Without Pride and Prejudice

Rate this book
Can their love conquer pride and prejudice?

Ever since I first read Pride and Prejudice at twelve years old, I’ve dreamed of being Elizabeth Bennet. That dream is now about to come true. I, Monroe Wilde, the woman some could argue isn’t exactly Elizabeth Bennet material, have been chosen to play the beloved heroine for one week at Pride and Prejudice Park, a destination experience for Jane Austen devotees. To make this dream even more amazing and surreal, my best friend, the Duke of Blackthorne, Alastair Fitzroy, has volunteered to play my Mr. Darcy.

If this wasn’t fantastic enough, it appears my broody and ridiculously attractive best friend, who I’ve done my best not to fall in love with, wants to be my real-life Mr. Darcy as well. But there are some gigantic obstacles standing in our way. For starters—I’m not exactly duchess material, and we run in very different circles. Dating me would most certainly make him a social pariah. But the biggest problem of all is that, well . . . I don’t know exactly how to explain it, but somehow after a horrible mishap at the park, I find myself more than just pretending to be Elizabeth Bennet—I land smack dab in the middle of the actual Pride and Prejudice story.

So since I’m here and unsure whether it’s a dream or if Pride and Prejudice really is heaven, I figure I’ll just help move things along and make sure everyone gets a happy ending, even Mr. Collins. But leave it to me to mess up the quintessential love story of all time. What happens if I can’t get Mr. Darcy to fall in love with Elizabeth? Will I ever get back to Alastair? Will I ever become the Elizabeth I so wish to be? And I have to can my world exist without Pride and Prejudice?

USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Peel presents an enchanting friends-to-lovers story with a Pride and Prejudice twist.

Calling all Pride & Prejudice fans, and those who haven't yet discovered its goodness!!! Monroe and Fitz are well versed in the amazingness of P&P and can help bring your education up to par. And you won't be disappointed! You'll be a fan before you even know it happened and you'll be wanting to join Monroe in living out her P&P daydreams by running away to Pride & Prejudice Park. A fabulous cast of characters round out this amazing book!!!

I loved how Jennifer Peel wrote this book! I couldn't stop grinning right from page one when we met the spunky Monroe and see her first interaction with the Duke. I honestly laughed out loud...so hard! I knew from that initial scene that I was going to fall head over heels for Monroe and Fitz. And I did! They captured my heart and I spent the rest of the book cheering them on.

I loved seeing their history through several scenes and coming to understand more about their love and friendship. It's complicated! But it made me cheer even harder for Fitz to get his act together and just tell Monroe! And y'all are going to be fist pumping the air and cheering for him from the moment you know he's all in! *Holy Swoon* All of the heart eyes and clapping and cheering for Monroe's boy Fitz!!!

He's really good at writing letters and talking. You might need to remind yourself multiple times that he is not the man for you, he belongs wholly and unequivocally to Monroe. I don't think there's anyone who sees them that doubts that. *Heart eyes* I'm soooo beyond excited for the audiobook and the narrator that the author was able to get for Fitz. I've heard a sample of him reading one of the letters and let's just say that y'all are going to be in Heaven!!!

There are some ups and downs but they make this journey and adventure worth every moment! It was so cleverly done! I'm not going to say anymore other than just read the book and enjoy this beautiful, witty, and delightfully charming story for yourself.

Thank you to Jennifer Peel for writing this story that I didn't know I needed. It's one of your best yet and is one of my favorite books ever!!! Monroe & Fitz will always have a place in my heart!

Content: Some kisses, some mild innuendos.

I received a copy from the author but have also purchased my own. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

It is a truth universally acknowledged that you will want to read this book!

Fans of Jane Austen will fall in love with this story- a new spin on her classic tale that will leave you with all the feels! All I can say is thank you, Ms Peel, for creating a story that helped me step back into Austen’s beloved world.

I adored the prologue of this book- it was the perfect way to start this story and set the scene. The friendship and hidden romance building between Fitz and Monroe made this tale come alive long before the first chapter. The quality of the characterization, plot, and setting were incredible.

