In the battle between good and evil, humans have never been more than collateral damage. Now they are prey. Mankind doesn’t need a hero. It needs a sinner.

Corrupt. Wicked. Nefarious. Contemptible....

The Baddest Boys in History are back!

You read about them in school. Now learn the truth. Real men. No vampires, no werewolves, no magic. Just down and dirty raw power—sin to sin, evil to evil, bad to bad. They fight for humanity. It was that or eternal damnation.

They agreed to risk their souls. No one told them they would lose their hearts.

THE BASTARD
Vike died in blood, in battle, in betrayal. His ruthlessness was second only to his brutality. Now one woman makes his blood sing and he’ll stop at nothing to save her. He only has to face half of Hell to do it.

Lacy is unknowingly descended from an ancient Holy line. Someone is slowly destroying her life and wants her dead. A fierce Viking comes to her rescue, and in his arms, she finds more than safety.
If Vike can’t protect Lacy, he’ll have to kill her. And for a bastard, what’s one woman worth when the entire world is in jeopardy?

This was my first read by this author!

And I loved it!

I cannot wait for the rest of the series!

For me, it is a unique refreshing completely new take on a genre that is filled with werewolves and shifters!

As I said in my updates as I was reading, a book, that is the first in the series, and only 3% in, that can have me upset about a character and their demise, has got to be good!

I loved the banter between all the guys. Their attitude and outlook. It was great and I cannot wait for the rest of the series! (although I really want a Zale or Nomad book asap!)

I really liked Sela and the amount of history that was given, the background to the entire storyline never felt as if it was given in such a way as to just dump it all on you.

Vike and Lacy were a great couple - Vike was a big softy when it came to his Lace and Lacy was the mother hen all the guys did not even know they needed!

If you love PNR, then you need to read this book!

I need the next book yesterday!!!!

OMG! Loved this story...

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Kelley and I must say, it was beyond anything I expected. This one is a very unique take in this genre. It's intense, beautiful, lyrical, hilarious, loving, heartbreaking and sensual. The history lesson you get here and the way things are woven, how information is given, is not only clear in its reveal, but it's given in a way where you don't have information overload or become bored. Especially since this is a book that's world building. Nothing dragged. Every aspect was interesting/intriguing.

Vike & Lacy I loved their dynamic. Hot, heartwarming, heartbreaking & intense. *blushes*

I fell in love with every character in this book. (I'm really crushin on Myth, BIG TIME. I WANT his book like NOW!)

I gasped out loud with scenes concerning the villains. I KNEW this was going to be a great read for me when only 3% in the novel, my heart was completely shattered. I couldn't nor did I want to look away after that... The only thing I regret is starting this series before all or at least 3 or 4 books were already out. (Shellie, this is your fault, woman!) LOL

I can't wait to dive into the next one. Fall is just too far away *pouts*

This one ends on an HEA. But it's a series with an ongoing plot.
I strongly suggest you start with book 1, if you are reading this review after the other books have been released. It sets up the story and all the characters. The world building etc..

I would HIGHLY recommend this read.

This was a great story! I loved both Erik and Lacy and their story unexpectedly sucked me in from the beginning and I couldn't stop until I was done (I had to force myself to sleep!). This is the first story I've read by this author and based on this I will definitely be reading more of her work.

In this story, Sela (an Angel) is tasked by God with dispatching "the Third" which is the heavenly beings (about a third of the total host of heavenly beings) that were exiled from heaven along with the devil (known by the name Samael in this book) and became his minions. Sela was allowed 77 Awakenings, where she found warriors that died their first death and brings them back to life to fight as her soldiers against evil. Sela decided that she needed evil to fight evil so she chose warriors from throughout the ages that most termed as evil but were really just warriors that were ruthless and willing to do whatever was needed to win their wars. Over the years most of the 77 have died during the many battles and the few that are left battle on.

Lacy is a cook at a diner. She has a sister, Annie, who works as a paramedic. They were both orphaned in their teens when their parents died so they're very close and Lacy feels very protective of her sister. Lacy hasn't tried to find a better job as she likes mothering and taking care of people so she loves cooking for her customers and treating her regulars like family.

Erik (aka Vike) is an Awakened warrior that follows Sela. He had a hard life and a hard afterlife as well. Erik hasn't had much softness in his life but recently has been crushing on a cook at a local diner. He happens to show up early on day, watching her, only to see 3 "leaches" (low level evil minions) attack her.

Erik and Gen (another awakened warrior) are outside the diner when Lacy is attacked. They rush to her aid and kill the minions but not before they manage to cause some permanent damage. Erik checks out Lacy, only to realize that she's not just a regular person, she's a Scion (someone with a bloodline that included something heavenly in her way distant past). Samael (the devil) collects the souls of Scions when he can because he can make them in to more minions. Erik knows he has to protect Lacy. Apparently, once a Scion has had an attack by evil she has 40 days during which her immunity builds up. If she can stay out of Samael's hands for that long he can't do anything to her. If he gets her before that then he can torture her until she swears to server him. Erik reports back to Sela and his team and is told to stay with Lacy and protect her and be charming if that's what it takes to stay near her. To be honest, I don't think this was much of a hardship since he was already kind of in to her and didn't want his fellow Awakened getting near her. Erik goes to see Lacy in the hospital and offers her a lift home. He soon has her believing that he's part of a security firm that's on the trail of a cult that's targeted her for iffy reasons. Lacy isn't sure about it all but she can't help but feel like Erik is someone she can trust so she gives him the benefit of the doubt. He watches her at her home at first but when things get out of hand, Erik takes her to their team's headquarters (H2Q) where she's sure to be safe.

