Hi Romance Fans,

My historical romances are full of heat, humor, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.

I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Romantic Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A Study in Murder released last year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been excellent. The second book, The Sign of Death, released this year and the next book, The Mystery of Albert E. Finch will release in January of 2022.

I've also been busy keeping up with my Regency/Victorian romances. Check out my latest series, The Rose Room Rogues. Four brothers who own a gambling club and find themselves caught in the net of love.

Watch for my new Highlander series, The Sutherlands of Dornoch. The first book in that series, To Deceive a Highlander, will release March 30th.

Take a look around my website and check out some of the books I write, and their lovely covers. www.calliehutton.com

Erm... it was an okay read.

Very short (which was appreciated), but the romantic story developed in no time at all. I haven’t read any of the other books there are from the series so I guess there’s bits I’m missing and that makes a difference, but this was just okay.

Grr! Lairds! ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Lady Christine Spencer is an heiress whose wicked guardian uncle is going to force her into marriage with his lewd friend and holder of his debts.
Christine escapes by knotting the sheets together, tying her homemade rope to the bed and climbing out the window, escaping to a new future thanks to Mrs Dove Lyon.
The man she’s now destined to marry is a Scott, Laird Kerrigan Lindsay. His clan has suffered setbacks with a sheep ailment, bluetongue disease, wiping out most of the clan’s herd.
He needs an heiress to help his people come good.
Unfortunately he really has little idea of how strange her circumstances are to Christine and how his clan will react to her. At Luffness Castle he announces to the clan that Christine is his wife and then hares off to Edinburgh (on business to be sure but... Christine is left knowing no-one and having to organize the Keep. for goodness sake! By now I’m ready to explode.
Of course it all came right but it just seemed to slide towards the finale. I’m not too sure about well meaning young men and their valiant much put upon ladies.
Still it was sort of cute.

Many thanks to the author and publisher.

Lady Christine Spencer needs a husband and escape London as quickly as possible. Her uncle is after her money. Laird Kerrigan Lindsay needs a wife with coin. She has the money to save his clan. Mrs. Dove-Lyon makes the match and it's a quick marriage in London and another marriage in Scotland. But her uncle isn't willing to give up.
A short read that moves quickly.
Mild descriptive sex.

Too rushed

But I do love Callie Hutton books. The meet, they marry and they fall in love. The evil uncle chases her but all is well that ends well and even uncle Carl reforms his ways! Cute short short story.

I haven't read anything from Callie Hutton since July 2023 as she has been writing a lot of Highlander/Scottish series which aren't my favorite. I have been reading her since 2016 and this is my 33rd book by her. Some of her books have very little sex and some have more descriptive sex; either way she usually has some good reads. I have really come to love her writing over the years.

This was such a short read and sometimes the characters don’t get much depth but I thought Callie did a good job with Kerrigan and Christine. It was funny how quickly they got married but I’ve read all the authors I normally read that have written Lyon’s Den books and that is how most of them were. 😊 Overall this was a cute story and good read.

Short but sweet story of two desperate people brought together by Mrs. Dove-Lyon. The story opens as Christine prepares to escape the marriage her greedy uncle arranged for her by climbing out of her bedroom window. She flees to the Lyon's Den, where she appeals to the widow for help. She needs to marry and escape London as quickly as possible.

Laird Kerrigan Lindsay desperately needs a wealthy wife. Disease decimated the flocks of sheep his clan relies on, and he needs the funds to rebuild the flocks to save his people. There is no time to waste.

Kerrigan and Christine are practical people. When Mrs. Dove-Lyon introduces them, a few moments of conversation convinces them they will deal well with each other. As a bonus, there are already sparks of attraction. The marriage happens quickly, followed by the requisite trip to the lawyer to arrange their finances. I liked the lawyer, who was kind and efficient, and arranged a a place for them to stay for a few days. Their time is cut short when Christine's uncle tracks her down and attempts to force her to return with him. I loved Kerrigan's protectiveness.

