If even the most powerful kings can become pawns, is anyone safe?
Breaking out of castle arrest and being found in my nightdress in the middle of the forest is a surefire way to gain the infamous ire of King Nikoli. Notably more so when there is substantial evidence to prove that the man who aided my jailbreak is one of the very same men who landed me there from the start.
Alaceandra is the name, being the only heir to Tikilium land is my game, but most people just tend to call me Lace. This morning I reached the magickal age of majority at twenty-four, and my father is already set to ship me off to the prince of Helomasi. I have yet to even come into my powers, but patience has never been a virtue of King Nikoli. I always knew I would be a tool he used to gain more footing in Ptheryeth, but never did I guess that he would make his move so soon. As far as my father is concerned, I am simply the final piece that ensures his checkmate.
What he fails to realize? A king is nothing without his pawns and losing your most powerful piece too soon can lose you the game…
Vines and Daggers is Book 1 in the Powerful Pawns series by Rauri Rose. A reverse haremfantasy romance.
I love all things romance. I have been writing ever since I was a teen, and have always found beauty in the way throwing oneself into a book lets them experience the world around them and worlds unknown in the safety of their reading nook. At home I spend my time writing and keeping up with my four cats Atticus, Shadow, Midnight and Belle. I have a ton of ideas to share and hope that you enjoy this wild ride with me. Thank you for visiting my page.
So I will start this review by fully disclosing that this phenomenal work of art was created by one of my favorite humans in the entire universe. I have had the immense pleasure of editing and ARC reading pre-release while supporting her as a friend through all of the steps before she becomes a bonafide writer in a mere few weeks(as far as I’m concerned, she already is).
With that disclosure out of the way. . . I believe the kindest thing a friend can do is be honest with you and with others about you. I can wholly, honestly, truthfully say that I L O V E this book. I used to be an early days romantasy reader, but I had recently fallen out of reading nearly all together. I’ve taken to audiobooks that I play while working/driving/etc and then call it a day. I hadn’t picked up and finished a physical copy of a book for the last four years unless it was poetry, a graphic novel, or horror. That was until I received my beta copy of Vines and Daggers. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. I found myself vacuumed into the world that Rauri has created- the land, the characters, everything. She takes the perfect amount of time to build the plot and background, then before you know it…. BAM. You’re 19 chapters in, it’s 2am but time has stopped existing, you’ve already called out of work the next day so you can finish reading in one sitting, and you absolutely cannot put this book down until you know what happens. I often find with romantasy that I get lost in descriptions or lose interest when they oversimplify yet over-sex female leads, but she has managed to keep the sexy spice without losing the identity of her characters. The characters felt REAL. She managed to fix my hatred of “damsel in distress” tropes by addressing that, yes- she has male supporters and main characters that aide her… however! Her interest lies within self improvement/discovery and while she starts weak(a literal princess who has been intentionally kept in the dark her entire life against her will so she can be used as a pawn), she is constantly strengthening her skills and taking it all on in stride. I also love that none of her improvement simply happens overnight and all of her problems just fade away; it’s a slow progression much like it would be IRL. Lace was such an easy MC to follow and relate to as the story progressed. For the men? This novel gives you a fine array of options where I truly believe there is at least one of the three male MCs that you won’t help but be able to love. Two questions: 1.) Who’s your favorite? 2.) Why is it Sorin?
As far as spice? Medium burn, medium spice. Call me Goldilocks, but I think it’s juuuuuuuust right. Reverse harem is a newer reading concept for me, but I appreciate how it is written with shameless openness and respect shown to each character. I love a good dark romance here and there, but reading this book that is focused heavily on female-based consent was a breath. of. fresh. air. The spicy scenes are well written, intriguing, and actually manage to strengthen the plot versus some novels that I have read where it feels like the smut was just thrown in for the sake of having smut. The romance aspect is incredibly well developed and it is incredibly easy to connect with their relationships.
Overall- 5/5 ⭐️ every single time. This book renewed my desire to truly read romantasy again. Ever since putting it down, I have been begging for the sequel and I have legitimately lost sleep thinking about all of the possibilities to my unanswered questions. I love this author, I love this book, I love the endless possibilities it has ahead of it, and I’ll love when you love it too.
Definitely give this debut indie novel some love, it deserves it and so do you. ❤️

This book was a fun ride! There were a lot of great things in this one - why choose romance, spice, prophecies, enemies to lovers, a unique magic system, one bed, all the banter, nicknames, and so much more!
We start with our FMC Lace after she finds out her father has arranged her marriage with a prince in order to create an alliance between their 2 kingdoms. After disobeying her father’s orders once again, she gets shipped off to the nameless prince’s kingdom months early.
But fear not! 2 of her closets friends/allies/crushes, Sorin and Sam, disguise themselves as 2 of the king’s trusted men in order to join her on her journey.
