Wraithwood Botanist #1

Wraithwood Botanist: A LitRPG Apocalypse Adventure

Rate this book
An apocalyptic LitRPG adventure featuring an intelligent MC, a unique power system, alchemy, and more!

Survive a hellish forest. Master a rare class. Conquer the System.
When Mira’s home is destroyed by gods, she makes two requests to the System that sends her to another to be sent to an isolated forest where she can avoid the violent path to godhood, and to gain magic that helps her live and thrive in the forest.

She is granted both, though in the harshest way possible.

The System strands her in a dangerous forest where half the plants are poisonous, the rivers teem with souls, and even the smallest beasts lay waste to experienced adventurers.

To survive such perilous conditions, she uses her modern knowledge of botany and chemistry to create clever traps and weapons, all while learning powerful magic and combat skills alongside her fiercely loyal cat.

Nobody believes she stands a chance. But in a world where the system rewards those who overcome dangerous challenges, the forest is a gold mine.

And while most people would give up, Mira realizes something that surprises her...

She enjoys it.

Experience the start of this unique spin on Apocalyptic LitRPG Adventures. Botanists who choose to get teleported into dangerous jungles are very rare and if Mira can survive, she may just become indispensible to the System itself.

I wanted to like this. Thrown into a killer jungle to see if you could chemistry your way out seemed like it might have interesting action. Unfortunately, nearly every scene/conflict utilized the same mechanic—being blindsided by some previously unknown thing that shows up to nearly kill the protagonist and push her further away from any of her goals. I kept waiting for any progress on her intentions but can only take so many diversions and nearly dying before giving up. I need to see at least some indication that the main character can start exercising actual agency or I just get frustrated.

Disappointing and boring.
I actually went through the whole thing to the end and I am still waiting for something interesting to happen. The main character is a Karen; who expect to be on easy mode. She sounds smart and prepared but in reality, she goes though life making bad decisions while blaming others. She is also a whiner and a complainer, even after the system bends over backwards to help her. She choose an abusive personality for the system, then is frustrated when the system host is direct and truthful. She chooses the most useless class (botanist) and is surprised when she is in an environment that is hostel to her. The system explicitly warns her that the universe is hostel but she choose to be sent to a green hell. The other characters are either dumb, losers or just annoying. The only reasonable character is a cat; that choose not to talk. The "gods" are petty and egotistic...like typical Olympians. I could go on, but I don't even want to think about story. Just boring and you guys should skip this one.

Zero emotional Control.

Another main character who lacks any emotional intelligence and loves profanity. I cuss up a storm but there is a time and a place and authors seem to lack the ability to portray complex characters with any real depth. She unnecessarily is snide and angry all the time and why? The guide literally does nothing but help her and maintains a personality she directly chose. Yet, she is constantly antagonistic. My other gripe is her inability to accept the new world she lives in. She acts like life is supposed to be fair, and even thought she is constantly shown it isn’t, she acts shocked and angry every time it proves to be unfair. What happened to cold , calculating characters that can reason through a situation without a meltdown or explosion of unnecessary despair. Feeling is beautiful and amazing and I want to read about it but I also want to see a mature character that can express them in a healthy entertaining way. It’s like reading from the perspective of a spoiled annoying child. That concept for the book is dope and the writing is well done. It’s just over shadowed by having an adult child as the main character. I love the isolation aspect also.

only female cats can be calico

Stopped reading with the introduction of her calico tomcat. What is it with people who think they can write a realistic cat but not know that calico (cats with red and black and maybe white) are all female? The gene for the color are on the X chromosome. The only way a calico can be male is if they are XXY and it would not be a tomcat in that case.

did not finish

What is the point of levels without stats, or anything to go with them? I dropped it after I seen mira go from level 16-17 but when did she even get to level 16 in the first place and what is she achieving by doing so?

The story would have been better if the concept of levels was dropped completely.

