Hockey Rules #3

Rule #3: Never Fake Marry the Coach's Son

Rate this book
Oskar

I’ve spent three years keeping my crush on Dmitri Volkov strictly professional. I can’t afford to think about his wicked smile or the way his dark hair falls over his eyes. He’s my father’s most troublesome player...and definitely straight.
But when Dmitri bursts into my apartment needing a green card marriage, I suddenly find myself engaged to the team’s notorious bad boy—the same player who’s been starring in my fantasies since the day he arrived from Russia.
My father, the team’s head coach, will explode when he finds out. But saying no to Dmitri isn’t a thing I can do. Now I just need to pretend to the world that we’re madly in love and pretend to Dmitri that I’m totally not.

I hate being harsh in a review but I think this is possibly the worst book that I have ever read. It's absolutely nonsensical and I would be amazed if anyone other than the author had read this before it was published. It's so obvious that no actual research has been done and this just read as rambling thoughts of a plot idea and not an actual story at all.

The plot had a lot of potential: fake marrying your NHL hockey coach's son to stay as US citizen, but the execution was abysmal. More attention is given to the few sex scenes in this book than to the actual plot and characters! The whole thing was so bizarre...

The reasoning for why Dmitri's visa is under contention was that his agent hadn't been completing his paperwork correctly and had run off with a lot of his clients' money. The amount of sheer idiocy in this plot had me astounded too - nothing added up, nothing made sense, conversations just weren't had! The couple has an interview with three journalists where they are asked two questions and that's it - the questions aren't even relevant! Every single character just immediately assumes the relationship is fake and can't possibly be real. Every. Single. Person. The immigration interviewer was even worse, she asked exactly zero questions and just made statements based on what she'd seen in the media. Not once did she actually let them speak or say anything at all about their relationship! It was ridiculous. It's like the fake relationship trope got really confused somewhere...

I also don't understand how Dmitri can suddenly take a couple of days off in the middle of a busy NHL schedule to fly himself and Oskar to Vegas to get married with not one journalist realising, or the team not noticing that he's not where he's supposed to be? Why did they have to go to Vegas to get married when they could have gone to their local courthouse? It made no sense.

The fact that everyone and their dog already knew that Oskar was in love with Dmitri was weird. The fact that not one person in this entire book was able to open their mouth and speak in a coherent, uninterupted sentence was amazing. The only people who got to finish what they were saying were Daniela the PR demon, the horrendous homophobic team owner, and the woman conducting the entirely unprofessional immigration interview. I wanted to pull my hair out, because Oskar and Dmitri were both saying everything right internally but for some reason the author decided to never let them actually get a sentence out when talking to anyone??? Very strange choice.

If Dmitri had actually been able to speak externally instead of saying absolutely everything that he needed to say internally, this book would have gotten at least two stars instead. Oskar also wasn't allowed to say anything? This book is the worst example of the miscommunication trope that I have ever seen, and it all seems to have been done to cause confusing drama, conflict and tension rather than an actual engaging and interesting story. It just lead to an extremely frustrating reading experience.

The way that Oskar's dad comes to realise that they do have a genuine relationship, turns up at the immigration interview to support Dmitri in his attempt to remain in the country, yet then offers Oskar a beer and to watch TV after Dmitri was told to leave the country while saying that Dmitri was just an 'f-boy who wasn't serious' was baffling??? That's the first thing you say to your son when the man you know he's in a real relationship with is deported? It made zero sense. No matter what angle you look at it, the actions of the MCs and the side characters in this book made no sense. I don't understand why this book was published as it is? Frankly it should never have seen the light of day without a serious edit and someone to notice and fix all of the gaping plot holes.

If the miscommunication had been removed and Dmitri was still deported, I would have wanted to see them living together in Sweden instead and having that story because that would have been so refreshing - every hockey book is always set in America and Canada so there was real potential here to explore the hockey system in a European country, but it was just used as a last resort and shoved in at the end of the book as a solution to a fucking weird and unrealistic situation to begin with. I just don't understand the author's choices in this book and that's not something I ever say!

This series is honestly so weird and I read a fucking ton of books so I feel valid in saying this was the worst book I have ever read. Before reading this book I was actually interested in the next book in this series, which features a hockey player and a sports reporter who are enemies, but I really don't want to waste my time reading any more from this author because the likelihood is that their story wont be any more well thought out than the others in this series, and that's such a shame because all of the plot ideas have had so much potential.

