After a hush-hush trip to Ancient Rome, Orlando is clearly disturbed by what he's seen, so when he decides to go back, with a team of volunteers, Mel loyally signs up. It looks as if this will be the mission of her dreams, but in the cruel, decadent world of Nero's Roman Empire, her fantasies crumble. Who is the mysterious girl gladiator Orlando seems to be trying so hard to protect? How did he come to meet her? Is his concern purely professional, or is it something more?
Annie grew up as an only child in the English countryside during the 1950s. Her father was not always around but when he was, he would tell her fantastical stories, often with her as the principal character. Annie missed him and his stories, which led her to the fantasy section at her local library, thus sparking life-long love of fiction.
After undertaking jobs such as waitressing, cleaning and factory work, Annie went on to study at University of Warwick and soon started writing.
Annie lives in Norfolk. She has three children, Anna, Reuben, and Maria (the inspiration for the first “Angels Unlimited” book, “Winging It”) and two grandchildren, Sophie and Isabella.
I love that this is set in Ancient Rome - one of the most interesting time periods. And I like that this is a more realistic view than most have. Great plotline with interesting characters, and real evolution for Mel.
I really love this series of books, they're so different and imaginative; a teenage angel time traveling and battling the demons while still having the usual teen problems! This was the 3rd book I read, I did like it, but other books were better I think. In this book, they travel back in time to ancient rome. Mel's crush, Orlando, comes too, and falls in love with a female Gladiator. I think the book makes you think about how it would've been in those times, and how cruel gladiators were treated and what it was like in the fighting arena. This book was funny, especially when Mel and Lola (her best friend) are trying to get their roman clothing on! A great read.
Edit: Turns out I'm too lazy to go back to this in order to review it.
Just my thoughts on the ending: I expected that reveal with the waitress, and I think it's nice that Mel experienced character growth in this book even though she's still a WIP (aren't we all?). I think it shows that even in the afterlife, she's learning and growing as an individual.
This book did ham up her fixation on Orlando if only to make her personal growth past her crush clearer to the reader, but hey this is a kids book, hamming it up might be necessary! It's good she's over him, she has more chemistry with Brice anyway 🤭

I love this book so much. It's probably actually one of my fav books of all time. It's probably up there with Crown of Midnight. And I loved CoM. Speaking of CoM, I totally need to read HoF.
I don't even know what's next... Yeah. Love this book.
One of the better ones, I felt. I love the feel of these books, how they're written for kids but the historical detail, while dumbed down a bit, is still really fascinating.
Příjemné andělské čtení. O něco napínavější a akčnější, než předchozí díly, ale pořád naprostá oddechovka, u které člověk nemusí přemýšlet. Jasně, pro děti, ale koho to zajímá? :-)
