A mystery of a little girl long ago missing and presumed dead. Beginning one hot summer day Detective Grace McKenna starts seeing flashes of images involving a spiderweb of various townspeople, some natives and some outsiders, and just what happens when some people take the law into their own hands and what happens when some live a lifetime covering up the truth and hiding from the past. She must untangle the web and make sense of who is the victim and who is the villain.
Great plot and beautiful imagery to keep the reader engaged and allow one to play detective along with Grace McKenna. This is my second Kate Anslinger read and it does not disappoint! I especially love that you can read these as stand-alone books. However, you would be remiss to pass on her first book of the McKenna Mystery series The Gift because it’s such a great introduction to Grace and her ‘gift’ and truly getting to know her and some of the supporting characters like her swoon-worthy boyfriend Mark, feisty Barb, and her loving mother Ellen—making it even harder to witness what she’s going through health-wise in this story.

Office Grace is back. I was so excited to hear there was going to be a follow up to Kate Anslinger's 2017 triller The Gift. The Gift and this amazing follow up Buried Secrets is set in the small beach town of Bridgeton, MA. The town is as much as character as Grace and Mark are. It's fun to see the town and all the secrets it has hidden.
Buried Secrets is set in the summer in Bridgeton and gives us a look at how the town changes as the area heats up. The book opens on Grace closing out and putting away all the files dealing with her last big case (from The Gift), when she is asked to respond to a small traffic accident. This mundane event in the town will set Grace off on a new and exciting adventure into the depths of the many secrets hidden in Bridgeton.
The characters in this book are varied and interesting. Your favorites are back as well, Barb and her wild personality, Mark and of course Brody and Ellen.
This book is well paced and a real page turner. I honestly couldn't put the book down and was so sad when it was over. I can't wait to see what happens next to Grace and Bridgeton.

A highly addictive series that does not disappoint. While this is the second book it can be read as a stand-alone. I was hooked from page one with the suspense and twists from the character Grace’s latest case. We see more visions and are taken on a ride not knowing where the story will lead. I have found a new must read author and cannot for her next story.

A beautifully woven intriguing mystery!!

In a small town of Massachusetts named Bridgeton, lot of mysteries abound. The lady detective of Bridgeton PD Grace McKenna who has paranormal abilities is trying to get to the bottom of the mystery of the vision she has when she met Miriam, a little old lady who has been organizing community events for over 35 years with resounding success. Grace starts her investigation into finding out who the man in her vision is, the relationship between Miriam and the man, her other case of drunken driving that almost hit Miriam and all the thrilling events that follow.

How Grace connects all the events to bring a peaceful and happy resolution forms the thrilling content of the rest of the book. The narrative is very good, smooth flowing and takes the readers on an effortless journey through the story. The characters are delightful and charming particularly Barb, Marty, Sullivan among others.

This was the first book by Ms. Anslinger I read and it was a totally enjoyable, gripping and absorbing read. I do hope that I have more books by this author in my collection!!

Love a good mystery and Kate Anslinger did not disappoint. This was my first book by this author but will not be my last. I am excited to read book #1 in the McKenna Mystery series to learn more about Grace and the town she works in (and look forward to book #3). Being from New England, I enjoyed the local references to Boston and Dunkins. It added something to the story for me, allowing me to truly envision the story and not just be words on a page.

This story is creepy and so good! The author writes with full description and gave us a strong female MC. There are a few twists that makes you feel jumpy making it tough to put down! Although I have not read the first book of this series, I did not feel lost so it can be read as a stand alone. I won this ARC in exchange for my review.

Grace McKenna is back on the case, this time trying to solve the mystery vision she saw in the eyes of a local do-gooder.

Although I felt that it ended abruptly, even though all loose ends were tied up. However, this book does not disappoint. It was a fun read!

Kate Anslinger is a new to me author, and I definitely will be reading more of her in the future. Grace McKenna is a detective with an unique gift. When she looks into the eyes of criminals, she can see their crimes, so that tends to make solving certain crimes a bit more complicated as she has to do it on the downlow. Obviously, people wouldn't understand this gift, especially on her small town police force, so she tends to do a lot of her police work under a cloud of secrecy. Her latest case starts off like any routine call, but leads to all kinds other stuff as the woman named Miriam involved seems to have quite the past. And that's all that I'm willing to give away, as Buried Secrets is a mystery with a ton of suspense which means there are a ton of twists which are f-bomb dropping worthy. There's also quite the cast of secondaries with secrets, and secrets just don't make friends, so I started becoming suspicious of damn near everyone with the exception of a select few. And those few almost stole the show for me, as they were all kinds of entertaining. My issue was it took me a bit to get fully immersed, as I was a bit confused at first to everything being thrown at me, and while all questions seemed to be answered, the ending still was a bit too abrupt for me. Anyway, I am excited to read more about Grace's adventures in crime fighting, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

The author grabs your attention right away with one of Grace's mental images - the ones we became familiar with in The Gift. Impressively, although there are some references to the story from The Gift, Buried Secrets stands alone. We learn more about Grace and the small beach town she works in. The author has a way of bringing the characters to life in a way that makes you not only able to visualize them, but to feel like you've actually had conversations with them yourself. Buried Secrets, the second in the Grace McKenna series doesn't disappoint. The story will captivate readers and will leave them wondering how the various pieces of this new mystery fit together. There are twists and turns along the way that lead the reader in one direction, only to end in a surprising result that ties up a different loose end in the story. Highly recommended for those who like character-based mystery novels. I was given an advance e-version of this book to review.

