Holly Green writes historical sagas about love and war, and her books are inspired by the stories she heard from her parents when she was a child. Her father was a professional singer with a fine baritone voice and her mother was a dancer, but they hd to give up their professions at the outbreak of World War II.

The final book in this mini series, we finally see the war coming to an end but not before several long and brutal battles. Alix is still with the partisans, Steve the chetniks, Leo handling things in Cairo and Sasha with the king in exile in London. Alix is assigned to watch the newly arrived British mission as she speaks their language and as a woman goes mostly unnoticed by them. There are plenty of hard times ahead as they are forced to keep moving up and down mountains with little to no food and water, tensions are high as the promised food, medicine and explosives from the British never seem to arrive. After suffering a few heartbreaking loses Alix is ready to fight again and soon is back to blowing up bridges. Steve meanwhile finds himself abandoned by Milhailovic and left to wander hoping he can find his fellow Brits or someone to take him in before he's taken prisoner or worse. Leo is just desperate to learn any news of her daughter and Sasha is dealing with a young stubborn king who wants to marry and also to be dropped in and fight for his country despite that not being a good idea. As always this was a a very engaging and gripping read. I probably would've finished it in a few days but I had headaches that kept me from reading but when I dud sit down to read I had a hard time putting the book down. I enjoyed seeing what became of Alix and Steve and the continuation of Leo and Sasha's story. A part of me wonders if there will be a third mini series featuring Alix's daughter or granddaughter. Growing up in the 80s and 90s I remember the war that tore that region apart and even know a lady who fled to Canada, having lost several loved ones as well as her country in that war. But this was still a fitting finish to the series, the research as always was impeccable and as a history nerd I appreciated the inclusion of sources at the end for me to search up and add to my ever growing TBR pile. It would also be interesting to see how or if the family continues to live on the region under Tito's rule as well given how much Sasha opposed him throughout the whole series.
UK author Holly Green (a nom de plume) has served as a teacher and actress (as Hilary Green) and now is an established author of historical sagas, especially focused on WW I and WW II, enlightening her audience with her exploration of women’s active roles in those wars. Her Women of the Resistance is now three books strong: A CALL TO HOME is Book 3. The mood for this immersive novel is set as the story opens, in Bihac, Bosnia in 1943 as we meet Alix: ‘Alexandra Malokovic woke out of the nightmare that had bedevilled her sleep for days. She sat up, shivering, her heart thumping. For a few seconds she could not recognize her surroundings, then the outlines of the sparse furnishings of the room solidified in the faint moonlight coming through a gap in the curtains. This was her room in the house they had commandeered in Bihac, the city Tito’s Partisans had captured after a bitter battle a few weeks before Christmas – a battle in which she had played an important part. This was safety, an end to the long weeks on the march…’ And we learn that Alix is a ‘partisanska, one of the many women who fought alongside the men as equal comrades.’
The author distills the plot well: ‘Alix has always been on the side of the Resistance. Over two years of danger and suffering, she has continued the fight alongside her comrades in the Partisans. But while facing constant threat, her personal relationships, with Nikola – the man she was supposed to marry – and Drago, her lifelong friend, are complicated. Working with the rival Chetniks is Steve, the American pilot who is never far from Alix’s mind. Despite wanting the same peaceful outcome, they remain on opposite sides. The hope of a reunion seems unlikely, but nothing is ever predictable in love and war…’ Reading this novel encourages the new reader to immediately read the first two volumes of this important series – that is how mesmerizing this fine novel is!
In the third book in the Women of the Resistance series by Holly Green, readers are dropped into the middle of World War II and the central European fighting where Alix is hard at work with the partisans and the local resistance as they fight against the Nazi regime. When her personal relationships with Nikola -- who she was supposed to marry -- and Drago -- her best and oldest friend -- become complicated, Alix turns to Steve even though he is an American pilot working with the rival Chetniks. As the war continues and the chances for reunions and reconciliation grow slimmer, neither Alix nor anyone else can predict what might happen as World War II continues to rage across Europe. With incredible characters and complex world-building, this novel is incredibly detailed and really pulls readers into the story through the characters’ relationships and their resistance work. The historical details and research add some fascinating depth to the novel and to Alix’s personal journey during the war. Emotionally intense and incredibly detailed, this well-written new novel is a great continuation of this historical fiction series that fans of World War II historical fiction looking for something set outside France or Britain will absolutely love.

"A Call to Home" by Holly Green is set around the time period of World War II, giving a narrative of Alix, a young woman who joins the Resistance in Central Europe. She is a strong woman leading and protecting her people, fighting alongside the Partisans. The novel offers a vivid description of how she became involved and how she managed to survive and conceal her identity. Her journey is not just a survival story, but it also captures the real emotions and dangers she manages to overcome. The story blends perfectly her relationship with Nikola, friendship with Drago, and connection to an American pilot, Steve. Her choices are never easy, and the emotional weight of these relationships adds a heartfelt layer to the story. The author has used strong storytelling with well-maintained historical detail, which aids in connecting with the novel at many places. I am fond of wartime reads, and this has become my all-time favourite. Grab your copy and delve into the world created by Green.
First, I have to applaud Green for knowing how to grab your attention so well from the outset. This is the third in the series, and while I plan to go back and read the first two, I didn’t feel too lost diving in here. The story is fast-paced, and the characters dynamic. The world truly comes to life around you, and it’s clear a decent amount of research must have gone into this, to make everything so vivid. The emotions that are evoked throughout the story will truly tug at your heartstrings, and you’ll find yourself so invested in the lives of these characters that you won’t want to set the story down once you start reading. Highly recommend if you enjoy emotionally charged, strong FMC, slight romantic plot WWII stories!
The last volume in this WWII miniseries is fascinating and is a strong finale to this series. Alix, who remains with the partisans, experiences harsh fights, malnutrition, and treachery while ordered to watch a British expedition. Steve is abandoned, Leo yearns for news of her daughter, and Sasha meets a difficult young monarch in exile. The tension is always present, the action is fierce, and the emotional toll is deep. This book is a great conclusion, carefully analyzed. I love the writing with a strong sense of fortitude and not giving up. Great historical fiction and well worth a read.
"Coming back wasn’t part of the plan. But maybe the plans we don’t make are the ones that end up mattering the most."
If you love historical fiction that pulls you into the heart of wartime drama while also tugging at your emotions, A Call to Home by Holly Green is definitely one to pick up.
The story centres around Alix, a fiercely brave woman who’s been fighting with the Resistance for over two years. She's not just surviving, she’s actively risking everything alongside the Partisans. From the very start, you can feel the weight she carries: the constant danger, the emotional strain, and the complicated relationships she’s trying to navigate through it all. If you’re a fan of wartime stories with strong women, impossible love, and deep emotional stakes, this one will stay with you long after you turn the last page.
