The Broken and The Brave is a collection of never-before-seen stories from the characters you’ve come to know and love in EC Garrett’s Dragon Queen series. Part novella, part prequel, and part alternative-pov to The Forgotten and The Feared, this book features POV’s from Remus ‘Os’ Ostia, Prince Nyall Drayven, the Dyre Wolf Virgyl, the Dragon Vesimyr, and more.
Author’s Note: This collection features mature themes intended for those 18 and up. Please review the full list at at the beginning of the book before reading. CW includes scenes M/M romance and spice, graphic violence, torture, grief, death of loved ones, PTSD, and mental illness.
EC Garrett is an Alaskan transplant now living in Kansas City, MO. She writes fantasy/sci-fi and romantic speculative fiction.
She has her B.A. in English Literature from the University of Nevada, Reno with a focus on Early Modern and Medieval Literature, and a minor in Medieval History with a focus on the Later Roman Empire.
In her spare time, she’s either reading or watching the latest fantasy releases, riding horses at the barn, spending time with her family, or playing with her very cute but extremely onrey dachshund mix, Frankie.
This novella was everything I didn’t know I needed! I loved getting different POVs, seeing events from fresh angles gave so much more depth to the story and the world.
It was also fun to get glimpses into side characters and relationships we didn’t see as much of in book one direwolves, fae, elves, mages, dragons just so much richness and lore. It felt like being given extra puzzle pieces that make the larger picture clearer.
It’s the perfect bridge between The Forgotten and The Feared and what’s coming next, and now I’m even more desperate to read book 2.
A solid novella. Giving you some history of relationships that occurred before book 1 as well as new looks into things we didn’t see. Plot, pros, & cons below.
PLOT Little development of Nyall & Os’s relationship + some other POVs outside of the main girls for the most part to recap the first book. This book has: - some brutality so plz check your triggers - queer & het romances (no spice) - dragons, elves, fae, demis, direwolves, humans, mages, all the magic
PROS - Taran’s POVs ripped my heart apart in the best way omg. - I loved the direwolf POVs as well. - Getting to know history between main characters was fun. - Really enjoyed other POVs from interactions we experienced already in book 1. Was fun to see what was going on elsewhere & where people’s thoughts were around our core characters.
CONS - I just wanted a little more from the Nyall & Remus chapters. Like I feel like we got fed but I was still hungry after them, ya know?
2.0 stars. The writing in this was night and day compared to book 1 and such a great improvement. HOWEVER, what the crap was that?!
*************SPOILERS**********************
1. I wanted to DNF during Taran and his mate's chapter. Dude, is this a Disney store between a horse and a dark unicorn?! That was kind of ridiculous. Thankfully, this book was short, and I made it through. 2. So many important talks / situations were skipped in Os POV. 3. Os KNEW HOW JEALOUS AMALIA WAS ABOUT THE CHICK HE SLEPT WITH, BUT YOU ARENT GOING TO TELL HER YOU PRACTICALLY LOVED THE PERSON YALL ARE WORKING WITH?! 4. Fantasy needs to chill. If it's not women's empowerment constantly being shoved down your throat, its "love is love". Dude, 3 times in the book?! 4-5 times in two books???? CHILLLLLLL
OMG. Did the Dragon Queen series need to get any better? No. Did it? YES! The opposite POV of all the characters we knew and loved, and some we just knew, and some we didn’t love haha. It was WHAT WE NEEDED. If you have read The Forgotten and The Feared, you NEED to read The Broken and The Brave!!! And then you’ll be extra prepped for The Defiant and The Damned 😎
But this... I'm sorry but I can't forgive OS. He basically loved the price and decided not to inform Amalia. They worked alongside the prince and he chose not to inform her.
For me that's cheating and even if this does turn into RH it's still not ok..

I literally loved this so much! It gave is so much background and history between some of the characters. It was just as dark as book 1 which is crazy. I love all of these characters so much. It was also really nice to get the opposite POVs during the ending. Im so excited to continue this series.
Some parts were repetitive because it was a copy paste from the first book even though it had different POVs which I felt was odd. There were enough typos that it stood out to me and was annoying. I can overlook one or two but it happened over and over again. Otherwise the story is engaging. I don’t like the way it appears to be heading with two of the characters because I want a happily ever after for a different couple but we’ll see what happens. This book is DARK af so be prepared for the extreme emotional damage that ensues. I’ve read many books with trigger warnings that weren’t really that bad but this one truly is. Don’t let it scare you away though because the overall story is going to be incredible.
CW: violence, gore, some spice, animal cruelty/death, mental health/trauma/references to self harm, others.
I told y’all this author was going to hit stride on this series, and I was right. And we didn’t even have to wait for book 2– we got it in a novella!
