Disclaimers: I know Saturn personally and generally I don't read a lot of poetry. They usually don't "touch" me and analyzing each work reminds me of high school.
I was truly surprised by how much emotion these poems provoked. Some may be because I know a little about Saturn's upbringing and life, but it was mostly the language that flowed in each and every verse.
The next poem was always my favorite, but if I had to pick one "Secrets" touched me the most. "Cruelty of the Feline" was reminiscent of my current reading obsession and made me laugh. "Gardens" was the reason for each poem, the binding of the book, and the essence of Saturn.
I enjoyed taking my time with each poem and the book over several days🥰
Disclaimer: I am Saturn's sister but, even if I wasn't I'd still be entirely enamored with this collection.
Pondering Flora is at turns whimsical and profound, much like life. Saturn knows how to weave dream-like poetry like a fate weaving experiences into fully realized lives. They manage to run the emotional gamut of grief, trauma, joy, love and humor. Much like life, this collection is complex and beautiful.
Saturn has a unique ability to make poetry more accessible than most poets. There's a time and a place for the academic, complex stuff, but PF is written for people who are looking to be seen. to be heard, who want to laugh through the tears.
if you're looking to have your heart broken and reshaped into something even more beautiful, please do yourself a favor and read Pondering Flora.
Purchased my copy as soon as it was available, and so happy I did. What a whirlwind of emotion. I feel like I've lived an entire life by the poet's side in the span of 100 pages. Highly recommend.
