No Rest for the Wicked

Rate this book
He is sick.

He does not know it.

Generations upon generations of illness

Only to be exacerbated by the madness.

He will never be rid of it.

The madness is as fused

As the flesh of his bones,

The gold in his nest.

Time is an enemy,

But it is time that heals.

Wounds forgotten but scarred in the heart

That barely beats for itself.

But it beats for her,

the one who is to rip him apart.

The love he holds dear will kill and save him,

Will redeem and lay him to waste.

Every tear she sheds

Will be returned to him tenfolds.

Willful wrongs

Cannot be escaped.

The way out is back inside, mad dragon king.

Will he let fate control him

Or will he take control of his fate?

He is not the savior here.

He is the villain.

But there is hope for him

Like there is for all.

Your hope is in the hands

Of the savior.

The enemy.

Another amazing book written by Kate. I love all her books and her unique writing. I love being a part of the Kult and to enjoy these books before they are released.

We pick up right where book 1 left off and I loved how this one progresses. It was a literal roller-coaster with all the background information and all the things that are explained. Every other chapter made me go.....WTF... and oh this makes so much sense. I cannot get enough of Daddy Khal and badass Branwyn. They are such a good match. Seeing Khal evolve and develop into someone Branwyn needed not only physically but emotionally, was truly beautiful and had me in tears some times. Their story is truly something I will remember. But also the scene with them in Khal's dragon form....and the 👅 was exactly what I needed 🔥🔥🔥

Now I need Rotten to the Core (Book 3) now. I need to know EVERYTHING!!!!

Fave Quotes:

"I hated to admit it, but the fire between us never banked. Not even for one second."

“I love you like this. So open, so helpless for me to ruin.”

“You bury me, my Khali’ya. Even if you cannot carry life in you, you are more than enough for me.”

This book was a lot — and I mean that in the best, most “I-need-to-lie-down-after-this” kind of way. I had a full-on love/hate relationship with Khaliv and Branwyn, especially after the first book, but this one took it to a whole new level. One minute, I was like, “Yes, I love you both, your connection is hot as hell, I get it, I’m in,” and the next, I wanted to throw the book across the room because one of them was being absolutely insufferable. Sometimes Branwyn made me want to scream. Sometimes Khaliv made me question whether he had two brain cells to rub together. And just like that, I was back to swooning. I could never fully settle into my feelings for them — all the way to the final page — and honestly, I still don’t know if that was brilliant or just emotional chaos.

Also, this book is dense. Like, dense! The world-building, the lore, the timelines — it’s all layered and rich and a little overwhelming if you’re not in the right headspace. My ADHD had me backtracking more than once just to make sure I actually understood what was going on. You cannot coast through this one. It demands your attention. But the payoff? Worth it.

And let’s talk trauma. These characters have been through it! There were moments that made me want to scream — not because the writing faltered, but because of how deeply these characters were shaped by their pasts. It was painful, raw, and at times just downright brutal. But it all made sense by the end, and it added so much depth to who they are.
Note: This book contains themes of trauma and emotional intensity, so I’d recommend checking the trigger warnings before diving in.

Now, for the ending: yes, there’s a happy ending. Kind of. It gave me enough closure to breathe again, but I’m still side-eyeing you for the next book like, “What fresh heartbreak are you gonna serve me next?”

Bottom line: this book took me on a ride — frustrating, intense, dark, twisty, and emotionally messy. But also romantic, and in the end, pretty gratifying.

A huge thank you to K. Sparrow, Kate D. Pirate for the ARC — this is my honest review.

No Rest for the Wicked was a fantastic continuation of The Dreadwyng Chronicles and final exploration of Khaliv and Branwyn's story.
Let me start off by saying this book is everything it claims to be. The subject matter is HEAVY. Its fast paced and leaves little room to breathe before the next heavy topic or horrific plot twist smacks you in the face. We are given a lot more answers about Khaliv and how he came to be the Mad Dragon King, and the topics of his traumatic past get very dark. This is a book I only recommend reading if you are in a good mental headspace and prepared to dive into its depths and not break the surface until the end.
I absolutely devoured this book. Its fast-paced nature and twisting plot kept me engaged so much that I found it difficult to put the book down at the end of the day. Khaliv and Branwyn are hilarious, infuriating, and absolutely delectable. One moment I wanted to smack someone and the next I would be kicking my feet with giddiness. I found myself caught in a rotating door between hating them one moment and loving them the next. Their relationships were as tumultuous for me as it is for them, and I think thats what makes this book so fantastic and well written. No Rest for the Wicked is so immersive emotionally and mentally that the lines get blurry between reality and the pages of the book, and you feel as the characters feel with every page turn.
There were moments within the book that I did wish a darker topic would be explored just a little bit more so that I as the reader could get the same closure or feel the same resolve as the characters but overall this book was incredibly well written, immersive and I am sad to see Branwyn and Khalivs story come to a close.
I can't wait to learn more about other characters within the Dreadwyng Chronicles world and to see where the future books take the plot.