You know the saying about walking a mile in someone else's shoes? Well, Grace McKenna does that to an extent with criminals, by looking into their eyes. Is what she can do a blessing or a curse though? The answer might depend on the day you ask.

After solving one case, she finds herself unexpectedly faced with another, this time the secrets revolve around her town after responding to a traffic accident. What seems to be routine soon turns into so much more and she isn't sure she's ready for the answers she might find. But, with the help of her boyfriend and former cop, Mark, she knows she can do it. Right?

What secrets will be revealed? How many people will they impact? Will things ever be the same?

One-click now and follow along as lives are changed. On a personal note, the characters aren't perfect, but instead are relatable, aside from Grace's ability, of course. However, the romance seemed to take second place to the suspense aspect and at times I questioned the stability of it as it appeared like Grace remembered she was in a relationship when it was convenient for her. Also, I wish I had known this was the second in the series. the first being The Gift, prior to reading this book.

I was able to dowload this book through Bookbub, and as I like mysteries and have never read this author before, I decided to give it a try. It was certainly interesting, intriguing and a page turner, so for that I thank the author, and I started this series at Book 2, so perhaps not recommended method of reading.

What I didn't like was the extreme overuse of descriptive language, e.g. in one paragraph we are told what a woman looked like from the top of her head to her feet, describing every shape of the body and details about the clothing. Now I think this is important for the main protagonists, but to use this method to describe an unimportant man who appears at a parade near the end of the story is definitely overkill, namely the black and white hairs on his chest seen from his opened-neck shirt matched the black and white hairs on his head. LOL The ending of the story was also quite abrupt.

The detective part of the story was quite well done, and I expect Kate Anslinger could become quite a good mystery or suspense writer.

I'm really torn on this one. The premise fascinated me. Seeing dead people in the killers' eyes? Right up my alley. And I have to say, those parts were written especially well as Grace's visions spilled onto the page along with her visceral reactions to them.

The remainder of the book, though a good mystery, could have used a talented editor to remove all the repeated phrases and sentences. They detracted from what could have been a smooth, tighter storytelling (reading?) experience. If those extraneous words were used for deeper character development instead, especially that of Grace's boyfriend, I would have felt more connected to the characters overall. I can't even remember the poor guy's name! He came across very superficial, as did their relationship.

To be fair, I did enjoy the "bad" people, their motives, etc. Unlike some other mystery novels, they were not portrayed one-dimensionally. Kudos to the author there.

So, to be fair to my review and the book as a whole, I got the audiobook I think for free from Amazon, and I was not aware when I started the book that it was basically an AI reading of it. And not a new AI that has the ability to give inflection and variations of the voice to adjust for what’s happening in the story, but an old AI that was boring, stiff, and was mispronouncing words. Terrible! Would not recommend!

Now that that’s over, I didn’t really like the story either. I found Grace to be flat and obnoxious. Sounds like she went straight to being a detective cause that’s what she wanted, which isn’t how that works. Her constantly talking about hating exercise and not wanting to move, and then being winded and needing to sit after chasing someone was a terrible representation of a female police officer. We don’t need any more bad stereotypes played into. Thanks!

The story line wasn’t all that original in my opinion. Honestly, I didn’t enjoy this at all.

Grace is back on the job with her gift kicking in and getting her further into the lives and secrets of the residents in her town. The more she dives into the mystery her gift alerts her too the more we learn about the people around her, including issues with her mother. This is a great addition to Grace's series with plenty of awkward moments for Mark to rescue her from and chances for her to do some good as well. I like how the author doesn't leave Grace as simple as black and white and allows her to be human. I do have problems with her and Mark but only because I feel like their relationship is almost forgotten until she does some sleuthing and needs his help. I personally am okay without the graphic details but I still need a reason to feel the feels between them. All in all it's a great read and I am enjoying Grace.

A lady was almost run over by a car. A lady cop Mirium went to check it out. A drunk man was close to running up on the curb and bus stop. The lady cop has a knack for having some visions about things that goes on in her live. The old woman said shes fine and wants to hurry off. Mirium got this feeling like somehow she knows this woman. Why did she leave so quickly from the scene. She later checks things out and she find that this woman was a volunteer of all kinds of places in town. Later she finds that she had a young daughter who was kidnapped many years ago and never found.Seems the town people didnt like giving information or telling old secrets. Did maybe this older woman find and kill the man she assumed kidnapped her daughter so many years ago. Was she hidding that or what .