Did not like

It’s very rare that I come across a book in which I either can’t stand or empathize somehow with the protagonist. She comes across as a snowflake who needs to grow a spine. Very questionable choices. I could not bring myself to finish the book. Well written, but just not for me.

My goodness that was a lot. The author seems to be preoccupied with creating multiple storylines rather than building key character attributes and establishing the world the story is set in. The MC mirror almost becomes a minor character because of everything else that is going on above and around her.

Absolutely loved this! It's high risk/reward, the AI interactions are hilarious at times, and there are some cozy moments. The bond between Mira and her cat Kline is 💗🤌 Kline is THE bestest boi!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Better than I thought, not as good as I hoped.

TL; DR: A litRPG progression fantasy that wears its purpose on its sleeve, Wraithwood Botanist does what it does well, but an uninspired story may drive some readers away from what is otherwise a decent world experience.

This wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t bad. It’s one of those cursed litRPGs that finds itself caught in the throes of “almost boring.” I liked it, but I’m not sure how motivated I’ll feel to continue the series. If I hadn’t already purchased the second book, I don’t think I would have gotten it.

Characters: Mira is…a lot. I can’t say that I don’t understand her fascinations and forgetfulness of the world around her, but there’s only so many times that it can be inadvertently told “she a baddie and ain’t nobody stopping her” before I roll my eyes and move on. Adrian is chill so far, I don’t dislike him yet, but I’m very tentative, as he feels like a character that I could quickly grow to hate. Kline is awesome, as he should be.

Setting: The Wraithwood is pretty cool, but it isn’t anything unusual. I drew parallels to the forest in Quest for Camelot while I was reading it and it actually felt more applicable as I read.

Story: It’s pretty ok. Mass distribution of people to other pieces of the multiverse in an apocalyptic event unrivaled in the history of the world has a certain train of thought to it that you see in a lot of these litRPGs and similar stories. Here though, it actually seems really well put together. There’s a purpose, there’s stakes, people can make decisions early on if they actually want to participate. It’s pretty inspired how original normalcy feels in this story.

Writing: That being said, most of Mira’s story was boring to me. “Event A is a threat, use mushroom/plant A to solve it. Event B is a threat, use mushroom/plant B to solve it” etc etc. I didn’t feel any growth from her in a character perspective. She was a Mary Sue who didn’t inspire me to want to read more, which is tough from a main character.

Like I said, I didn’t hate it and the world is pretty approachable, but it wasn’t that inspired. I’ll probably read the next book and be done after such time, which is satisfying enough.

3.4 🌟

This was brought up by another reviewer, so I thought I'd put a correction here: there is a 1 in 3,000 chance for a male calico to be born. This is due to a genetic condition called Klinefelter syndrome, where they possess an extra X chromosome (XXY). They're usually sterile, and have other serious problems leading to a shortened life.

When their world is integrated by the Oracle, the prime mandate is to kill their way to godhood, but Mara rejects this idea. Instead, she asks to be put in a forest far away from humans, and left alone to study botany.

So the Oracle decides to plop her into one of the most dangerous forests on the planet. Be careful what you wish for!

The cat in this book is a male calico named Kline. He's awesome! I loved that he shared in Mara's journey through the first week on a new planet. Because they manage to survive against all odds, they progress very quickly on their paths.

Both the location, and Mara's passion for plants, makes this book unique. I'm not a botanist, but the information sounds accurate. It also made the encounters in the forest exciting.

Mara isn't exactly nice. She's temperamental, stubborn, often cynical, and once she makes up her mind to do something, she follows through, damn the consequences. On the other hand, she adores Kline, and would do anything for him. She loves her family, and does everything she can to help them too.

There are also a few chapters told from the POV of Aiden, a zoo keeper who is also undergoing the same trial, but in a different place, so you get to see other parts of the world.

