My Husband's Child: An incredibly emotional and heartbreaking family drama

Rate this book
When I find a little girl standing on my doorstep, I don’t know what to do. But as I take her small hand in mine, she whispers words that will change my life. ‘Mummy said you’d look after me.’

As I tuck the children into bed, I feel a familiar longing stirring in my heart. I press a gentle kiss onto their foreheads, then remind myself that they are not mine. So why are they here?

Once the children are asleep, I unfold the note my ex-husband’s daughter had clutched in her hand when I found her and her brother on my doorstep. Smoothing the paper, I read the message Please take care of them. They are better off with you.

I look out the window, but whoever brought them to my house has vanished without a trace. It must have been their mother, but when I called earlier there was no answer. I try again, but no one picks up.

Who would abandon their children in the dead of night, and why would my ex-husband’s new wife entrust them to me? And if my instinct is right, and something is terribly wrong, how can I protect them?

An utterly compelling and heartbreaking story about motherhood and a devastating family secret. Readers who love Kate Hewitt, Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain will be totally captivated by this deeply emotional novel.

My Husband’s Child is a beautiful, heart-stirring novel. Cora’s story is a roller coaster of emotions, after her ex-husband’s two children are left on her doorstep. The feelings are raw, complicated, and genuine, as lives are turned upside down, leading to a beautiful story of the love and devotion of one woman and the children left in her care. This is not always an easy story, with its share of upheaval and hard choices; but it is a story that will fill your heart with love and hope and healing. I received an advance reader copy of this novel.

My husbands child is quite the emotional rollercoaster. I would never and could never leave my children on someone's doorstep to care for them. And honestly, I can't imagine being put into Cora's shoes. What a strong and phenomenal woman.

This story is both beautiful and heartbreaking. It's definitely worth the read.

I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.

Cora Campbell’s life immediately changed direction when her husband informs her that their marriage was over and he then marries another woman. Nonetheless, Cora has been enjoying her life, especially when it comes to her adventurous spirit. Cora’s busy life completely changes course when two children are left on her doorstep. Her ex-husband’s children.

Cora always had a good relationship with her ex-father-in-law James. Cora at first appeals to him to take the children, but his health concerns would make that quite difficult. So, in most of the ways that counts, Cora has become an instant mother. The children are quite young. A toddler and a pre-schooler, and Cora can’t help but to fall in love.

Whether or not Cora will gain full custody, as well as keeping it is challenged by the sudden reappearance of their mother. Soon after, their father reappears as well. It has been more than a few months now, and unsurprisingly, Cora struggles when it comes to imagining giving the children up. The children know Cora as Mummy and she wants to keep it that way.

Alison Ragsdale’s latest emotional read is praised for its well-developed characterization, particularly of Cora, a woman who became an instant mother and whose life was turned upside down. The book delves into Cora’s tragic past and her coping mechanisms, including her cochlear implant and her determination to keep it from hindering her life. I also really loved James, the children’s grandfather. His significant role in this book provided Cora for the sturdy support she needed at times. Lastly, her best friend Aisha. Definitely friendship goals. A story like this that depends on the relationships between the characters goes a long way to making this story authentic and memorable.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

MY HUSBAND’S CHILD is the latest beautifully-written and heart-tugging novel from one of my favorite authors, Alison Ragsdale. I have loved every book I have read by this author and I am always excited when I learn she has a new book coming out. In this engrossing story, we meet Cora who is living on her own, trying to put her life back together after her husband leaves her for another woman and starts a new family with her. She is stunned when one evening her doorbell rings and on her doorstep are her ex-husband’s two young children, with nothing but a small suitcase and note to please take care of them. She brings the children in and over the coming days, she frantically tries to locate their parents. Over the coming weeks, Cora and her former father-in-law, James, care for the children and Cora soon finds herself loving them as if they were her own. Life is once again turned upside down when both parents re-emerge each telling a different story of why they abandoned their children. Cora faces an impossible choice – can she trust either her ex or his wife enough to allow the children back into their custody? What follows is a gripping and heartbreaking story of love and family that evokes every possible emotion. As always, Alison Ragsdale has written a deeply moving story with characters that feel so real, I felt like I knew them personally. The complex themes are approached with compassion and sensitivity. I highly recommend this thought-provoking and touching book. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read and review an early copy.

