Sugar & Dragon. Sweet Steamy Romance Act I: Temptation

Rate this book
Dago. A cynical descendant of wicked wizards with an insatiable appetite for women, power, and gold.

Hera. An empathetic healer whose impeccable reputation the reformed villain would like to borrow.

Upon hearing that a marriage could help him get a promotion to a government position, Dago doesn’t feel like laughing. But when a marriage candidate arrives at his flying castle and asks for help in breaking a curse, his draconic instinct tells him that her ability to change sugar into gold might be worth more than all his businesses combined. It doesn’t matter that the phoenix witch’s fiery gaze easily sees through his greed. What counts is that she is desperate enough to consider making a pact regardless.

Dago silences the whisper of remorse and from the icy depths of his soul, he summons his personal charm. But there is one thing he forgets to take into account.

He might not be the only one who knows how to intrigue.

Lena Abram writes plotty romantasy stories where the world is complicated, magic is taken seriously and emotions fight beastly duels with reason. She often sends her characters on a journey, but they are characterful and don’t always agree to take the designated path. So, though she enjoys reading about travel adventures and love burning slowly, it may happen that the plot of her own book will get stuck in one place and produce sparks sooner rather than later (but it is not guaranteed that the place will not move on its own or that the sparks will not ignite hatred). Lena has also a weakness for fairies, so if you decide to enter the portal leading to the worlds created by her whimsical imagination, be prepared to meet at least their mixed-blood descendants.

Or wizards. She likes wizards too.

"A pleasant tingle spread across her body. His voice was like a wave, gently washing her skin in a stimulating caress." (Act 1, Ch IV)

Vain Dago, a magus dragon-shifter, has a reputation of a playboy. Proud Hera, a maga pheonix daimon, is a healer with an upstanding reputation. Both are up for the position of Archmagus, however one wants it and the other doesn't. They have to form an alliance... of sorts to solve the mystery of a curse and find its cure.

Fits right into the cozy slow burn steamy romantasy subgenre with a little opposites attract thrown into the mix. Dago and Hera are cute as they navigate around and explore each other and come into their roles with one another.

The plot continues into Act 2. Act 1 and 2 are split into 2 novellas.

ARC Alert✨: I received an advance review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I really did like both of the main characters, Dago and Hera definitely give off Dramione vibes, but there was a lack of flow, and the low page count just didn't allow for enough time to either enjoy the romance or allow for more complete world building.

Going from nemesis to lover?!?! Interesting 👀

They both have plans to get what they want but how will their plans work in the long run ?🤭

Sooooo… this was basically a Dramione fic with dragon shifter Draco and healer Hermione?😍😂

No seriously, I got the ARC for the vibes alone and maybe skimmed over the blurb. Steamy dragon shifter? Hell yeah!

Only later did I see on here that it says it’s perfect for fans of Dramione and howls moving castle.

And then it hit me 😂
The parallels aren’t even subtle and yet it still took me the first half of the book to see them. That’s on me for sure but also speaks for the book imo.

The Ancient Greek inspired vibe, the realms, dreams and nightmares.. this read like an intriguing mix of tropes and settings I’ve enjoyed before. And of course the rich dragon shifter with a reputation immediately had me in a chokehold. Add a good old enemies to lovers arc with a marriage of convenience and I’m hooked. 😌

The writing style is interesting. It matches the vibe while also remaining more suggestive and less literal. I certainly loved the different POVs and the insight we get to their real motives. Set up like a Greek tragedy, the separation in Acts works, however I can’t help but feel at least a tiny bit disappointed by where the story broke off. Not least because I now have to wait for the next book when the first isn’t even officially out yet 😂

This is such a fun, quick read with beautiful vibes and a must read for Dramione fans imo.

tropes include
- enemies/rivals to lovers
- marriage of convenience
- he has a huge library
- kind of forced proximity
- secret agenda
- bad boy dragon shifter MMC
- brightest quasi-witch of her time

Sugar & Dragons by Lena Abram is the 1st book in her new novella series and it's was great! It was a super fun and fast read with dual POV that centers around Dago, a self assured dragon shifter, and Hera, a caring and loving phoenix shifter. These two couldn't be more opposite in every regard but a marriage of convenience could benefit them both.

