Stripes is a fast-paced, entertaining, and inspirational memoir that chronicles George vonHilsheimer’s remarkable journey. From a failing, aimless teenager, he transformed into an Army paratrooper, helicopter pilot, and eventually, physician. His story is a testament to the power of personal growth and determination.

After learning discipline and leadership as a young paratrooper in Europe, George went on to become an attack helicopter pilot who deployed with the 82nd Airborne Division to face Saddam Hussein’s tanks in Iraq. Earning his education along the way, he eventually went to medical school, trained at the famed Walter Reed Hospital, and became an Army flight surgeon who performed life-saving actions at the Pentagon on 9/11/2001 and deployed twice more to combat in Afghanistan and Iraq.

From gripping, first-hand accounts of airborne operations, tactical helicopter flying, and battlefield exploits to honest and poignant reflections about some of the most remarkable events of our time, George tells an unlikely but true story of perseverance, survival, and accomplishment against the odds. His engaging storytelling, complete with authentic dialogue, endearing characters, and unexpected humor, will captivate any reader, whether they are a fan of military adventure or simply enjoy a compelling story of overcoming failure to achieve ultimate success.

From basically a washed out High School walk away to a respected Army and Civilian Doctor. Only in the USA! Much respect and hats off to the Author for his and his family’s many sacrifices while serving his country. And yes his loved ones served waiting for his return for those who haven’t been there. And a further beating of the drum from a fellow retired Veteran on his book. Truly an outstanding work. If you’ve been there done that and earned the T Shirt you know the truth.

great read

Amazing journey of a high schooler with no diploma to a full bird in the army in 30 years. Having experienced the medical and the military side of it I found the story enjoyable, the writing excellent and the adventures unbelievable (but I am sure are true!)

Not your typical military memoir

Interesting, insightful and sometimes humorous, the author is a rather good writer. His story is very compelling. A good read for military people as well as civilians.

Great read!

This guy had a lot of different experiences in the army than most of us did. And he showed how to overcome adversity in a big way. I am proud to say that he is currently my dermatology surgeon, and a great one at that.

Good read.

VonHilsheimer is a good writer with attention to detail. Having mirrored time frame he served I can relate to all of it. Amazing story of a self made man.

What a wonderful enjoyable read. My military career parallels the author. He details the skills of flying Army Aircrafts and the skills to fly these aircrafts. I love how he made it about his military career and less about his personal life.

Very informative about life in military. Not many themes discussed, mostly just event descriptions
