Thank you to Ize Press and NetGalley for this e-arc!
Actually a 3.5. I feel like this has promise. The art is really nice and it’s interesting enough, especially if you know you already enjoy reincarnation/revenge type stories. The MC is obviously very overpowered at this point and I’m interested to see how that progresses. I think the biggest flaw is the lack of real worldbuilding. We’re kind of just thrown into Vikir being reincarnated with minimal details as to where we are or what happened to him in his previous life. We start to build on that more, but it makes the revenge aspect a lot less interesting when I have no real stake in it because I don’t know the characters or care about the injustice done.
Thank you to Yen Press | Ize Press and Netgalley for the review copy in exchange for an honest review. This does not change my opinion in anyway.
The story of The Hound of the Baskervilles is my favorite of Sherlock Holmes so whenever I see a mention of it, no matter how little, I have to give it a go.
I knew going into this that this was not going to be a retelling. It does however use a lot of the names from the original story and the bloodhounds. In this world there are a few families that rule. One of them are the Baskervilles. The children are raised as bloodhounds from baby on out. There are a lot of children and not all are seen as the main family. Victor is one of the children on the outside. He was betrayed by his father, his family. But he is able to return back to him being a baby with all of his memories. Don't ask me how that works.
I think that is part of why I didn't enjoy this as much as I would have liked. It expects you to just take everything at face value and doesn't explain a whole lot about the powers or the world. That is a shame because the idea is actually interesting. Victor however doesn't have much of a personality beyond wanting to take revenge in this first installment.
The art however looks pretty great. It is dynamic. It is what you would expect from a manga.
As of Volume 1 this was pretty much exactly what I expected it to be. Man does a lot of awful stuff at the behest of others, man gets scapegoated and killed for the awful stuff, man reincarnates with all of his memories hellbent on revenge but he is of course now a child so now he's a really creepy violent child. That by no means made this a bad read. I'm a sucker for OP characters set in a violent world. The MC, Vikar is interesting as he spends much of the book attempting to hide the fact that he's definitely stronger than all of his peers but probably the adults in charge of teaching him as well, however, he consistently puts himself in positions where he has to no choice but to demonstrate those powers.
What I think is going to be not necessarily a surprising twist, but a twist nevertheless is the head of his family, Hugo, is currently the target of his revenge, however, it seems that Hugo's personality doesn't match Vikar's memories from his previous life. He's freaking ruthless don't get me wrong but at the same time he's not as awful as Vikar made him seem. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. It could go a couple of ways and both I'd support.
There also seems to be a hint at a little bit of a romance between Vikar and the most powerful mage in his age group, which I think will be a fun little side story if that's the case.
Overall, I'll definitely be continuing this series. It's pretty much got everything I look for in this type of reincarnation revenge story without being too over the top. Vikar is angry not completely insane. The world is interesting and hey I like the nod to Sherlock!
As always thanks to NetGalley and Yen Press for the eArc!
A reincarnation graphic novel about a man who is using this second chance to get revenge on those who wrong him in his previous life. The art is great up I wish there was more world building. It would have been nice to have a better understanding of how the powers in this world work. If you like reincarnation revenge stories then this would be worth a look. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC copy.
