I listened to the audio version of this just to hear Indira Varma (and a few others) one more time after my re-read of the series while also looking at the gorgeous hardcover edition.

So the story is that Tiffany has compiled (with Granny, nanny and Rob Anybody commenting) a guide to being a witch. Therefore, we're told about how to become a witch, the hierarchy and sisterhood, the differences between country and specialist witches, attires and equipment, familiars, where witches live, gods, the Nac Mac Feegles and more. There are also profiles on a number of witches from the series.

The book is gorgeously illustrated with every page looking like parchment and there being big(ger) and small(er) illustrations of creatures, places, witches and their stuff throughout.

Here are a few examples:

(Yes, the illustrations are by the official Discworld artist, Paul Kidby.)

Of course, it's not like Sir Terry's writing but I gotta hand it to his daughter and her co-author: they did good! It was surprisingly chuckle-worthy in a way reminiscent of Sir Terry's own writing. It's not a story per se but it's quite nice having this and it felt right if that makes sense. You know, as if it had always been part of the series.

Nice end to re-reading the series and getting closure.

I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Kaleidoscopic book tours.

Tiffany Achings Guide to Being A Witch is an absolutely stunning and informative read for both children and adults. This is certainly a book to pick up again and again, and always find something new each time.
The book is centred around being a guidebook for everything witchy and is stunningly illustrated throughout. The book covers things to do/have if you want to be a witch, such as what to wear, must-have accessories, where to live, and selecting a familiar and much more in between. We meet a host of Witches and learn more about them, which was a lot of fun!
This is such a beautiful and well put together book that is now pride of place on my bookshelf and will be treasured for many years to come.

Did you love Terry Pratchett’s Discworld witches? Were you charmed following Tiffany Aching as she grew from a witch-child wielding a frying pan into Discworld’s young head witch? Did you hate saying goodbye to all the witches (and Discworld, too) after finishing The Shepherd’s Crown? If so, you are the audience Rhianna Pratchett (Sir Terry’s daughter) had in mind when she wrote Tiffany Aching’s Guide to Being a Witch.

There’s no plot, really. The book is just an excuse to revisit some of the wit and wisdom of Discworld’s witches. Told in Tiffany Aching’s voice (with occasional asides from other witches) this is a valentine for those who loved Pratchett’s witches and would like to revisit them just one last time. Not recommended if you haven’t already read Pratchett’s witch book series.

Tiffany Aching’s Guide to Being a Witch by Rhianna Pratchett and Gabrielle Kent and illustrated by Paul Kid h takes Sir Terry’s witches and packages them up in a charming compendium. As someone who hasn’t yet read the Witches books (scandalous I know!) I didn’t feel lost at all reading this. It is written by Tiffany with help from her mentors - and the wisdom of her experience. It doesn’t feel hugely spoilery and made me excited to get stuck into the 5 books I own with cover illustrations by Laura Ellen Anderson. I’m also looking forward to coming back to this afterwards. The authors have captured Sir Terry’s trademark humour and I particularly enjoyed the conversations in the margins. This is a stunning slipcased book with gilded edges, and is fully illustrated throughout. Covering everything from what type of witches appear in the discworld, to what they wear this would make the perfect Christmas present for a Pratchett fan - if they haven’t already bought it for themselves. Huge thanks to Bee at @kaleidoscopictours and @puffinbooksuk for the #gifted copy. Opinions are all my own and I wasn’t put under a spell to say anything.

Being a huge fan of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld for many years, Tiffany Aching's Guide to Being a Witch was right up my street.

It makes a great compliment to the series and for me, is great for Children and adults.

Let's talk about the front cover. It's absolutely beautiful in mainly light greens, blues and browns. The title stands out in gold along with the gold edging to the pages. It will certainly stand out on any bookshelf, and the beautiful slip case for the hardback adds to the quality feel.

Turning the pages you will find all you need to know should you like to become a witch, from where you should live, the attire you should wear, what accessories are required, and how to select the best familiar.

There are also lots of various notes and information on lots of other aspects of being a witch.

Throughout the book there are absolutely superb illustrations, on almost every page, which add to the joy of reading this book.

I can only imagine the effort it must have taken to put this excellent book together, it really was a pleasure to read.

A big 5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.

I have been a big fan of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series since reading Maskerade many years ago and this is a perfect accompaniment.