Holy moly... So Aethys was a lie? I mean the spice and dragon c*ck is great, but hold on!!! The mental manipulation that happened here, I feel like I'm insane too. I had to go back and re-read the first book and can't believe how many clues have slipped by.

Stuff I feel uncomfortable with was Khaliv (whether he knows it or not) has grapey tendencies. I mean I can understand with his past and all, but for fucks sake you can't really have everything lol Although this is more or less realistic. Abuse effects always seep in one way or another.

And also, ew inc3st.

I don't know about you, but I always picture Tootsie as a gigantic whippet dog, not a reptilian canine.

I really feel like Winnie and Khal need more books. They are such a uniquely different, deeply intertwined beings seeking healing in their own messed up, codependent way. Overall, this was a great duet.

I can't wait for Vithos and Angel's story! And Father Grimm, too. He sounds yummy.

!!ARC!! !!SPOILERS!! I feel like Khaliv is hiding a very big secret from Bran and it’s honestly scaring me. As much as I love Khaliv and Branwyn, I do believe that they need to put themselves in each other’s shoes. His niece?!?! Kate.. please don’t do this to me omg 😭😭. Clones?? Uncles and nieces? This book is taking turns I didn’t see coming. WE GOT DRAGON HONEY’S POV!!!! I’m absolutely loving this omfg. I love Bran & Khal as much as we all do but they do need to work on their communication skills, even if they’re scared. Khaliv let Bran put a collar on him.. he’s seriously raising the bar HIGH. “3 Kalatravi months later”.. EXCUSE ME?! WHAT?! Kate my girl, what are you doing to us 😭😭. I absolutely loved this book but I am very sad we won’t get another book until next year 🫤🫤. Rate: 5/5.

ARC Review: The book starts right after Bran jumps into the time portal and heads back to her time. So we get to see how Khal deals with her leaving and why she left. Past that..man it gets deep. This book had so many twist and turns that I didn’t see coming. There was so much to this story. We not only get to see into why Khal is the way he is , but how it’s affected him in life and with his relationship with Bran. You also get to delve into Bran’s past and who she is. This story will definitely take you on a wild ride but make sure your ready because there are a few hiccups along the way. Including trigger warnings for those who need them. Beyond that the book was amazing. And it concluded Bran and Khals story in this wonderful due. I absolutely loved reading it, especially since it was so different than anything else I’ve read. It’s a must for your TBR shelf.

Screaming because I loved this so much. Branwyn and Khaliv are some of my favorite characters ever. I love how Khaliv tries so hard to understand Branwyn and her feelings even if he doesn’t always get it. All of the reveals about Mervyn and the super unethical things he was doing in his facilities and the absolutely disgusting things he was doing outside of his facilities were so crazy. He just kept getting worse and worse. Vithos ended up being a super compelling character with a really tragic backstory and I was so shocked by the big reveal about him. Isaar was really interesting and he definitely evolved a lot as the story went on. I absolutely loved the way this ended and pretty much just the story in general. There is some very dark subject matter in this so please check your trigger warnings! I look forward to reading the next book!

Thoughts:
This was a thrilling conclusion to Branwyn and King Khaliv’s story. Like the first book, there was lots of mystery, heavy spice and lots of disturbing revelations. I especially liked the science fiction twists and the quest to take down the evil scientist. I look forward to reading future books that focus on Khaliv’s dragon shifter rival and his wife.

What is faith when life is unraveling before your eyes?

To continue on with the Dreadwyng Chronicles, many of the earlier mysteries have been revealed. Leaving nothing but merely a reckoning in its wake. And of course, I’m all here for it.

The world’s lore gets more and more built upon as we step into this book, would you think for the better? The depravity of the world’s reality could make you unsure. There’s so many things you get to find out, though may be a tad jarring over just how many things gets opened. Of course, what we feel is nothing compared to our characters who has to experience it in their lives.

Speaking of, the characters keep growing. They keep trying. Life keeps going, and so they have to go too. These battered precious ones, revelation upon revelation. And to think, there’s so much more to come.

I'm not sure how something could make me devastated and elated at the same time. It makes sense that mates can be relatives given how closely-knit their society was. The world-building here was incredible. I can't tell you how many times I had to cringe and remind myself I had to finish this ARC since I AM SOOOO AGAINST ANYTHING INC3STY.

But damn, I didn't see those shit coming. If you think you can figure out what happens next here, I bet you you're wrong. This was darkly humorous and tragic. Takes the worst turns possible and it definitely reminds me of that horror story Borrasca. However horrible everything was, Winnie and Khal's love stay pure and true. Still a happy ever after. They deserve it.