The friends-to-lovers trope isn’t always my favorite, but the author did such a fantastic job of showing us how each protagonist felt that I couldn’t help but fall in love with Fitz and Monroe’s story. And oh my goodness- that first kiss between Fitz and Monroe was full of fireworks!!

I loved how the book took twists and turns (some I predicted, and others I didn’t). At times I felt like I truly was inside Pride and Prejudice, and I enjoyed how this timeless story came alive in new and heartfelt ways. I sure hope to revisit this world again- I want to see more of some of the other characters!

“I was no ordinary Elizabeth. I didn’t have any pride or prejudice against Mr. Darcy.”

Jennifer Peel exceeded my wildest dreams with this mashup of Pride and Prejudice and a modern day romance. Monroe and Fitz (a real life duke) are the best of friends and when she’s left alone to go to the Pride and Prejudice Park for a week for her “honeymoon,” Fitz steps in to be her Darcy.

It would be amazing if such a park really existed, as everyone came together to play their parts and act out this iconic book/movie, but Monroe and Fitz go off the rails a bit when big feelings are acknowledged and realized. No one writes the swoon and scandalous, but delicious, romance quite like Peel.

Fitz is the perfect Mr. Darcy, with his slightly arrogant and uptight ways that only serve to mask an inner softness, while Monroe embodies Lizzy quite well. She’s imperfect and always tries to help everyone, often with disastrous results, but her heart is in exactly the right place. A more perfect combination couldn’t exist.

I adored everything about this story, especially how it was broken into a couple of parts, and how it really showcased the full spectrum of two opposites and how they attracted.

Content: mild+ romance

All the hearts and stars for this one! It was absolutely charming, and I ardently admire and love it!

This was unique from the author’s other books in the best of ways, and I think it’s one of her very best books.

It felt like a lovely tribute to Pride and Prejudice, and reminded me of why that masterpiece is one of my very favorite books. All the references and quotes Ms. Peel used from it made my Austen loving heart so happy.

The characters were well fleshed out, and Monroe and Fitz were fabulous! The romance and chemistry between them was excellent. I adored Monroe from the start. She’s very endearing and lovable. The cast of secondary characters also added so much fun and entertainment to the story.

There is a twist that comes about halfway through the story, which I don’t want to share and ruin for anybody, but it was so delightful and a highlight of the story for me.

Without Pride and Prejudice is sweet, magical, romantic, and charming. I’ll be reading this book over and over again!

If you’re a fan of Pride and Prejudice, the book or the movies, you do not want to miss this gem!

Many thanks to the author for a copy! All opinions expressed are completely my own.

Move Over Pride and Prejudice, There’s a New Classic!

I absolutely adore Pride and Prejudice, but there are some things I would have changed, like Mary ending up with Mr. Collins. I was glad that Monroe agreed with me and rewrote the script!
When Monroe books an experience at Pride and Prejudice Park it is supposed to be for her honeymoon. The wedding is called off, but her best friend Allistair Fitzroy, Duke of Blackthorne agrees to go with her. He almost lost her to another man, now he wants to show her how ardently he admires her. Their story parallels Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s a little too well. I loved watching Monroe discover that she is enough. Fitz was perfect, once he got past his pride. This book made me laugh, smile, swoon, and want to watch Pride and Prejudice over and over again.

I love me some Jane Austen modernizations and I really thought this would be more like P&P. I went in blind and I guess I shouldn't have. Friends to lovers with years of pining usually isn't my jam, but I know it is a lot of others. So, if you like that, definitely give this a shot. The FMC was also a little on the annoying side for me so I had a hard time getting into the character like I like to do, but this is a me thing.

Have you ever just needed a day to yourself? A day where you ignore everything and everyone around you and do something you want to do? That's exactly how I felt when I woke up this morning. So what did I do? I grabbed this baby, ignored the world around me, and dove head first into all things Monroe and Fitz.

I don't know where to begin to tell you how much I adored Monroe and Fitz. From their first meeting, their "Ta-da!" moment, I was hooked and knew this book was going to be one I would treasure for years to come. One that I know I'll be reading over and over again.

