich sie schon fast vergessen hatte. Der Pioniergruß, das Bild von Honecker im Klassenzimmer, der Milchdienst, das Sammeln von Altpapier, die damaligen Telespiele, das Aussehen der Bushaltestelle usw. Die Figuren sind liebevoll dargestellt - auch Mirco konnte mich letztlich noch packen - und so macht es Spaß deren Entwicklung zu verfolgen. Schön!

Ļoti precīzs laika un vides tēlojums.
1989. gads VDR ar visu, kas no tā izriet – pionieru pulciņu, prieku par iegādātu stacionāro telefonu un šoku, nonākot aiz mūra.
Patiks ne tikai pusaudžiem, bet arī tiem, kas vēl atceras “skaistos” padomju laikos.

This graphic novel, set in East Berlin just before the fall of the wall, is not about the wall at all. When the title says this is a story of what it is to be a child in East Berlin, that is really what it is about. The wall is almost an afterthought, so it is a bit misleading to have it on the cover.
It is really about Micro, who falls in with, if not a bad crowd, at least not a model student, and he is picked on, and beaten because of it.
Through it all, there is ping pong, and a LOT of the book is about the ping pong games the children play, ad nasium.
There is a great glossary in the back, the explains some of what is going on, such as the Pioneers (the political youth group) recycling for money, and the lack of Western goods.
So, just because it isn't quite what we were hoping for a story, because it is a completely different story than you are lead to believe, and because there is only so much ping pong anyone can take, I can't rate it much higher than I have.
Other than that, it is a good look into what was on young people's minds in 1989, when the wall came down.

(3,8 of 5 for a nice look into mundane life in the dusk of the one-party-rule in East Berlin)
The art - I liked it, a bit "children's comics" style, but it works well and the author knows how to work with the comics medium.
The story - I had little problem getting into it and it took me half the book, but alright, that end has a very nice atmosphere and it is excellently done.
One part which I like is the "outsider hero" main character. Even if he has all that outsider flaws, he also has some perks and it lacks that "so outsider - so hero" American pathos we usually get in these scenarios. This feels more real, more relatable, than absolute teenage dirtbag with no friends, overly-heavily-bullied and totally ostracised. The one who in the worst cases suddenly turns the tide and becomes all number one. Yeah, that's a pile of bullshit.
This comic is highly relatable to all who at least were born in that time, it brings a bit of nostalgia for times which have some silver lining but we would never want it back.

I wish the map and info pages were before the story- instead of with the index descriptions of "mentions" at the rear.
If the noses and eyebrows (so often resembling horns) didn't bother me so much I might call this a masterpiece! Stunningly orchestrated narrative is still victim to aesthetics in this medium and every-panel-annoying-stuff took the shine of of this otherwise treasure!

Mana pirmā asociācija turpinājās visu grāmatu - komikss ir kā multfilma "Mans mīļākais karš". Ne jau sižeta ziņā, bet uzdevuma - parādīt, kāda bija bērnība toreiz. Tā kā nezinu, vai bez priekšzināšanām būtu uztvērusi fonu un vai bērni to vispār saskatīs, nevaru likt vairāk par 4 zvaigznēm. Jo bez tā fona komikss par neveiklo puiku, kurš izrādās talantīgs pingpongā, ir mīlīgs, bet nekas īpašs.

Дуже давно хотів прочитати “Кіндерланд”, бо чув багато позитивних відгуків, а ідея більше дізнатися про життя в НДР виглядала цікаво. Але щось пішло не так. Або книга не потрапила мені в настрій, або я просто не цільова аудиторія (12+).
Очікував історію, яка передасть побут, настрої, труднощі й ментальність людей зі Східної Німеччини(НДР) під владою совку. Хотілося побачити, як це життя впливало на повсякденність, відносини між людьми, їхні мрії та страхи.
Але по факту отримав зовсім інше (можливо проблема завищених очікувань). У центрі сюжету — група школярів, які буквально одержимі настільним тенісом, і все, що відбувається, крутиться навколо цього. Немає навіть спроби пояснити, чому теніс настільки важливий для героїв, чи як це пов’язано з тогочасною реальністю. Дуже давно хотів прочитати “Кіндерланд”, бо чув багато позитивних відгуків, а ідея більше дізнатися про життя в НДР виглядала цікаво. Але щось пішло не так. Або книга не потрапила мені в настрій, або я просто не цільова аудиторія (12+).
Очікував історію, яка передасть побут, настрої, труднощі й ментальність людей зі Східної Німеччини(НДР) під владою совку. Хотілося побачити, як це життя впливало на повсякденність, відносини між людьми, їхні мрії та страхи.