As Lacy starts staying at H2Q she finds that everything is absolutely filthy and there's just messiness and grossness all over. Lacey doesn't have anything else to do and finds a nice kitchen (thankfully clean because none of the guys cook) and she starts cooking for the guys and then also starting the clean the general areas and Erik's apartment in particular. She doesn't have much with her and Erik's nice enough to provide her with cloths and other stuff she needs. While Erik's been protecting her, he's been trying to keep from sleeping with her (partially because of some injuries she had from the attack), although there has been kissing. Once they get to H2Q, Lacy is done waiting and seduces Erik (not that it takes much). This starts a few weeks of them happily being together as pseudo boyfriend/girlfriend while she cooks and cleans for the group (except Zale, who is a big asshole who better improve his attitude greatly before he gets his own book!) and gives all the men some love and affection that they haven't had in a very long time. She does realize that Erik's explanation isn't completely on the up and up but she likes him and the others so she has faith that he's on the right side, even if his methods aren't always right. As they spend more time together, both of them start to have very strong feelings for each other. Unfortunately, drama is brought by Zale causing problems between Lacy and Erik and it takes some work for things to get worked out. Just when that seems settled, evil minions attack and more bad! The ending is a bit traumatic but I'll just say that things work out and I loved the ending. A bit sad, but Lacy and Erik do end up with a HEA.

This was a great story. Although Lacy and Erik got their HEA, the action part of the series storyline isn't complete and should be interesting as the next books came out. I really loved the camaraderie of Erik and his Awakened brothers (well all except Zale) and their banter with each other was fun to read. The world building was well done, it felt like the story had the right amount of description, not so much you get bored but not so little you get confused. Lacy was a great heroine and I really liked her a lot (and I loved her "talk" with Zale at the end). Erik was a bad guy (at least he saw himself that way), even when fighting for the right team. Lacy made Erik feel like a hero, made him want that change in him to be true and, although he didn't believe he deserved it, he recognized it for the gift it is. I love them together and was so happy with the way things worked out. I can't wait to read the next books in the series. I'd highly recommend this book. 2 thumbs up! :D

‘Lacy called him her hero. He wished it was true.’

Jenny:
Wow! Gitte, we certainly got our money’s worth in this 500+ page riveting story where we got to meet some of the most alpha, biggest and somewhat misunderstood bad arses of history in the form of the Foresaken didn’t we? I loved the perspective the author delivered on history and mythology, where good vs evil and where humans are merely collateral damage. The third person narrative allowed us so much insight into the characters and story, and the talent of Inez Kelley’s writing ensured it never felt bogged down. I was addicted and I loved it!!!

“History is but a flawed record and humankind an unreliable narrator.”

Lacy our heroine is taken in by the Foresaken (giving nothing away here) for her own protection where she takes on a role natural to her in the form of nurturing and caring for them and Erik in particular. Lacy was such a giving, loving, loyal, strong and beautiful character and I adored her.

“When a person has someone to fight for, they fight harder. Love isn’t a handicap, it’s fuel.”

Erik was a kick arse alpha protector of humanity and a fierce protector of Lacy. He’s a strong, dependable and brutal warrior, devoid of love who revels in the tender touch shown towards him by Lacy and whose soul screamed out for the warmth, passion and sweetness he derived from her. I bloody loved this man; in fact, I fell in love with all the Foresaken and can’t wait for all their stories

“She makes me feel like…like I’m better than I really am.”

There was so much happening in The Bastard that I was afraid to draw a breath. I was completely immersed in every exhilarating minute in this world Inez Kelley so vividly brought to life. This author delivered a refreshingly different and addictive first instalment that will ensure I will be veraciously delving into every book in this series. You felt the same didn’t you Gitte?

Gitte: Absolutely, I loved everything about this book and know without a doubt I’ll be devouring every single instalment in this series. I’m a paranormal girl at heart, I don’t get to wear my paranormal cape as often as I’d like, so when I do I revel in it and hope it’s a bloody good one. I was not disappointed with The Bastard. It had real heart, battle and intensity. Inez Kelley wrote a blinder here and its size is of epic proportions. What an introduction to a new series!

“How do you know what to believe?”

“You listen to your heart, Lacy.”

There was a lot of information to take in so I read at snail’s pace making sure I understood and could place everyone involved in history. At times I had to re-read a few bits just to make sure I didn’t miss out on anything important but wow, Inez Kelley really has a brilliant concept here and the intricacies of history is detailed and so bloody well executed. Right down to the Viking, Erik drinking Grøn Tuborg, which as a Dane myself is my fave beer! It’s all about the details right?!

