Highland Bride

Rate this book
To unite their clans, Kara Gordon is bound by a marriage contract to the McKie family. So when her intended husband dies in a bloody mountain skirmish, she is forced to marry his heir and younger brother, Henry, a mere twelve-year-old boy. Trapped by fate, Kara fears their union--and its consummation. Much to her relief, the new earl is more in need of a mother's care than a lover's touch. Yet one man longs for Kara's caress--Henry's advisor and protector, his half-brother Ian. His attraction to Kara inflames into a scandalous desire that puts them both in great danger as forces both outside and inside the castle are lying in wait to remove Henry from the throne--by any means necessary. But for Kara, who has never once known the love of another, her feelings cannot be denied. And only Ian's undying devotion will embolden her to face a future fraught with intrigue--one that may destroy everyone she holds closest to her heart....

*SPOILER*
Okay.. I get it, she’s in an arranged marriage with a teenage boy and she has a a crush on his older half brother. But she’s married even if she looks after the boy like an older sister, they are legally married. I don’t know why in my head I thought she would wait for the boy to be older and then get the marriage annulled. But she just jumped right into an affair with the half brother. And I had to quit reading it. I can’t with all that.

So I read this book for a challenge this month, and I'm so glad I got it out of the way. Yuck!

There were so many elements about this story that seriously creeped me out, starting with the fact that the heroine is married off to a 13 year old at the beginning of the book. She is not 16 or even 18, she is in her mid-twenties. Ew! Luckily, there is no consummation (although he tries at one point and it totally grossed me out!), but she falls in love with his older brother and they enter into an affair. The kid finds out and they begin to co-exist in a happy little twisted family.

Everything at the end was tied up with a pretty bow and a twist that was never even hinted at, and came out of left field.

I couldn't get through it fast enough. I did give it two stars because it had some redeeming moments, and the love story itself between Kara and Ian was nice.

Good read

A very good read. Not the same story as many other Scottish romances. It earned my five stars. I am now going to the first in series.

Great story, loved these characters

This was a great story and the characters were so well written that you believe you are in the story with them! The storyline was very new and so well written that I could not put it down until I had finished it. I am putting this author on my must read list!!

I was a little apprehensive to start reading this book since Ms. Colleen French is a new historical Scottish author for me and it seems I only read certain authors in this genre but Ms. French has a wonderful way of telling a very interesting involved story. Even though this book is also part of a series you can read the book as a standalone with no problems because it was exactly what I did anyway. The characters are very three dimensional, engaging and personable you can’t help but love the characters rooting that good will triumph over evil plus hope something horrible will happen to the bad guys. The setting is rich with exact descriptions that you can easily imagine the places described that it instantly made for quite a page turner of a book and one very difficult to put down.
Kara in order to solve the unrest between their clans is promised and bound by a marriage contract to a young thirteen year old boy Harailt Gordon Lord of Dunnane called Harry to his intimates. Kara is shocked by not the motherly feelings she feels for Harry by being mostly ignored by his own mother but the strong lustful physical attraction and true love that she feels for Harry’s half brother Ian. Dare she tell Ian or even express how she feels but what if Ian feels the same for Kara as well? Their forbidden love could not only destroy their clan but them too.
When I started reading this book I instantly just fell and crushed on Ian Munro wow what a guy! Okay he was handsome, strong, and stoic also he’s a highlander so what’s not to like? He makes everyone feel wanted, needed, protected and loved no matter who they were in the clan sure he didn’t like or trust Dungald but neither did I. The intimacy was not only forbidden but so steamy between Ian and Kara that I swear either I was blushing a lot or smiling the rest of the time. What a perfect book boyfriend even though he is forbidden? Kara seemed like such a good heroine to Ian even though I couldn’t help but be a little jealous of her. I did get a little annoyed at her attitude with Harry and how she treated him especially when he seemed to grow up overnight. I also felt a bit sorry for him he seemed to get the worst but had the best attitude especially between Kara and Ian’s love. I think I admired him most of all considering the betrayal and the cheating because in actuality he did mind but didn’t want to lose them both what amazingly grownup person despite his age. I did want to see was a happy ending for Isla and hopefully Robert the Red will get his story told maybe Ms. French will write about them next in the upcoming books. When his older brother is killed in a skirmish, 12-year-old Harry McKie, the new Lord Dunnane, inherits not only leadership of the clan and his brother's title, but also his brother's betrothed, Kara Gordon. Forced into a farce of a marriage with a mere boy, Kara becomes more of a mother to the young Lord Dunnane. Kara is not the only one helping Harry grow into manhood and his role as leader of the clan, his half-brother Ian is also there to protect and guide him. As Kara and Ian work together to help Harry mature and fend off challengers to his hold over the clan from both within and outside, they find their attraction to each other growing into something neither one of them can or want to fight. How will they resolve their feelings for each other with their love for and need to protect Harry? Can they satisfy their own desires without betraying their duty to their laird and family?

I enjoyed the unique plot of this book in that it described realistically the challenges forced arranged marriages would likely face, however, I found the ending disappointing. I can't say why without giving spoilers, but suffice it to say that the story conclusion seems unlikely at best. Still, the flowing prose and rich descriptions make the scenes of this book vivid and the action is non-stop. Fans of historical fiction will enjoy this book, and I hope Isla gets her own story!

Having loved the two previous books in this series, I was disappointed in this one. Found it rather far fetched; how anyone could believe that either, they wouldn't be found out skulking around the castle or, she wouldn't become pregnant is a simpleton. Found it unbelievable that they would risk their lives in this way. An honourable man, which Ian was at the beginning, would have told his brother of his feelings at the time he asked permission to leave the castle. Harry adored his elder brother and I'm sure they could have come up with a solution that would have enabled Kara and Ian getting together, with Harry's knowledge and consent. To cuckold him as they did, left an unpleasant taste in the mouth and I found it difficult to believe that Ian and Kara cared about the boy, let alone loved him as they claimed. It therefore dropped 1 star for me. I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review.

This Medieval romance was as terrific as the Highland Lord and Highland Lady but it more suspenseful and had a very unique story line, unique in that I hadn’t read this trope in an historical romance before. This bride (Kara) was married by her father to an heir that was still a 12-year-old boy. As you can guess, there were lots of obstacles for Kara to overcome to have a relationship of some kind with her husband. And then there was the unexpected obstacle of falling for her husband’s older brother (Ian) and the obstacle of her husband’s evil cousin who wanted the throne for himself. There were moments of cliffhanging suspense fraught with danger and moments of affection and love in this story. It was quite an exciting romance and I loved every minute of it!

This is the third book in the Scottish Fire Series, by Colleen French, but can be read as a standalone. As with the other two titles in the series, I was given a copy of this book by eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review. This book had a unique storyline and I was kept riveted to the page, as I just could not for the life of me figure out how the obstacles separating the lovers Ian and Kara could be eliminated. Well my inability to put the book down was rewarded by a jaw-dropping revelation that put every plot twist and turn in a brand new light. I thoroughly enjoyed this entire series and look forward to reading more novels by Ms. French due to her refreshingly unique approach to historical romance set in the highlands of Scotland.

This was an ok read. It was written well and had a good plot. I think it took me so long to read because I couldn't really get into it. Mostly due to the nature of the relationships. I just couldn't get past the 'wrong' feeling it gave me. Overall it was good and the last third of the book moved a little faster and focused more outside the relationships. Good characters, with flaws, and a good ending altogether. Good Luck