Mother's Revenge! 4.3***** Spoiler Alert!

Grace worked backwards to solve her two intertwined visions of Miriam killing Surfer Steve and Judy burying Annabelle's body after abducting her from the aquarium. While she arrested Judy, she kept Miriam's confession to herself until his (Surfer Steve's) body washed ashore. Father and daughter Jenn the stylist, reunited once he sobered up, and Christie and Scott, Annabelle's older surviving brother, named their newborn, Annabelle Grace. We were left in the dark about Ellen's failing mental acuity, and the whereabouts of Bill/Bob and the kid he killed. Hopefully these will be resolved in the next novel, as her and Mark's relationship continues to blossom. A Must-Read!!

This book has a solid premise, but the execution doesn’t always live up to it. The mystery takes its time to unfold, sometimes to the point where momentum stalls, and a few scenes feel drawn out without adding much new information. McKenna remains an interesting lead, but the supporting characters aren’t all given the same level of depth, which makes parts of the investigation feel narrower than they should. The reliance on past events driving the present works thematically, but some revelations arrive with less impact than expected. This is a book that will appeal to readers who prefer slow, methodical investigations, but those looking for sharper pacing or more tension may find it uneven. Not a bad read, but one that doesn’t fully capitalise on its potential.

Very interesting

To me, the story was a five star accomplishment. I rate the overall narrative a four star only be cause I didn’t think the character were very well developed. Christie solved the mysteries well enough but she just didn't capture my interest as a person. Her mom, Ellen appeared at various times in the story, in fact Ellen was to be evaluated for dementia but there was no followup to her doctor's appointment.

Over all the story was captivating and entertaining. I appreciated that Kate Anslingernever tried to use sex, foul language or violance to help sell her tale.

This is the second book in the series. Unfortunately, it was as just as bad as the first book, if not worse. I had to skim through this book, just like I did the first book because it was so dull. The author seems to obsess with things. She writes so much about her boyfriend and his healthy eating and his muscles and how he is so kind and wonderful to ad nauseum. She starts about her mother and dementia. It adds nothing to the story and seems to be filler, that went nowhere.

What was even more annoying is how the author ended the book with a bunch of unconvincing coincidences that wrapped the whole story up in a nice little package. This convenient ending to the story was a big let-down, but what did I expect from this unexciting book.

Kate Anslinger’s Buried Secrets features a woman with an unlikely gift (curse?) – the ability to look into the eyes of a killer and see their crime. Early in the story Detective Grace McKenna is faced with such a vision which sets her on a path to discovering a horrible truth.

Grace is a very likable character and one that I can see readers easily engaging with. The small town of Bridgeton is the setting for the story and adds a ton of flavor to the story.

The twists at the end of the novel made for an extremely satisfying ending.

I probably would have given this book 4 stars if not for one question? I can't go to far into it, as it would be a spoiler and I do not want to do that. So to not give too much away: Question: When the skull washed up on shore, and later a facial picture was made, why did not Miriam recognize the picture? Or, did I miss something? Why only Harris and not Miriam also? I did like how all the puzzle pieces finally did fit together though.

I received this book free from Goodreads for a honest opinion.

A captivating mystery where Detective Grace McKenna, equipped with her unique ability to see the victims' experiences in a criminal's eyes, finds herself confronted with Miriam Caverly, an older woman harboring a past shrouded in mystery. The author masterfully weaves together the lives of intriguing characters, from the tormented town drunk to a family burdened by tragedy. An intense page-turner with a fast-paced plot, combined with well-crafted twists and turns, leaves readers eagerly guessing until the very end.

I really enjoyed this story! Even though this was the second book in the series, I did not feel like I was missing anything for not having read the first book. (Which I want to go get now).

The Policewoman Grace can see visions when looking into peoples eyes.. which brings her to investigate based on her visions. This is a good story that keeps you guessing. I really enjoyed this book and story!

A great story. Between imaginary and reality. However...

Waist of time flashing every detail of Mark's gymn but not the police station or even where their house.
A flaw in not revealing more of the many characters, past and present relations and how they come to an intersection. Plus the author could use a more refined writing.
This isn't a critique but an incentive to do better.

I read these books out of order but it did not take away from the series. It actually helped fill in some of the blanks. I really like this book. I like the main characters in the series, they are easy to like. Grace has a "special gift" that helps her to solve mysterious crimes in her town. Looking them in the eye gives her insight to their lives and character. I hope to see more of Grace in the future.

Police Officer Grace McKenna has a secret….she sees the unlawful acts committed when she looks into a criminal’s eyes. Sent on a call where the local town drunk has been in an accident, she is caught up in a vision when she meets Miriam Caverly, upstanding citizen…well maybe not so much. As Grace digs deep into these Buried Secrets, more then one mystery will be solved. An interesting yet somewhat tangled novel with great characters.