I enjoyed their journey to Scotland. Over those few days, Kerrigan and Christine had the chance to get to know each other. The drawbacks of their characters become evident as the reader discovers that Christine has no idea what will be required of her when she takes over running his home. At the same time, Kerrigan simply assumes that Christine received the typical training of most young women. Both are in for a shock.

I loved how, despite having little idea of what to do, Christine took charge right away, quickly earning the respect of Kerrigan's clan members. Meanwhile, Kerrigan was oblivious to the difficulty he left her with when he immediately left to acquire new sheep. Though he was somewhat apologetic when he arrived home, I feel like he still didn't understand how difficult it was for her. Fortunately, Christine was forgiving, and as they worked together, their feelings for each other strengthened.

But Christine's uncle hasn't given up, and trouble comes calling. The buildup to the climax kept me glued to the pages as I waited for him to strike. I liked the twist that altered the outcome, though I thought Christine's uncle got off too easily.

The epilogue was good and a nice wrap-up to the story.

5 STARS, REGENCY HISTORICAL ROMANCE

Callie Hutton has contributed to the multi-authored Series: The Lyon's Den Connected World with an exciting storyline that is well written very fast moving and has lots of relevant action. This is a 5 STARS rated read in an almost all 5 STARS Series.

A Lady needed to marry & remove herself from London with protection from her Uncle who most definitely would be hunting her down. She had climbed out of her window with pants under her skirts and the bedsheets she had knotted together tied around her waist & one of her bed post. She did fall a little bit of the way & was lucky those sheets held out, then grabbed a hack & went to see if Mrs Bessie Dove-Lyon's would see her & help her save her fortune from her Uncle. Could or would she find her a husband?

The Laird was very worried about his castle & clan so he wrote his old friend from his English College days & he suggested he get in touch with the Black Widow herself Mrs Bessie Dove Lyon's of the Lyon's Den who was known to contract marriages for couples who needed to marry for various reasons. All of their sheep had contracted a deadly viral disease and died and his people could not umeat for food or sale. Furthermore, they also depended on them to make the wool for clothing they wore & sold in Scotland and other Countries. It was their survival and with them dying he had sold off everything to keep them going &u what little crops they could afford to buy & plant for food. No, he was going to have to marry to save his people & castle and he didn't care if she was tall, fat, ugly, or whatever he would do it because he cared for the people and the land.

Two desperate people who have decided as long as there needs are met none of the usual things like looks or hair color or even are they an outside horse person that reads or one that never goes out & doesn't read books. This is a delicious read! I would have read a riot act to the man when he returned from his immediate trip to the city after they got to Scotland. Further, I would have found a housekeeper that come oversee all of those unruly clan members who worked in the house that understood how things worked in Scotland if only temporary. Loved & charmed by it Callie! More please.

The Lyon and The Lass by Callie Hutton is a simply delightful novella featuring Mrs. Dove-Lyon as she arranges a marriage between Lady Christine Spencer and Laird Kerrigan Lindsay. Lady Christine is a young heiress who has been left in the care of her uncle, who really only wants her money. In order to get it he has betrothed her to one of his oily friends and Lady Christine wants nothing to do with the obnoxious, older man. She climbs out a window and heads directly for the Lyon’s Den. Kerrigan is the head of a Scottish clan whose business of raising sheep and selling woolen goods has been decimated by disease. He has heard of Mrs. Dove-Lyon and although he is afraid of what kind of wife he’ll get, he is desperate for one with money. Both are pleasantly surprised by the match and marry immediately and set off for Lady Jessica’s man of business to see to the money. The uncle has figured it out and arrives at their borrowed townhouse the next morning, sending them fleeing on his horse. They do make it to Scotland.