I always love a book that has banter and there were parts that had me chuckling. In this first book we get a sense of who the characters are and what the need/want from each other. It's a little steamy with a touch of yearning but not over powered. By the way it ended I will most definitely be following this series to find out where their journey takes them and who falls first.

Thank you Lena Abram for providing the eARC in exchange for my voluntary honest review.

This novella was an intriguing start to the series. I thought the character voices were distinct, and I enjoyed following the start of Hera and Dago’s adventure.

That being said, the world-building was a bit confusing. There was a lot to keep track of with the exposition drops, and because of the novella format, a lot of elements felt like they weren’t fully relevant to the story yet. I understand that this story is meant to be split up into separate novellas, but it doesn’t quite make sense for the story being told. This novella didn’t feel like a complete first installment of a series, so the ending wasn’t very satisfying, nor did it feel like an ending. Instead, it felt like the first few chapters of a much larger story, which doesn’t quite fit the format of a series composed of novellas. It honestly seemed more like chapters in a fanfic rather than a complete novella.

The Archmagus title in this steamy fantasy romance will soon require a replacement. Hera and Dago are the qualified candidates. Dago, the wicked wizard's descendant, has a voracious appetite for both women and gold. Hera is a do-gooder with an impeccable reputation who also works as a healer. Hera wishes to devote her life to research, so this position was not a good fit. To safeguard her future, she decides to befriend Dago. According to their mentor, if Dago goes rogue, the role will fall on her shoulders. Abrams, Sugar, and Dragon book 1 Temptation is an entertaining balance of romance and fantasy; readers will be engrossed.

Sugar & Dragon is an enchanting tale that follows the journey of Dago and Hera, two magi who studied together and are gently coerced into a marriage of convenience to further their mutual goals. As the story unfolds, Hera remains suspicious of Dago's intentions, adding a layer of tension to their relationship.

While the book is lovely and well-crafted, it suffers from a somewhat narrow viewpoint that leaves readers yearning for more information about the vast and intriguing world beyond the central narrative. The Greek influence is evident throughout the story, but the frequent alteration of names—swapping 'c' for 'k'— (Arkadia, Sokrates) makes me wonder why bother to change it at all.

The adventure aspect of the novel is hindered by its limited perspective. We have a distinct insight into the thoughts of each character but when they talk about gathering reagents, doing research or discussing the 'curse', we are left with so few details that it loses gravitas. Though we are introduced to characters beyond the main duo, everyone is given so little description that it becomes challenging to invest in their stories. The lack of detail about the characters' appearances makes it difficult to visualize them fully.

Despite these shortcomings, Sugar & Dragon has its merits. The relationship between Dago and Hera is compelling, and the Greek-inspired elements add a unique flavor to the narrative. However, the book could benefit from more thorough world-building and character development to truly captivate its audience. Act one finished in a strange spot and I did feel left wanting more from it. This is an easy novella that can be finished in an afternoon.

This retelling of Howl's Moving Castle shows promise but would benefit from further refinement and expansion.

Ambitious and capable, Dago wants to become the new Archmagus. However, his womanizing ways and familial history of treachery may prevent him from achieving his goal. Worse yet, the position of Archmagus may be presented to Hera, his long time academic rival. When Hera approaches Dago for help resolving a curse that turns sugar into gold, Dago sees an opportunity. Can he convince her to accept his hand in marriage and allow him to take up the mantle of the Archmagus unopposed?

Temptation is a very short novella that introduces our main characters and lays the ground work for the overarching story. Dago is intriguing with his calculating actions and scheming, yet he still maintains his own sense of honor. Hera is overachieving, and moralistic, through she's trying to engage in her own version of subterfuge for the good of the people. Just as things start getting good and interesting, the novella is over.

An engaging novella with interesting characters and a creative world that I wish was longer.

This was very Dramione coded, and I’d be lying if I said that didn’t make me enjoy it even more. The dynamic between Dago and Hera is captivating, with just the right balance of tension, chemistry, and emotional depth. The rivals-to-lovers trope is executed well, adding an engaging push-and-pull dynamic that kept me invested. The magic system and world-building are intriguing, hinting at a much larger and richer universe that I would love to explore further.

