About the Author
M. Mukundan’s stories and novels have been widely translated into various languages. He has been awarded the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary honour given by the Government of Kerala; the Crossword Book Award twice, first in 1999 for On the Banks of the Mayyazhi and again in 2006 for Kesavan’s Lamentations and the Sahitya Akademi award and N.V. Puraskaram for Daivathinte Vikrithikal (God’s Mischief) . A Soliloquy, the English translation of Delhi Gathakal (2011), won the JCB Literature Prize in 2021.

About the Translator
Nandakumar K. started his career as a sub-editor at Financial Express. A Soliloquy by M.Mukundan, which he co-translated with E.V. Fathima, was his first published translation from Malayalam. He lives and works in Dubai.

About the author

M. Mukundan(Malayalam: എം. മുകുന്ദൻ) is one of the pioneers of modernity in Malayalam literature. He was born on 10 September 1942 at Mayyazhi in Mahe, a one-time French territory in Kerala. He served as the president of Kerala Sahitya Akademi from October 2006 until March 2010.
Mukundan is known in Kerala as 'Mayyazhiyude Kathakaaran' (The story-teller of Mayyazhi). His native village of Mayyazhi figures in his early works: 'Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil', 'Daivathinte Vikrithikal', 'Appam Chudunna Kunkiyamma' and 'Lesli Achante Kadangal'.
His first literary work was a short story published in 1961. Mukundan has so far published 12 novels and ten collections of short stories. Mukundan's latest four novels 'Adithyanum Radhayum Mattu Chilarum', 'Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude Kadanakatha','Kesavante Vilapangal' and 'Nritham ' carries a change in structure and approach.
'Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude Kadanakatha' reveals how Vasundhara, an actress has been insulted in the course of acting due to some unexpected situations. It proclaims the postmodern message that martyrs are created not only through ideologies, but through art also.
'Kesavante Vilapangal' one of his most recent works tells the story of a writer Kesavan who writes a novel on a child named Appukkuttan who grows under the influence of E. M. S. Namboodiripad. 'Daivathinte Vikrithikal' bagged the Kendra Sahithya Academy award and NV Prize. 'Ee Lokam Athiloru Manushyan' bagged the Kerala Sahitya Academy award. Daivathinte Vikrithikal has been translated into English and published By Penguin Books India.
In 2008, Mukundan's magnum opus Mayyazhi Puzhayude Theerangalil fetched him the award for the best novel published in the last 25 years. Three of his novels were made into feature films in Malayalam . Mukundan wrote the script and one of them bagged a state film award.
Mukundan's latest novel is "Pravasam" (sojourn in non-native land) and tells the story of a Malayali whose journeys carry him around the world.
The French government conferred on him the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 1998 for his contribution to literature.

വായന ഞാൻ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത് എം മുകുന്ദന്റെ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ വായിച്ച് കൊണ്ടാണ്.. എന്റെ എപ്പോഴത്തെയും, എക്കാലത്തെയും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട എഴുത്തുകാരൻ.... 


'നിങ്ങൾ' എന്ന നോവൽ ഒരു സാധാരക്കാരന്റെ ജീവിതമാണ് പറയുന്നത്.. പക്ഷേ ആ സാധാരണക്കാരൻ ജീവിക്കുന്നത് അസാധാരണമായ ഒരു ജീവിതവും.. ഒരു സസ്പെൻസ് ത്രില്ലർ പോലെയാണ് നോവൽ മുന്നോട്ടു പോകുന്നത്.. 

'കുട നന്നാക്കുന്ന ചോയി' യിൽ ലക്കോട്ടിനുള്ളിലെ രഹസ്യം കഥാന്ത്യം വരെ സൂക്ഷിക്കില്ലേ, ഏതാണ്ട് അതു പോലെ

ഇതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് പലരും (മുകുന്ദന്റെ മറ്റു നോവലുകളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് ) നല്ല അഭിപ്രായമല്ല എന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞതെങ്കിലും
മുകുന്ദന്റെ നോവലുകൾ ഒട്ടും മോശം വരില്ലെന്ന വിശ്വാസത്തിലാണ് ഞാനിത് വാങ്ങിയതും വായിച്ചതും.

You by M Mukundan, tr by Nandakumar K can be approximated as an ordinary man’s life journey, something akin to Upamanyu Chatterjee’s Lorenzo Searches for the Meaning you may think. But CV Unnikrishnan, son of a stamp paper vendor and a homemaker, the fourth born of 5 children, the only graduate in the family for whom reading is everything, the author of just one novel that earned brickbats and bouquets, a man wedded to his writing only to divorce it later bitterly, makes you think otherwise.

The book opens with 70 yr old Unnikrishnan announcing in a press conference arranged by him, attended by only two reporters, that he would die on Dec 16, 2019. Upset at being dismissed as as a lunatic, when Paru, a newbie journalist, knocks at his door to elicit information on how he can predict his death accurately, Unnikrishnan, who in his youth had an uncanny obsession of uncovering mysteries, is both amused and irritated at her curiosity about his past - a past he tries hard to shed but clings firmly to his skin.

