Yoshihiro Togashi (冨樫義博) is a manga artist. Credited in Chinese translations as Fu Jian Yi Bo.
He began drawing manga at an early age; while he attended college, the publisher Shueisha recognized his talent. Togashi has authored numerous manga series in different genres during the past three decades. He is perhaps best known for writing and illustrating the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter series, both of which have been published in the popular Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.
Almost all of the positives I had from the previous volume apply to this as well. Especially how interesting the battle between the three gangs is. Part of what I like so much is how well rounded each group feels. Hisoka, the flute girl, Kurapika and others all fight for their given group for their own individual reasons. The Phantom Troupe and Kurapika's crew each has its share of likeable characters. And none of them are ideologically opposed; they just happen to have conflicting goals. Even Kurapika's quest for revenge is a matter of circumstances.
For Uvogin, killing the Kurta was just another job. He had no issue with them, he just had a job to do. For Kurapika, the mission to get the treasure is just a means to an end. He want to pursue the Phantom Troupe. Gon just wants the treasure to follow his father's trail, but he's struggling to even show up to the dance. Hisoka allies with the Phantom Troupe simply so he can get closer to a fight with its leader. These people are brought into conflict with one another because each person is trying to fulfill their own goal, which leads to conflict. There's no grand cosmic plan that brought them together. They're all just living their lives and acting in their nature and inevitably collide with one another. It's a complex web of intersecting allegiance, goals, and relationships that always runs the risk of teetering into needless complication, but never does.
In addition, the series continues to impress with the sheer creativity of its characters. The battle between Uvogin and the Shadow Beasts had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what strange new thing would happen. And each punctuated by a shocking level of violence and gross disfigurement that really hits home given the series's more cartoony art. These weird abilities aren't just interesting conceptually; they are a serious threat that can inflict cringe-inducing damage that can border on body horror.
This is followed by an exciting car chase that sees further application of incredibly creative abilities. I know "heist" probably isn't the right word. But the sequence between the auction and Kurapika's battle with Uvogin constantly brought that word to mind. It's a thrilling rollercoaster where people are suddenly killed off and people can be swayed by their own personal motives.
And in the margins we have Gon and friends' antics, slowly leading them to a confrontation with the Phantom Troupe, which they are woefully unprepared for.
Fuck, this is one of the best volumes of manga I've ever read.
In this one, we finally got a proper battle between Spiders and those against the Spiders, though primarily against the Spider known as "Uva", who's basically your circus strong-man, turned up to 11 and with a serious taste for blood and violence. Kurapika also gets his first chance at revenge against those who destroyed his family, in a one-on-one, to-the-death battle against Uva.
Curious to see how this battle will turn out, and whether there'll be any interruptions to it.
I would have loved to see that arm wrestling with Leorio in an animated version. The anime really downsized his physical strength, even his whole existence.
Now, we get to see one of the best fights in HxH. Kurapika versus Uvogin. We've got a glimpse of badass Kurapika, with his rage surrounding him, his scarlet eyes and lethal conjured chains, which makes him so much more dangerous. He was soooo cool!!
He first seemed to be a manipulator as he always displayed his chains out and gave everyone a wrong impression of his true ability. With his one-on-one battle with Uvo, we get to learn the truth about his Nen ability. His chains were actually conjured, not an actual chains, which gives him a chance to hide it with the help of In. That technique completed the camouflage of his ability and provided him an upper hand of a suprise attack. Though he can't conjure an unbreakable chain, he can however conjure a chain close to that. With the condition of using his Chain Jail, the chain in his middle finger, only against the Spiders (Phantom Troupe), it would make his chain more powerful. But breaking that condition would have ended his life. The more strict the condition, the more powerful his chains would be. His Chain Jail not only captures his target Spider even in their full physical strength, it can also removed the Spider's aura through Zetsu, which will disabled the opponent's Nen ability.
But that's not the end of Kurapika's suprising ability. Aside from being a conjurer, he's also a specialist but only when his eyes turned into a scarlet color. And his specialization ability can maximized all the other nen groups into full power if he wants. That was a pretty powerful ability! Such a badass!! I can never get tired of seeing Kurapika fight!! I want more of it!!
