This Sam Capra novel involved a crime family and it flew by as fast as I could read it. I will continue with the series. The regular characters are good, and the new situations this ex-CIA guy finds himself in are fairly dynamic.

I found this fast paced thrill a minute story to be preposterous . That some one so young ( mid twenties) could be that experienced , knowledgeable , and savvy seemed more than a stretch, let alone the situations he got into and out of at a rapid pace.

This one lacked......... something........ maybe it was the audio narrator..... he also lacks....... something....... I listen to them because I love the Sam Capra character, however, this one could have been better.

Sam Capra doesn't have a lot of friends, so when Steve Robles is murdered outside his bar in Miami, Sam vows to punish the assassins. This hunt takes him to the Varelas' family and the young woman Steve was trying to protect, Cordelia Varelas, the youngest of the three Varelas siblings. Cori's twin, Edwin was kidnapped four years ago and never seen again. As Sam penetrates deeper into the family, he uncovers a lot of secrets no one wanted to have come out. Rey Varelas, when he started FastFlex air transport, did a lot of illegal things. Now, the business has transitioned into legitimate air transport, but the underside still remains lucrative; it is being run by Zhanna, an adopted Varelas sibling. Galo, the oldest sibling runs the legitimate side. No one really is as they appear on the surface; lies and secrets are a way of life. A few too many slick transitions for my taste, but Abbott writes an adrenaline-laced read.

Inside Man by Jeff Abbott is the fourth book in the Sam Capra series which is exhilarating as much as it is exciting. Sam, a former CIA agent - has a debt, a debt of gratitude - to be repaid. Steve Robles, one of his closest friends, had once saved him and his family. He is determined to repay him in full. But before he could make good on his promises, Steve is dead, shot in the rain outside his bar in Miami.

Sam Capra is determined to find the killer and get justice for his murdered friend. With not much to go on except the young woman whom Steve met just before he was shot, Sam begins his investigation. Assuming the name Sam Chevalier, he soon he finds himself intruding deep into the affairs of the Varelas, sneaking into their compound in Puerto Rico, where Steve used to work a security job for frightened Cordelia Varela. The head of the Varela family Rey Varela is dividing his less than legitimate empire between his three greedy heirs. What Sam unraveled will undoubtedly destroy the Varela family but also threatens to destroy Sam himself.

Author Jeff Abbott is a master at hard boiled suspense whose novels are published in twenty languages around the world and include the massive international bestseller Panic. He won the International Thriller Writers Award in 2012 for his novel The Last Minute. With Inside Man, he has continued his trademark suspense novel which is gripping and solid. He has added a touch of romance and Sam’s background story to add flavor to this hugely entertaining and enjoyable story.

I received this e-galley free from Net Gallery and Grand Central Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for the opportunity.

Well, Sam Capra is back. This time he has to change his name to Sam Chevalier, one he has used in the past during his CIA days. This time, one of Sam's best friends, who is like a father figure to him asks him "who are you really, I need your help". Because he is trying to get Sam to help him in his latest adventure. Sam won't elaborate because he wants to be out of that business and before he knows it, his friend is dead. Shot in front of his bar, after meeting an attractive woman.

The story is set and Sam is after the killers of his friend and the man who saved his and his family's life.

The telling of the past story about the "burnt man" and the lessons he was taught by him contribute to the title of this book. I loved the connections included in the story.

Once again, Jeff Abbott has come through with a great story that will definitely keep you entertained and make reading this book worth your while.

It's a great story that I could not put down and was so glad to get to read this. This one is definitely worth your time and money!

I received this book from Goodreads for an honest review.
Steve Robles is one of Sam Capra’s closest friends. When he is murdered outside of Sam’s bar, there is only one choice for Sam. Find out who killed him and make them pay. Using the deep-cover alias Sam Chevalier, he runs headlong into the powerful Varela family. He decides to poke a stick at a hornet nest and falls head-first into a lion’s den. But, Sam Capra never gives up because he knows the Varela family is somehow involved in Steve’s death and keeps prodding and searching for clues.
This is a fast paced thrill-ride though the underworld of government sponsored smuggling that keeps you clinging to your chair. In a multiple plot-twisting finale, the Varela family crumbles to dust with Sam looking at new questions to answer.
This is my first Sam Capra novel. I think that reading the series from the beginning would have made this story more powerful. There are multiple questions and references to his past that a back-story would have answered. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed the action and intrigue and look forward to reading the series from the beginning.