This book picks up right where the first left off, with Bran returning to her time and Khal left to deal with her departure. The story takes unexpected twists, diving deeper into Khal’s past and how it affects his relationship with Bran, while also exploring Bran’s backstory.

The fast-paced plot kept me hooked, and the conclusion of Bran and Khal’s story was satisfying. I did struggle a bit with connecting to the FMC’s emotions early on, but things improved in the second half. Overall, this was an exciting sequel that didn’t disappoint, and Khal’s character shift definitely kept me on my toes! Bran showed incredible strength, and I admired her for not running away!

This sequel pulled me right back into Bran and Khal’s world—raw, emotional, and unflinchingly real. Khal’s transformation gutted me, while Bran’s quiet strength grew into something fierce and unforgettable. Their story wasn’t clean or easy, but it was honest—and it stayed with me.🖤

The pacing gripped me, the emotions ran deep, and the ending… it didn’t promise a fairytale, but it felt true. A beautiful storm I didn’t want to leave.🖤

To the author my friend @kate.thepirate —thank you for giving us a continuation that hit where it hurts and heals. You created something that lingers.🖤

Out in the world on April 26, 2025. Don’t miss it.🎉🖤

This book was a lot. But like, in a good way. There was a lot of talk about mental health issues, reproductive struggles, and family issues. Please read the trigger warnings before starting this because some of this book is super heavy with the topics. I was so excited to read this book after the first one and it went so much more in depth into the character background it really gave them some depth. You got to visit a lot more of the world that was created. Make sure you check the book out after reading book 1! I really like how Kaliv started to think more about Branwyn and how he cherished their relationship differently.

I jumped right into this book the first chance I got. I was so excited to read it, and I was not disappointed! It picks up right where book one left off, and lordy it took turns I did not expect! Khalivs change of character was a bit jarring at first, and for a minute I was like whoa Jesus Khaliv your gonna break Branwyns but girly pop hung on for the ride. I give her props for not running because I would've definitely ran.

Arc review: I loved the first book and couldn’t wait to dive into this sequel! The story is fast paced and interesting with lots of twists and revelations that keep the reader on their toes. The only thing I struggled with was the FMC at times, I had a hard time emphasizing with her conclusions and emotions, especially in the first half of the book. It got better towards the second half, overall it was an enjoyable read.

This was a wonderful conclusion to Khal and Brans world!

I loved the pacing of the story, and devoured it!

The spicy scenes were impeccable🥵. I loved development in their relationship, as well as the personal development of Khal.

Their relationship felt very real and relatable and I loved that.

I appreciated the way Kate handled Brans past with sex and drugs. It was very honest and raw.

Overall, a great dragon shifter romance!

This book right here has it all! The spice is over the top, 100% perfection, will have you drooling from down below. The mmc, I want him as mine. Hes moved to the top of my book bfs! I loved him in book one, but book 2? I swoon for him. The fmc, she's a straight up bad ass! If you don't run and buy this book when it's released, you have no idea what you are missing!

My favorite quote from this read: "Remember, blood is thicker than water. He does not have to be present to be an influence to you. Sometimes, it is just in your nature."
I loved learning more about the wonders of stygian gold, good and bad. There was more worldbuilding. Very good conclusion to their story, so many climaxes and it was all tied together nicely.

This book carries on from book 1 perfectly, and it gives us so much more awesome story. You need to really pay attention while reading it because there are heaps of little pieces of information pop up, and then you will need to know about it abit further along.
The emotions in some parts while reading this book were real, you felt like you were part of the book which I love.
I honestly can’t wait for the next book to see what rollercoaster of a ride we get put on

BETA/ARC REVIEW
One thing Kate's always gonna do is traumatize me. This was as depraved as good as it was good. I kept screaming, omg. Khaliv is so obsessed and in love with her, but he's so depraved at the same time, and Winnie matches him just like that and matches his freak so well. From the beginning to the end, I was on the edge of my seat. The revelations and secrets that were uncovered, omg!! And the ending, omg, the ending, I screamed. Also, I felt bad for Vithos. I know, right. Sounds wild, but trust me, I did. One thing to know is to have an open mind while reading this, because trust me, it's depraved. One thing I will say is he would do anything for her just to ensure her safety or comfort, and I might be into the dragon smut. SUE ME!! It was good I mean it was different but damn!!!

This book was emotionally brutal and i loved it.

I'm a huge fan of K and as always her latest book didn't disappoint 💖 The 2nd installment drags you through all of the heartbreak and fury felt by Khal from the moment Bran vanishes back to her time.

Khal’s descent into grief and his anger is raw and visceral, and every chapter feels like it cuts deeper as both of their broken histories unravel on page. Nothing about this story is easy — it's messy, and painful, and achingly real.
The twists hit like a gut punch, and the emotional weight never let up. Following them as they fight their own demons to find each other again was both devastating and cathartic.