This is one of the few LitRPG that features a female MC. She is smart and no pushover but she doesn't want to end up on a path murdering people so she instead ends up in a dangerous forest where many of the plants are poisonous and only her cat for company. She just happens to be a botanist who specializes in poisonous plants so it fits her. Because it turns out she will have to fight to survive. There may be no humans to kill but that doesn't mean things aren't out to kill her and she will have to use all her knowledge to survive and thrive.

There is plenty of action in this book but also lots about different types of plants and alchemy. Mira has to kill things but it doesn't feel like she is an overly aggressive personality which is a nice change from most LitRPG characters. I also like the small subplot of a family not always understanding you but that doesn't mean there isn't love and support. The feelings of love in this family is manifest and even put into words.

I don't want to say this is a softy feely LitRPG because it isn't. Mira is no push over and doesn't mind killing things, though I wouldn't say anything is really sentient. At least not yet. It doesn't feel like you are drowning in violence and that is the whole point of everything. Mira has other objectives.

Deus ex botanist

The snippets of real world science are appreciated, and some of the character interactions are genuinely emotional.
However. This book has minor continuity errors and randomly changes tense and breaks the fourth wall which as a reader makes it so i can't tell if this is a memoir or "currently happening." It's also off-putting for me how much external assistance is provided. On demands info, maps updating in real time to show safe routes having a fully stocked alchemy lab in "death woods" just cheapens the characters' accomplishments.
Instead of speed running this in a week, make the timeline 6 months or something and say she did her own research "off screen" for finding trails and mushroom locations.
I still don't know why "the gods" have apartments or drink cheap wine or sit at kitchen counters..... and why does the system only want to make murder hobo gods (this is explicitly stated early on that it's the only path of value to the system)?? Is it to fight in some cosmic war or just petty squabbles amongst themselves??
This has the bones of a great story but it left me with frustrating questions every other chapter.

All these books start about the same way. Character gets put in a place they shouldn't be, gets lucky, gets really good stuff because they get lucky. That bit for me finished about 25-30% of the way through the book. Technically the entire book is that. I was bored reading up until that point then the book picked up for me.

The main character is intelligent and actually thinks up plans that make sense. These plans are then executed but something usually goes slightly wrong as all plans do. This gives the book some grounding even if you don't know what these posions or fungal parasites are.

The main female character is really the only person who matters in this book. There are perspective switches to other characters and one who I have to assume is the main male character, but all these characters don't really do much of anything. The male lead I would argue does less than the others. I don't really understand why he was given any time since he does next to nothing and we only see snippets of what he is doing.

Overall not a bad book but definitely has some strange writing choices.

It was a great book in general. The story was great and I think that it is heading in good directions. I absolutely adore the premise! The thought of a botanist being sucked into a multiverse of bullshit, chefs kiss! As well as being able to add in a good amount of plant knowledge while making it feel interesting and exciting. The characters are wonderfully made and feel truly their own. Though I do have some things that I didn’t like but that was mostly semantics and personal taste. I didn’t really like how the gods were depicted it made the all look like a bunch of fools and kind of incompetent. Again this is my personal taste and I will not fault the author for their character related discussions, but it was something that irked me somewhat. The other thing I didn’t care for was how there was this implied foreknowledge of future interpersonal relationships and events. This is a perfectly valid narrative device and I may be an ass for listing it as a flaw, but I still will. Again I would recommend this read. Enjoy!!!

There is so much potential here.

The world building in this book is crazy. I can see this series being a favorite. There were a few things that threw me off, mostly to do with the writing style. For example; several different characters from different areas of the world (including some of the Gods) had dialogue that included things like “ can’t blame ‘em” and other shortening of words that really threw me out of the story. It’s one thing for a common person to speak in a slang but the Gods also? I don’t know why but it just bothered me. Also, there was so much going on with the “system” without a ton of explanation that I found myself confused when Mira spoke of her rewards and requests. By the end of the book I kind of had it figured out I think though. BUT those two points aside, I really loved the book and look forward to the next one. I am definitely going to be watching for more from this author also, what an incredible imagination!

