Dr. Doom has broken Dr. Octopus out of prison as the final mover in the latest plan for world conquest. Using Ock's expertise to help him draw on the arcane energies of the Negative Zone, Doom has found a way to wield absolute power. Now the only thing standing between Doom and his goals are Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four--and one of the F.F. is already Doom's prisoner!
The web-slinger and the world's premier super-team join forces to stop Doom's mad plan in an incredible new adventure!
This is the concluding volume of the Doom's Day trilogy of prose novels, an interesting experiment where the publisher had three different authors write the individual volumes of the overall story. In this one, Dr. Doom is more of a major player rather than just calling the plays from the sidelines. He has enlisted Dr. Octopus to aid him in drawing power from the Negative Zone in order to further his plans of world domination. Naturally, with the NZ involved, Peter has to team up with the FF to try to stop the evil pair. I always thought Spidey's team-ups in the comics with the First Family were among his best. Reed and Victor have some good exchanges here, and I thought the characterization here was the best done of the trilogy. Excelsior!
This is it! The end of the Doom's day trilogy and truly this book surpassed my expectations! To be honest the last two books, while not terrible, didn't really inspire greatness so my expectations were kinda low to begin with. Maybe this book has the upper hand on the others for being the end of a trilogy and therefore doesn't have to constrain how much it can go over board. Either way this was a pretty fun read.
Pros.
Characters yet again are done very well ESPECIALLY Dr. Doom himself.
There are call backs to past books in the trilogy and even others not in the trilogy itself kind of making a Marvel book universe. A nice reward for good boys like me who have read everything before this.
The stakes are high and almost every character either has a role to play or doing something important.
Cons
Without Spoilers, I am a little disappointed about how the heroes win in the end.
Some characters do so little that they might as well not be in the book.
All in all I am in favor of more books like this. The chemistry between the villains working together for the first time and heroes working together with a lot of experience in doing so contrasts very well. The action is pretty good and this book does a good job of showing each characters strength. Even if you haven't read the last two books this one is a recommend from me, ESPECIALLY if you like the fantastic four or a fan of Dr. Doom.
Dr. Doom aids Dr. Octopus in escaping from jail and being reunited with his tentacles. But Doom isn't a kind ally-- he enslaves Doom-- putting him to work on a project and a plot to adapt the infinity engine (from book # 2) to draw energy from the negative zone.
This novel does a decent job of recreating the characters. The Fantastic Four are fun and Dr. Octopus is a clever enough incarnation-- but finally, Doom isn't a supporting player, but the main bad guy in this novel.
The most interesting part of the book are the exchanges between Doom and Reed (his prisoner) in which Richards chides Doom for not being creative at all, but rather, simply piggy backing on the discoveries and inventions of others. Doom, is as always, a pompous egotists and the story gets better.
However, maybe I missed something, but I never really understood what the first book in the series (where Hulk replicants are created) had to do with the ultimate plotline.
This is an interesting trilogy-- but rather than focusing on the heroes we know and love, there is far too much involvement of the S.A.F.E. (sort of like S.H.E.I.L.D) crew. Spidey finds a piece of a robot, but it really doesn't play a part in discovering much of anything.
Fun reading, but nothing overly exciting or incredible.
I just completed the third installment in the Doom's Day series and am glad I decided to read them all. While there is a link between all three books, they very easily can be read separately. I have thoroughly enjoyed all three reads. This book I gave the lowest score to (the other two books I gave 4 stars). I hate the five star system because of times like these. The other two books were a low four for me, but this is a high three because all of the spelling and grammatical errors in the book. Who was the editor on this? Why was this not thoroughly looked over. While I enjoyed the combination of the Fantastic Four with Spider-Man going up against Dr Doom and Dr Octopus, I found myself getting hung up on the constant mistakes that were made by the writer. I would recommend this book to young adults that are into comic books but want to progress onto full length novels. While this is not a literary masterpiece, it is an enjoyable read.
A novel that is set in the Marvel universe. This is book 3 of a trilogy but it can be read as a stand alone novel. In this one, Doctor Doom is trying to harness the energy from another dimension. To achieve this result, he enlists Doctor Octopus to aid him. This turn of events cause the Fantastic Four and Spider-man to unite.
This was a decent read. The author did a good job with the characters esp. Doctor Doom. I had no problem hearing his narcissistic personality. The only issue I had was I wished Spider-man had a few more quips. The adventure is a little slow to start but the final battle was good esp. the part Doctor Octopus played. This story is a small adventure in the whole universe and does not have any affect on it.
If you are looking for a quick adventure with well known characters, this book works.
After a bad book, I wondered how would be the last book of the serie. Reuniting the authors of the first book was a good idea they know the characters very well.
Not much action in the first half a little bit slow to build the momentum. Final confrontation not really epic but the serie was a really good superhero plot.
Villains are great Dr.Doom and specially Dr.Octopus who play an interesting part in the story.
Again probably only good for Marvel fan. Pleasant easy read and easy to forget
A satisfying conclusion to the "Doom's Day" trilogy of novels. In this one, Spider-Man teams up with the Fantastic Four to thwart a plot by Doctor Doom. Longer review here: http://eyesandearsblog.blogspot.com/2...