This was a much anticipated 4th book in this series for me! Sam Capra's life has settled into bar owning. Then his friend Steve is murdered right outside his bar and he is going to find out who and why. Steve was protecting a beautiful woman who has her own secrets. Sam goes undercover to avenge his friend's death and winds up in the middle of a successful and dangerous family. His investigation might be their undoing, and his!
I've loved Sam Capra from the first book. His story is just so sad...and involved. This time it is friendship that drives him to put himself in danger. He assumes his alias Sam Chevalier and goes undercover in a dangerous family. The action in this book is non-stop and the adventure is awesome! Once you start the book, you won't want to put it down. If you haven't read the first 3, I would (they are great books) and then this one, but this one can stand alone.
It was a 4/5 for me. I couldn't wait to read this one!
Thank you to the publisher for the review copy of this book (via netgalley). I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

Warning: Inside Man ends with a cliffhanger. Know going in.

Pro: Fast-paced with a likeable main character. Overall, a good "weekend" mystery/thriller

Con: The action jumps the shark in the last quarter. Major questions remain unanswered, in addition to that cliffhanger ending.

Recommend: Well, I think you need to be invested in the series to make sense of its background noise. I do plan to continue on with Sam Capra, though I'd be happier without the author's need to leave the reader hanging.

This is the fourth run of Sam Capra and I have to say, it's about three too many.

Capra is an uninspiring main character with a less-than-compelling motivation. He whines about his son, yet spends no time with the child. Every three chapters, Abbott wants to remind us that he's conflicted about leaving the boy in the care of Leonie, so he throws in a paragraph or two about how bad he feels about it.

Jeff Abbott is a terrific thriller writer, but he's gone down the wrong path with Capra.

This reminds me of Reacher, by Lee Childs.
So, on the the Reacher scale, from 'remotely possible' to 'out-right impossible',
this one goes full ORI.
But, it's a fun, fast, good read.
I'll read more Jeff Abbott.

Notes while reading:

Sam Capra #4, but my first.
Ex CIA, maybe ex Round Table.
Has some safe houses, disguised as bars.
When the flame of righteousness burns, watch out bad-guys.
Good friend Steve is gunned down; but why? And who?

Quite formulaic till 2/3 of the way through then the plot twists and turns and snakes around, raising it from "meh okay" to "yep, I enjoyed that". You kinda know what you're getting with Jeff Abbott- and for that I wasn't disappointed.

I don’t know if what I am typing is considered spoilers so I’m erring on the side of caution here.

So here's the skinny ... Sam Capra is a bitch. A whiny, conscience burdened, STUPID, trusting, SHORT SIGHTED bitch. I absolutely can NOT accept him as a former CIA operative. I CAN accept him as a desk jockey working at the CIA who accidentally stumbled into some things and just keeps stumbling through all of the other books. An UNTRAINED desk jockey straight out of college who barely knows how to shoot a gun and has minimum people reading skills AND trusts everyone but the people trying to kill him (unless they promise not to kill him of course).

I can't imagine that a former CIA operative, even one who only played roles to gather information, would be as unprepared for life as Sam is. This is the 4th book and I have read the previous 3 ... he is quite clearly not getting any better. I struggle to understand how he NEVER sees the betrayals coming … he is always jumped or handcuffed or kidnapped or tortured … he doesn’t seem to have the ability to really think things through. He doesn’t even consider the possibility that he is being betrayed, he just tells himself he’s being paranoid (completely ignoring those CIA instincts) and then BAM, he’s a victim ... AGAIN!!

I will read the last book because I usually like everything but Sam ... but I felt it necessary to express my strong and uncomplimentary opinions of Sam.

Oh and I knew after the 1st book that the brother was still alive ... he was far too prevalent in the books to be just a memory.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Maybe it wasn't a great idea to re-read books 1-3 in the Sam Capra series before reading this one. I might be experiencing a little burnout so this book only gets 3 stars.

In a nutshell, Capra gets involved with a prestigious family and tries to unravel the multitude of secrets they keep from one another. This is all to further his own purpose of getting to the bottom causes of a death of a loved one. Like the previous books, Capra has to rely on his wits to get out of sticky situations and (apparently) always says and does the right thing(s) to stay undercover. I found this to be very similar to the previous installments UNTIL page 296 when HOLY CRAP!! WHAT?!

Page 296 was worth the wait. The rest of the book was so interesting and fast-paced, I couldn't put it down! I'll be reading book 5 in another week or so, just because I have a compulsion to complete every series I read, but I am hoping it is more like the very end of this book rather than the same-old-same-old "Capra to the rescue!" as always.