“I’m not a good guy. I’m not a hero.” … “You are to me.”

I loved every single character in this first instalment; they all intrigued and fascinated me; their stories and their banter had me hook line and sinker. The passion and action was spot on and it really was a hot and thrilling ride!

“Love is the deadliest weapon out there.”

Erik and Lacy, what can I say, I fell in love with both characters. They each had such depth, their emotions tangible and strengths incredible on their own merit. They perfectly complimented each other and their story was incredibly addictive. What a great start to a new series making this paranormal girl very excited! Bring it on!!!

J&G: We love getting back into our PNR groove this year and The Bastard was a fantastic and gripping PNR story which was refreshing, sexy, thrilling and funny. There were many surprises and revelations along the way and the banter between the Foresaken was so entertaining – it had us giggling many a times. There is so much we want to know, so many questions left unanswered and we’ll be 1clicking the next book as soon as it’s out! Rex’s story promises to be amazing! A definite recommend for fans looking for their next paranormal fix!

Intriguing start to a new series. The banter/back and forth between the guys had me giggling in places while reading it.

Since I knew, from the author's post on her blog, that these characters were villains in history, I tried to figure out who they were as I read. Of those in the book, I had figured out two of the six before the "reveal" happened later on in the story.

I debated putting Vike on my "crazy in love/possessive hero" and decided while he wasn't as OTT as some heroes on this list, he did deserve his spot there because he was never the same after Lacy told him "Thank you" the first time he saved her. He went from almost killing her to making sure no one hurt and/or touched her, even the men around him. One of the many things I loved about Vike & Lacy were the notes they wrote & hid for each other to find in random places. For such a badass dude, he was also such a softy too, when it came to Lacy.

A 4.5 from me.

This book was picked as a "dare" read in a group challenge. I had not read anything by this author, or even heard any buzz about this book...and all I can say is... Why Not?

Where to start with a review for this one? What a unique idea and a tremendous job Ms. Kelley has done with the world-building in the first of what promises to be a stellar paranormal series. In a nutshell, take one Angel and let her choose warriors to fight on the earthly plane against the greatest evil of them all. She can choose from any warrior, and she chooses to "Awaken" some of the most notorious and reviled characters from human history. I won't give them away, as their identities are revealed in the book. This first book is about Vike, a notorious Viking warrior, and the human woman of holy origin he is charged to guard.

The writing itself is beautiful and extremely well done. The banter between these "bad boys" had, for me anyway, shades of J.R. Ward and the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Not that it's copied, don't get me wrong. But take ancient warriors and put them together in a modern setting...how do they assimilate and communicate? Ms. Kelley has got it just right in my opinion, the same way that Ward gets it right with her ancient vamps.

The other thing I should mention is the attention to detail and research that Ms. Kelley has done. As a bit of a history nerd, this is something I truly appreciate.

Can't wait to read the next book!

The first book in a new series by Ms. Kelley features some of the baddest men in history fighting on the side of good, in their own bad way. When the story begins, Lacy Cooper (a seemingly average woman who works as a cook in a local diner), is being watched by Vike and it’s clear that Vike’s intrigued with her but not quite sure why. As Lacy’s trying to open the diner she’s attacked by strange creatures with forked tongues whose touch leaves her in a stupor. After this attack, it becomes clear that someone’s trying to get Lacy, no matter what they have to do, or who they have to kill. Vike must either protect Lacy or kill her to keep her from otherworldly forces intent on using her soul to win the ultimate battle between good vs. evil.

The Really Good
I am very pleased that I listened to the recommendations for this book - it didn’t disappoint. This is an ongoing series, but it has an HEA and will feature different couples in each book, which is precisely the type of series I love.

The mythology/world-building is strong and I really liked that it’s grounded in actual historical figures with obvious liberties. I’ve always been intrigued by the “bad” guy - no one is all bad or all good, simply more or less complex, and this series makes you think twice about some of these men and why they are remembered as they were. The “heroes” have their nicknames, but they aren’t identified until very late in the story. I enjoyed trying to guess who they were and in some cases I was right.

But in the vein of Sherrilyn Kenyon, J.R. Ward and Gena Showalter, these alpha heroes have great camaraderie and witty banter, tension between some that can be mined for future story, and above all, a protective love for the heroine that I adore.

While there is alot of information given in this book to set up the ‘verse, I feel that it was easy enough to follow, with just enough information given without overwhelming the reader with too much exposition. Additionally, Lacy and Vike’s love grounds this tale, with Lacy showing Vike what true love is, a love that makes Vike want to be a better man. Lacy as a heroine was nurturing but not a doormat. All the secondary characters are given enough attention that I can easily see them carrying their own books, and I have to note that the women introduced, though there are few, are strong, complex characterizations and more than capable of carrying their own weight.

The Just Good
The comparisons to other series may not be a selling point for some, but in my opinion Ms. Kelley takes the best attributes of those series and makes it her own.

The Bottom Line
A great start to an intriguing new PNR/UF series, I’d highly recommend it.