I just loved this story. Some seem so forced but this one was gentle and caring, and they were the perfect match. This is not to say that they got away scot free, but the problems that confronted them were solved rapidly and their life progressed nicely. Both are good, strong characters, who kno what they want and are willing to work to get it. The setting and trope are familiar, but treated in such a way that makes you want to love them.

I was invited to read The Lyon and the Lass by Dragonblade. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #CallieHutton #TheLyonAndTheLass

*I received a free ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*

Other than wishing this could have been a little longer there wasn't really anything I did not like about this book. The first few lines draw you in and from there I looked forward to seeing what would happen next. The Lyon's Den books that are just straight-forward matchmaking are not really my favorite, but I did not mind it here. I'm not sure if there is a word or length maximum on these stories but if there is I am glad this author focused more of the story on after the wedding rather than the wager that would have gotten the characters to the altar. It's clear pretty early on that Christine and Kerrigan are pretty much made for one another - neither tends to think through a situation fully before acting, but they both come deal with whatever life throws at them. I liked that Christine quickly recognized how little experience she had in taking care of herself but adjusted to every new situation thrown her way. The part with her taking a bath by herself for the first time was pretty humorous. I loved how she took charge and established herself in her new home - she goes from being pretty openly disrespected to someone everyone speaks well of (in a pretty short amount of time too). I'm glad that they gave Rupert a second chance, but thought her uncle got off way too easily. The epilogue does a good job of letting you know what happens with each character in a very to-the-point way.

Make my own future
We have a young Lady Christine Spencer who is desperate to escape her uncle! She ties sheets together climbs out the window to escape marrying the man her uncle had picked up to split her fortune with!
She makes her way to Lyon Den to meet with Bessie and see if she can find her a husband to get out of England!
We have Laird Kerrigan Lindsay who is desperate to save his clan from further starvation since most of their sheep have perished! This is their livelihood they need to get a quick influx of money now just to survive! One of Kerrigan school chums told him of the Lyons den so he travels to London and arrives at the same time as Lady Christine!
They share a heated chemistry at their first meeting as Christine uncle is a desperate gambler and will not give up!
They quickly marry and have no trouble with the consummating of the marriage! Christine is used to several servants and has been taught household management as her mother died while she was very young!
Kerrigan basically drops her off with very few servants and they speak Scots!
I love the way Christine doesn’t give up with a filthy Castle and keep and a whole host of duties that she has never been trained in!
But her uncle has not given up he has sent someone to “find” her!
How far will the nefarious uncle and jilted groom go to steal Christine’s inheritance!
Can Kerrigan reach her in time!? It seems he has an unexpected ally! Bravo and I love the brief glimpse into their future!
I received an ARC Copy for my unbiased opinion!

An lighthearted and sweet marriage of convenience story with likeable characters, even if Christine's naive and spoilt nature made her seem awkward in some situations. Kerrigan is a cinnamon roll hero who would do anything for his clan and is very understanding and caring towards his innocent wife, but sometimes a little clueless about how an English Lady is brought up.
The plot is well written and has its farcical LOL moments, a touch of suspense and a few steamy love scenes.
Overall, an entertaining quick read!

Lady Christine Spencer is fleeing from her scheming uncle, who wants to force her to marry one of his friends in order to get his hands on her inherited fortune. Seeking help, she turns to Mrs Dove-Lyon to quickly find a suitable husband.
Laird Kerrigan Lindsay is in urgent need of money after his clan's source of income, his flock of sheep, dies of a disease. On the advice of his friend, he makes contact with the Black Widow of Whitehall and is matched with Christine. He is immediately attracted to her and gladly takes on her protection from her uncle, travelling with her back to his castle in Scotland as soon as possible.
Despite the chaotic circumstances and the new tasks, Christine soon feels at home, were it not for her uncle, who is not prepared to give up so easily…

This was such a charming and heartwarming addition to The Lyon’s Den Connected World. The story of Laird Kerrigan Lindsay and Lady Christine Spencer captured my attention from the very first page and kept me hooked till the end. With the tension of an arranged marriage, a daring escape, and a deal forged in desperation, the stakes felt real—and the romance even more so.

