Science fiction stories by Various
Aliens, AI and Escape from Planet Earth
Spoiler alert- there is no revealing of the ending here, so in that sense, an alert would not be necessary, however, the note is just about what a Science fiction story could offer as solution to what is happening somewhere near us…There appear to be no solutions to the catastrophe taking place next door, in Ukraine, and the way selfish minds work, there is the jump to a calamity that may engulf us first, in Eastern Europe, and then the whole world – this morning, as I have started on my jog, there was a car with Ukrainian plates nearby and I was thinking we should do something to help, but then we have such a state of affairs that instead of supporting potential visitors, refugees from Mariupol say, we would actually lower their level of wellbeing
Perhaps the escape would come from outer space, or at least from thinking about it, evading the depressing universe in which we live now…otherwise, the despot in the Kremlin will not stop, until many more cities are in ruins, countries that are a threat to him – which after he will have tortured Ukraine long enough, will include those that supplied arms, have taken refugees, and then, since this a deranged ‘scum’, to utilize the words from his own speeches, we are talking about, at random, he will target various lands – will have been ‘de-Nazified’, which means what we have already seen in history, whether we talk of World War II and the aftermath when we have been ‘blessed’ with the communist system, brought by our soviet protectors from the USSR that the czar considers the greatest calamity of the last century and thus he has started to piece together again, stealing from Georgia, then Crimea and now he is really hungry for more…
So let us see that some aliens offer the solution, for we don’t have the means to depose the lunatic with access to the nuclear weapons launch button, and maybe they are watching and want to interfere…yours truly is reading Venus on the Half-Shelf and there are those responsible inhabitants of another planet, that have looked at earth and the way populations there have mistreated their home and decided to ‘clean the place up’, something they have been doing with many other planets that have neglected their duty towards their homes and polluted, sullied their environments beyond reason…
In our case, we are about to blow the place up, so this is a message to the other sentient species and an invitation for them to do something – in the comedy Venus on the Half Shelf, the intervention is a satire and perhaps a shot at the Bible, with its deluge story of Noah, for the planet is actually submerged to be cleaned and in the process, most, nearly all humans are drowned, together with innocent animals –and I volunteer, provide me with the means to depose Putin and then we can go hunting…evidently, you have to give me good, superman type shield and powers like that, though not being a fan of the genre, I must confess that I am not sure what these super beings do, except fly around, kick adversaries with immense power and if they are down, it is only temporary and they win…always!
So we are ready, expect your Arrival soon – incidentally, Arrival was directed by Denis Villeneuve, nominated for an Oscar then and again, for two this time, as Dune has collected 10 Academy Award Nominations http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/07/n... - and maybe you bring some good medicine with you, which could boost our minds’ abilities to confront the Red Plague…
Medicine better than the one that keeps appearing in Little Big Man, the opus magnum by Thomas Berger, which for the Native Americans that we meet with the hero appears to mean something good, soothing, but also exulting, not drugs – well, maybe including those, but medicine does not refer to chemicals as much as to a state of grace, the ability we get to rise above, with courage, vitality and…medicine, sometimes mescaline maybe http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/12/l...
What Bradley Cooper takes in Limitless would surely be of help, because it would make the mind many times more efficient, able to anticipate the moves of the sect around the Kremlin godfather – there is an article in The Economist Espresso, the associated app, about the banker that the dictator uses, the right hand man, a sort of Robert Duvall in the Godfather, consigliore to the capo, who is the banker, has built a house north of Sankt Petersburg, next to the dacha of the tyrant, where they have a gated community and the basis for this group of ghouls that dominate in that wretched land – how can they land only such scum, with few exceptions - http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/04/l...
So let us see, we need the pills from limitless and the Artificial Intelligence that aliens would have and we would only get once Singularity will have arrived on the blue planet – also in The Economist, there is an article of this theory and applying it to the war in Ukraine, and though I have not yet reached it, there was something some years back, which mentioned a time when computers will analyze all the data, tanks, artillery, troops, geography, terrain and all other such factors and come up with the result of a conflict, so that armies will not have to fight it in the real world, given that the result is printed ahead…
Let me see, there are some aliens arriving, and they have the required Medicine – which is Hideous Kinky, a wonderful expression and the title of a mesmerizing novel by Esther Freud – daughter of the acclaimed painter, absent though in her childhood, if the narrative is at least in part autobiographical, Lucien Freud and great- granddaughter of iconic Sigmund Freud - http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/12/l... and with help from Artificial Intelligence, we can do this…
Volodymyr Zelensky will have a few movies made about him, as it is, people around the world do not just cherish him as a super hero, they now buy his fashion style – there was this joke on the Jimmy Kimmel show on the sale of shirts and apparel that replicate the Zelensky style, while the despot in the Kremlin has poo, penises, pillows with him and Trump that are meant to mock and defile him – while his nemesis will go down in history as one of the most reviled villains, at least of the start of this century, for we do not know what his pal, Xi, will do in Taiwan – what comes to mind refers to his ludicrous, almost laughable, if it were not rather despicable attitude towards Lithuania – I think it is this, though it could be one of the other Baltic states, alas, I confuse them, even if I know Estonia is closer to the Nordic countries- which they try to boycott to an incredible extent, because they have accepted a Taiwan economic mission of some kind, instead of calling it Taipei something, which is only acceptable form for the giant bully, the vicious tyranny that now holds Putin in its arms…

A mixed bag.
As someone who generally enjoys classic scifi, I tried hard to like this collection, and there *are* good stories (though it's far too large a book to name individual names). By and large, however, the authors are unfamiliar and the tales mediocre, and the sexism, racism, and jingoism all too abundant. In these stories women are helpless; men are red-blooded quick-fisted patriots; humans are white Americans; aliens are either superintelligently evil or exceedingly primitive (and have an annoying tendency to sound Black, Hispanic, or Asian--but not in any good way); heroes are "superb physical specimens"; and villains give grandiloquent speeches detailing their plans. Also, this anthology was obviously put together with OCR software without being proofread--the second half of the volume is particularly rife with mistakes.
In short, you may find something you like here, and these stories may have thrilled people in their day, but to modern eyes there's a lot here to disappoint.

Many hours of great reading
And a few hours of not so great reading. Many of the stories are dated and some are just pure so-called space opera. Some of the science science fiction is clearly wrong or updated.