My Husband's Child by Alison Ragsdale is an emotional and heartwarming story about family not necessarily being your own flesh and blood but rather those you love and those who love you.

Cora has just gotten used to living on her own after her divorce from her husband Fraser. Fraser left Cora for another woman and ended up having two children with her. Cora's life changes when one day she opens the door to two children on her doorstep with no one else around. They are Fraser's children. Where are their parents and why have they been left for Cora to take care of? Unable to turn these kids away she enlists Fraser's father James to help her with the kids. Fast forward a year, Fraser returns wanting his children back. This sparks an ugly custody battle as Cora has loved and cared for these children like her own.

This was such an emotional story. I am an absolute sucker for a found family trope so I loved seeing Cora navigate her way through unexpected motherhood. I definitely felt deeply connected to Cora and loved all the emotions that this book made me feel! Definitely recommend this emotional family drama!

Thank you to NetGalley, Alison Ragsdale, and Bookouture for this ARC. Publication day was March 4th 2025.

I always enjoy Alison’s emotional and heartbreaking stories and this one too touched my heart.
Cora is completely thrown in at the deep end when her ex husband’s children are left in her care and she has to make the difficult decision to look after them.
Cora knows what it feels like to be left without parents, her own childhood was blighted by being in homes without love and protection.
It was so beautiful to watch Cora slowly becoming the special adult that these children needed, I was soon completely immersed into this heart rending story.
After becoming their caregiver and settling into her new role, Cora’s life is shook by the reappearance of the parents.
It was so interesting to gradually discover the truth behind the reasons why the children were left so suddenly in the care of Cora and the significance of the choice of her too.
Wonderful characters and some clever twists made this book difficult to put down. Ultimately an uplifting read that tugged dramatically at my heartstrings throughout.

This book made for a change of scenery between fantasy books. And a change it definitely was.

I loved Cora, Evie and Ross. Their blossoming relationship warming my heart even more than I thought it would. Their family from the heart was just gorgeous.

There are many lines this book took and I'm very happy with the way it all played out. I was worried there for a minute that they way I pictured it all would be ruined and tears would be rolling.

Also loved James and Cora relationship. It made me all warm a gooey.

As a vivid fan of Alison Ragsdale writing I knew this book would be fab, and saved it for just the right time after being put in a reading slump by a certain viral book.

I can tell you one thing, Alison Ragsdale knows how to deliver a story that will tear your heart out. Her books are so wonderfully heartwarming, but to get to that point, you need to feel the anguish the main character is going through first. That is not a bad thing! At some point in the book, you begin to see the sun shine through the clouds. Her newest book, My Husband’s Child, is one of those remarkable stories.

Cora is the main character in this book. She is divorced from her husband and is living in the home that her adoptive parents left to her. She had a rough beginning to her life, which gives her the big heart that she has. You must have a big heart to take in your ex-husband’s children. They have been abandoned by both their mother and father. Oh! Did I tell you to have your box of tissues handy? You might want to because this is such an utterly beautiful story.

My emotions were all over the place while I was reading this book. I loved her father in law even though he came off as an opinionated old man. He did have a soft spot in his heart for Cora. This book deals with many topics that are hard to read about. There is abandonment and abuse to name just a couple. The love that shines through in this book more than makes up for the sadness that is felt.

I love a book that will break my heart to pieces and then mend it back together again. I love a book about love and not just the love between partners but also the love of close friends, family, and home. If you love a good clean story and one that will make you feel things you haven’t felt for a while, then Alison Ragsdale’s My Husband’s Child needs the top spot on your nightstand. Until next time…Happy Reading!