Kerrigan is a strong but honorable Highlander doing whatever he can to save his people, while Christine is a refreshingly brave heroine determined to take her future into her own hands. Their chemistry is immediate, but it’s the way their trust and affection grows that truly makes this a satisfying romantic journey.

Mrs. Dove-Lyon, as always, plays her matchmaking role with her signature flair, and fans of the series will enjoy another satisfying pairing brought together by her influence.

If you enjoy historical romance with a dash of adventure, reluctant alliances, and a love that blooms under unlikely circumstances, this book is for you. A fast and delightful read—perfect for fans of Highland heroes and headstrong heroines!

The Lyon and the Lass by Callie Hutton
The Lyon’s Den Connected World

Another perfect match made by Mrs. Dove-Lyon sees Kerrigan and Christine find happiness together.

What I liked:
* Christine: strong, resilient, determined, hopeful, willing to do what she must, falls in love quickly with her new husband
* Kerrigan: responsible, diligent, puts his clan first, willing to marry for money, intrigued by and easily falls in love with his new wife
* Mr. Kendall: Christine’s solicitor, helpful, wise, organized
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* Reading work by a new-to-me author that I look forward to reading again
* That Mrs. Dove-Lyon always seems to find the perfect matches when she organizes marriages
* The way Christine quickly adapted and learned to take charge
* The change in thinking one of the characters had and how it changed his life

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes

Nice addition to this series where the constant is Mrs. Dove-Lyon, owner of the Lyon's Den. These novella's are written by different authors.

I've become disenchanted with this series of late. I like Mrs. Dove-Lyon to be the same in all the stories, but that hasn't been the case. In many now she is more on the mean and uncaring side. I realize this is the take of the different author's but I want consistency with her. I bought this one because I enjoy Callie Hutton's style, and she didn't disappoint in how she portrayed her.

The MC were believable, and I enjoyed how the H assumed the h would know how to run a household, but that is far from the truth. The reality was she didn't and was like a fish out of water. But, the h slowly took charge and realized she knew more than she thought.

The ending felt rushed and abrupt, and I didn't care for how the h's uncle was dealt with.

Lovemaking within marriage, heat level 3 out of 5. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, little on romance and tad of steam.

I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase. (ljb)

I liked the overall concept of The Lyon and the Lass, but I found that I couldn't quite get sucked into the story. I wasn't connecting to the characters and I wasn't connecting to the writing.
One thing I've really enjoyed from discovering the Lyon's Den world is how each of the authors are able to craft a story that feels reminiscent of each other, like they all belong in the same world. This one just didn't match with that vibe overall.

The pairing between our MCs Christine and Kerrigan was something a little different from the norm - the moving to Scotland and the escaping from the horrible uncle. The two seemed well suite to one another post marriage, so another successful matchmaking from Mrs. Dove-Lyon, although that is really the only part that feels connected to the collection since they leave England shortly thereafter. I think it would have been nice to see some more of their life after the conclusion of what I suppose would be the 'third act conflict' as the ending felt like it just came a little abruptly.

Both main characters were easy to love, so it was extra fun to see them go from a marriage of convenience to falling in love.

Christine visits the Lyon's Den in search of a husband - and anyone will do as long as it isn't her uncle's friend. Said uncle has promised her in marriage to his friend in order to get his hands on the fortune left to her by her late father. A visit to Mrs. Dove-Lyon at the Lyon's Den solves her problem. She is matched with a Scottish Laird who needs money to see his clan through some difficult times.

Living in Scotland, Christine finds strengths and skills she didn't know she had. She must take charge of the castle and keep, and boy does she have her hands full. In true husband fashion, it seems like the Laird has been rather blind to the fact that no cleaning has been done in quite a while. Lol.

Kerrigan is a good man, though, and wants what is best for his wife and his clan. He protects her from her still scheming uncle, and works tirelessly on behalf of the families under his care.

