From Wilderness to Glory: Lent and Easter for Everyone

Rate this book
Think, pray, and reflect through the stories of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.

In this volume, N. T. Wright guides you on a journey through the Gospels and Scripture, compiling passages from his widely popular New Testament for Everyone series. We reflect on the practice of lament during Lent, the celebration of Easter, and how you cannot have one without the other.

Wright provides a daily devotional for the Lent and Easter season. Each day includes his translation of a Scripture passage, words of reflection, and questions for reflection or discussion.

"’Where have you laid him?' Jesus asks Mary and the others. 'They have taken away my master,’ says Mary Magdalene just a week or two later, 'and I don't know where they have laid him' (20.13).
Listen to the echoes between the story of Lazarus and that of Jesus himself. That's part of the reason John has told the story at all… 'Come and see,’ they respond, as Jesus had responded to the early disciples' enquiry as to where he was staying (1.46). It is the simplest of invitations, and yet it goes to the heart of Christian faith. 'Come and see,’ we say to Jesus, as we lead him, all tears, to the place of our deepest grief and sorrow. 'Come and see,' he says to us in reply, as he leads us through the sorrow to the place where he now dwells in light and love and resurrection glory.”

I don't have much to say about this one. There's some thoughtful commentary that I hadn't considered before, so I appreciated some new perspective, and I valued the discussion we got out of it in my Sunday school class.

A Lenten and Easter Season Devotional

Renowned Bible scholar and Christian author N.T. Wright offers a helpful daily (except Sundays, other than Easter itself, following a strict definition of Lent) devotional to guide the reader with a disciplined approach through the most important season of the faith in “From Wilderness to Glory”. My church selected it for the 2025 season, and I found it a good addition to my normal ongoing devotionals. Beginning in prologue on Ash Wednesday, Wright follows a spiritual journey with Jesus using weekly themes (wilderness, crowds, prayer, friends, enemies, and Holy Week in Jerusalem), Holy Week itself centers on the culminating events of the end of that week, and a final Easter season week is added to consider the most important theology of Jesus’ purpose. Each daily reading ends with thoughts for specific reflection. It covers many thoughtful topics in a highly relatable and accessible form and is a recommended addition to the season often thought of as a time for giving up something.

This book was my first Lenten study, and I enjoyed the experience. Each day from Lent through Easter Week (except for Sundays), N.T. Wright guides the reader through the life and ministry of Jesus with carefully chosen Bible passages and mini sermons on each. He provides thoughtful questions, which I wish I would have been in a group setting to discuss, as well as always provides the reader with a clear message of "This is what this means for us today." Would recommend to new Christians or anyone who needs a refresher on the core messages of Jesus's ministry.

4..7 Very Good seasonal devotion for Lent and the first week of Easter

A defy solid daily devotional for Lent; but my expectation were high because the author was N T Wright! I just kept feeling the messages should have dug deeper Ingo the vast treasures of scripture and brought forth more gems Gor people; I especially found the addition first week off waste (without continuing throughout the season of Easter to be underwhelming and to have missed the point of resurrection ANF ascension almost entirely!!

A wonderful Lent devotional.

The scripture reading for the day was written out, followed by "unpacking" it and commentary.

Wright is intentional about looking at scripture through the eyes of the intended audience, their culture and world view.

As a result, my heart was encouraged and filled with hope as these familiar scriptures took on new and deeper meanings.

I absolutely started reading this book last lent, and never finished it. I'm grateful that I didn't shelve it and forget about it because I did read it this year and it was a really lovely lenten devotional.

Wright's meditations were thoughtful, insightful, well researched and brought me new insights into the gospels and the stories leading up to Easter. The stories about Jesus and his relationships, how he was inside the city, out in the wilderness, with the crowds, and dealt with both the joyful and the difficult. I really appreciated, unlike most devotionals that quit on Easter, this one continued, giving you additional Easter week to reflect.