Tropes: friends to lovers, marriage of convenience/fake relationship
Feels: 3/5
Steam*: 2/5
Kinks: n/a
Angst: low
HEA: yes
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks/content warnings: absent father, dead mom, homophobia, pining
Cheating between MCs: No
Any cheating: No
Other person drama: Oskar has had a crush on Dmitri for 3 years and has pined while watching him hook up with lots of women over the years. Though it sounds like Dmitri slowed down recently and hasn't been with anyone for a couple months before the book starts. Neither of them are interested in anyone else during this book, though people flirt with them.

3.5 stars

Oskar is 23, gay, studying to be a lawyer and working for the hockey team that his dad coaches in the interim. He's known Dmitri for about 3 years and they've developed a friendship in that time. He's had a crush on Dmitri but Dmitri has identified as straight, and always been a fuckboy. So it's been unrequited. But now Dmitri is in a pinch with his immigration status and he needs to get married and get a green card in order to stay in the country. So Dmitri proposes that they got married.

It doesn't go as smoothly as they want it to go, people find out pretty darn quickly and don't believe that it's a real marriage, because it really isn't. But soon it does become real, because they do have feelings for each other, and Dmitri has a bi awakening and they add sex to their relationship. But is it too little too late? Can they convince the immigration folks?

This was a nice rom-com. I'd like these characters in the other books, and I was intrigued to see what would happen with them. I thought it was cute how Dmitri was obsessed and possessive and protective over Oskar for so long before he realized that his feelings were more than platonic. And Oskar was a bumbling sweetheart. I would have liked to see the book span a larger time frame, so we could have seen them evolve for longer and I think there would have been better tension that way. They progressed really quickly from getting married to getting the decision from the immigration folks about whether Dmitri could stay.

I don't want to spoil the ending, it was an HEA, but it was a bit disappointing for me how things played out. With the political climate in the USA right now, it struck some negative chords with me and just reminded me of a lot of injustice and made me sad. Which isn't a nice feeling when you get to the end of a rom-com and start to tear up.

And random petty note, there were at least five typos. And I know English is not Dmitri's first language, so I don't count his English as a second language mistakes as typos. These were other obvious typos outside of that.

Some notable moments:

"I throw him my most dazzling smile and wink. “Hi, Daddy.” Gasps sound from the locker room. Eyes bulge. Pads drop. Coach’s fist comes out, and I topple down when it collides with my jaw. I could take him. But I’ll give him this win. After all, I did just marry his only son."

"This is going to work. Oskar and I will be married, and I won’t be sent back to Russia. And no Canadian will hit on Oskar either. I smile, thinking about next time we go to a party. Hopefully the Canadian guy will be back. I think about when he learns that Oskar and I are married, and my smile widens."

"Some emotion I don’t recognize moves into Oskar’s eyes, but then he nods. “So we’ll hold hands.” “Is practice for when we have to tell everyone we’re married.” “And you really don’t mind? Because I’m a man, and...” “I’m not going to not hold your hand because you have a penis, Oskar.” His mouth drops. “I see many penises every day,” I remind him. He swallows. “I-I guess you do.” “Is not scary.”"

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Exactly what I was hoping for!

Dimitri has to be the most adorable MC I’ve read in a long time ! He’s so clueless about his and Oskars feelings yet is single handedly the best book boyfriend (husband*** ). This is my first 5star MM romance of the year. I hope everyone gets a chance to read it !

This book had the potential to be great—a lot of potential—but fell short. The way conversations are written is just awful. It's like you are talking to a baby, not two men having conversations. I get that the guy is Russian and getting used to English, but for the love of God, this book could have been great if the proper grammar had been used.

Frustrating

This series has the potential to be truly amazing. The plot is great, the characters are perfect. But the execution needs A LOT more help. It gets confusing when whole parts of the story get skipped. And frustrating...