This was an absolutely delightful story from beginning to end.

An enjoyable marriage of convenience novel, the main characters in this romance are both in a desperate situation, hence a visit to Mrs Bessie Dove-Lyon. Lady Christine has made a dramatic escape, while Laird Kerrigan is desperate to save his people from starvation. An added advantage to the match is that Kerrigan can get Christine out of England and into the wilds of Scotland before her greedy uncle can find her. There is a saying that a woman does not know how strong she is until she finds herself in hot water. Certainly, Christine, who had never had to fend for herself or immerse herself in the running of a household, discovers hidden strengths she never knew she had. When the impossible happens, loyalty comes from an unexpected source, all because of the kindness shown to a stranger. I received a copy of this entertaining novel as a gift from Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

The Lyon and the Lass: The Lyon's Den Connected World. Called Hutton

A very brave and desperate young woman, needing to marry a gentleman of her choice not forced by her dispiceable Uncle to gain her fortune for himself. She ties her bed linen climbs out of her second story window to escape her Uncle, is that desperate. Going to Bessie Dove-Lyon, to find a husband and to leave London behind her, to a new beginning. It just so happens that Laird Lindsay is seeking an heiress, to help his clan overcome it debts. He is also desperate to gain finances to repair his home, ten she's houses and replace the sheep that died due to sickness. Find each other acceptable and marry is most desirable for both parties, and then the fun begins. Love concors all, but not without tribulations.

How different authors come up with different scenarios within the Lyon’s Den genre amazes me and this one is very original! I adored Christine’s refusal to be a pawn in her uncle’s game and what she goes through to stop it. Kerrigan is such a gentle, clueless giant and so lovable! The author does a wonderful job of creating believable characters. It was an hilarious scene at the wedding consummation and I was laughing as Christine realized just what Kerrigan intended her to do at the keep and watching her grow through the process was enlightening. I did feel the climax was kept too close to the end, almost felt it was very rushed, but all in all a quick, semi-steamy and lovely story to curl up with!

I received this story for free and these are my own views.

Family, Desperation, Finding Love:
Two desperate characters meet with the help of the Black Widow Mrs. Dove Lyon and a new exciting love story begins, but what does it take for a happy ever after ending?
Of course, all does not go well for the newlyweds. There is always a villain that tries to alter things in his favor.
I really loved the hunky highlander Kerrigan and the naive Christine. I really enjoyed their journey to find and discover more than love but hope and a future for clan and family.
The conclusion has a couple of twists which I was glad to see one of them for it helped bring on a happy ending, but I really didn't care for the generosity from Kerigan and Christine that ended the story.

Christine is desperate to avoid a marriage to an aging crony of her uncles, who would give her inheritance back to her uncle, so she escapes and goes to Mrs Dove-Lyon for help. Mrs Dove-Lyon just happens to have a scottish Laird looking for a rich wife to restore his estate waiting for a wife, so on the premise he promises to take her from Britain Christine agrees.

So here's the issue, Scotland is part of Britain so the Laird won't remove her from Britain merely from England. The author obviously doesn't know about Britain at all. Book is littered with wrong words, admittedly probably spelling errors. All a bit disappointing really. Storyline a bit tired and overused, and we didn't really get to know either lead character, merely a sketch of who they were.

He is agreeing to Mary a wife and take her away from her greedy uncle in exchange for her money and a wife. He expects her to already know how to do everything. What he doesn’t realize Isa that she is to only learning to e a wife but in charge as well. Getting married is had enough bu to not know anything of the world your moving to is an extra obstacle. I enjoyed seeing the honeymoon stage of this relationship as well as the obstacles they had yo overcome in order to have a happy marriage. Well written and intriguing book.