While it was a quick and entertaining read, I couldn’t help but wish it were a full-length novel instead of just 100 pages. The pacing keeps things moving, but a longer format would allow for even more character development and depth to the story. The hints of spice add an extra layer of intensity to the romance, making the connection between the characters feel electric.

Overall, this was a fun and immersive read that left me wanting more. The combination of magic, romance, and rivalry made for an addictive experience.

Highly recommended to all Dramione fans btw ;)

Sugar & Dragon by Lena Abram is full of characters with potential, beautiful writing, and a plot that starts off okay. It's meant to be a novella, but it feels more like the first few chapters of a longer book.

My issues are:
There are too many problems and not enough novella in which to solve them.
The world, while showing lots of promise, is not well built for such a short amount of reading.
The magic and governmental elements are very vague, and I found myself very confused for most of the read.

Things I enjoyed:
The banter is pretty good. There is definitely chemistry between Hera and Dago.
I liked the nod to Howl's Moving Castle and the Dramione vibes.
The glossary of terms was very helpful and appreciated as I found myself referencing it throughout most of the read.
The characters were okay, but they just needed some more development.

Overall, I was a little underwhelmed and found the plot difficult to follow. I like the direction thhe story was heading, but it just fell a little flat.

BookSirens provided me with a free ARC of this book. I am voluntarily leaving this review and including my honest thoughts and opinions.

An unusual story and setting, but with a lovely underlying subject of enemies coming together for a similar purpose, albeit a different reason for both Dago and Hera.

Shorter than expected, but then it had me engaged and gripped to see what happened next, so I am excited to take up the next book to see what's next for this exciting, intriguing, and interesting duo.

Two interesting characters and loved the dual POV to observe Dago (Dragon) and Hera (Phoenix) from their perspective as well as how they seek to understand and read each other. Magical, mysterious and romantic all wrapped up in one short, enjoyable and sensual story.

For me only con was a list of terms at the beginning, which was a bit confusing and initially off-putting as to what its relevance was. Personally, did not see the need for terminology at the beginning, maybe at the end, in case you want to go deeper into different types of beings, but the story ran smoothly enough with a brief understanding and description as part of the narrative and the insertion of terms of creatures merged into the story.

I found the world interesting, but a bit confusing. I feel like I jumped into the middle of a series that you really need to read in order to enjoy.

So with that being said, it took a minute to get past my confusion to the story and characters. I will say that the glossary at the beginning was a major help!

We are introduced to Hera and Dago, one a businessman with shades of gray morals and one a honor bound healer. Both in the running for Archmagus. Past competition/rivalry from their school days makes this a true enemies to lovers romance, but Dago is almost clinical in his approach and offers a solution that hopefully satisfies both their needs.

I think this was a great intro into this world and certainly got me interested, but I just don't feel that there was enough time to really be invested and root for these two. The complexity of the world really would benefit from a full length novel.

So I rounded up from a 3.5 to a 4 star. It's hard to rate such an incredibly short novella accurately. You're just getting into the characters and the world and magic structure and then….. the end for now.

Overall I enjoyed how the book was written. Descriptions were indepth and very well done in how the author described the world. It's witty and fun and reminds me of Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet verbal sparring. Which ultimately is why I rounded up to a 4 star.

Steam/Spice was nice. It was a slow build, much like the anticipation of our MFC and MMC. It was slightly muted and not graphic at all. I found it was tasteful and well done if not a slightly cringey aspect to the trope-ish plot.

I think that this should be a full book rather than novella style because it is a lot of magic and world building structure to squeeze into a small book and that may deter others from enjoying it properly.

Overall: 4/5

Plot: 3.5/5

Character Dev: 2/5

Spice: 3/5 -- more steam than Spice

Entertainment Factor: 4/5

Thank you BookSirens, and Lena Abram for sending me this advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved the characters and the vibe of this novella, but unfortunately the world building was an issue. It felt like I picked up a book later on in a series, and should have already had the basic worldbuilding in my head already.