I'm usually not a fan of friends to lovers, but Monroe and Fitz are something special. Their connection, their bond, their love for each other, had me feeling all the feels and rooting for them to get their HEA. Their story had every thing I have come to crave and love in the books I read. I couldn't decide if I wanted to devour their book as quickly as possible, or read it as slow as I could to savor every moment they shared together. Their journey is beautiful and full of heart. I loved every minute I spent with Monroe and Fitz. It was perfection in my opinion.

You guys know how much I adore the side characters and this book was full of them. From Monroe's P&P family, to their real families, I fell in love with them all. They were the perfect addition to an already amazing story. Now someone please tell me that I'm not the only one who needs Anna and Kingston's story. Intrigued is an understatement when it comes to these two. I'm crossing all the thangs that Ms. Peel gives us their HEA.

There's a reason why Ms. Peel is one of my favorite authors and this book is a perfect example. I can always count on her to make me laugh out loud, get teary-eyed, and let out little dreamy sighs while reading her books. I'm in awe of her talent and cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next!

As for my casting... I adore these two! What do you think?!

A MUST READ for all Pride and Prejudice fans! This book hit all the feels with a friends to lovers story. A twist in the middle you don’t see coming but makes the entire story. Left me feeling like I need to rewatch and re read every P&P version available. Easily one of Jennifer Peels best books. I predict a swoony award in its future. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The Brief: Monroe decides to take her honeymoon trip to the UK without the idiot ex-groom. Her best friend offers to go with her and play Mr. Darcy along side her Elizabeth Bennett. Are you excited yet?

The Debrief: Fitz is pretty much every book, retelling, movie version of Mr. Darcy wrapped into a piece of dark chocolate. So yummy! Monroe is a lovely hot mess. She is every inner thought you’ve had about the movies and books including the boiled potatoes comment- which is a fav. Monroe is just trying to be her best self and stumbling along the way so… just like all of us.

I don’t want to spoil the blind readers like me, but if you’re any kind of Austen fan you’re going to love every twisty connection. If you’re not into regency, this contemporary is also your jam! It’s swoony, snarky, totally charming, and heart melting. It felt a bit like living out those Darcy dreams, but with commentary. And indoor plumbing. And snacks.

The Rhyme: When love seems based on society’s prejudices can Monroe measure up to their mark? Will Fitz embrace his heart’s desire and love fully or stay with his pride in the dark?

So much fangirling with @jpeel_author for another fresh step into something new. Looking forward to reading more of these characters soon. Available now and in KU!

ARC Review⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5’s

Thank you to @jpeel_author for the #gifted book and goodies!

Jennifer Peel delivers a delightful and unique take on Pride and Prejudice with Without Pride and Prejudice, a clever and entertaining read set in the charming world of Pride and Prejudice Park—an all-inclusive Jane Austen destination experience. The premise alone is fresh and fun, making it a standout among Austen retellings.

Monroe and Alastair, the novel’s dynamic leads, are a joy to follow. Their opposites-attract romance, combined with a friends-to-lovers dynamic, is both humorous and heartfelt. Monroe’s quirky, free-spirited nature perfectly contrasts with Alastair’s aristocratic demeanor, creating plenty of witty banter and memorable moments. The dual points of view add depth to their relationship, allowing readers to fully experience their journey.

The side characters are just as entertaining, enhancing the immersive feel of the story. The humor is sharp, the romance is sweet and clean, and the overall storytelling is refreshingly creative. Whether you’re a longtime Austen fan or just looking for a lighthearted, engaging read, Without Pride and Prejudice is a charming and worthwhile escape.

DNF at 40%. There was too much giggling. SO MUCH giggling from our “Elizabeth.” (Elizabeth Bennet would never have giggled.) Need proof? Giggling was mentioned 39 TIMES in barely 300 pages. And at the most inane times. Like this:

“Yes.” He raised our clasped hands and kissed mine. It was so romantic. “How? When? Why? Where?” I giggled, needing to know everything.

As a die-hard P&P fan and a woman who named her plant Lizzy, this book was absolutely not for me.

Wasn’t the best variation I’ve read, but it did have its merits. I like the mini-coma/dream aspect. Definitely brought something new to this timeless classic. But it just didn’t have enough depth to make me feel like I was part of the story. Probably will forgot about this book in a week.