I loved it, adored it ... this is PR as it should be ...

Vike is one of the Foresaken. A group of warriors who is responsible for protecting humanity. as the bad guys try to kidnapp a woman, who could be the last piece for the destruction of heaven, he has to go all-in.

I loved everything in this book. the storyline with the background is really amazing - I loved the idea, which is obviousely planned for a whole series and provides an interesting story for this book. not all questions are answered and I can't wait to get the next book

the characters are simply amazing:
Lacy is not a kick-ass heroine as I normally prefer them but I loved her. she has a strong character and does everything for the people she loves. She was able to see beyond the obvious and did not judge people without talking to them

Vike is a strong alpha male with berserker tendencies. he has his brothers backs but is very emotional - he reacts first and thinks afterwards, which can be a problem sometimes....

the secondary characters were wonderful and really engaging. I loved that we got the chance to see some of their POVs. normally I don't like too many POVs but Mrs. Kelley did an amazing job here!.

all the males are great and each is unique in his own way (I even or maybe especially loved Zale, and I am looking forward to his story) ... and I am so excited about exploring their histories. there are so many details we learn about them and you just know they will be even more intriguing if we get to know them better (I would have loved to meet Gen ...)

The same goes for Sela - she is very up-front and does everything she has to do to get the job done and protect her men. she is a bit of a bitch but her character was just as complex as her eyes colorful ;)

all in all: this is a book for every fan of paranormal romance.
it is just as a PR should be and has everything: a good story which is not only about the couple (although these stories can also be nice :) ), amazing characters (this book lives from its characters and Mrs. Kelley did a wonderful job in giving them depth), a wonderful love story with equally hot and sizzling scenes and romantic and sweet moments and a lot of action

so please, if you did not think about reading this before now, grab a copy as soon as it is out!

This is the first book that I have read by this author and she didn’t disappoint me. I will definitely be waiting patiently for the next book in this series.

I loved everything about this book. The storyline with all of the history and background into the warriors is really amazing. The author obviously has a lot planned for this series/characters and she provided us readers with an interesting story in The Bastard. Now, we just have to wait for book two to get some more answers, because now all questions are answered in this book, so I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Lacy only has her sister to look after and she tries to provide for her the best that she can; they are the only family that each other have. Lacy is kick ass and she gives everything that she has for the people she loves. Then she gets involved with Erik and now she has him and his bunch of warrior brothers to provide for and to take care of. I love how she cooked for them and they all thought that was the best thing in the world.

Erik is a strong alpha male and he always has his brothers’ backs, but Erik is very emotional and sometimes he reacts first and thinks later, which can sometimes be a problem. Erik comes across Lacy being attacked and instantly jumps in to protect her and is instantly attracted to her. Erik has demons from his past and he can’t tell Lacy the truth about why people want her dead; he just has to protect her and keep her safe.

I loved the secondary characters in the story and really enjoyed banter/back and forth between them, because I caught myself laughing at them with some of the things that they said or did. You get a lot of different POV’s in this story, but the way that the author has it written it wasn’t confusing and that just made the story that much better.

I absolutely am a fan of Inez Kelley’s writing style! She took the battle between heaven and hell and brought her brand of sexy heat to it!!! LAWD! I went into this book truly blind about what I was getting myself into, and to say I was pleasantly shocked and held captive by it is truly an understatement. I ended each page ready to know what happened next, and hoping that there truly would be a way that they could win and still get an HEA!
Vike doesn’t know what it is about the pretty cook that makes his blood sing, but he knows he is drawn to her. He finds himself watching her early one morning when that question’s answer isn’t anywhere near what he thought it would be. He and his friend are just able to save her from two soul leeches, and he knows he has to keep her close if he will be able to save her from them again. Lucy has no idea she is a descendent of an ancient holy line, or that it makes her a target in this war between heaven and hell. Will Vike be able to both resist her and protect her?
The chemistry between Vike and Lucy just about scorches you e-reader. Each of the six Forsaken men have me wanting sooo much more from them. I can’t wait until we get to know them more. This is that ultimate good vs evil story, except the good guys were oh so bad before their First Death. This is looking like it will most definitely be a must read series!! The characters are so captivating, and the story is a fresh look at story that has been building since the beginning of time. Can’t wait to read more!!!!

So Zoe York did it to me again. Got me hooked another author!! not that i'm complaining or anything.

The Bastard is a different twist on those bad boys and seriously I liked it a lot. The boys who call H2Q home make this book. The back and forth banter between them all make it feel like such a family and seriously will more than likely have you laughing or at least giggling out loud.

Erik has demons from his past. Hes where he is today because of that. He sees Lacey and is instantly attracted to her. I mean come on what is more entertaining than watching a mighty warrior get brought to his knees by one single human female?