If you’re training to be a witch, or planning to, this is the perfect guide on everything you need to know from what attire you need to where you should live, what familiar is best or the only accessories you need. There are handy notes throughout from Nanny Ogg and Mistress Weatherwax, as well as Miss Tick the witch finder (not to be confused with a witch hunter).

The illustrations that accompany the text are superb, so much detail and great likenesses of the great witches themselves. There are chapters on what type of witch you can specialise as and helpful tips from each of these.

Tiffany certainly leaves nothing out, this is the most comprehensive guide to being a witch I’ve had the pleasure to read (thank you Rhianna & Gabrielle)

This needs more than five stars! Paul Kidby's fabulous illustrations, being able to reconnect with some of my favourite literary characters, "hearing" Granny Weatherwax's voice in the marginalia ( oh the marginalia - a delight in their own right!) and being within touching distance of another STP book via his daughter's writing - I was just delighted with everything about this book.

This book is not a nostalgic trip in sir Terry Pratchett's 'Discworld', but as it says - a guide for witches to become or want to be, beautifully illustrated by the great Paul Kidby. Stepping on the guiding lines about witchery that the late Pratchett marked through his works, with added comments by old beloved characters, some nostalgia for long time fans of Terry Pratchett is inevitable but it only brings smile and pleasure of reading.

Wholesome, cosy and gorgeously illustrated! Absolutely loved the annotations from characters chipping in and bickering in the margins. I haven't even read the Discworld series and I loved this (I am definitely fixing this soon! I know I'll love it and Pratchett has been on my list for a very long time).

Pozycja dotycząca Tiffany Obolałej to idealnie uzupełnienie serii Świat Dysku a zarazem świetne wprowadzenie w tajniki magii i czarownic dla początkujących.

A new Discworld spinoff, and by Rhianna Pratchett as well! This book is a lot longer than I was initially expecting, and has a lot of great detail and is lavishly illustrated throughout (even if some of Kidby's art has been repurposed from previous works. A lot of it is brand new, however). Pratchett and Kent do a wonderful job of capturing the voice of Tiffany - and the many side comments by Granny, Nanny, Miss Tick, Rob Anybody and Mrs Earwig - covering everything about witchcraft on the Discworld. Although much of it rehashes the contents of the novels (references, theories and quotes galore), this is the first collection of all this information in one place. The authors have not invited anything new here (presumably on purpose) but they do manage to lay everything out in a good way for a reference, but with a narrative prose that is easy to read. Warning: This contains spoilers for all Discworld witchcraft books, including The Shepherd's Crown, so it really is for fans who've already read everything, and not for those just starting on Tiffany's journey.

A lovely book, more reminiscent of some of the other Discworld addenda like Nanny Ogg's Cookbook and the maps than the books. In a couple of places made me actually laugh out loud. So many nods to previous witches books made me want to re-read A Shepherd's Crown, and possibly also Witches Abroad...

I have four favorite Terry Pratchett Discworld characters--the Luggage, Death, Granny Weatherwax, & Tiffany Aching. I miss Sir Terry & his wonderful books, I could re-read them forever, but I'm always delighted when I find one I haven't read yet (they are few & far between) or when a new one, such as this is published. Rhianna has compiled witchy information from Tiffany Aching with commentary from several sources--Nanny Ogg, Granny Weatherwax & Miss Tick (fellow witches & mentors), & Rob Anybody (Nac Mac Feegle). Death also makes a small appearance so, with three of my four favorites, I was very happy to receive this book. First of all, it is beautifully packaged--a hard cover, embossed book sleeve t0 protect it, a gorgeous dust jacket, gold-edged pages, stunning illustrations, & filled with wonderful prose. This book was like coming home. I've always felt a kinship with the Discworld witches & their environs & I easily slipped back into their world as if I'd never left. With the wonderful Discworld humor & wisdom, Tiffany imparts the secrets of being a witch. a guide to doing it right. This is a special keepsake book to treasure forever & guide you not only in witchcraft but in life. I love it!

I was first introduced to the Discworld back in 1989 or 1990, when a friend let me borrow her copy of Wyrd Sisters to help with my understanding of Shakespeare’s Macbeth for my GCSE English coursework. Here I found a world of witches and dragons, but written in a such a lighthearted way I actually got grounded for laughing so much while my dad was trying to watch the news. (I let him read the book as soon as I finished and he laughed so much I was instantly ungrounded as it clearly wasn’t my fault!)

Terry Pratchett’s writing is so good, so accessible, and he was one of the few male authors around who could actually write women really well. I met witches in my first book, and always found their stories to be my favourites. The Tiffany Aching books were exactly the same, and she soon became a firm favourite of mine.