Long ago, a prince met a dragon. The dragon met a Wytch. And an entire kingdom fell into chaos around them.
Truth be told, I don’t really know if this meets the strictest of definitions for ‘novella’ since it’s as long as most other full fantasy novels, but whatever it is, it was good. Part prequel, part alternate POV collection, this book gives us tons of answers on the why and the how and the ‘what were they thinking.’ I’m a sucker for both having all the information and having all the POVs, so this one was loads of fun.
There were only two small hiccups here that stood out to me, and they’re so minor that they really didn’t detract all that much from the actual story. One is a bit of fogginess surrounding the time jumps from the prequel portion of the book. Several hundred years are covered with no clear delineations, which made it a little hazy at times. The other is some mild subject disagreements between who’s speaking/acting and the pronouns used for them (‘I’ vs ‘she’, etc). My best guess is that these are parts that were pulled directly from book one that just slipped through the editing process. It didn’t change the story at all, just confused me for a moment while I sorted through what was going on and who was speaking.
Outside of these two things, the whole book was incredible and really delivered on a lot of the motivations and the feelings we saw in the first book. Despite some of the events occurring outside of the timeframe for “The Forgotten and the Feared”, this book definitely should be read *after* that one, and before book 2 (“The Defiant and the Damned”). Brace yourself, though; you’re going to have to relive some of the most horrific, painful moments from book 1 from a completely different viewpoint, and it hurts every bit as badly.
This book was a solidly entertaining read, and I devoured it in one sitting. I have so many theories and hopes and fears for the next book, and all of it is because of this one. All in all, an excellent addition to the series.
Read via Kindle straight after book 1 and LOVED IT!
I was disappointed initially when it stated that it was 'Nyalls story' (the prince with the two different coloured eyes who in book 1 hated the king and was planning to kill him along with the other FMCs sort of gf Mirelle).
However, I loved it showing how Book 1 all came together (e.g. when and why the trials/dragon fights with the humans candidates were created, how Os came to be the trainer of the humans, as well as The Beast fighting and killing the dragons, and why Os dislikes the prince so much).
It's making me want to go back and read book 1 because whenever we got a scene of the two MC and we are hearing it from his perspective (even though we got to have both perspectives in book 1, we didn't for every scene so it's nice seeing how he was thinking and reacting to the FMC). I want to go back and check if the conversations that are supposedly being repeated are word for word accurate 😂
I knew that it would end how Book 1 did with us knowing that os was alive, Amalia is in the woods with the prince, and Dyana and her sort of gf are in the land of the dragons and are unable to leave.
There have been hints that the Prince might also be Amalias mate as we were told that her kind can have more than 1...I however think it's obvious she should pick Os!

I’m not normally one to enjoy books that are just from another’s POV of something that I’ve already read, I tend to be bored because I already know the information, but I devoured this one. I don’t know if it’s all of the differing POV’s or the fact that we got new insight into characters and back stories that I didn’t know I so desperately wanted but this was so good. I literally devoured it in a day. I stopped my Christmas decorating rampage to read this book.
I loved getting to see Nyall and more of his character arc & growth. I LOVED seeing more of Os and his background. Why are tortured souls so HOT?? And Amalia…well she’s the badass girl crush I never knew I had but here we are. Her spirit is just so strong and amazing. If you don’t have a girl crush on her you clearly didn’t read the same book(s) as me.
I can’t wait for The Defiant and the Damned in February. This book has only renewed my impatience and need for more.
HUGE shoutout to EC Garrett for an ARC of this book. The Forgotten & the Feared was my first ever ARC and I’ll forever be thankful for that and getting me into the crazy world that is ARC reading & book socials. 🖤💋
OH MY GOD. Is it February 25 yet?! I don't think I can last another month without The Defiant and The Damned.
I knew the minute I started reading The Broken and The Brave, I would only put it down when I was finished. It's been a bit of time since I've visited these characters, so it brought back all of the emotions to see them again. This novella is divided into 3 sections - before The Forgotten and The Feared, during, and after. THE AFTER?! E.C....you can't play with my heart like that!
I absolutely loved this novella, it's the perfect read to prepare you for The Defiant and The Damned. It has me super excited to get back into this world. I highly recommend you check out book 1 in this series before reading this one as an understanding of the world, society, and characters will impact your reading experience.
I'm also predicting a throuple in our future...If we don't get an Os, Amalia, and Nyall pairing, I will be SO upset. E.C....pretty please?
Part novella, part prequel and with alternating POVs from the characters I desperately wanted to hear more from, EC Garrett delivers an enthralling and tragic backstories full of love, friendship, betrayal and revenge.