Lacey is a provider. She has to have someone to care for. For while it has been her younger sister. Now she gets involved with Erik and his group and has a bunch of warriors to take care of. I promise you'll enjoy this book if you like The Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

This was definitely a great start to the series. What impressed me was that I thought the author gave the right balance to introducing a new world with multiple characters and giving the MC's their own love story. Inez Kelley uses villians throughout time and puts a twist to their characters. I actually was surprised at who a couple of them turned out to be and how they told their own story. The love story between Erik and Lacy was sweet even though they had all hell raining down on them. I liked Lacy as a character and she was the strong, gracious caregiver not a scared submissive pushover. Erik, well I love big, badass Vikings, but his loyalty and will to change was what was most appealing. I can't wait for the next installment. I was a great 5 star read!

This book drew me in from the first chapter. Great world-building, I like stories with angels and demons, good versus evil. This series is regarding the awakening of the biggest baddest in history. You all have to read what that means. I like Vike and Lacy, we got a tough once-upon-a-time Viking berserker and Lacy as a feisty yet nurturing human with an interesting bloodline. But what I enjoyed most in this book was the banter between the Forsaken. Great start to a paranormal series.

Synopsis:

My Thoughts:

It looks like it took me a long time to read this book, but it really didn't. I started in June, but wasn't up for M/F then and put it aside. I re-started it on July 18th and finished it the very next day because this book is awesome like that.

I really enjoyed Lacy and Vike together. They weren't too mushy and they didn't have unnecessary fights. There was a misunderstanding near the end of the book, but that was due to outside forces and it wasn't over something stupid. Lacy saw something she shouldn't have, but it wasn't her fault that she saw it. I'd have believed my eyes if I'd seen that, too. She womaned up and went to Vike when things got cleared up, so that's what matters most to me. Lacy was really likable to me. Maybe a bit too perfect girl, but she was real enough. She didn't just automatically accept things when the whole truth came out. I didn't like that she ran, but that really wasn't an unexpected human reaction and it could have been so much worse. When she slept on it and thought about it, she realized that she'd already gotten to know these men, so what they did in their First Lives didn't tarnish what she knew of who they are now. Plus, I liked that she stood up to Zale. As much as the guy intrigues me and I even like him, he can be a douche. I understand his motives, but he goes about things the wrong way. Except for with Annie. He's good with Annie. I wonder how long before they get paired off.

And of course there was Vike. He was a badass, but such a softy for a good woman. He could be so tender with Lacy, but still knew he wasn't a good man. History called him evil, but he wasn't really. Just easily led by his heart and the Berserker rage he can fall into. Those aspects of him in the wrong hands can lead to a lot of bloodshed. In Lacy's hands, I think Vike can do a lot of good. There were some moments when Vike really needed to cool off or even try to keep Lacy out of his head and focus, but he's still damned handy to have in a fight. He's also loyal if you show him loyalty. Vike trusts his fellow Forsaken, save for Zale, but then Zale didn't exactly make himself trustworthy to Vike. I can't wait to see how Vike reacts when Zale falls hard for a woman. If that woman turns out to be someone other than Annie, I'll be shocked. That should make things even more interesting since Annie is Lacy's sister. I can't imagine Lacy or Vike being too pleased if those two hook up.

I really like all of the other Forsaken as well as Sela. Sela is a fierce and badass leader, but I hope she gets a love of her own as well. She's a Vangelus stuck on Earth leading the good fight and she has her men, but it's not the same. That Righteous of Michael's seems to really have a thing for Sela, so I'm really interested in seeing that play out. I really want to know who the hell that guy even is. Then of course we have Rex, Nomad, Dray and Myth. I already talked about Zale and these guys are just as interesting. When their identities were revealed, I was surprised. They really are some of history's baddest. Nomad was the only one that I wasn't surprised about. Dray and Rex I really should have guessed. Probably even Myth, too. Zale was a complete surprise. I really look forward to seeing the type of women that will make these guys fall hard the way that Vike did. We get the meet the woman for Rex next and I can't wait.

Samael, our villain, can go get bent. This guy is evil. He's also pretty sick. The dude and his Chiefs have some nasty sexual habits. I'm not looking forward to his revenge on the Forsaken and Sela. After they kept him from turning Lacy, his vengeance is going to be insane, I just know it. There really isn't anything likable about it. He is a villain through and through.

Michael, the Vangelus leading the Righteous is a total prick. I can't fault Sela for carrying a grudge against him for millennia. Not with the way that he acts. After that stunt he pulled when Sela went to him for help after what went down with Lacy, I hope at least some of his Righteous will realize that Michael isn't so great. Speaking of the Righteous, most of them seem like douches. Perhaps will meet more less douchey Righteous warriors than the one that I'm sure will be the love for Sela since the Forsaken are about to have a lot more contact with those dudes (and ladies!) than they usually do. Rex training them to take over fighting the Soul Leeches while the Forsaken make sure they keep all Scions safe should get really interesting. The Righteous don't know shit about modern fighting as they've been in Paradise guarding some gates that don't sound like they get run on by Samael's people very often. They were all warriors in life, so maybe it won't be too hard for Rex to whip them into shape, but who knows? Good luck, Rex. I wonder if one of the Forsaken will hook up with a female Righteous. That could get interesting.