3.5⭐️… The real-life romance parts were 4+. Very sweet and pretty swoony, while still being held back and yearning.
The middle third had a change of scenery so to speak that wasn’t my favorite. Maybe more enjoyable if you have more knowledge of the original Pride & Prejudice? But I also just missed Monroe & Fitz being together. That was more Monroe’s self-discovery portion, but just wasn’t my favorite.

If you love Pride and Prejudice, you'll love Without Pride and Prejudice! The quotes, inferences, and genuine love of the original story are carried throughout this entire book by not only the main character Monroe and her love interest Fitz, but also by many of the other characters that spotlight in it. Jennifer Peel adds to Jane Austen's story with sarcastic wit, pure joy for life, and a style of writing about love that makes your insides kind of melt a little. She has an easy manner of writing that pulls you through the book. I could hardly put it down!

There were some mild swear words and some kissing scenes, but no sexual scenes.

So delightfully adorable!

As a devoted Pride and Prejudice fan, Monroe Wilde is ecstatic that she has been chosen to play Elizabeth Bennet in an Austenland-like experience. And even better, her best friend Alistair has agree to play opposite her as Mr. Darcy. Not that anything between them would or could ever happen. Alistair is a real life duke and is expected to marry someone of his station.

Alistair (Fitz) has been in love with his best friend Monroe for years and has been tortured watching her date other people as he adheres to his family's rigid expectations. But when she is finally free from her loser fiance and Alistair has the opportunity to help Monroe live out her dream, he decides to forget expectations, seize the day and be the real Darcy to her Elizabeth.

But just like in Jane Austen's beloved novel, the road to love is not always smooth...

What you'll love:
best friends to lovers
dual pov
quirky FMC
aristocratic MMC
Pride and Prejudice park
opposites attract
Monroe's dream
Fitz...nuff said
THAT FIRST KISS!!!!
memorable side characters
the letter
Perfectly perfect ending

AHHH!!! Be still my heart because there is another Darcy in town who has most definitely gained my good opinion!! Jane Austen fans and lovers of romance everywhere are in very great danger of falling in love with Alistair Fitzroy and this adorably swoony romance that had me reaching for my smelling salts.

Fitz and Monroe are soooo perfect together! Monroe's quirkiness contrasted so well with Fitz's stoic behavior. Once they allowed the sparks between them to catch, it quickly turned into a bonfire! So much tension and chemistry and oh my, the way Fitz adored her!! (insert all the melty emojis here) Loved the unique and fresh take on a classic and the crazy plot twist that made my Pride and Prejudice loving heart sooo happy.

So much charm and heart and warmth in this unforgettable romance. It was a combination of two of my favorite worlds and I loved every minute of it! Undoubtedly a new favorite that I will be re-reading for years to come. Go read this and fall in love with Darcy and Elizabeth all over again along with new favorite characters.

I love Pride and Prejudice as much as the next but this book was a big miss for me. You know when you read a blurb and you’re kind of hesitant about it? This was that book for me and I should have listened to my book senses.

First start off with learning there is no chemistry between these characters. Both are so flat and boring. They’ve both loved each other for years secretly but have yet to act because of circumstances. I hate in stories like this that the character with class standing (usually the guy) is faulted for hesitating to fall into a relationship that would not be societally accepted. There is a reason he hesitates and it a very real realty for him. Whether it’s an ok thing or not, he would be shunned in society. Give him time to accept that choosing his love will forever alter his life.

And Monroe. Girl. You are not self aware. I appreciate you want to help people but when your “help” ends up harming others, you need to take a look at yourself. I would be pissed beyond belief if you “helped” me at airport and caused me to miss my flights! And who gives their suitcase to another person??? Can we also talk about that she watched her mother die in front of her at the age of 5 and no one thought she needed therapy??? Hot mess character.

I have to admit, I skimmed this book. A lot. The whole “second volume” is skippable. It’s a poor retelling of Pride and Prejudice but with the characters of the book at hand. And really, I wanted to find closure with Fitz and Monroe. Not “Elizabeth” and “Mr. Darcy”. It’s this weird intermission of the actual story. It has no bearing on the plot of the book and is just words for you to skim.

If you are a lover of Pride and Prejudice and think this book will speak to that love, just say no. It won’t. I’m not sure this book is worth the read for the weak, underdeveloped friends to lovers trope.