This is a fascinating story about a young boy growing up in East Germany just before the fall of the Berlin wall. The story portrays everyday life in East Germany and everyday life in high school and shows how neither are easy experiences.
Mirco Watzke is a model student but also a target for bullies. He finds an ally and a new friend in the new boy at school. The new boy is a bit of a mystery because he isn't in the Young Pioneers or the Free German Youth, both of which were groups for young people that existed in communist Germany.
The story focuses on the every day ups and downs of high school life. Mirco has friends and is fond of playing ping-pong but we get to see how the school equipment and other other modern consumer goods such as records and sports equipment and sometimes food, are limited in East Germany. Life is actually quite hard and in this graphic novel we see this through the eyes of the children. The story indirectly portrays the way that people flee East Germany. The children don't always understand why their friends stop coming to school only to discover that they have fled to the West with their parents. The mysterious new boy has possessions that other children don't have because his father sends them to him from the West and so on.
In the midst of all of these stresses and strains of life in East Germany, Mirco goes to school, gets good grades and stays out of trouble. He even goes to church but keeps that part of his life quiet because church is viewed with suspicion by the state. Mirco is also a normal boy with the usual conflicts with his sister and parents, especially when he gets into trouble with the new boy.
The story is a birds-eye view of Eastern Germany before the wall falls, as seen through the eyes of children. The difficulties of living in communist Germany are explained through the eyes of children and since it is nuanced in this way it and can be missed. The artist of this book provides a detailed glossary at the end of the book and explains some of those nuances.
All in all it's a very interesting comic and I enjoyed reading it because at the heart of the story is a very engaging tale about camaraderie and family.
My only complaint about this graphic novel is that it ended on a real cliffhanger and that's very annoying because it leaves the story incomplete (for me at least), other than that it is a good graphic novel, suitable for both adults and children.

Po “Kinderland” warto sięgnąć choćby po to, by zobaczyć jak można napisać komiks, w którym brawurowo autor pokazał grę w ping-ponga, a wokół stołu do gry osnuł historię przerażająco smutną.
Historia NRD zbliża się ku końcowi, ale maluchy z berlińskiej szkoły nie mają o tym pojęcia. Co prawda częściej ktoś nagle znika i można podsłuchać rozmowy rodziców o jakimś innym świecie, ale rozmawiać o tym nie jest bezpiecznie i nawet w szkole trzeba się pilnować. Trzeba się pilnować zwłaszcza przed prymusami, aktywistkami i straszną panią Kranz, szkolną komendantką. Mirco wie, że nie może nikomu opowiedzieć o tym, że jest ministrantem, a Angela Werkel (co za złośliwość autora!), szkolna przewodnicząca wszystkiego, uprzejmie doniesie. Są też w szkole starsi, którzy rozrabiają i przeszkadzają w grze w ping-ponga, którą Mirco uwielbia. Taki klasyczny podział szkolnych typów, który pozwala Mawilowi opowiedzieć historię ostatnich dni NRD. I tak jak dorośli negocjują zjednoczenie, tak dzieci traktują pingpongowy stół jako miejsce własnych negocjacji i walki o dominację. W świecie dzieci jest wiele radości i choć dookoła szaro, to Mawil fantastycznie pokazuje, że dobre dzieciństwo można mieć też w złym świecie.
Dla mnie “Kinderland" to doskonały przykład na to, że można opowiedzieć historię dorastania w epoce przełomu bez patosu, przerostu wielkiej historii nad zabawą, a do tego wciąż bawić się komiksową formą - piłeczki wyskakujące poza kadr, plansze udające komiks superbohaterski, czy próby pokazania dynamiki gry - Mawil rysuje fantastycznie i panuje nad materią mistrzowsko.
To jest komiks o smutnych ludziach, którzy często grali role, których nie chcieli. O dorosłych, których świat zaraz runie i o dzieciach, dla których otworzy się on na oścież. Trochę szkoda, że Mawil nie opowiedział nam, co wydarzyło się po zjednoczeniu Niemiec, ale na spotkaniu autorskim opowiadał, że kolejny komiks poświęci rowerom, co może jakoś skusi go do opisania tragedi, której “Kinderland" jest tylko zapowiedzią. Kupcie sobie “Kinderland" jeśli chcecie zobaczyć, że kryjówki budowało się niezależnie od ustroju. Dla mnie jeden z najciekawszych komiksów, jakie przeczytałem w ostatnich latach, aż szkoda, że nikt o polskiej historii nie mówi z taką gracją i łatwością jak Mawil o NRD.