Then of course, there's a traitor Vangelus running around helping Samael. I have no idea who it is, yet, but whoever he is, he's an idiot. He really thinks Samael just wants to go home and is fighting some kind of good fight. No fool! He's torturing souls! He wants to rule over all! When this fool gets found out, I hope Sela kills him.

The fight against Samael has a ways to go and I'm not sure how long this series will be, but I plan to ride it all the way out. I at least want to see all of the Forsaken and Sela find their loves. If any of the Righteous get their own POVs and I get to like them as well, I hope they get to find their loves, too.

History teaches us that some men are just plain evil. Stalin, Genghis Khan, Hitler, Vlad the Impaler... All have reputations for being terribly evil by torturing and killing many, many people but to some, these men were heroes.

To his countrymen, Vlad Dracul (No 'A'. It was later added by Bram Stoker) was a great leader who warned his enemies away by impaling their comrades and putting them on display. To this day, Romanians will tell you that he was not evil.

Most of the world knows Hitler was a sadistic psychopath who killed people simply for the color of their hair, in some cases. To the Nazi's, Hitler was a man of vision who could take the whole world to a new level.

That said, it seems it's all in the way you look at it, your perspective, which side you're on, or what version of the story you've heard.

In Inez Kelley's, The Bastard, the Creator of All, has declared war on evil that has lasted centuries. In present time, the remaining warriors serving on earth, are the "bravest and the best" but, according to History's point of view, are some of the meanest, cruelest men in all of history. These men are loyal to only one, besides each other, the angel that acts as their leader, the archangel, Josiel, or Sela, as she is known, the head of the Forsaken. The Forsaken is one half of the Creator's army. They fight the good fight, on Earth, protecting the souls of humans from eternal suffering. The other half of the Creator's army consists of the Righteous, angel warriors who protect the Heavens, led by the archangel, Michael, himself.

In the beginning of the book, the reader has no clue as to what's going on. All we know is that a woman is attacked by paranormal beings and is then saved by paranormal beings. There's talk of soul dust and tattoos that become weapons and, before you know it, you're sucked in and, as the information is given, you are more and more intrigued. Pretty soon, you wish you could read faster so you can find out all the good stuff but, you also wish the book would last forever because it's so dang good!

This story is so engrossing and full of information that, someone looking for a light read should save this one for a later date. Once you get sucked in, there's no getting out until the end. Your emotions will be all over the place as you read. You'll find yourself cheering for the heroine, Lacey, when she doesn't give up despite all odds being against her. You'll sigh dreamily over how sweet Erik is to her and how good they are together. You'll fall in love with the warriors, and will be delighted by their personalities and camaraderie but shocked by what you find out about them. You'll also be happy and mad, by turns, and, not giving anything away, wonder what the heck Ms. Kelley did that for. (You'll have to read it to find out!) It's like an on-going roller coaster of emotion, with occasional pauses for absorbing bits of history and celestial knowledge.

The best part, besides the very satisfying ending? The warriors are all totally drool-worthy and make great romantic hero material. With, The Bastard, being the first book in the series, I can only patiently wait (NOT!) and wonder excitedly, who the next book will be about.

This story starts the series off with a bang.

The Creator of All aka God has given Michael and Josiel (Sela) the task to awaken men and women they choose to defend heaven and earth from Samael’s (Satan) attacks. Michael was afforded the opportunity to pick first. So he chose to awaken 77 of the best of the best dead warriors to guard the heavenly plane and called them the Righteous. Well Sela knew better. Since she was given the task to guard and defend the earthly plane, she decided to awaken 77 of the worst men and women history has ever written about. She named them the Forsaken.

There was a lot of information to absorb while reading the Bastard. But it did not deter me from enjoying the story nor did I feel lost as I read on. What we know about the baddest of the bad may not be 100% true after all. While we may have read stories about heaven, hell, good and bad, The Bastard is a complete variance of those plotlines.

The Bastard is about the Viking Erik who is known in history to have killed his brothers to claim the throne. From the 77 men and women Sela had awakened only 6 survive including Vike. He has been kind of stalking or crushing on the heroine Lacy who works at a dinner. He rescues her when she was attacked by soul leeches. Lacy is number one on Samael’s list due to her bloodline.

Erik and Lacy have great chemistry. Their relationship was quite believable. You can also feel the camaraderie Lacy has with the rest of the forsaken.

I could not in all honesty guess the identities of the surviving forsaken. But when their identities were revealed, I had a hard time seeing them as the people I learned about in school. In essence, the author has given me a different perspective of the lives lead by these reviled men.

I can’t wait to read the story of the rest of the baddest of the bad. Although the series isn’t about Archangel Michael's warriors, I enjoy their appearances in the story. Especially when a legendary knight came to visit Sela and the Forsaken.

I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This novel really surprised me—in a good way! Inez Kelley has created a mixture of history, science fiction, and romance. I’m a history buff, so I loved the way the novel takes those historical elements and infuses them with a supernatural twist. The concept behind the novel is carefully plotted and unique, and I could not put it down.
The background info was extensive, though, and pretty complicated. I did get a little frustrated keeping up the rules of the Vangeli and the Vachangeli, the Forsaken versus the Righteous, the Scion and the Scionim. However, when I stopped trying to figure it all out and just enjoyed the story, I found likable characters who were both good and bad, realistic yet infamous. There was a strange combination of reverence and filth. It had some moments of deprived debauchery, which bothered me some, but I enjoyed the characters’ backstories. Discovering the “who and what” of the Forsaken was like finding a treat. I tried to guess the identities of these men and what history they carried, and I can’t wait to read the next one!