In companion novels by @jpeel and @bmonson, P&P enthusiasts Monroe and Macey get to live their dreams of being Elizabeth Bennet at Pride and Prejudice Park, a kind of Disneyland for Pride and Prejudice fans. They each get their own Elizabeth experience and their own personal romance—even though romantic pursuits outside of the script are STRICTLY forbidden. The whole cast is there, directed by a very haughty Lady Catherine de Bourgh. While Wickham is appropriately swarmy, Mr Collins is surprisingly worth boiling potatoes for. With well-casted characters, etiquette, dancing, and horsemanship lessons, the role-playing begins.

In Desperately Seeking Mr. Darcy, Macey’s best friend’s brother, Zane, makes a last-minute decision to fill in for her previously planned P&P partner. Of course, Macey is horrified to be play-acting a romance with her unrequited crush. As the good friend he once was to Macey, Zane is determined to help her have the best time she can, even if he’s completely out of his element. I love how he gives his all to the experience, both Regency and real.

In Without Pride and Prejudice, Monroe’s best friend, who happens to be an actual duke, offers to be her Mr. Darcy. With the natural British aristocracy accent, Fitz is made for this role. He also has decided he’s done being just the best friend and this is his chance for a real happily ever after. Monroe is from Kansas, so it completely tracks that she would have an Over the Rainbow experience with Pride and Prejudice. It’s so much fun!

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a woman in want of a good book must read Without Pride And Prejudice"

Pride & Prejudice is an absolute favourite of mine, and I love books, merch, and events related to it. That said, they can sometimes be a bit hit and miss. Jennifer Peel has taken the P&P spin-off and added something extra to it - magic! This is a really refreshing take on an absolute classic. It stays true to the themes of P&P but delightfully spins it on its head in a Sliding Doors type scenario. Honestly, it’s wonderfully refreshing to read something where the author absolutely knows Austen and her material. It makes being immersed in this book all the more fun, and as a result it’s a hugely enjoyable read.

Is it up there with Jennifer Peel’s other books? Absolutely! The twist mid-book brings something fresh and new to the genre and really adds to the storyline.

As for the characters, Fitz and Monroe are fantastically written and have charm in abundance. Monroe’s quirkiness is endearing, and you can see why Fitz falls for her. The supporting cast is also captivating in that there are at least 4 books I’d love to see as a continuation of the series.
This is a heartwarming, enchanting tale of love overcoming circumstance, and you’ll enjoy it from start to finish.

5-star read and would wholeheartedly recommend it

Pride and Prejudice fans, this is the contemporary mash-up and retelling you didn't even know you were waiting for but most definitely do not want to miss. I loved this story!
Without Pride and Prejudice was delightfully swoony and super original in all the best ways. Jennifer Peel surprised me with so many fun things and unexpected turns throughout this story and let me tell you, I was hooked! As a fan of Pride and Prejudice and the movie Austenland, this took things I love and blended them together with twists completely all their own that had me turning page after page with utter delight as I read this book. I loved that it was unexpected. I loved the absolute chemistry between Fitz and Monroe. I loved the different parts of the book. I loved the message Monroe discovered about herself. I loved the modern aristocracy meets American girl-next-door. I LOVED the ending. This was friends to lovers like I haven't read it before and it was fantastic. I could keep raving about it, but instead, I'm going to recommend it and hope you read this cute story to see why I enjoyed it so much. Let me just say, move over Mr. Darcy, Alastair Fitzroy can officially speak "Duke" to me anytime.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This does have some mild swearing.

I have been a fan of Becky Monson's since her debut novel. So when Desperately Seeking Mr. Darcy came out, I was first in line to gobble it up. And then I knew I absolutely had to read Without Pride and Prejudice, the companion novel by Jennifer Peel. I needed more from these characters, and Monroe just came across as a quirky and loveable character!

I love her because she is perfectly imperfect. She tries too hard to help people and then ends up in some of the funniest predicaments. She sees herself as making a mess instead of helping others. She is outspoken and loves hard. Her love for P&P is like none other.