Sam Capra is just minding his own business at one of his bars in Miami when suddenly, his friend is murdered just outside. Same cannot just sit by and not react, so true to his nature, he not only chases down the assailants, but he keeps digging to see who they worked for and upon the way, uncovers a family tied up in a struggle with some evil clients. The round circle is always there to support Sam, but usually only when it benefits them. Now, Sam is leading the charge on his own and gets entangled with the Varela Family - Cori, Galo, Kent, Zhana, Ricky, Edwin - all tied up in a freight moving company that has a lucrative underside! Sam pushes to keep finding the answer of who is pulling the strings on the Varela family and who is leaking information from inside the family. He finds himself in a precarious situation with an undercover prison and eventually, Mila, his Round Circle boss, gets him some new information that is very exciting to this series!!

Sam Capra is hanging out in Miami, running his bar, when his friend Steve Robles, who once saved his life, is gunned down after a meeting with a mysterious woman. Sam follows the shooters, determined to find out who killed Steve and why.

The chase leads him into the world of Miami's ultra-rich Varela family, where everyone has secrets that Sam must untangle to get to the truth.

4 stars for the action and intrigue, including the big twist at the end, but the Varelas didn't quite work for me. Too many coincidences that Sam just happened to stumble on, and he made such a mix of terrible and brilliant decisions. Also, the stakes weren't as high as when Sam was searching for his son, and the action wasn't as much fun with Mila mostly on the sidelines. Excited to read the next one, though!

I like Sam for the most part in all the books, but I love Mila more. Sam Capra is the anti-Jack Reacher, he cares to a fault and ’boom’, he fighting the bad guys. Although, I have not reviewed the first three books (I still may), Sam Capra is a winner, a bit whinny about his personal issues, but still a winner. However, in every book in the Sam Capra series, the villains have been amazing, they are calm-cool, like Hans Gruber or Hannibal Lecter. The Inside Man’s best villain was short lived; Nanny was quite the evil-doer. Nevertheless, I have enjoyed the series. I am craving more Mila.

I enjoyed Jeff Abbott's style of writing very much.
When I opened the book and saw that it was 380+ pages,
I was apprehensive.
HOWEVER, his style is simple, with short chapters
and it moves along quickly.
ALSO, it was not graphic like a James Patterson book.

I was happy that it was NOT inundated with vulgarity.
I enjoyed the story and was always happy to begin another
chapter on a subsequent day.

I really liked this. It's intense, and there's some torture which is something I don't like in books, but in this one it worked alright. The torture section isn't too long and it's not as depressing as some other books.

This book is a tragedy.
Literally. It's a Shakespearean tragedy.
It's King Lear.

I should have caught it WAY before I did, which was around the 40% mark. I mean one of the characters is named Cordelia. And her father has a vast empire, and is slowly losing his mind, and he gives his empire to Cordelia's two siblings.
Oh, and Cordelia had a twin brother named Edmund.
Like this book TELEGRAPHS that it's King Lear, and it's still really, really good.

There are some really good action sequences, and there's betrayal and deaths all over the place and it's just a very good action thriller. It's just that it's an action thriller that is also a Shakespearean play.

I liked this for the most part. Some of the stuff about fighting and murder and torture were more intense than I like. It's much darker than the stuff I usually read. I mean my favorite authors are Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Jasper Fforde. I'm not a "dark and brooding" type of reader. But this was still a very good thriller about a somewhat unlikeable dude that gets the job done.

I'll probably check out some of the other Sam Capra books, if for no other reason than to see if they're also Shakespeare plays.

First time reader of J. Abbott but have now ordered his next book. He is that good. I thought the "thriller" title was far fetched until half way through the story, when it did earn that title. I thought wow, how you going to get out of this one Sam? This was a Sam Capra number four in the series. Sam Capra owns a number of bars around the world. Just a simple bartender. Maybe, maybe not.

This is my favorite in the series so far. I think Jeff Abbott is hitting his stride finally and this novel hangs together well. Sam Capra delves deep into the Varelas family who he suspects were behind the murder of his friend. Rather than good guys and bad guys being easy to distinguish, in this book you can't always tell which is which and that adds to the suspense.

For some reason this storyline was my favorite and I raced through the book, excited for every page turning twist and rooting for Sam's success infiltrating a family with an "underside" to their legitimate shipping business. I also couldn't wait to start the next (and last) Sam Capra book, The First Order.

It's hard to believe so many people enjoyed this book. I've read others in the Capra series and they seemed to have at least a thread of believability. This book has none, and I can't finish it, it's so absurd.

Another reviewer summed up this book with one word, preposterous.