********** Contains Spoilers**********

I thought that it was another good addition to the Hockey Rules Series. It’s also my favourite of the series so far. I really enjoyed this book and thought that Dmitri and Oskar were adorable together and I really liked how their relationship progressed. They’ve always had an extremely close bond since they first met. Oskar has been half in love with Dmitri and I think the only person that is oblivious is Dmitri himself, even knowing it’s hopeless because Dmitri is straight or so he thinks. I like that even though Dmitri only asked Oskar to marry him so he could get a green card, he made their wedding special in his own way.

Even if it was just a quickie wedding in Vegas. I thought that their chemistry was off the charts as it turns out the Dmitri isn’t as straight as he thought. Man, I wanted to reach through the pages and hug Dmitri and Oskar during the last few chapters, they of course got their happily ever after but I was worried for a moment. I’ve pre-ordered the Jason’s book, Rule #4: Never Get Stranded with a Sports Reporter which I’m looking forward to reading it when it’s released in August. I’d recommend this book, series and author to others.

Dmitri is days away from being kicked out of the country and sent back to Russia after his agent screws him and his NHL career over. Desperate to stay and get a green card, he realizes there is only one thing he can do. Get married. And who better than his best friend, Oskar? For Oskar, he has been secretly in love with Dmitri for a long time but knows that Dmitri is straight. But he can’t not help his friend. He finds himself swept away to Vegas for a quick wedding. But their return is anything but great. No one believes their marriage. And the two of them are too bad of liars to really pull it off. But this situation has done something else for them, especially for Dmitri. He really begins to realize that what he feels for Oskar was always more than friends, he was just never able to see it before. And now it could be too late! Short and sweet, Dmitri and Oskar were a pretty fun couple. And I liked that Oskar finally got the guy of his dreams in the most unexpected way.

I really liked this book. Dmitri was such a good character and I already knew I liked him from Noah and Finn’s book. I love his little accent, and he’s so adorable. I love a good oblivious straight guy trope when it comes to mm romances, and I think the author did a good job with this one.

the story itself was good. I like that they played it out in a different way, that instead of a drunk marriage (which is how many accidental/fake marriages start) it was so Dmitri could get a green card.

Of course there’s a few things in the story that aren’t realistic. Like everyone except Dmitri knowing Oskar had a crush on him. And Dmitri’s agent not bothering to fix with his visa seems like an easy way to crest that need for the green card.

Overall really liked the book, and would definitely recommend.

The relationship between these two was very sweet and wholesome in a lot of ways. I enjoyed how cute these two were.... but that was about it. This is not a book you can read by itself. This is the first book I've read by this author, and I feel like I was missing the first part of the book because the development between these two was not there at all. This book also didn't really have much of anything going on at all besides the fake relationship and nobody believing it was real. That is the entire book, and it was very repetitive. There were good and sweet moments, but this book was very meh and underdeveloped for me, unfortunately.

3.5 🌟

Well good plot and character, fast passed though.
Was good nonetheless.

It was crazy, like how can Volkov be this oblivious. Hello, you were so protective of him, always remember all about him, you mention him every time even in your own head. There is also the fact that you understand each other without talking. How can you not know???

They are so cute together that even me I knew they love each other.

Ok let's end it here. Thanks Kindle for the recommendations. It was good.

Dmitri was one of my favourite side characters throughout this series, so of course, I was going to pick up his story.

Staring down the barrel of a decoration back to Russia and completely unaware of the fact that Oskar is madly in love with him, he proposes they get married.

Best friends to lovers, fake marriage, and bi Awakening with lots of laughs.

I will admit, I was very intrigued by Dimitri. He is a very interesting character to me, and it was a fun one.

However, the end kind of disappointed me, because it was a bit anticlimatic.

Dimitri is such a perfect boyrfriend to Oskar without even realising it, and it has a lot of potential to be an amazing book.

Green card marriage! Did not go where I thought it would. Also went really fast like, building, building, building, oh! It's already 80%.

Gotta be honest, I'm sure there are USCIS employees just as irresponsible as this one, but the way she handled Dmitri's interview was just egregiously bad. Did not love that.

It's obvious that some mm authors have not met a queer person in their life, and here it's more obvious than usual. What the what?! Also, editing? Where is it? There are whole paragraphs of repetitions, and towards the end nothing made sense.

Love this series. So far this is my favourite. I love how clueless Dmitri is about Oscar's feelings towards him, and equally of his own. I laughed, got mad and got a little teary reading this book.
