Jo has always felt connected to the Appalachian mountains. It’s why she became a park ranger. And it’s why, when an unavoidable asteroid is headed for Earth, she decided to spend her final hours hiking to her favorite place; the top of Mount Mitchell. She just doesn’t realize Mitchell wants to mount her in return.
Mitchell spent eons on earth, until Jo set foot on him. Then his consciousness finally burst forth. Every moment spent together seems to bring him closer to life, feelings, and to her. She is all that he can think about, and he’d love to show her every hard inch of himself.
Will Jo and Mitchell be able to reach their peaks before the asteroid hits? Or will the world end before they get their happy endings?
My Date With a Mountain is part of The Sentient Object Calendar Series, a shared series curated by some of your favorite off-the-wall Biblio Barbie, Dakota Cockaday, Holly Wilde, Luna Cantrip, Nicole Parker, Sylvia Morrow, Thea Masen, Unfortunate Reads, and Vera Valentine. It is meant for readers 18 and over who are ready to embrace a heightened experience with some unusual holidays.
It's the end of the world, so Jo has gone to face death at her favourite place—the mountains. Or rather: one specific mountain. One that happens to be sentient...and to recognise Jo...and to be very invested in Jo.
Now. Because the content warnings are probably my favourite part of books like this one, here's the list for My Date with a Mountain: Claustrophobic scenes, caves, climbing, heights, stalactites/stalagmites, stuff that would definitely give you a UTI (7).
I'll add to that: bad science; bad understanding of the timeline of asteroid disasters; sentient inanimate (but actually very animate) objects that are willing and able to kill for the object of their obsession and see nothing wrong with that; questionable resolution of bad science; probably some other things that I'm forgetting about because I'm stuck on bad science
Let's accept that I'm going to try to logic this book out (this cannot be done, but go with it) and talk dinosaur-extinction-level asteroids. Spoilers ahead. I ran this by ChatGPT, because frankly, I care enough to ask ChatGPT but not enough to dig deeper into this (or to ask ChatGPT for sources); feel free to consider this to be also bad science and do your own research. But ChatGPT confirmed my suspicions: first, that a dinosaur-killing asteroid that triggered a dust cloud and ensuing ice age could wipe out all life on Earth...but not necessarily. And not immediately. So when Jo goes up a mountain to die at her favourite place, it's more likely that (unless the asteroid hit close enough that Jo's at ground zero) she's just going to be watching the beginning of the apocalypse from the mountain. She might die right away...or, more likely, she might be caught in an earthquake triggered by the impact, or have to hike back down the mountain and into a world unlike anything she's ever known. If she survived that, it would take days to months for the real fallout (food chain collapse) to begin. Longer for survivors to face mass famine, civil war, etc.
The upshot: This asteroid will end the world as she knows it, but it might be a quick death...or she might have the next few years to struggle unprepared through the apocalypse before dying anyway.
And what if...say...a mountain somehow opened up and swallowed the asteroid whole? Well, again, this is ChatGPT science and thus questionable, but ChatGPT noted that an asteroid of this magnitude would be equivalent to a billion Hiroshima bombs, and all of that energy has to go somewhere. So: instead of a dust cloud and ensuing ice age...Jo's probably about to face an enormous volcanic explosion instead. And a surface collapse. And maybe a rupture of tectonic plates...oh, and maybe a volcanic winter anyway.
So is it nice that her animate-inanimate-object boyfriend can magically prevent an asteroid strike? Sure! But I think the book is maybe best read as Jo's dying fever dreams in her last minutes after the asteroid strikes and earthquakes rumble across the world and she's trapped under a falling tree or something.
The world is ending, so Jo goes to her favorite mountain. A mountain who has slowly gained sentience with every visit from Jo. And she bangs the mountain.
I’m not much of an outdoorsy girl, but this book gave me an appreciation for the natural beauty of mountains. And also maybe the hots for them? I love the silly concept that somehow became a really sweet and heartwarming story!