I always get a little bored with in depth explanations of nen and all of their abilities. It's necessary and I understand that, but not what I'm trying to delve into most nights.
I also forgot just how useless the Shadow Beasts are. They serve as little more than a distraction for Kurapika and arguably make no significant impact on the storyline. Sure, they're scary Mafia guys. But when you get dropped by one of the Spiders alone, it makes you seem more like cannon fodder. That said, I loved that it was SO much gorier than the shows. I never realized how much more they would show!
Plus, now that we finally see Kurapika realize some serious potential though, I can't hate this book!

we finally get some high quality phantom troupe high-jinx. get some good kurapika fighting uvo and some of the working intricacies of the phantom troupe and kurapika’s nen abilities. you don’t really get much scenes of the 2 goofs together since it’s mostly a kurapika centric volume
As interesting as Kurapika's backstory is, I find him really hard to connect to as a character; the most interesting part of this volume for me was his conversation with Hisoka.
Kurapika! This volume belongs to him and his red eyes of vengeance. Summary:
- We see a little more of the Phantom Troupe's power, and they are starting to get a little scary. This volume mostly features Uvogin, who is your typical brute. The fight scenes are things of savage beauty.
- I totally forgot about the Shadow Beasts. How weird looking is that Porcupine dude? Their fight with Uvo is disgusting - poke, chomp, LEECHES!
- Kurapika unleashes the chains! Hisoka meets up with him later to discuss teaming up to take down the troupe. Hot-headed Kurapika of course leaves him hanging. That's his main weakness, and one that keeps him from becoming my favorite character.
- I'm looking back through the volume so that I don't miss anything and my goodness, the Phantom Troupe killed several semi-significant people.
- Meanwhile, Gon, Killua and Leorio are still trying to get some $$$ so they can buy Greed Island at the auction. They stumble upon a mafia-led hunt for the Phantom Troupe members at 200 million a pop. Welp, good luck with that. If only they could find their red-eyed friend.
- Kurapika and Uvo finally do battle - the first Spider caught in the web. If you're wondering how Kurapika became so powerful as a Conjurer, it's actually an acceptable and brilliant method. Our knowledge of Nen continues to expand, creating endless storytelling opportunities.
We don't like the cover. Moving ahead with a chapter-wise breakdown and detailed review:
74. September 1st: Part 3 The auction has gone horribly awry thanks to the Phantom Troupe. However, the troupe members leave empty handed because someone had emptied the vault before they arrived on the premises. We see the leader of the Troupe, Chrollo, and that is one impressive villain to be sure. The troupe discuss what needs to happen next, now that they have sufficiently angered the Ten Dons by messing up the Auction.
75. September 1st: Part 4 There is a face off between dozens of mafia men and one of the Troupe members named Uvogin who easily defeats and murders all of them on his own, needing no support from the rest of the Troupe members. Kurapika and the other Nostrade family bodyguards look on from a distance when they sense the first Shadow Beast (elite mafia bodyguard) enter.
76. September 1st: Part 5 The Shadow Beasts put up a good fight against Uvogin and yet, are unable to defeat the guy. Uvogin is poisoned and weakened after his fight though and asks Shizuku to suck the poison and leeches in his body out through her nen-conjured weapon, Blinky. We find out that Blinky can only suck dead things and the leeches put in Uvogin's body by one of the Shadow beasts are alive.
77. September 1st: Part 6 While the troupe is discussing on how to proceed, chains suddenly wrap around Uvogin and he is whisked away from his friends. We know Kurapika is the chain user but I was pleasantly surprised at Kurapika's strength and how strong a nen user he's become in this time. We learn about Chain Jail and how this is an ability Kurapika can only use against the Spiders -a condition he set upon himself to strengthen his ability. The Phantom Troupe is chasing Kurapika's car to free Uvogin when some more Shadow Beasts interrupt the chase and Kurapika and his fellow bodyguards escape with a captive Uvogin.