I was given this book as a recommendation from a friend. I have read one other book from this author but it was more light hearted, cute and sexy. As soon as I read the insert before the first chapter, I knew this was going to be a completely different kind of book!! There are angels, demons, and the most evil men that used to be on this Earth, but there is also love, tenderness and laughter. Firstly, I love how the author really did her research and history. There were characters that were real historical bad asses like Vlad the Impaler, Cain (without Abel), as well as angels such as Michael. In all of this, there is a sexy love story with Erik the Bloodaxe and Lacy. Their chemistry is undeniable and hot! This book is the first one in a series (that has not been released yet) but the book finishes up with their story so you are not left wondering what is going to happen. From what I sense, the rest of the books will continue with each guy's story so we will get a chance to get to know each one in depth. Can't wait for Dray's story - he is funny and sexy at the same time as well as Zale who I have come to hate but wonder what lurks under his tough exterior. Definitely recommend!!!

I love the sound of this paranormal romance!! ;)

I was sent an excerpt and I really liked it!! It's the first of a new series but each book is a standalone about a different couple but there's a whole band of big bad Alpha heroes from what I understand so the books will be interconnected. I'm told it's paranormal but no vampires, no shifters, no fae, no witches and no ghosts -- the hero is a Viking! A real man but with "dirty raw power" who will stop at nothing to save the girl he's falling for...

I kept changing my mind about this book as I read it. I impulsively requested it on Netgalley after reading some enthusiastic recommendations on twitter. I had previously read one of Inez Kelley’s West Virginia set contemporary romances. I have a real weakness for bad boys in fiction, preferring Spike to Angel or Riley, and Wolverine over Cyclops for example, so The Bastard and the Baddest Boys in History series seemed like it was made for me.

The Baddest Boys in History is a paranormal series that plays with religious and mythical iconography from most the world’s religions. In the prologue, Inez Kelley introduces us to Sela (known in Heaven as Josiel) and Michael, Archangels in Heaven, Vangelus, servants of the Creator. Ha-Satan led a rebellion in Heaven and has been banished to Earth with a third of the heavenly hosts. That rebellion brought many of the Vangelus to Earth and they are reeling from their experiences in the earthly realm. On Earth the Vangelus were over-whelmed with sexual desire that was absent in Heaven, and it led to also sorts of un-sanctioned sexing, including Human-Angel interactions. Those encounters which get a mention in Genesis, led to the birthing of monsters and giants by human women that the Vangelus then had to track down and corral. Sela and Michael had been sexually involved, but Sela ended their affair when she realized that while she had been exclusive he had not. Since those days the Vangelus have been recalled to Heaven, and now the awkward former lovers have each been entrusted with raising from the dead seventy-seven champions to face off against Ha-Satan’s forces. Sela and Michael’ s fractious relationship leads them to take opposing approaches in selecting their champions, the Awoken. Michael sought out the most well regarded heroes and the holiest of warriors to make up his Righteous, who guard Heaven and Sela looked for the most depraved, dirtiest of warriors to fight in the Earthly trenches. Sela is a fight fire with fire sort of woman and will use every tool in the arsenal to defeat Ha-Satan.

Fast-forward to the modern day where we meet Erik, one of Sela’s six remaining Forsaken warriors. Erik is a Viking king, whose violent first life was ended by his wife’s betrayal, leaving him battled hardened and bitter he has been fighting for Sela and Heaven for hundreds of years. He intervenes when Lacy, the owner of diner in West Virginia he has been frequenting is attacked by Soul-leeches, bottom feeders in Ha-Satan’s evil ranks. Erik is able to rescue Lacy but his good friend and fellow Forsaken Gen is killed and Lacy remembers more of the supernatural nature of the attack than is convenient. Erik, trying to protect his secrets while protecting her from harm tries to dismiss all her strange memories as confusion due to her concussion. Maintaining that charade becomes even harder when he realizes that she isn’t a simply human but a descendant of the Vangelus, making her a valuable pawn and prize in this supernatural war and she will continue to be the target of attacks. Erik is drawn to Lacy but fears his attachment to her is weakness he cannot afford. Lacy is attracted to Erik but fears acknowledging who he might truly be.

Sign up for this book if you have want real real bad boys. Inez Kelley isn’t lying, she populated her band of Forsaken with legendary mythical and historical bad guys. While she does play around a bit with the idea that they might have been misunderstood, products of their time or victims of bad PR, the Forsaken themselves are mostly unapologetic for their bad reputations, even if they have are softer underbellies than they let on.