This is a fantasy LitRPG series where a system integration comes to Earth and everyone seems to get transported elsewhere.  Mira gets a Botanist class and she and her cat are transported to a very dangerous forest on an alien world.  I liked that this series was trying to do something different by the protagonist being a botanist but I did not like how much she is carried by her cat or by gifts from others.  The system itself is also overly helpful and I did not like that Mira gave it a snarky personality.  Mira's survival and progression felt too rushed and forced to me.  There are also quite a few viewpoint chapters from a secondary character and I did not like that character or his class very much.

I finished book 2 and could have read more on Royal Road but decided I did not want to continue reading.  There are a few too many negatives to this series for me.  Maybe I will try it again when the series is complete.

EXCELLENT

I read a ridiculous amount of lit rpg, most of the time it's brainless escapism that I willingly participate in. This book was a unique exception to the often overdone and repackaged ideas of a simple genre. It started like so many other books that I've read where a system descends and suddenly there's magic, woohoo (wouldn't that be fun), before quickly evolving into a heartwarming romp through a fantasy Garden. Who doesn't love a crazy cat lady stem major (women in STEM huzzah!). It was captivating, funny, heartwarming, and sincere storytelling. I couldn't put it down. If you are a person who loves the litter Pig genre, are just a crazy cat lady who loves plants, or perhaps dream of poisoning your shitty husband with magical soul-eating mushrooms (listen, I don't know your life) book is for you.

I love, Love, LOVE this book! I Love Mira, she's a no-holds-barred kinda protagonist. A cat lady and a Botanist by trade. And when the Apocalypse happened Mira and Kline her calico tomcat take it in stride. Taking one of the most dangerous paths a new adventurer could, and with the gods involvement giving them quests that seem impossible which will prolly kill 'em both! But if they succeed they'll both become powerhouses!!! And wow I'ma still waitin' for Aiden to meet our intrepid duo!
So yeah grab the book and enjoy!

Here's some quotes for y'all!

"I threw on some jeans, hiking boots, and my lucky Charles Darwin T-shirt."

"Maybe you’re secretly dangerous on the inside, like a boring can of chili that’s secretly harboring botulism."

"I was making an aphrodisiac that I was certain would turn an impotent male into a Viagra-snorting sex god."

“This’s the good stuff. It’s gonna make you into a Konan amongst cats.”

I enjoyed this book enormously, and it helped me escape the stress and problems of the world. The botany and alchemy paths were fascinating and educational. I also enjoyed Mira and her cat, Kline. I was annoyed when we spent extended time with the obnoxious gods, but otherwise enjoyed the entire tale. I loved hearing about the books and skills. I normally consider cursing in books to be a lazy path to take, but it didn't bother me too much in this story, perhaps because her reactions were normal for anyone in private in such dreadful circumstances. I was touched by how much she cared about her family. I loved the details about baths, food and sleeping accommodations. The separate story embedded concerned with the beast tamer grew on me.

Cons:
- Initially, we are told that the System contains about 300 billion planets, but then everything takes place in a tiny part of just one planet, with no mention of anything related to the outside world.
- The gods feel like humans. Not particularly intelligent either. I have the feeling that they can't do anything meaningful. And live mostly like humans on house arrest.
- The MC and her cat got too powerful way too fast.
- After reading the book I have no idea about the power balance in the system. Like what makes someone more powerful. We have these tiers, but our MC's cat kills mobs 2 tiers above so easily. We are given no explanation why.
I doubt that I will finish the second book, but since I have it for free, I will give it a try.

I loved the premise - a botanist navigating a System world through her knowledge of plants. It’s a fresh angle I haven’t seen elsewhere, and the author clearly knows and enjoys botanical detail.

But the writing itself felt bloated. Instead of “I ate an apple,” it would be something like:
"I decided to digest a reasonable amount of calories, that, you know, are necessary for survival and I was surviving after all. So I took a fruit of pomum arboris - that you might know as an apple tree - and started to consume it by biting my teeth into the green flesh."

