I have been really behind with this series. I just finished my arc copy. I've still got two more to read before I get caught up. luckily as far as I could tell this book was very well edited. the few mistakes that I found I did send to a publisher to have fixed. it took me a bit to get through this one. for whatever reason I kept putting it down and coming back to it. the ending on this one was rather spectacular though and I liked it.

7/10 because I had put it down a couple of times to read other things. that ending though definitely brought it up to four stars.

holy moly!

Best book of the series!! This was EVERYTHING!! We start off with a bang. And have numerous explosions of battles, world building, character expansion etc, and then we end with an even bigger bang! Where is book 5? We need it here today!

Just okay.

I found most of the book quite boring (especially when i compared it to Oleg Sapphire's very similar series " the hunter's code"). Neither the business building and minor intrigues nor the - mostly juvenile-military academy plot were really compelling as not much happened at all. Only after 90% there was some action but that could not save the book for me..

Cadet Morozov (Living Ice Book 4): A Portal Progression Fantasy Series by Dmitry Sheleg

Plot Summary

Detailed Review

Immersive Progression Fantasy: The core allure of this book—and indeed the series—is classic portal progression fantasy. The narrative thrives on Ivan’s tangible growth, tackling martial ranks, strategy, and survival in a world where magic is both a weapon and a social currency.
Academy Life with High Stakes: The author skillfully captures the tension of academy trials, from grueling inspections to combative demonstrations. The iconic line, “Alert! Formation in the first-floor hall! Uniform number four! Move it, gentlemen! This isn’t your family estate!” perfectly signals the start of Ivan’s true challenges.
World-Building & Society: The narrative continues to expand the series’ world—ancient bloodlines, demon-laden wastelands, and martial-magic hierarchies all weave into a compelling backdrop. Considerable advancement in world-depth and strategy stands out in this latest volume.
Pacing & Tone: While many fans describe the book as thrilling and well-paced—full of revelations, camaraderie, and combat—some readers found the early chapters slightly slow or slice-of-life heavy. Nevertheless, most agree the dramatic climax and cliffhangers deliver strong emotional payoff.

Rating (out of 5 glowing stars)

⭐⭐⭐☆ ☆ (3 out of 5 stars)

Strengths worth 3 stars:

Robust character progression and academy-style trials.
Expansive, compelling world-building with intrigue and magic systems.
An emotionally resonant and satisfying ending that amps up anticipation for the next volume.

Why not 5 stars?
Some pacing issues early on—especially for readers looking for nonstop action—dampen the experience before the story truly takes flight.

In essence, Cadet Morozov succeeds brilliantly in advancing Ivan’s journey, elevating its immersive fantasy elements, and setting up a riveting cliffhanger. If you enjoy portal progression fantasies that blend martial magic, elite academies, and noble intrigue, this installment delivers—and leaves you eager for Book 5.

Okay this book see's things pick up some, with better flow it felt like, which was an improvement as compared to book three which was awkward.

What struck me while reading:

-Very few errors in the text not counting missing scene and a few POV shift markers. ***

- Somewhat odd here that Ivan at age 13+ is still referred to as 5 foot nothing tall and still looking ridiculously young when.. In the prior book its mentioned that he'd grown some and that he was now definitely a teenager in the physical sense.

-The author also has the mc's older sisters behaving as if they're 12 year old brainless ditzes instead of being several years older than his physical body – mid to late teenaged years. Just about as close to non entities as it gets with odd spurts of something a few times which just makes the lack more obvious.

-There is also passage of time/chronology issues with the logic of what happens during the early Cadet School part of the story. Also at least one minor questionable plot point in Godomir not having killed a Demon before.. with who's son he is, along with where he was born and grew up, one would think his father would have seen better to his education.

-

-There is more fade to black time skips with follow on Tell sequences. Also a lack of foreshadowing as to wider worldbuilding plotlines between books.. as in a lack of hints to lay the ground for what is disclosed in this book.

-Some odd discrepancies in descriptors, like Theophane repeatedly being referred to as a Knight (oddly as if it holds separate meaning) when he's been a S+rank Hero, for a long time – a contemporary of Ivan's dead Grandfather Prince Morosov. Another with a side character referred to as a militant by rank the sentence after having been called a hybrid Hero/Mage(common) by rank.
-Below is an excerpt from the book where instead of, for example, calling/thinking of Theophane as something like Old Hero.. Knight is used:
“Let’s just hope Father didn’t act like a pompous noble in front of Theophane and gave him the reception he deserved, went through the documents and so on,” I thought, remembering the task I’d given the Knight.

- I really liked the Ending of this one BTW. Bumps up the rating by .5

I received a review copy of this book.

Wow, is there progression in this book.
We see many advancements, multiple pieces of the world being fleshed out, and near the end, some serious battling, and of course, there's the typical academy bullying going on the whole time.
If you've wondered about any of the background material in this world, this is the book to read, you'll get most of your questions answered.
Great addition to the series, looking forward to the next book.

Good read!

So there were parts that were really granular on slice-of-life of a military academy student and some time jumps that randomly occurred because of translation issues, but overall excellent read. The story advances really well. I’m not thrilled about the cost of the book, but there’s enough meat to keep me interested for the next installment.

Strategy throughout

The most interesting part of this book was the strategy used by the key players as they jockeyed for power and connections. The scariest part was the last chapter with a surprise ending. Loved it

I love that Ivan doesn't simply OP his way out of every conflict. And what an ending!

Not bad, but the military training stuff felt an awful lot like padding.