Me ha gustado mucho esta memoria gráfica de la infancia en el Berlín del Este, justo antes de la caída del muro. Creo que el autor ha sabido plasmar perfectamente el tránsito a la adolescencia, que es algo muy difícil de hacer. Hay una mezcla de nostalgia con otros momentos que te recuerdan lo horrible que era el instituto. Además, me gusta mucho el protagonista (que sospecho que es un poco alter ego del autor), no es buenísimo, popular o guapo. De hecho es muy bajito, se le da fatal el deporte y mete la pata muchas veces, no siempre es el más noble. Eso le da mucha autenticidad.
Me ha interesado mucho también conocer la cultura, sobre todo la educación, de la Alemania del Este de la que no sabía demasiado.
Pero sabes que no le daría 5 estrellas si las ilustraciones no fueran fantásticas. El color está elegido con muchísimo gusto y la variedad en los personajes es increíble. Con un par de trazos ya te imaginas cómo son. El problema es que no sé si es difícil encontrar esta novela gráfica en otro idioma que no sea el alemán.

Ein Buch voller Kindheitserinnerungen, v.a. für die sogenannte "3te Generation Ost". Auch wenn der Plot etwas dahinplätschert, gelingt es Mawil eine authentische Geschichte mit Atmosphäre zu erzählen.

February 6, 2025несподівано теплий coming of age в декораціях останніх днів Східного Берліну. переважно про внутрішню гармонію і про те, що інколи найпростіші з речей можуть бути важливішими за якісь там падіння мурів та інші бурхливі події. спочатку не викупив чому він так по-дитячому намальований, але ж ностальгійна історія про світло посеред мороку і має виглядати як умовний мульт із дитинства, коли всі рідні були поруч і все було добре. пазл склався, я теж.
(тільки от Violator вийшов аж в березні 90-го. пане Мавіль, здається, у вас анахронізм. ваш душніла.)

მარტივად და ლამაზად მოყოლილი ამბავი, რომელიც გვგონია რომ დიდი ხნის წინ მოხდა. სინამდვილეში კი ამ პროცესის მონაწილეები ჩვენი მშობლები არიან. წიგნში კარგად ჩანს მათი დამოკიდებულება და ის ყოველდღიური დეტალები, რაც 80-90-იანი ადამიანების გონებაში ხდება, განსაკუთრებით კი იმ ადამიანების, ვინც კედლის მეორე მხარეს ცხოვრობდნენ.
ჩემი ნება რომ იყოს, სკოლის პროგრამაში შევიტანდი. ძალიან ბედნიერი ვარ რომ ახლა მაინც მომეცა საშუალება ამ სტილით გამეგო მეოცე საუკუნის ერთ-ერთი ყველაზე მნიშვნელოვანი მოვლენის შესახებ.

Kind of expected more. It was more of a kid's PoV of 1989 and not a whole ton of what I expected regarding the berlin wall. But other than that. A fine book and good to help your german skills back up

Настільний теніс - оце я розумію! Я в дитинстві грала в настільний теніс всюди де могла, а грати мене навчила бабуся) Класні ілюстрації та в кінці коміксу пояснення до всіх деталей на цих ілюстраціях 👍🏼 Схід, теніс, багато тенісу, мур, захід - коротко про головне.

Good stuff: charming slice of life story about the trials of late elementary/early middle school age children in 1989, on the cusp of the fall of the Berlin wall, in East Germany. It perfectly captures the awkwardness of liminal spaces: preadolescence (being your own person yet under the control of your parents and under the influence of friends, peers and culture) and that moment in a society when everything is about to change (clinging on to the traditions yet craving for access to the new).
Just Ok stuff: the transitions between seasons/holidays were weird. I suppose the idea is that in our memories, stuff that happens around defining moments in our lives is just that, "stuff" / a filler, it's a bit hazy, it happened, it was real but kind of melts in the background/passes by quickly.
I liked it enough to pick it back up where i left off, actually checking it out this time after leaving it behind at the library the last time for being too chonky, but ultimately, for me it was OK/good, not great, though i actually warmed up to it as i was writing this review. :)