If an AI could shorten the text by applying principles of direct writing, for example William Zinsser' principles, I’d be a fan.

Dropped it at 11%.

mesmerizing

There’s something almost… spiritual about this book. If you’ve ever wished you could escape the world, only to wake up in some foreign one filled with magic, poisonous plant and strange creatures that’ll kill you before you can even register the threat they pose… then this is definitely for you.

If you’ve an animal companion in your life that you’re worried would get left behind… not a problem! The good news is that they come with you to this new existence! They might even become more intelligent, as well as your most ardent and steadfast protector.

If all this sounds good to you then what are you waiting for? Flip the cover open and start reading! You won’t regret it.

10/10 Unique Twist on Loved Tropes

This book is SO GOOD. The author uses most of the LitRPG tropes we all know and love, while breathing fresh air into them in a way that makes me feel like I’m rediscovering the whole genre. The main character, Mira, is lovable, witty, and capable of taking care of business. Also, the author is very clearly well-read/notably intelligent. There is a lot of very well-written humor that is hilarious, without being “slap-stick” or making fart jokes like a lot of the genre is known for. Mira is a mature, intelligent grad student, and she 100% reads like that. I can’t wait for the next book to come out. Thanks for the gem!

The MC is ultra annoying and an entitled whiner. Her sarcastic snark is hard to take, and the AI now has the same snark, because it is based on her personality. And she keeps complaining about the AI personality, that she asked for.

The MC levels out of nowhere. She gains exp for doing nothing. Suddenly it will just say, "she's now lvl 17".... all the did was run around.

The fight scenes are not good. She is trying to fight plant tentacles with sticky spheres for 60 pages.

She is randomly given very p0werful quests by gods with gigantic rewards. No reason why she would be chosen.

The writing is better that usual for this type of book, but it doesn't save it.

To Live One's Life as One Wishes.

When we reduce all the problems we encounter in like to their most basic components, life is simple. Get a some source of water, get some sources of food, find (or build) shelter from life threatening – and uncomfortable – environmental conditions, and finally find an activity we enjoy to spend any time not dedicating to remaining alive upon. Mira Hill knows what she enjoys doing — now she just has to make the universe, and a pantheon of self centered gods, let her do it.

This is an enjoyable, and strangely educational, read. The plot, pacing, characters, and world building are all quite good.

a pretty good read

The story itself is fairly nice, setting up a world with a clear rules and motives for existence.
It is a very good baseline to build the rest of the story off of.
The story itself is Intresting enough and keeps the plot moving in a nice direction.
Main issues are that so far the character interaction that does happen is not written particularly well and does more for plot conveyance than building the characters.

Also the writing style changes every so often and the teasing of how the book will go in the future are not subtle and kinda breaks me out of the flow state.

While I think there are better books I think this is worth a read.

I read a lot of litRPG and this was recommended to me through Audible, but I was hesitant to start because I find a lot of of female MC’s to be written as super whiny or make repetitive brain dead circles. This was refreshing to have an intelligent female protagonist, she came from a loving family, and a cat sidekick to boot. I saw that somebody else left a review, stating that a calico cat cannot be male, and while very rare — it can happen — Klinefelter syndrome. The cat is named “Kline” — coincidence, probably not! Maybe that’s another reason why this kitty is so powerful! A great storyline with some emotional moments that readers might be able to relate to.

Fantastic and fun! Kline for the win!!

An interesting book filled with action and drama and cuddly, furry, murder hobo named Kline!! Mira is a fascinating character; not a true hero, not an anti hero, just a girl who wants to be left alone with her cat and garden.

A LIT novel set on God-Mode.

The only reason I didn't give this book a 5 star rating was for the grammar problems. Quite a few sentences pulled me out of the story as I tried to understand what the sentence was SUPPOSED to read.

Have Fun!!