I read an ARC (Advanced Reader’s Copy) of this engaging read with its unusual premise. Cora is suddenly asked to care for two young children to whom she has no legal connection. They were fathered by her ex-husband and abandoned on her doorstep one night by their birth mother. Cora does, however, feel a moral responsibility to these precious youngsters whom she grows to love. What an interesting premise for a book! The unique twist in the relationships between the adults presents an intriguing puzzle and creates a challenging situation. With whom should these children be placed for them to thrive, be safe, feel nurtured, and loved? Alison writes endearing characters who will quickly establish themselves in your heart. This book will be available in ebook, Kindle Unlimited, and in print on March 4. It is available for preorder now. #netgalley #myhusbandschild

When Cora opens her door one evening, the last thing she expected to see was her ex husband’s two young children standing there with a note asking her to look after them.

As weeks turn into months, Cora grows attached to the children, as they also have to her. With her ex father-in-law’s help, the two of them do all they can for the children.

When their mother finally turns up and demands her children back, Cora knows she has to do the right thing by the children, no matter how hard that is.

With Cora feeling that there is more to Holly than meets the eye, she is determined to get to the bottom of just what has gone on.

I found this story quite hard to start with, how could anyone just up and leave their young children?

As the story progressed, I could feel the love between Cora and the children, and willed everything to go okay.

I liked most of the characters in the story, they were down to earth and supportive to Cora.

It is a dark tale with some difficult subjects that were sensitively handled.

My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Talk about drama...this book has loads of it. What would you do if two children are left at your doorstep? But with that Cora finds a whole new world she has to deal with. I really thought I knew where this book was going but soon found out there were many twists.

I have read other books by this author and I am happy to say this one did not disappoint. A very emotional book that tears at your heart.

Another heartfelt story by one of my favorite authors. Alison Ragsdale captures your heart with her stories. They are always so realistic that I wonder if she has lived it or knows someone who has. Her books always make me shed tons of tears.

Cora Campbell is a divorced woman who was raised by loving adoptive parents. Before them she had been in foster care and it was hard. She's always wanted a family. Children. When her husband told her he fell for someone else it almost did her in. Then when he started a family with this woman it devastated her further.

One night there is a knock on her door and standing there in the dark are her exe husband's children. The older is a girl about three years old and her baby brother who is eighteen months. She brings them in and takes care of them. She does everything she should to make sure they are protected. How could their mother do such a thing. How could their dad. And why...

There is a mystery involved in this story that will keep you guessing. The why of a mother and father leaving their children. With her exe's dad's help Cora is able to gain the children's trust and love. But when their mother, Holly, returns what will be her excuse. Then shortly after their father, Frasier, also returns. Cora and Frank, Frasier's dad, are willing to fight for these children. They also want what is best for them.

When certain secrets are finally revealed Cora is stunned. So was I.... I expected a whole other direction but this was done perfectly. I was glad I didn't guess it.

This book is about some abuse. Both child and spousal. It's not graphic so no trigger warnings. But it does eventually come out.

I loved this book. It was, like her other books, a page turner. One that was hard to put down. This story was about a subject that I have not read much at all about. It was very heartfelt and sad. But it did have a good ending.

Thank you #NetGalley, #Bookouture, for this ARC. This is my opinion of this story.

Alison Ragsdale, the Author of “My Husband’s Child” has written an emotional and heartfelt novel. I love that Alison Ragsdale discusses important contemporary topics in her books with empathy and compassion, and “My Husband’s Child” is a well-written and vividly told story. The genres for this book are Women’s Literary Fiction, Contemporary Fiction, Mothers and Children Fiction, and Women’s Crime Fiction. The author describes her dramatic characters as complex, complicated and flawed.

