REVIEW
What a very insightful book this is. Written by Gugu Khazi, it looks at the importance of managing our careers or, as the author so aptly puts it, ‘owning our careers’. But the problem is, how do we do that? I remember when I lived in Japan, everybody I worked with in a particular company had worked there forever; the father had worked there, the grandfather too. But in the west, we don’t work that way anymore. Employee/employer loyalty is not what it was. As a result, we have to manage out careers, as there’s nobody to do it for us. And that’s what this book is all about.
If you feel your career is going nowhere or is underdeveloped in any way, you will find lots of helpful tips in this self-help book. The author works hard from the very first page to help readers understand the role you play in your own career management. There is a focus on developing skills, changing mindset and empowerment. The book also helps readers to identify where a career is and what a person need to do to progress further.
There were a number of elements to this book that particularly impressed me. Firstly, the way it’s organised is sensible – trust me when I tell you, a lot of self-help books are not – and, as a result, it’s accessible to readers and not difficult to dip into if you happen to be hunting for a specific topic. Secondly, I very much enjoyed the Author’s Story; it’s always good to know who it is that’s advising you. And, finally, the ‘twelve stages of a career’, which is very much the crux of the book, is illuminating, and acts as a framework, allowing the reader to get a handle on the author’s thoughts on the subject.
So, if you happen to be on the lookout for a well-written, sensibly constructed self-help book on career development and how to get to where you want to be, I think you’ll find this book a colossal help. Yes, parts of it are common sense; but that’s not a criticism. In fact, the ‘common sense’ aspects of it might be the book’s greatest strength.

An interesting take on careers and career development, the author's intention is great from the start and I do wish that this information could be best diffused in a workbook, with limited narrative so it's easier to follow the trend of thought.
I think that anyone who is into academia and the information content aspect of most course texts would easily get this, however to the general reader or someone working simpler and easier to follow narrative would best drive the message home.
Thank you Netgalley for the eARC.

This book has a lot of potential. The content is great but the narrative could be sharpened up. Each section starts from quite a high level and sometimes it takes a while to get to what this actually means for you and you can get from it. It would benefit from having smaller practical steps laid out and a summary at the beginning or end of the chapter. It’s all there, you just have to dig a little deeper to find it.