78. September 1st: Part 7 Kurapika and the others try to interrogate Uvogin but the guy is utterly uncooperative and in no way fearful of his circumstances. Kurapika eventually goes on to meet Hisoka after the latter contacted him about something, leaving Uvogin with the other Nostrade bodyguards. Hisoka reveals to Kurapika that he only joined the Phantom Troupe because he wanted a chance to fight the leader, Chrollo but that he hasn't been able to corner the guy alone once in all this time. Back in the hotel, Uvogin's troupe members come to rescue him, tailoring their appearances as mafia men. Uvogin, once free, vows to take revenge on the Chain user for daring to capture him.
79. September 2nd: Part 1 Kurapika ends his meeting with Hisoka once he receives a call from Melody, learning about Uvogin's escape and the death of the head Nostrade bodyguard. Light Nostrade puts Kurapika in charge temporarily. Kurapika moves Neon and the bodyguards to a new location, assuming that Uvogin would be looking for revenge.
80. September 2nd: Part 2 We're back with Gon, Killua and Leorio in this chapter and they're still trying to get enough money to buy a copy of Greed Island, the game soon to be up for auction. They are approached by some mafia men in their arm-wrestling booth corner who offer them bigger betting options in another arena and the three agree. There they hear an announcement of a huge bounty on capturing Troupe members, dead or alive. On the other end, we see Uvogin and Kurapika meeting again and the latter suggesting they move to another location to fight.
81. September 2nd: Part 3 Gon, Killua and Hisoka look for Phantom Troupe members for the bounty money. Kurapika and Uvogin get ready to fight after a heated debate on morality, murder and general mayhem.
82. September 2nd: Part 4 Kurapika and Uvogin's fight continues. K really blows my mind by how strong he is now.
83. September 2nd: Part 5 We learn that although Kurapika is naturally a Conjurer category nen-user, he still worked hard into specializing in conjuring as well as enhancing techniques, making him a Specialist nen-user. We learn about Kurapika's nen-contract and rules that have made him so strong so quickly. Kurapika's chains cannot be used on anyone who's not a spider or else his very life would be forfeit, that's a pretty big restriction, making the contract and nen strength super strong.
Gon and Killua are trying their level best to make billions of money to buy the Greed Island game. They try everything from gambling 🎰 to arm wrestling but they are unable to make that much money for the Auction where some copies of the game will be sold. Kurapika on the other hand has joined as a bodyguard to the Mafia Boss's daughter Neon. Neon has divination ability which leads them to the clue of the Auction hosted by them to be in jeopardy as some people will try to steal the auction items. But nothing helps as still the items are stolen. They try to get the items back but nobody is able to stand the Phantom Troupe. But Phantom Troupe also doesn't have the stolen items. Kurapika somehow with help of others catch one of the Phantom Troupe member Uba who has great physical strength. He can even handle a Bazooka. But he is not under their care for long as his team members save him and killing the Boss whom Kurapika reports to. Kurapika becomes the interim boss and relocate Neon to a safe place. He fights with Uba and wins revealing his power. Also Hisoka is one of the Spider 🕷 member and wants revenge against his boss and thinks with Kurapika he can have a chance. On the other hand Gon, Killua and Leorio try to reach out Kurapika to ensure they can help him whenever needed and maybe get some info on the Spiders on whom a prize money 💰 of 2 Billion is set to capture them alive or dead.

The Yorknew arc has been seriously build-up since the beginning of the Heaven's Arena arc, during the Hunter Exam when Hisoka whispers in Kurapika's ear the place they should meet.
The Phantom Troup is now being developed, and they are absolutely amazing villains. Yoshihiro Togashi does have a fantastic way of creating remarkable villains, such as Toguro from Yu Yu Hakusho.
This one goes into hunting the Phantom Troup after they stole the goods from Yorknew's action.
As a teenager, I watched the 1999 anime, and the fight between Kurapika and Uvo heavily impacted me. I loved Kurapika's nen abilities, and the whole fighting sequence made that anime mark me deeply, even though I did not dedicate myself to it at the time.
Now, as I read the manga and watched the well-adapted 2011 anime, this fight was even more interesting, and this looks like the manga at its best.
I should stop giving 5 starts to Hunter x Hunter but I just can't.