Cora Campbell is a divorced chef that has had a difficult life. Cora seeks for happiness and contentment and the feeling that she belongs to a family. As an adult, Cora has a cochlear implant that helps her hear, but has difficulty with certain loud noises or sounds. I appreciate that Alison Ragsdale mentions disabilities in her characters, and how they can function in life. One night she answers the door to find her ex-husbands young daughter and baby boy with a note asking her to take care of them, and telling her they are better off with her.

Cora is surprised that their mother Holly would just leave them, and she seeks help from the children’s grandfather. Cora starts to fall in love with the children, and is now the legal guardian The children call Cora their mother.. Holly does come back and wants her children. At the same time, her missing ex-husband, Frasier returns and doesn’t want Cora to give the children to Holly. What should Cora do?

I appreciate that the author discusses important topics such as mental health, physical and mental abuse, physical disabilities and handicaps, the importance of family, friends, communication, honesty, self-growth and awareness, love and hope. I highly recommend this thought-provoking novel.

First, I want to thank Alison Ragsdale, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.

My Husband’s Child by Alison Ragsdale is a heartwrenching, poignant and compelling book and beautifully written. The storyline was so exceptional and addicting that I binged read it til the wee hours into the morning.

My Husband’s Child I feel would be perfect for book clubs and book discussions because there are so many important life lessons and messages in this book that can be discussed. Not only that but the family dynamics of the storyline I feel there could be some heavy discussions within the groups.

In My Husband’s Child the character I most liked the most and could relate to was Cora. She wanted to become a mother but never had the opportunity. Until her ex husband and his wife ups and abandons their two kids and leaves them with Cora. Seriously, who does that?! Turn not only Cora’s life upside down but those two innocent kids that don’t know what is going on.

Needless to say there is a lot of family drama in My Husband’s Child. This is one story that took me on an emotional rollercoaster where I was literally yelling and screaming at my Kindle because some of these characters pissed me off.

There were some very tender and sweet moments between Cora and the kids that just melted my heart.

My Husband’s Child is one of those books that the storyline will stay with you way after you finish reading the book. This has to be on your tbr list for sure.

A good book will pull and tug at your heart. It’ll know just the right words and terms to make you think you’re reading non-fiction. Alison Ragsdale knows exactly what she’s doing with her writing and I’m here to tell you, I needed tissues for this one! Sigh…I needed them for her last few – she’s perfected her craft and knows the right stories to make her words literally jump off the page at you.

Cora thought she was done with her ex husband until his two children were left on her doorstep one night. His two children by the woman he left Cora for. It seems they both have just up and vanished. Cora, being the amazing and caring woman she is takes them in. She doesn’t just take them in though, she loves and adores them, she becomes their “Mummy Cora” and then that role becomes threatened when both of the children’s parents come back into town.

This story was so well crafted, it was written with love and full of character. Cora’s personality shined bright through each of her interactions. It was as though we were watching this story take place in front of our eyes and I gasped with every climax of the story. Alison took us for a gut wrenching ride where love played its part so brightly and it was a 5️⃣⭐️ trip that I thoroughly enjoyed❗️

A beautifully written and emotional story. I can't imagine how any woman would cope with her ex-husband's children from his current marriage being left on her doorstep with a note, but in this gorgeous book, exactly that happens to Cora, with no contact from her ex or the children's mother.

With her life turned upside down, Cora takes the two children into her home and into her heart. I loved the rawness of the writing; heartbreaking and difficult at times, and then, at other points, exuding so much warmth and love. Cora was such a brilliantly written character with a lot of depth ad the children captured my heart, just as they did hers. There was a complexity to the relationships between the adults in the story that added another layer to the story, particularly in Cora's link to James, the children's paternal grandfather.

But this is so much more than a sweet, happy ever after. When Holly, the children's mother, reappears, the safe and loving environment that Cora has created for the children is threatened and it doesn't end there... the emotional rollercoaster just gets faster! Tissues at the ready!

5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Alison Ragsdale and Bookouture for an ARC in return for an honest review.

