305 days ago, the dead rose. 30 days ago, my colony burned. 2 days ago, I was captured.
No one is coming to save me. No one even knows I’m here, except for the three men in the cells next to mine. I’ve never seen their faces, only heard their voices: Damon’s steady commands, Cole’s cryptic whispers, and Benji’s teasing humor that somehow makes me smile in the dark.
Then there’s Avery. A dreg. Part of the nightmare I can’t escape. But his touch lacks the cruelty of the others, and his watchful gaze leaves me questioning everything—including the dangerous pull between us.
The bright light in this? The mixed labrador puppy who saves me as much as I save her.
With each passing day, my hope fades. Escape feels impossible. And yet, the men in the dark, the ones I can’t even see, might risk everything for me.
The dead may have destroyed the world, but it’s the living who will break me.
And the most dangerous threat of all? Falling for four men I might not survive.
**Whispers of the Dead is a standalone novel in a zombie apocalyptic romance featuring a strong heroine, tormented yet overprotective heroes, and the bitter truth that just might destroy them. Find out what happens when the dead bring them all together.
Kidnapping story that happens to take place in the zombie apocalypse. Zombies play a very tiny role here, and everything happens because the author needs it to happen. The characters all act certain ways because the author needs them to act that way. The characters fall in love pretty much instantly because, well, you get the picture.
So many random things were happening in this story, even things that contradicted themselves, I was honestly annoyed. I don't even want to remember it all so I'm just expanding the few notes I took and calling it good:
Giving a bj to someone that's been in a cell for months with only a bucket to relieve himself? Nastyyyy. Some of y'all must have horrible senses of smell and taste to find that sexy because this girl doesn't even a toothbrush or water to wash that stench out of her mouth ffs.
Okay so there's only spice with two out of four of her guys in the book. The other one goes down on her and she went down on him earlier (🤮) while the last one she literally only kisses a few times. It's not normally a huge deal to have in page spice except that if you're going to put it in the book at all, and you're writing why choose content, it's exceptionally aggravating to have it uneven like that. Also there are zero group scenes, and only two very quick full scenes at all. Just fyi if that's what you're reading this for.
Inconsistencies and confusion, like talking about a lot of people being in a room surrounding them then they suddenly disappear, then it was only two of them (it was written like there were more) then one of them is taken out but later two were taken out and we don't know what happened to the other one or when it happened. A door always making sounds when it's opened except for the multiple times that people suddenly show up in the hallway without the door having made a sound to surprise them. A character isn't in his cell then he suddenly talks as if he's been there the entire time. Repeated paragraphs word for words a few paragraphs after they already took place.
Lastly, as someone with multiple family members with diabetes (both type 1 and type 2), I highly, highly doubt she could have lasted that long without her insulin EVEN IF SHE WASN'T EATING STUFF. Istg just reading how long she went without it and then it was only an issue ONCE had me getting greys from stress I didn't ask for. And this book does a poor job of letting us know how much time has passed, but it was days then weeks at the very least. Unfortunately, that's not realistic at all to me, and my own trauma from some close calls with the ones around me and waking up in the middle of the night and having dial 911 after finding someone in a diabetic coma after a simple miscalculation of how much insulin they'd need just to survive one night, and alllll the times throughout each and every day when an adjustment is needed bc their activity level changed or they ate more than they thought, or a million other reasons, has me rejecting the idea of going that long without it as even possible.
This book could have been so good.

This book was the definition of underwhelming. (And in desperate need of edits.)
I didn't expect 90% of the book to take place with all the main characters being in separate cells... Literally imprisoned until the end where it seemed everything happened all at once. (We literally only see one interactions with the zombies?)
Also there was a betrayal that barely made sense and was led up to throughout just to have it resolved and forgiven right away? Seemed like a waste.
There was also an insane amount of plot holes. For example the cell is big enough for two grown men and a woman to fight one of them... but when the guards come to give her food and she is plastered at the back of her cell she can smell their breath?
Or the scenes with the tunnels/parking garage/but also they are outside? But then they aren't again?
Or when there is a horde about to close in on them but they all stop to catch up. LOL. What?
Orrrr when the guys are cuffs behind their backs but then they are somehow free and wrapped around the fmc when shit starts going down.
There were so many examples of things being described one way but then changing the next to fit the plot.
Unfortunately I do not recommend. The idea is there but it just needs more work imo.

I liked this story. I love this zombie apocalypse world that Maya has envisioned. These type of story’s captivate me.
Zoey leaves her new colony to help her best friend Emily because she is sick. Those two girls are so loyal (I need to find me a friendship like them). Zoey ignores the one rule which is to scavenge with a buddy. She goes into this deserted town to find medication for Emily. She gets grabbed by a dreg and taken to a compound where she is in prison for most of the book. While in her cell, she meets three men who are also stuck in the dark cells. They form a bond and vow to escape together. The former ruler of the compound saves Zoey several times from the Man who is infatuated with her after the other DREGS torment, Zoey.
All in all this was a really great book and I’m ready for the next.