I think this one would have been better as a full novel, because all of this really interesting world building was jammed into about 100 pages. I love the magic system, the bits of lore, and the backgrounds of the characters, but we didn't have any time to sit with any of it before going on to the next thing we needed to learn. It was really confusing at times.

I would like to read future novellas and books set in this world to see where it goes. The magic system and dream aspects are fascinating, and I think it could lead to some really amazing stories.

So this book is very interesting. The problem I had with it was there was too many different creatures for me to keep track of and too many words that I had to kept going back to the glossary to look what they mean, so it took me longer to read than it should have, I pushed on through and the ending I enjoyed. It was a super fast paced book and it didn’t have a lot of unnecessary storyline, it was just straight to the point . I definitely love that. It was a fantasy, but for a short book, it had a lot of references, especially for someone with ADHD to go back to to remember what certain words meant luckily there was a glossary at the beginning or I probably would not have finished it. I like books that are quick paces and keeps me going to know what happens and this book just didn’t do it for me because I had to keep going back to the glossary but overall the story was good and that’s why I gave it 3.5⭐️

"An Awesome Paranormal Fantasy series"
This story is so unique, funny, exciting, and scorching hot. The characters are fantastic!
Dago is a sexy Magus silver dragon shifter. He has been trying for years to advance politically. Now he learned his mentor the archmagus is retiring. Dago is one of the candidates. One problem is his arch nemesis Hera is also a candidate. He also learns to win the position. He must clean up his reputation! To do this he must get married!
Hera is a spunky magic welder who shifts into a Phoenix. She doesn't want the position. So her mentor sets her on a mission to help Dago. Then Hera is cursed that ever time she touches sugar. So she goes to Dago for help. Dago decided to help her under one condition.
That Hera agrees to marry him. Hera reluctantly agrees.
Could they be setting up by their mentor, and fate? Can they cure her curse?
You will love this five star plus story!

Intriguing and definitely looking forward to future installments of this novella series. I will absolutely admit, I would have throttled Dago up until about three quarters of the way through. But given his reputation and history, that was probably the intention. But the more he and Hera interacted, the better I liked him and I very much enjoyed the growth and change within their relationship.

My only reservation was that, even with the glossary, I never felt I quite got a handle on the all the different variations creatures and how everything fit together. I still very much enjoyed it, but I think I would have even more if I’d understood all their references and how things were really working.

All in all, a great start for a series and I appreciate the author and BookSirens for the review copy!

This was a quick and fun read. Not only the first book in this series but also the first book I’ve read by this author.

This novella follows Draco, a descendant of wicked wizards and dragon shifter and Hera, a healer and phoenix shifter. Hera goes to Draco to ask for his help with breaking a curse. Draco uses this to help him get what he wants, a marriage of convenience that would help him with the government position promotion he’s been seeking. These two couldn’t be more opposite from each other. I loved the chemistry and the banter between the two. The descriptive world building and character development being laid out in this novella is captivating and look forward to more being unfolded as the series progresses. I’ll say the glossary at the beginning was very helpful. I look forward to continuing this series and see what lies ahead for Drago and Hera.

This was definitely a good introduction to the Sugar & Dragon series, with interesting characters and world building.

Our two main characters couldn't be more different, Hera is a phoenix daimon maga, and Dago is a dragon daimon mage. Both are up to take over as Archmagus when the current one retires, but Hera doesn't want the job, and Dago doesn't have the good reputation needed for the job. The two are rivals, but circumstances have caused them to work together.

Temptation is just act 1 of this "sweet steamy romance" and it ended too soon for my liking. I was enjoying seeing the characters get to know each other better then bam, it's the end of act 1. I am definitely interested in seeing where this goes, I really enjoy stories involving magic and mages.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I would like to rate it 3.25/5 stars. This book definitely has a fantasy theme and a heavy romance side. The encounters between the FMC and MMC romantically are very thought out and descriptive. I do find the plot around them rushed and a bit spotty. For a fun romp style read, this is a nice book to get into. I would have like to see more of the main plot branched out and explained. I’m also a bit confused on if this is a rivals-to-lovers or enemies-to-lovers style romance. It started off as the latter but leaning strongly towards the former the further in I got. That being said, it was a very quick jump to romance and I’m as confused as they are about the sudden feelings changed. I found it a fun short read even though I would like to know more about the main plot and character development.

