The Light of the Spell: Book One

Rate this book
Wren Gibbs has always been an outcast while living in Black Rivers, the merchant town to the east of the nation of Arnica. Her father figure, Lionel Gibbs, brought her in to his home to keep her safe when she was young, but did not anticipate how she would be received by the town. While Wren is strong-willed and quite stubborn, she fights a daily battle for acceptance and respect from the community, to which only a handful of citizens have opted to show her any. Although her friends are few in number, their loyalty and persistence have allowed her a welcome reprieve from the disapproving looks and jeering insults she receives any time she steps out of her home.

After an attempted coup to dethrone the king of Arnica failed, those who had been involved blame Wren for the death of their leader, Seth Tanner, and do so openly. Feelings of animosity toward her only grew when the disappearances began. As the tension intensified to a nearly unbearable level, a new presence catalyzes a series of events that change the course of, not only Wren's future, but the future of all of Yu'e.

The Light of the Spell is set in the mythical world of Yu'e, a place where creatures live alongside humans in relative peace. Yet, a great war looms on the horizon and threatens to awaken a darkness that had once been sealed away long ago. A war that will impact the lives of everyone within the realm if it were to take hold or fester.

Can Wren and her friends stop it before it begins? Can she overcome her external and internal demons in time to fulfill her role in the prophecy?

Only reading will tell.

Spoiler free review: Well written, and such an expansive and interesting fantasy world. So much to explore in future books, other series set here, etc. Wren is an incredibly interesting main character, and her actions aren’t always predicable to the reader, which keeps us guessing. All secondary characters/side characters were also likable, which I feel is rare in most books. I was almost as invested, if not as invested, in their backgrounds and stories as I was with Wren’s - especially Elliott and where her path will lead in future books.

The relationship between Wren and Lionel is so pure and strong, and he is everything to her that Arobynn should have been to Celaena if he wasn’t an awful person (TOG). I am so eager for more of Lionel’s story as well, both his past and new adventures going into book two, especially with how book one ended and where each character was/is going. I also NEED more Lionel and Elliott!!!

Unique magic system and the existence of humans and other creatures. Naming conventions of creatures solely of the author’s own making and solid and thoughtful reasoning for every single one. When I read the quote below, it was an aha moment for both the book title and of the naming of what Wren is. I loved that and felt it was a demonstration of the cleverness of the author and how much thought went into each and every piece of this book and world it takes place in.

“They are called a spell because they are a living, breathing incarnation of the power of the gods, just as lightning is the ultimate power that any earthbound creature can use.”

Can’t wait for book two (and beyond).
