A Delightfully Twisted Erotic Thriller!
"Life is all about choices, and the choices we make every day affect our lives. But it's hard to make the right choices if we have no true sense of self. Wouldn't you agree?"
This was an Erotic debut from an author who generally works in horror, and the result is both genre-bending and incredibly entertaining.

The blurb for this book references Kiss the Girls and I can't argue with that assessment... If Alex Cross was also abducted and kept at the mercy of Casanova.

Hyde is a serial abductor who keeps his victims for a week and releases them physically unharmed back into the world. None of the victims will talk about their experience with the mysterious Hyde, and the NYPD are left chasing a ghost. They are no closer to catching their man when he abducts his eighth victim...

But this time, it's personal...

Samantha Burnett
Her weakness was not the deep, uncompromising love for her sister. Her weakness was herself. And the maniac calling himself Hyde already knew it.
Hyde has made a formidable enemy by abducting the twin sister of NYPD Detective Samantha Burnett. The ball-busting investigator is ready to kill Hyde for taking her sister Simone.

Sam has a kind of pseudo-psychic connection with her sister, and the connection is particularly strong during sex... Shared feelings and sensations and all of that... But the connections is severed as soon as Simone falls into Hyde's clutches.

I was entertained while watching the investigation unfold for the first 25% of the book, and then it became infinitely more intriguing when Sam's sister is suddenly returned to civilization... The ordeal was over for Simone, but it was just beginning for Sam at that point.

"He took the wrong sister."

"What?"

"It was on the card. It had your name on it." He raised his head and looked her in the eye. "You're next."

She stared back at him as she let his words sink in. "Let him come."
....and that was the moment I found myself completely engrossed in this story. Metaphorically on the edge of my seat...

Hyde believes he is liberating his victims of their sexual self-restraint. He is looking for a woman to be his perfect match. In order to find her, he snatches candidates from their homes and puts them through a series of tests. Hyde has a team of ominously masked henchmen (and women) which handle his victims and allow him to remain unseen...

This is a story more about sexual self-discovery than any sort of non-con type of structure. While I certainly consider this to be deep into dub-con territory, it wasn't as, well, rape-y as I had anticipated.

That being said, there's a mountain of material which some readers might find objectionable.
This is not a romance,
No Stockholm Syndrome,
There are no heroes in this story...

However, it felt as if the author was pulling his punches.
Perhaps I was expecting something more sinister based on the blurb?

If the primary focus of this book was Samantha's journey of sexual self-discovery, then we were robbed of the key moments in her transformation.

The book was Dark but not pitch black...
Twisted but not enough to make you squirm...

I feel that the blurb sets you up for something so much more than what is actually delivered on the page. However, the decision to soften some of the blows will endear this book to a wider audience.

It was certainly an entertaining read - Filled with vivid imagery and sexual situations as wild and frenzied as a fever dream.

In sum, Hyde is a story about a quest. Not the Dungeons and Dragons/sword and sorcery kind. But the type of quest that many people never even embark on: one of self-discovery. The phrase “finding out who you really are” is featured more than once, and it is used well. Not something I come across often when given an erotic horror story to read.

For some readers, a few of the subjects may be off-putting. For me, one of the marks of a good author is how he or she handles writing what can be considered difficult subject matter for the majority of the population. Churchill handles these subjects—kidnapping and voyeurism, to name a few—with a deft pen. (er… keyboard?) But at the conclusion of this story, even the initial feelings you have about Hyde’s actions are turned upside down and inside out.

This is truly an erotic horror, so brace yourself. Once you’ve decided to strap in, Churchill creates an enthralling experience for the reader. His imagery is creative, but not over-worked. He used his words craftily, bringing each character’s emotions to the reader in a vivid bas-relief, making reading Hyde an almost tactile experience. Both fear and sexual pleasure are given equal attention and the writing of each is powerfully effective.

Hyde is also peppered with pictures, shown like stacks of Polaroid photos within the text. I’m pleased to say that each artist is credited with copyright for their work just inside the cover.

One of my favorite terms used in Hyde was “pained satisfaction”. It ties into a neat little bow what most of the characters face. I must admit, I didn’t forsee the ending, as I sometimes do with erotic horror. There’s no way for me to describe it here without giving spoilers, but the finale was a fit ending for this tale and an excellent way to wrap up this quest for self-knowledge.

Hyde reflects its namesake. Disturbing, yet recognizable.

Not the type of subject matter I enjoy. Reasonably well written. I do have another book by Churchill that I'm very interested in reading, hopefully more my kind of thing.