Well, well, well, this is a story that tore me in two.

On the one hand, I cannot understand how some parents can leave their children behind, hoping someone will take them in and care for them, while they do what exactly?

That was my first thought when I read this book. Little by little everything is revealed and I see what the parents were doing, but they way they went about it, is utterly despicable. Maybe you were feeling very low at the time, but a parent should always think about their children's best interest no matter what.

Cora is worth her weight in gold, that's for sure, but what if she did not want to invest her time?

In the end it seems all intentions were good, but they just should have acted a lot faster and it would have done everybody a huge favour.

I loved the story and those two little ones are just adorable. Very emotional and very beautiful. 5 stars

Thank you

Two of the characters in this book made me so angry. First Fraser was a lout and jerk for what he did to Cora. Holly was no better.
They dump their kids on Cora’s doorstep because they couldn’t handle the mess they had made.
I thought Cora’s comments to both of them hit the nail on the head. They were bot( very selfish and the kids deserved to stay with Cora because she was their true champion.
I loved Aisha because her directness echoed what I was thinking.
The book has a positive ending but I think Fraser and Holly got off light. Sometimes people don’t deserve another chance.

I loved this book. It was heartwarming and shows how someone can come to love a child and/or children that aren’t yours as your own. I was so curious what the big secret was that made the parents decide to leave the kids with the ex-wife. I feel like it was a good reason to do so. I had no idea that is what the secret would be tho. I really liked the ending, it seemed like the best way to end it. The grandfather’s help with the kids was so wonderful to see. Grandparent relationships are so special. I loved how involved he was with the kids. This was a great quick read. Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC.

This was a book that will take your emotions on a roller coaster. Cora is shocked to find that her ex-husband and his wife have disappeared and left their young children on her doorstep. She and their grandfather join together to give the children the love they need. Where are the parents and what secrets are they hiding? When the parents resurface, how can Cora cope with possibly losing these children that she loves and that know her as Mummy. Family is so much more than blood.

Many thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher, Bookouture, for an ARC of this book which I had the pleasure of reading. All opinions are my own. Publication date: March 4, 2025

My Husband’s Child was a really good family drama that drew me in right from the very beginning. I thought Cora was a wonderful character and she just adored the two children, Ross and Evie. There were some heartbreaking and emotional parts and I did guess what was actually going on but it certainly didn’t take away from my enjoyment of this book. The characters were all really well described and I loved the relationship Cora had with her ex Father in Law James Munro. These two people were determined to do all they could for the young children. This was an emotional read at times and one which will stay with me.

When Cora finds one day her husband’s two children on her doorstep she doesn’t know what to do. But when the parents didn’t show up she has to make a decision, going along with her own life of taking care of the children. But what will happen when the parents want their children back? What is the best solution for them?
I really enjoyed this emotional story, the choices that have to be made, what people to trust. Again a great story by this author.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing this ARC, this review is my own opinion.

This is the twelfth book I have read this year, and it is the first 5 star I have given as a review.

The book was a beautifully written story, about a woman who's ex-husband remarried, had children, then left the children on her doorstep one wintry night.

The characters were well established, with their backgrounds being built wonderfully throughout the book, giving glimpses of their upbringing. Empathy is shown throughout the novel, and it really tugs at your heart.

A fantastic book, and I highly recommend it.

My Husband's Child is the latest stunning creation by the incredibly talented Alison Ragdale.

The story introduces us to Cora, who's husband left her for another woman,as well as grappling with the loss of her adoptive parents, and reflects on her difficult early childhood. A couple of years later she is stunned to finds two young children left on her doorstep, who turn out to be the offspring of her ex-husband and his new wife. What will she do? Naturally, she'll fall in love with them! But can she ensure their safety?

I was completely engrossed in this novel from start to finish. Alison has crafted wonderful, relatable characters that kept me turning the pages to uncover the larger story. It's truly not what you would expect!

I highly recommend you get your copy soon!