I really enjoyed the camaraderie of the Forsaken, brothers in arms, who are rude, mean and uncouth with each other as you would expect when they have been fighting a secret war for centuries without the respect or affection of those they fight for. I loved how Lacy, at first i baffled, frightened and suspicious of them, come to accept and love them. Lacy is a natural care-giver and can't help but start taking care of them all.

What didn’t work for me as well was the POV chapters Kelley gave over to Ha-Satan’s crew. In those chapters we spent extended periods of time with the seriously disgustingly evil Ha-Satan and his minions. I seriously questioned why I was reading the book whenever I hit one of those chapters, not because they weren’t well written but because events and encounters in these chapters were often so stomach churning. These chapters do effectively make you want to root for Erik and the rest of the Awakened however bad they might have been during their lifetimes.

Although I considered DNFing the book at points due to the evilness of evil characters, I hung on because I admired the writing, and plotting. The book was funny, serious and scary when it needed to be, and while at times the main romance plot was set aside to forward both the main action and a secondary romance plot Inez Kelley never lost the thread of it. The Bastard left me satisfied, and intrigued as to how overarching conflict will be resolved. I think she gave me enough surprises and twists that on balance I would recommend this to any who like anti-heroes, strong internal and external conflicts and bad boys going mushy for good woman.

Do you believe that you only die once? Vike and his other brothers have died and been awoken by God’s Beauty to fight evil on earth.

She and Michael could each only Awaken seventy-seven human souls, men and women who would be more than human. They would become the Awoken, new soldiers in the Creator of All’s forces in the battle for peace.

Everything changes for Vike when he meets Lacy, a Scion, and human descendant of the original eight. He lost his best friend Gen, defending Lacy from the soul-leeches that had been sent to collect her soul. As a Forsaken it is his job to protect the precious souls of all Scions.

A buried hum thrummed his blood as her soul sang to his…All those Awoken could sense these precious souls, but he’d never felt a soul-song as strong as hers, as pure and light. Even among the rare, she was unique.

If he can keep her safe for forty days, Lacy will be immune to the Soul-Leech and Minion in the Western Hemisphere. Where can he keep her that is safe from the evil that is after her until she is protected? Lacy does not know about the things that are after her, she thinks Vike is a body guard working for a security service. Vike does not know that she is needed by Samael (Satan) to complete his army and return to conqueror heaven.

“Why is she special?” She realized her blunder before his jaw flinched. No one questioned Samael, ever. The automatic plea fell from her lips. “Forgive me, Master, I didn’t mean –“ “I want the Cooper bitch and I want her now. Use her weakling sister as bait.”

When Vike finds out what makes Lacy so special he is stunned. She must be protected and kept safe from Samael.

“They’re not just Scion. They’re Scionim, descended from one of the seven.” “The Seven.” Horror blended with shock. The highest rank of Vangelus, the Seven…”Scionim,” Sela murmured. “Of course. That’s why her soul melody seemed different when I touched her. And why Annie still lives. She’s diabetic, but that gene might not be passed to a child. Samael’s holding her as a reserve.”

Vike and Lacy develop a relationship as he protects her. Will he be able to keep her from the evil that is hunting her? Will he be able to deny the feelings he has for her. Can an Awoken and a human find a future together?

Finally!!  A new M/F paranormal romance series that I can get excited about!!  Its new and fresh, but still reminiscent of several of my favorite series that I used to love.

A month or so ago, I was scrolling through NetGalley and came across The Bastard.  I will admit that I only skimmed the blurb, as I often do, and requested a copy for review thinking that is was a historical paranormal romance.  Ha!  I quickly forgot all about my expectations because I was immediately hooked into the story, and it wasn’t until after I finished it that I thought “Hey, wasn’t that supposed to be a historical?  Hmm.”  So no, this was not a historical; its set in present day West Virginia!!

The World:  I have no idea how to explain it because…well, its a bit complicated.  The Forsaken, the real villains from history, have been Awakened to protect Earth from the Third, the REAL bad guys.  Vike is one of the few Forsaken still alive and has been watching one of the cooks at a small town diner, Lacy.  When Vike saves Lacy from an attack, he discovers that she is a descendant of something powerful, but will have to make the choice to either kill her or protect her to keep her out of the hands of the Third.  Its really not all that confusing…I’m just not capable of explaining it well.

The Romance:  Vike, AKA Erik, and Lacy had great chemistry together.  It wasn’t exactly insta-love, but there was an instant attraction that the two couldn’t fight for very long.  Their love for each other was believable even though they fought it.  I will say that I was a little annoyed by the “big misunderstanding”, but thankfully that didn’t take too long to get resolved.

The Forsaken: I think what I loved most about the book were the other Forsaken: Zale, Rex, Myth, Dray, and Nomad.  I loved their skewed code of honor…total bad boys who are trying to make the world right.  Loved the humor and the banter between them and I can’t wait to find out more about the darkness inside each of them.  I don’t know if they will all get their own story but I do hope I get to see each of them get their HEA, especially Zale.  I have a soft spot of the biggest asshole.

There was a lot going on in this story: many characters with endless possibilities.  Secrets that have yet to be revealed.  Questions I want answered.  I am sooooo excited to see what will be coming up next!!!
