The Gray Poet

During the Great Depression, Elliot Poet splits his time between Tennessee logging camps and local cemeteries, where he writes poems to escape the weight of his past. But everything changes when he finds a haunting poem about death with a blackbird signature and a chilling countdown. With only two days to unravel the poet’s identity, Elliot exchanges poems with the mysterious writer, which forces him to confront his inner demons.

When an old flame returns to town, Elliot grapples with rekindled feelings and the urgency to save a stranger.

With time running out, will Elliot be able to save a soul in despair—and, in the process, save himself, too?

How Miller wrote a compelling and heartfelt story in less than 10K words blows my mind. Though it is Caitlin after all, so I shouldn't be surprised. The Gray Poet captivated me from start to finish, seeing as I read it all in one sitting. Beautiful, poignant, moving...I know newsletter subscribers will be so blessed by this little story.

Caitlin Miller never disappoints with her words or her massage which stands clear in this poignant short story: when things are dark reach out a hand and someone will pull you up.

WOW! I was not prepared for how beautifully rich this short story is. This story will tug on your heart strings and remind you the importance of clinging to light. The darkness cannot, will not, overcome.

Brilliant story!!

Powerful. That’s the best word I can think of to describe this short book. While it is certainly short, it speaks in mighty ways. Words really can save. I will say I guessed who was actually responding to Poet, but it didn’t ruin the book. I quite enjoyed the entire thing. This book portrayed a theme that isn’t mentioned enough in our world today. Words can make a difference. Words can mean life or death. It all depends on how you use them.

Take care and happy reading ❤️

I had the pleasure of beta reading this short story and I cannot tell you how much it just grabbed me in.

The mystery was so compelling and I could feel the intensity of the MC trying to figure this out.

The author so cleverly keeps us on our toes, while sprinkling in a few clues as to who the MC is actually looking for.

"Death-it's a strange thing to dwell on at twenty-two. But I suppose that happens when you write poetry in cemeteries."

Wow, wow, wow......that might be the best short story I've ever read. Genuinely. It takes such talent to create a impactful story in only 30 pages. The characters and backstory are all so well developed. I was seriously tearing up at the end so attached was I to the characters and what was happening. It was the perfect length, so heartfelt and moving. Wow, wonderful job Caitlin.

This story is so beautiful!

The characters, the poetry, the overall plot - Caitlin Miller has written something so wonderfully deep in such a concise way. I haven't read many short stories in my life, but it was immediately clear to me that The Gray Poet was the perfect length, had just the right pacing, and held my attention the entire time.

Additionally, Caitlin's descriptive language drew me right into the setting of autumn in 1930s Tennessee. The story was the perfect blend of sweet and mysterious, and the moral of the story was one that I feel is severely overlooked in fiction. Amazing job, Caitlin! 🩶

This short story tugged at my heartstrings. It is a beautifully written reminder that we don't always know everything that's happening in someone's life and the importance of checking in on someone.

This is the most beautiful short story!
Years ago, in high school, I read a short story for an assignment called Two Words. And it has stuck with me ever since. The Gray Poet is going to live with me just the same. In fact, The Gray Poet is holding the pedestal for my favourite short story.
I was swept away with the poetry, the pain, and the healing. There is so much beauty in this small story. So much hope. I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted so many sections for such a short story. My heart needed this story and these reminders.

Beautiful, life affirming short story from Caitlin Miller.
In this short story Caitlin weaves together themes of trauma, loss, love, life and hope. A must read for anyone who has ever experienced a chronic condition, or knows someone who lives each day with pain, uncertainty and fear. Caitlin’s words do not belittle the trials present in these circumstances- they offer the much needed and oft forgotten power of hope.

“What if I’ve grown too used to this pain to let it go?” -page 16

A brief but vulnerable correspondence between two poets who don’t know the identity of the other.

The power of intentional words to process and express the deepest, darkest recesses of our souls and to be an anchor for us in the inevitable storms of life.

The opportunity to see others’ pain, sit with them in it—sometimes through it—and the vulnerability to admit our own hurts.

The acknowledgment that most people we come across in our lives are battling something we know nothing about.

While sometimes it takes authors an entire novel to get their message across, author Caitlin Miller did so in fewer pages than most. And that in itself shows us the power that intentional words can have.

Wow.🥺
This short story is POWERFUL. As the title suggests, it’s full of such poetic imagery, and manages a good plot twist even in its brevity.
CW: the topic of suicide is a crucial part of this story, so that’s something to be aware of going into it.

I am a fan of Caitlyn Miller’s writing and when I saw she had written a short story, I jumped at it.

Please do not let the length of this story fool you. In less than 10,000 words, Miller writes an amazing story with one heck of a message.

I was touched by each of the characters and the way all of the threads in the story came together in the end is nothing short of amazing.

I almost never read historical fiction, but this completely captured me. It was truly the most beautiful and impactful short story I've read - and perhaps one of the most impactful stories I've ever read. Five stars really aren't enough. Definitely going to carry this in my heart for a long while.

It's a beautiful short story, I liked the exchange of poems between the characters and how expressing their feelings allow them to heal and move on.
The story reminds you the importance of having people around you when life is difficult.

There's just something about poetry that really speaks to something deep inside you. When it's done right, it's so beautiful. I've never liked poetry, but I'm starting to think that's because I've never been able to write it😂 There's something about exploring the unique perspectives of objects and rhymes while not speaking directly about the object. Especially when it carries a story, short or long. This story may be short, but it carries a beauty through the narrative mixed with poems. I loved how it was so simple yet the characters so filled with emotion. I'm definitely glad I decided to take the time to read it, and very glad for the notes of Christianity that brought God into the story.

Mentions to suicide. Suicide attempt, nothing gory.
Mentions to abuse.

"Perspective brings a quiet truth to light, and life’s not as sharp when you remember it’s not a blade against your throat, and you breathe. You’re meant to live, not say goodbye."

@authorcaitlinmiller has been a favorite author of mine since she wrote her first story, "The Memories We Painted". The way she writes is absolutely beautiful and I love the Christian elements she weaves into her books.

"The Gray Poet" is a really short book (30 pages) but Caitlin creates such beautiful words and imagery within!! I was in tears at one point.

This beautiful book is about finding those who see you as you are and learning to turn to them and God in times of depression, loneliness and other mental health struggles.

The poetry and letters inside this book were very beautiful and somewhat personal to me as I have dealt with a little bit of depression and have also lost a loved one because of it.

I loved the message that our dark days will always become light, especially if we turn to God and those He has placed around who we trust most.
