Preface

It gave a good insight into the way art has evolved along with snapshots of what has been done to either preserve or condemn art monuments. Ex:

-Napoleon did not blow up the Sphinx nose. Myth. The nose was already damaged before Napoleon got to set foot in Egypt.
-the French government thought it was a good idea to add air conditioning to a the Lascaux cave (knowing the French government that was definitely a way to deviate money to corrupt politicians bank accounts 🙄). Then to try reverse the irreparable damage they did to it by doing that, they build a fake cave with exact replications of the drawings. Nice right? Wrong! Guess where the parking lot is located at? IT IS AT THE TOP OF THE ORIGINAL CAVE! All that widget and rumble must be good for the delicate system.

The book would have benefited from some heavy editing; I’m no Grammar Nazi but the mount of errors was jarring for a almost $200 dollar textbook. If I’m paying copious amounts for things that can be easily condensed into PowerPoints (given the few pages and the lack of a more in-depth analysis pertaining to college textbooks) or googled in simpler terms, I would like for them to at least be pristine, if not 100% “perfect”. Plus, the material used to make the book is extremely cheap. The pages bled if you use highlighters. I barely used the textbook and the cover is falling off. I had to use tape to keep it together- atrocious considering I’m extremely careful with my books and this one was not different.

I give it a low 2.5 star because of the information and the fact that it was useful to the class. I cannot recommend it in good conscience, however, due to all the issues mentioned above.

Not bad for a forced read for class but the throughout the whole thing I was like, did she have an editor? All the missing commas and other mistakes bothered me but it wasn’t to the point where it took away from my learning, so 4 stars.

An assigned reading during my time at university, but one I proudly had to purchase and keep on my shelf. A great and digestible breakdown of art history over centuries to help ignite the fire of any art-lover’s passion for how art came to be throughout human history.