This was a super quick and unique read! I would have never imagined a sentient object romance with a mountain of all things. It definitely gets points for being a first for me. It was quick, interesting, steamy and fun with a bit of angst due to the ticking clock of the world. Apparently the world is about to end and Jo wants to spend her last hours with the mountain she loves. He turns out to be sentient and eager to please. I would have loved to have more lore behind Mitchell’s sentience and how he became to be. But other than that, I had a good time! The spice was great and new, which is hard to come by nowadays. I can definitely appreciate what this series is doing!
Okay, this was so fun! I've heard about the sentient object calendar books on Bookstagram, so when I got an invite to arc-read My Date With a Mountain, I jumped at it. It did not disappoint. I've never smiled so much reading a romance as I did with this. Mount Mitchell was so damn romantic, a wordsmith really! and Jo was the right amount of fuck yeah and wtf is happening here. The end of the world setting added a nice sense of urgency and need for comfort and the ending felt so right. Overall if you're a fan of funny chapter titles, spicy mountain time and shorter light-hearted reads My Date With a Mountain has got what you need.
Imagine finding out that a giant meteor is about to wipe out everything you know on Earth. So, you take one last trip to your favorite mountain, hoping to connect with nature before the inevitable…
This story is funny, cute, and spicy—I was completely hooked and couldn’t put it down! Who would’ve thought you’d meet your perfect man on a mountain—literally as the mountain itself?
If you love hiking, cozy vibes, and a touch of spice, this book is for you. A swim in the lake before the end of the world? Turns out, it might just lead you to your soulmate.
With the end of the world upon her, Jo wants to be where she's happiest. Mount Mitchell has always been her favourite place. But instead of watching the Earth get hit by meteor, Jo gets hit on by Mount Mitchell himself, who came alive when she first stepped a foot on his hiking paths. And the following collision leads to lots of pleasure and the end of the world can take a back seat... Another fabulous SO novella in the series. I was wondering how this one would work out and BOY did it WORK OUT!! 🥵 Go start this series for amazing quick, fun reads by multiple authors.
Another delightful addition to this already phenomenal series. I'm sure you've found yourself wondering a time or two, "Golly gee whiz I do love nature. I wonder what would happen if...." Then this is the book for you! A lonely, single naturalist facing the end of the world and a mountain full of green grass, clear streams and rock hard caverns come together in a love meant to save the world! Hilarious and epically hot
This novella definitely entertained! I wasn't sure what to expect with this story, but Luna Cantrip has an incredible way of writing that makes you cheer on the love and bond between a human and a sentient mountain, hoping for their HEA. If you're looking for a quick and cozy read with a touch of spice, this is the novella for you!
If you’re looking for a good time, look no further than your closest National Park (results may vary). This was so much fun. It’s quirky, sure, but also downright romantic. Oh my gosh, the way Mitchell talks about Jo is swoon worthy. It’s the same with Jo; she clearly feels deeply for Mitchell, right from the start. I’m rooting for these guys.
Listen. Y’all say what you want, but with the state of the world today, I need something fun and light and silly… and Luna Cantrip never fails me. Not even once has she failed to pull my attention and keep it the whole way through, and not once has she not brought a smile to my face. Keep doing what you’re doing Luna!!
This was definitely an interesting and weird book. It definitely made me question some things about myself and I don't entirely hate that lol. If your looking for an interesting read and wanting to question yourself, then definitely check out this quick read.
I love it! All of Luna Cantrip's books are adorable, fun, and very spicy. This one is no different. This read is very fun. I absolutely enjoyed it, couldn't put it down.
Who doesn't want a mountain-man. No not a silly human a literal mountain. This was fun, spicy and so cute! If the world was ending this is how I'd want to go. A mountain boulders deep inside me in mother nature.
Luna already enchanted me into being a loyal fan with her monster romances, but now that she's dabbling in sentient romance? Holy $sh!t. I am in heaven!
Keep them coming, Luna. Because while I am in NO way, shape, or form a hiker, I'd gladly get stuck inside a sentient mountain that wanted to bring me some pleasure. (tee hee).
