This is the second book in the Dean Banks series featuring a young teen who is almost sixteen. Dean Banks has been selected to be the Chosen One from his Apache ancestors. His mission will be to guard The Old Dutchman mine in the Superstition Mountains. Dean and his family have recently moved here to The Red Coyote Inn in the Arizona desert. The boy does not understand what has been happening to him, but his mother, Hanna, is familiar with the shaman customs of her Apache ancestors.
Dean has been hanging out with a rough bunch of friends that he rendezvous with at night after an adventurous ride on his dirt bike. He is determined to get some answers from the Elders about his growing supernatural powers. At the cave, he meets holograms, ethereal creatures, a Gila monster, wolves, a Thunderbird, and is transformed into a superhuman creature. Then just as suddenly he is returned to his natural form. Dean must piece together many clues to solve the mystery of the cave; save his sick friend Brandy, and figure out why his recently deceased friend Robert has left him a magical rock collection. Our protagonist must rid the mountain of its evil and become its guardian.
This book is a perfect read for teen readers and adults. The language is colorful enough, but not too difficult, and the plot has enough twists and turns to ramp up interest throughout the story. The tale is a combination of legend, supernatural, paranormal, mystery and adventure. Unfortunately I did not read the first book but now feel compelled to go back and read Book One: Mysteries of the Red Coyote Inn. Highly recommend that you do the same. Comment Comment | Permalink

A great story expertly told. Dean Banks is the sixteen-year-old Chosen One, and has been given superhuman powers, such as shapeshifting into a super hawk; his destined role is to guard the Sacred Lost Dutchman Mine in the Superstition Mountains. A descendant of the Apache Nation, and however unwilling he may be to accept his destined role, he becomes engaged on a quest and mission to protect his people, and is imbued through visions with ever greater powers and insight. He learns that his duty is to prevent gold, which contains special properties, being taken from the mine. We follow him and his colleagues through a series of initiation ceremonies, struggles and adventures which keep us on the edge of our seats. He is ultimately involved in a life-and-death struggle against evil. I won’t reveal anything more of this gripping tale. Suffice to say that, further to the unceasing action, there are other fascinating ingredients such as Brandy, the super-model, with whom Dean is romantically involved, and his mother’s smarmy new boyfriend, Joe Sanchez, and the mysterious Los Tetros Labs. Check out how all these threads, and others such as Brandy’s growing illness, are brilliantly woven together by the author and lead to a rousing, nerve-wracking finale that will not disappoint you. You must read this.
Dean Banks isn't your average sixteen year old kid. The Apache gods have made him The Chosen One. He must save the Lost Dutchman Mine in Arizona from losing gold and the sacred ground in Superstition Mountains and become the mountain's guardian. He travels to a cave to get some answers from the Elders about why he was chosen. He is surprised by paranormal creatures while he turns into a hawk. He must also save his friend Brandy who is sick. He must figure out why his dead friend left him a rock collection. A tall order for a sixteen year old. Even though he is unwilling at first, he uses his superhuman powers to save his friends and the mountain. We get to see his spiritual side and his romantic side. The pace picks up with twists and turns and a life or death climax.

This is the third Lorraine Carey novel I’ve been delighted to read, the second in the Dean Banks series. And I’m ready for more!!!
Readers will enjoy this suspenseful story that blends Native American folklore set in the Arizona desert with the realistic experiences of a sixteen-year-old navigating a new school and friendships. Dean Banks is a descendant of the Apache Nation and has been given superhuman powers as the Chosen One. He uses his given powers to shape-shift himself to protect the Sacred Lost Dutchman Mine in the Superstition Mountains. The dedication he gives while helping his mother run his grandfather's motel, The Red Coyote Inn, is truly heartwarming. He does all this while learning about his Apache ancestry from his desert friend Robert and his mother. Then he’s off dirt bike riding in the night. Through solving numerous mysteries, Dean may finally understand his father's absence from his childhood.
This book checks all the boxes! What I liked best was the rich historical detail that was woven into the narrative and storytelling so artfully. Carey has crafted a supernatural thriller that will take teens and adults on an entertaining paranormal adventure brimming with action and mystery and proves again what an exceptional writer she is. I highly recommend this book and also book one, Mysteries of The Red Coyote Inn. Don’t wait. Read it TODAY!
This was my third novel by author Lorraine Carey.I was expecting that same ‘Classic’ Style of adventure, but in Out of the Ashes I found Carey had exhibited her ability to add a twist on that old ‘Classic’ style using rich Native American legends with the paranormal. Dean Banks is a teen who lives out west and is not your normal teen . He inherits the ability to have superhuman powers from an ancient Apache shaman as he alone must destroy it before it destroys a centuries old gold mine. I loved how his bravery and strong sense of spirituality were brought out in this novel. There is a touch of soft romance here that will warm your heart.. I think this is bound to be the best seller for young adults. If your child loves to read the DEAN BANKS ADVENTURES are a must read. If your kid doesn't like to read Lorraine Carey has a gift for making stories come alive. This may just be the answer to get your child to fall in love with the written word..
Dean Banks is a special young adult. In this supernatural thriller Dean has been given some special powers and a mission by the Yusan who are Apache Gods. Dean is in charge of keeping the land of the Last Dutchman Mine safe and sacred. This is a supernatural thriller that I think is going to be great fun and adventure for young adult readers and even one adults will enjoy. The author has used known superstitions and long lost tales to bring to life this story.I like how she incorporated Native American culture into tales of the past to write a story to take readers on a great journey.
Out of the Ashes: A Dean Banks supernatural... Lorraine Carey
A fast track super mystery story for lovers of the mystical spiritual and thriller shape-shifter magic. American Indian superhero, Dean Banks is chosen and the Windtalkers takes this into a whole new dimension.
This is a good completion of the story of Dean and his embracing of his heritage. It is well written for teenagers. I was felt the ending was a bit rushed. The author does a good job describing the area. I was intrigued and felt the desire to finish the story to find out the end.