Fitz is also dreamy. Falling for his aristocratic self beats all of those stories of falling in love with a prince because he seems more realistic and attainable. Can my younger self please go to school in England and find one?

Fate has lined up a parallel universe that is intriguing and just completely works in spite of the changes that Monroe's own pride and prejudice want to inflict as Fitz struggles with his own in the real world. It's a clever nod to the original work that made me fall in love again with not only the characters in this duo, but also the original and all of its cinematic versions. It's rare that I find clever retellings of the classics, but this one is fantastic. I'm so glad Jennifer Peel and Becky Monson teamed up to do this!

LIGHT SPOILERS BUT THEY ARE THERE!!!!
SPOILER FREE - I loved this friends-to-lovers story with a heavy dose of Pride and Prejudice that worked so perfectly!! Closed door, clean, story of redemptions and learning to love yourself even when that self is someone a lot of people look down on because of their own insecurities and prejudices. I Highly recommend this story for clean, closed-door romance enthusiasts.

Lightly spoilered review below. Proceed with caution!!

I adored this book. Monroe is a wonderful, sweet, precious ball of love-filled chaos. Fitz is a man who was raised very specifically, struggling to bear with dignity, honor, and respect the weight of responsibility and an entire nation's expectations for a man of his ranking, and reconcile them with what he wants, Monroe and all her beautiful chaos.
I loved the dive into Regency Austin, I also adore the changes made with Monroe-Lizzy who has a different personality, intentions, and knowledge of blunders that made the story full of more heartache than might be necessary. How she went about trying to fix it was so fun to watch.
I adored this book. So worth the read.

I enjoyed many parts of the story. I loved both main characters. How they each grew together and separately was written nicely. I liked the homage to the original P&P. The side characters added nicely. I listened to this one and the narrators did really great. The story had a good flow to it. There was one part of the book where the heroine was in a dream. That overall was good but it did go a little long for myself. That is a definite your mileage may vary. What I didn't like so much was the sexual innuendo towards the end. There wasn't fade to black but one scene walked you up to the door. Hard to explain while keeping it vague so no spoilers. A married couple ready for and excited for Valentine's day but not long scene, explicit or detailed. There were just a few cheeky, light hearted innuendos for most of the book. Towards the end there was some more so maybe ya or older reader. Still not like pg-13 movies nowadays and the book is still closed door and clean, no language. Without those scenes or lines a 5 star for me and with a 3.75/4. Good writing but just not my style of read. I say still give this a try and try the companion read by Becky Monson.

If you enjoy the movie “Austenland” I think you’ll really enjoy this one. It’s adorable. Were there some parts I was getting a bit worried about? Yes, but let me explain.

I feel it’s only fair to put a disclaimer and warn you that my review may have some *spoilers ahead.*
I was thrown for a loop when Monroe had her accident and what came next. I was cautious moving forward because I’ve never read a book that has done this. But as I read on it made more sense and it worked out! There is a reason for it and it completely made sense and was really cute.

Monroe is an adorable mess with the sweetest heart and Alastair (Fitz) is pretty dang sweet himself. I liked how she didn’t just accept the I love you and wanted to make sure he actually loved her for her. I loved all the side characters and I really enjoyed their interaction with each other.

Parts that stood out:
-Okay, first off there’s a map. Love that. Second, there is a list of “the cast” for this book and I am already laughing.

CW: closed door (make outs only), mild swearing

Loved this modern take on P&P

I read this based on a recommendation from the Pride and Prejudice Book Club Podcast. This ended up being a fresh enjoyable P&P variation.

In the story, you get an amazingly loving and caring Monroe, who is able to see the joy in life and desires to be a help to anyone she sees in need. At the beginning of the story, we meet two young teenagers who end up becoming lifelong friends because they can see each other for the true people they are not what the world sees them as. They navigate class, financial, society, and cultural differences. Then take them both on a fun experience of dropping them into a reenactment experience of Pride and Prejudice. The characters that are introduced are absolutely fun to see interacting with our main characters. I absolutely enjoyed the couple who played Mr. and Mrs. Bennet.

This is not a retelling of Pride and Prejudice but putting in characters in a similar circumstances and seeing how life changes.

I did get the audiobook to go with, and that was enjoyable especially with the double narrators.