This was such a cute and fun read! This would be the perfect weekend or vacation book to bing in a day or two, or one sitting.

“Dago” is a spellbinding fantasy romance filled with witty intrigue, sizzling chemistry, and a touch of whimsical magic. The dynamic between the cynical, power-hungry Dago and the fiery, cursed Hera crackles with tension, making their reluctant alliance both entertaining and deeply satisfying. With its dreamy, logic-defying world and playful nods to beloved fantasy tropes, this novel is a delight for fans of morally gray heroes and sharp, enchanting heroines.

This book definitely read like an enchanting anime or Studio Ghibli film, if you are a fan of either I highly suggest reading Sugar & Dragon: Book 1!

Thank you to Booksirens for an advanced copy of this book.

I feel like this story had so much h potential. Enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience, magic, spice...but it just didn't deliver everything I hoped.

Being a novella, there really wasn't a lot of time to build up the world and the story suffered for that. The world is incredibly complicated which made the story quite difficult to follow at times. There also wasn't a lot of time to develop the characters and their relationship so it felt quite rushed.

I feel like there is so much potential for this story to be a masterpiece if it was just long enough to delve into the world and its characters a little more.

Temptation by Lena Abram is a captivating blend of dark allure and magical intrigue. Dago, a cunning descendant of wicked wizards, is charming yet morally gray, making him the perfect antihero. Hera, a phoenix witch with the rare gift of turning sugar into gold, is both strong and vulnerable, balancing Dago’s sharp edges with her warmth. Their dynamic is electric — full of tension, desire, and underlying danger. The worldbuilding is rich and immersive, with the flying castle and magical politics adding depth to the story. Dago’s calculated charm and Hera’s guarded strength make their push and pull irresistible. If you love morally complex characters, a touch of forbidden magic, and sizzling chemistry, this book will keep you hooked from start to finish.

*ARC Review*

I wanted something cutesy, ran into the second book before I ran into the first so of course I had to read this one. It is cute, men are frustrating, and all relationships are built on what people can get out of them. This was a quick fun little read and I was more than excited to continue on to the second book.

I do appreciate the little glossary in the beginning to let you know what various little terms

The story felt like it moved pretty quickly, and while I was a little taken aback it didn’t make it unenjoyable. I get the impression that once the story is finished, it’s going to make a pretty little collection that I’ll have as a hardcover on my bookshelf.

This was a good start to an interesting little series.

I received an ARC for this book from Book Sirens and am leaving this review by my own desire.

While I did enjoy the book and found it to be very fast paced, I felt like something was missing. The character development, while good, could have been better. I feel like it ended on a strange note, even knowing that this was only the first story in the series. I didn't feel that the ending was a true cliffhanger.

The main characters were very adversarial and even with the short progression of their personal relationship, there continues to be a slow burn. I feel it was too quick for the relationship to progress, but do like the enemies to lovers thought process.

This book was refreshing.

The cover definitely matched the story - super sweet and very cute.

The book has a YA feel to it - the writing is a little stilted, but considering the characters and the setting, it works.

An opposites attract story with the equivalent of the rebel and the good girl. Their personality clashes were quite amusing, and it was interesting to see a little growth in the characters.

I enjoyed it as a cute little escape. As a 'grovel' reader, this was a sweet little palate cleanser between 'heavy' reads.

Sugar & Dragon is a whimsical and imaginative read that blends everyday life with quirky fantasy in a charming, if slightly uneven, way. The premise is refreshingly original, and Abram’s playful writing style adds a cozy, offbeat tone to the story. While the characters are likable and the world has creative flair, the pacing can be inconsistent, with some plot threads feeling more like amusing detours than essential parts of the narrative. Still, it’s a fun, lighthearted start to a promising series, perfect for readers who enjoy magical tales with a twist and don’t mind a few bumps along the way.