Lady Christine Spencer needs to escape an unwanted marriage to her uncle’s buddy. Where can a young woman go to find a good match in a hurry? To the Lyon’s Den and Bessie Dove-Lyon. Laird Kerrigan Lindsey is need of a wealthy wife, quickly. He spoke to Mrs. Dove-Lyon at the suggestion of a friend, and has come to meet the wife she has chosen for him. Kerrigan and Christine take to each other at once. Hoping to get away from her uncle and his plan, they head for Scotland. The trouble doesn’t end when they arrive at Kerrigan’s home. Kerrigan is busy, and he expects Christine to take charge of the keep. Christine has no idea what to do, but instinct and determination take over. This is another entertaining story of a wonderful match made courtesy of Bessie Dove-Lyon. Kerrigan is handsome, strong, caring, and hard-working. Christine is kind, caring, and completely innocent of marriage and managing a household. She is also strong, smart, and willing to learn. When the villain(s) kidnap her, they make a big mistake. The result is a brilliant rescue and a couple of completely unexpected surprises. Great story with adventure, humor, and romance.

Change isn’t always bad……………

Another good addition to the series. The characters were well written. The class difference, the groom’s cluelessness, and the innocence of the bride made for an interesting journey. They had a friendship that quickly grew into love. This novella had your typical villains, redemption, humor, connections made through working together, light steam, love, and a HEA that could have been more detailed. There was a lot of words and time spent on the front end that I would have preferred at the end to get more insight into life in the future. The happy ending was definitely rushed.

I enjoyed the Lyon’s Den and the match that Mrs. Dove-Lyon orchestrated for Kerrigan and Christine. The match saved both of them for entirely different reasons and it quickly became a love match. Christine found herself capable of things she had never thought about before. There is danger but Kerrigan handled the situation from the most unlikely source. I really enjoyed the story, it’s well written and entertaining. It’s a great addition to the Lyon’s Den series and worth reading.

Christine is on the run from her evil uncle who's trying to force her to marry one of his lecherous friends. She knows who can help her - Mrs Dove-Lyon. Kerrigan is a Scottish Lord who has been going through tough times with his clan. He needs a wife.

They end up being very well matched and marry immediately. Once they end up at his castle, Christine realizes how neglected the castle is, and how it needs someone to take charge. Even though she has no experience, she thrives as the new wife of the Laird.

The perfect match arranged by Mrs. Dove-Lyon for Christina and Kerrigan. The story does a good job showing the differences and prejudices between Scotland and England yet it doesn't take over the story line. Christina is a pappered lady from England who takes control of her life and fortune by marrying a Scottish Laird. Their characters were well matched and beautifully detailed. The villain in the story was truly one you will! we to punch. And some of the secondary characters are a bit interesting. Beautifully ended with a great wrap up epilogue.

Although this historical romance is part of the Lyon's Den world,  it is only where our lead characters meet. The majority of the story  is what happens afterwards.

Our heroine has a lot more courage and determination than even she knew.

Our hero is a Scottish laird in desperate need of funds. He gets a much better bargain than he hoped for.

There is a lot of excitement, adventure, and some danger in this slightly steamy read. Fabulous characters and a crumbling castle set the scene.

Good fun.

Entertaining Regency Romance

She needs to escape her uncle; he needs a wife to fill his clan’s coffers. Will it be a match made in heaven? Christine and Kerrigan had Mrs. Dove-Lyon, a most excellent matchmaker, on their side. However, they will still have challenges to overcome. Christine's uncle is not going to give up so easily. He wants her money. Will she succeed in escaping his clutches? Is Scotland far enough?

This is an entertaining story. I recommend it to those who like Regency romance with suspense. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I was so pleased to see that Callie Hutton wrote a novella in the Lyons Den series. I really enjoyed her book about two desperate people, who put on their big boy and big girl pants and do what needs to be done. Kerrigan is a laird who needs to marry for money post haste. Christine needs to wed a man of her own choosing and to get out of Dodge.
They are wed as an ends to a means and then get to know each other in a condensed amount of time.