This book is a great roundup of the knowledge Tiffany learnt, along with the bits we as readers learnt along the way too, presented in a humorous way and beautifully illustrated too. It’s a brilliant book for fans, and a fantastic introduction to new readers too.

No bo kto by się spodziewał, że czarownica niekoniecznie potrzebuje miotłę?

Stanąć pomiędzy światłem i ciemnością"

Bycie czarownicą to ciągała nauka. Nauka i jeszcze raz nauka.

Kto by nie chciał chatki z piernika?

"Lustra i magia to zwykle niedobre połączenie"

A delight from cover to cover. I enjoyed Tiffany’s commentary on being a witch and I loved the “annotations” from other witches throughout the text. The illustrations and general layout of the book is wonderful, making it feel like a “proper” book from the Disc. My only gripe is that I found it very easy to put down: this doesn’t make it a bad book by any means but it does make it feel a little more disposable because I was able to go for long stretches without thinking about it… until I picked it up again. But it is a lot of fun.

Got this for Christmas, though I haven't read all of the Tifanny Aching books yet, I read it. There aren't very many spoilers, and the charectors that I hadn't met yet got full introductions so if you're just buying this book not having read the series, you're good! It's a great book and very informative about the witchcraft on discworld, and there are little notes from Nanny Ogg, Ms. Tick, and Granny Weatherwax that are pretty funny!

So, Tiffany Aching's Guide to Being a Witch. I won't attempt to summarise it because, well, either you're a Discworld fan and you already have a fairly good idea of at least some of the contents, or you need to go and read some of the Discworld Witch books first. If the latter, go, go. This review is not for you.

Still with me? All right. I'll start by saying that, as a (very) long-time Discworld fan, I confess, I was worried before this book's release that it might contain a significant amount of non-canon material – effectively using the fact that it’s a companion book to get around the “no new Discworld” edict. I probably wasn't alone in that, and I can happily report that I needn’t have been concerned. It does contain a few tiny new elements – mostly names – but they’re minimal, and a great deal of love and care has gone into getting them precisely right. Gabrielle Kent and Rhianna Pratchett have done a marvellous job.

Furthermore, the voices in the side-notes, especially those of Granny and Nanny, feel authentic. I was especially moved by Granny’s sympathy for Black Aliss in the "Cackling" section of "Perils & Pitfalls". I can imagine the casual Discworld reader (if such a person exists) might think of Granny as judgemental, but she really isn’t. Prideful, yes. Sometimes arrogant, certainly. Her OWN harshest critic? Quite possibly. But judgemental of others? No. She might be brusque, but under that has always been deep empathy and kindness. So when I read her "maysherestinpeace" note, followed by: "Weren't her fault. The story caught her." I had a little moment. Granny, as is noted elsewhere, understands people.

Incidentally, my Mum agrees wholeheartedly with Mistress Weatherwax that anyone offering a witch a biscuit with currants deserves to have their oven cursed.

And speaking of biscuits... or rather, of English versus American language... this is a book which, as one would expect, follows British English spelling conventions. Except for the "ize" endings. Which... can be a style choice, I suppose – Oxford spelling is a thing. It's not a thing I personally like but it is a thing. However, I am fairly sure that even Americans don't commit the abomination of spelling "advertise" as "advertize" (p133, I'm sorry, please forgive me). I'm not sure what happened there, but I suspect a search and replace beastie got into the workings at some point. Ah well, such idiosyncrasies make a book unique, don't they? I daresay this will be fixed in a later edition, and I shall end up feeling rather gleeful that I own an early "advertize" copy.

Overall, this is an astonishingly beautiful book. The presentation is lovely, with its slipcase and gilt edges, and the artwork is, of course, gorgeous. It's particularly nice to see some diversity in the representation of the witches. I hope we see more of that in the future.

I could pull out many lovely moments from this book, but the last page is particularly special. Terry Pratchett knew that endings matter, and that lesson has been passed along.

"While you look to the edges, don't forget to look to yourself. You matter."

And I suppose... has this opened a door, just a crack? Will we see Cheery Littlebottom's Guide to the Watch? Ponder Stibbons' Guide to the Unseen University? Susan's Guide to Being Death? (I rather like that title). And, of course, Moist von Lipwig's Guide to Ankh-Morpork? This last one authored by Rob Wilkins, perhaps? Time will tell. The Disc turns and the turtle moves.

GNU Terry Pratchett.