True to the pronoun ‘you’ in the title, the 2nd person narrative used here is unique - it lends a certain emotional detachment yet facilitates ‘you’, the reader, to put yourself in Unnikrishnan’s shoes; the strongest plus of the book. Though Unnikrishnan’s life journey occupies centrestage, every character is well-written, for Unnikrishnan & the author believe “There is no need for any story to have a protagonist, male or female, you thought. Every character is an adjunct”. This is evident as the principal question raised in the novel- ‘Shouldn’t one have the right to choose when and how to die?’ is not Unnikrishnan’s line of thought, but that of his close friend, Dr. Balan. Like in Delhi: A Soliloquy, personal history is intertwined with politics here too with Moplah rebellion & Thalassery riots finding mention. A writer’s fantasies, apprehensions and ordeals, writer’s block are portrayed so well. Wry humour imbued with local flavour, well preserved in translation, makes Unnikrishnan’s life readable & interesting. You - a book that could have been a perfect ten is let down by its implausible climax.

സ്കൂളിൽ നിന്ന് പൃഷ്ഠം നിറയെ കിട്ടിയ ചൂരൽപ്പാടുകളുമായി അയാൾ വളർന്നു. ബുർക്ക ധരിച്ച ഉമ്മിച്ചിയുടെ മുഖാവരണം ഉയർത്തിനോക്കിയതിന് നാട്ടുകാർ തച്ച് ചമ്മന്തിയാക്കി ആശുപത്രിയിലേക്ക് പറഞ്ഞയച്ചു. നന്നായി പഠിച്ച് ബി എ പാസ്സായി. സിനിമാക്കോട്ടയിൽ മാനേജരായി ജോലിനോക്കി. സ്ത്രീധനമായി കിട്ടാനിരുന്ന കല്യാണി ടാക്കിസും അതിനോടൊപ്പം രോഹിണിയെയും തിരസ്കരിച്ച് മാനേജർ പദവിയും ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചുപോന്നു. നോവലെഴുതി (ദിഗംബരൻ )വായനക്കാരെക്കൊണ്ട് വായിപ്പിച്ചു. ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ തന്നെ പുഷ്പകചക്രം ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി. ദിഗംബരന്റെ രണ്ടാംഭാഗം എഴുതുവാൻ ശ്വാനന്മാരും കാലങ്കോഴികളും തടസം നിന്നപ്പോൾ ജീവിതത്തിൽ നിന്നും അവധിയെടുത്ത് പോയി..... തിരിച്ചുവരുമ്പോൾ അച്ഛനും അമ്മയും വീടുമില്ല. അപ്പോളാണ് അയാൾ പത്രസമ്മേളനം നടത്തി പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുന്നത് അടുത്ത മാസം പതിനാറാം തീയതി അയാൾ മരിക്കുമെന്ന്, ആത്മഹത്യയാകില്ല പിന്നെ എന്താകും?
പിന്നീടുള്ളത് ഞാൻ പറയുന്നില്ല...വായിച്ചു തന്നെ അറിയണം

▶️ എം മുകുന്ദന്റെ വേറിട്ട ഒരു ആഖ്യാന ശൈലി ഈ നോവലിൽ കാണാൻ കഴിയും... നർമത്തിൽ പൊതിഞ്ഞ വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒരു നോവൽ. ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണനെ നോവലിൽ ഉടനീളം 'നിങ്ങൾ 'എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കുന്നത്. വായനക്കാരൻ കഥാപാത്രത്തോട് അയാളുടെ കഥ പറയും പോലെ. ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണന്റെയും സുഹൃത്ത് ബാലൻ ഡോക്ടറിന്റെയും സൗഹൃദം നമുക്ക് അസൂയ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നതാണ്.

താൻ മരിക്കുന്ന ദിവസം പത്ര സമ്മേളനം വിളിച്ച് കൂട്ടി നാട്ടുകാരെ അറിയിക്കുന്ന ഉണ്ണീഷ്ണൻ. ആ മരണം പക്ഷേ ഒരു ആത്മഹത്യ അല്ല.. പിന്നെ എങ്ങനെയാണ് ഉണ്ണീഷ്‌ണൻ മരിക്കുക എന്ന ആകാംക്ഷയിൽ ആണ് നോവൽ മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുന്നത്. ഇതിനിടയിൽ നിങ്ങൾ പലരെയും പരിചയപെടും. ചിലരെ ഒക്കെ കൂടെ കൂട്ടും. പക്ഷേ ഒടുക്കം പോത്തിൻ്റെ മോളിൽ വരുന്ന കാലൻ നിങ്ങളെ കൊണ്ട് പോകും. പതിഞ്ഞ താളത്തിൽ തുടങ്ങി ഉണ്ണീഷ്ണനെ മരണം എങ്ങനെയാണ് കൊണ്ട് പോകുക എന്ന ചിന്ത വായനക്കാരൻ്റെ മനസ്സിൽ ഉണർത്തി അയാളോടൊപ്പം നമ്മളെ അല്ല നിങ്ങളെ കൊണ്ട് പോകുന്ന എഴുത്ത്.

I liked it. while navigating through the life of Unnikrishan you will understand how fragile a human life is. A person who wanted to be ordinary end up to be some one who is so different from others through his life. One thing that left me hanging till the end is where was he during those thirty years when he was absent from his life. I enjoyed reading it.