This story can be read in tandem with Book 1, The Forgotten and the Feared but I LOVED reading it afterwards and discovering the secrets behind some of questions and thoughts that nagged me in TF&TF.
Remus ‘Os’ Ostia and Prince Nyall Drayven POV's really amplifies their characters' strength, loyalty & things they've both had to sacrifice in their positions. With its heavy anticipation and fast-pace, I devoured this story in one setting. It will leave you on the edge of your seat the entire way, long for redemption and ache for the next story!! Absolutely a MUST-READ for this fiery, devastating fantasy series!!
I started this book right after reading book one and… didn’t love it. I skimmed through the middle of the book that’s really just another POV of the first book.
The “before” part of the book gets into the relationship between Nyall and Os and why it turned sour. I loved reading more about the backstory of both characters but wasn’t into them “falling in love”. Like it just didn’t fit for me. Also the whole reason Os hates Nyall is stupid in my opinion and Nyall doesn’t deserve it. Which just made me like Os less.
The “after” part was beautiful and I loved it.
I would recommend reading the before and after, the “during” didn’t have enough new information to hold my interest after just finishing book one but there is a couple POV chapters from Taran that were sweet and worth the read.

This was an excellent addition to the Dragon Queen series, giving the reader more insight to the world and characters that inhabit it. You should really read The Forgotten and The Feared first, to get a foundation with the world and other characters before diving into this one. Because this is a collection of smaller stories, you could easily read this in multiple sittings, one story at a time. But I must admit I found it hard to set down between stories, as I just wanted to know what the next one would bring! Garrett has once again brought everything to life before the reader’s eyes, truly immersing you in her world. Cannot recommend this series enough for grimdark epic fantasy lovers!
It was really nice to get a few extra details and character perspectives. HOWEVER! The amount of mistakes in this book started to irritate me. Missing words, missing letters and the worst for me was that there were multiple mistakes in the book where the author mixed up the perspective a chapter was written in. Ie: we are reading from Nyall’s perspective and it would say: Nyall is staring back at me. This happened multiple times and in the end just became irritating. This is a short book and surely you can make edits later on? If not, there needs to be better proof reading as it’s disrupting the story telling and is becoming too frequent which is a shame.
This was just everything!! I didn't even realise I how much I needed this until I got stuck in. Being able to learn about Os & Nyall's past and why there was so much tension between them. Viewing things from their POV, especially Nyall, was just amazing, and the other parts of the story that tied in the information from TF&TF.
It was beautifully written and the story drew me in - I devoured 80% straight away and finished it the next evening.
If you loved TF&TF, this is a MUST before TD&TD comes out in February.
What can I say that you don't already know? If book 1 destroyed me, this one did too. This gave us so much background to understand what happened before and after the event of book 1. Now I get it, and it does help, but it does it hurt less. This one was short but had so much meaning behind it. I can't wait for book 2 because I need more. I was literally at the edge of my seat again. This quote on my post is the one that broke me the most. "He's gone."
Ok... This book had me addicted immediately. Part 1 provides background of Os and Nyall. Which made me love Os more than I already did. Part 2 provides events we already know from different POVs and more details. THEN we get to find out what Amalia and Nyall were up to after the stadium collapse... We also get to find out about some others that I can't spoil. This book re-broke my heart. AND made my heart happy again. I am so excited for book 2. If you loved book 1, this is a must read!!!
This Novella ties in perfectly with book 1 and also gives us a little teaser into book 2.. seeing the events of book 1 from other characters perspectives really brings the whole story together so far... I cried at the horse again... poor old Taran... 😢 I can't wait to see what happens when everyone realises that Os is still alive and what's happening to him.. I see a three way love triangle on the horizon.. now to wait patiently for book 2
This was such a fun novella filled with so much emotion! I loved getting more back story and the alternate POVs! Nyall is such a cool character and I really enjoyed seeing things through his eyes especially. Even more I loved the insight to what happens in between books and I am even more excited to see what happens in book 2.
I love anything GC Garrett writes. This was my first indie author and I’m captivated with her writing!
This book was from the MMC’s POV from TF&TF (book one.) This was the perspective I didn’t know I needed, I am so ready for book 2 to come out in February to continue this story because it is so amazing!
Wow! Between book 1 and this, the writing has improved SO MUCH; the world is so much more fluid and I was immersed. In terms of the plot? I couldn't put it down. I have an assignment due this weekend... Have I touched it? No. Did I finish this book? Yes. I raced through it, and struggled to put it down. EC Garrett weaves magyk into her books, and the storylines are addictive.
I love getting the different points of views from book one. I also love learning a little bit that happened before and after book one of this amazing series. Now I seriously can’t wait to read book two. Especially with that last chapter! Very highly recommend this series to all epic fantasy lovers!