Chaos ensues after the 4 of them fall through a portal, but that’s when all the fun begins. 😏 the spice was well written, and I’m always here for clear consent. It was always verbal agreement from Lace, or nothing continued. Gotta love our consent kings. 💕 and the spice in this one has a real plot purpose beyond the just being thrown in for the spicy why choose romance side of the story. I really liked that aspect of her growing relationships with the MMCs.
Lace’s growth as a character in general and with her magic was fantastic, and I can’t wait to see more of that as the series progresses. That ending was heart wrenching, so be prepared to dive straight into Book 2 after finishing this one.
This book is a great start to what I think is going to be a fantastic why choose fantasy romance series! Thank you so much Rauri Rose for the gifted copy of this one! 🗡️
This book was fantastic, I’m so glad I got the chance to beta read for this new author! I don’t typically read romance books because I find the plots often lacking but this book was entertaining from all sides. I’ve been in a reading slump for years but this took me out of it, I couldn’t put it down. The pacing was great, once I got hooked I was locked in the entire time and I didn’t find it predictable at all, there were so many twists especially at the end! The spicy scenes were well written, and made sense for the plot that they happened when they happened which is not always the case in my experience with romance book. It’s definitely not the darkest romance novel(so far, who knows what she does next in the series) but it’s a great start for anyone wanting to dip their toes in darker romance waters. I’ve always been a huge fan of fantasy and this is such a good fantasy book in my opinion. I’ve been struggling to find a good fantasy novel that gave me the same thrill of the young adult fantasy novels from my teenage years and this finally did it for me while being a fully adult story with adult characters and a delightful animal sidekick. The main character is so relatable and so real I fell in love with her so fast, and her supporting cast are endearing and complicated in specifically unique ways. I really don’t want to spoil anything in this review you really have to discover this story for yourself. This writer is truly such a good storyteller, especially dealing with a unique magic system, she explains just enough and lets you figure out the rest. Definitely would recommend this book to as many people as possible and now I’m desperate for the next book in the series!!
Have you read a book that was just perfect? That's Vine and Daggers for me. I got the book as an ARC and couldn't wait to read it. We have fantasy, romance, adventure, secrets, reverse harem, betrayal, sign me up!
The premise of the book is that Alaceandra has a controlling father, the King, who signed her up to get married to someone she never met, the Prince (we don't find out his name in this book). The Prince doesn't seem great at first but quickly turns out. Especially when her two King guards follow her to the Princes house.
The amount of secrets and lies in this book is crazy! Like I must know more. Why do people want Lace so bad? What more is Sam hiding? Why is Sorin perfect? Lol. I need more. And that ending? Not fair! I need more!
Just all around a perfect book filled with magic and creatures and romance. Also we have some spice and it's spicy 🥵
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I loved Lace, she was a great fmc. A little bit naive in the beginning but her character growth was fantastic. Totally rooting for her. I fell in love with the prickly prince, and he doesn’t even have a name, we never find out his name. I especially loved Sam, is his name really Sam tho? And don’t get me started on Sorin!!!! That sweet hunk of a man Sorin! I am still reeling from this book! I cannot wait for the second one. Bravo Raurie Rose, I am in love with these powerful pawns 😏 and insanely jealous of Lace.
I received an ARC copy of this book which I’m very grateful for… A great start to what im sure will be a great series! This book was fast paced and really got your attention from the start. The romance was out of this world definitely a top read for this month!
I really loved reading this book!! I think Lace’s adventures through this complex world full of secrets and mysterious intentions is very relevant for women in todays world. I also really love this world build and I love how the author combines it with exploring sexuality in a beautiful way! This world is also one of the first fantasy books I’ve read that really explores combining technology and magic in culture. I would recommend to anyone who likes unique and beautiful creatures, prophecies, dark romance, and funny dialogue!
Hold onto your crowns because this book is an absolute whirlwind! I was hooked from the start and captivated through to the last page.
Here’s what you can expect: 👑 Royalty 👑 Reverse Harem 👑 Prophecy 👑 Arranged Betrothal 👑 One Bed 👑 Banter 👑 Magic
There is plenty of action and adventure, not to mention wildly addictive mysteries that kept my brain spinning.
Lace is a great character, leaping right off the page and into my heart, taking me on every twist and turn with her inseparable partners-in-crime, Sorin and Sam. Lace is the kind of FMC you root for: a princess with a destiny, forced to play by her cruel father’s rules, but secretly dreaming of wild freedom and epic journeys.
And of course there’s royal drama! An arranged betrothal, a mysterious prince (who doesn’t even reveal his name the entire book!) and a new kingdom that’s crawling with secrets. The chemistry between Lace and the prince starts off as a flicker, but trust me, by the end it’s a full-blown firestorm.
Then there’s Sorin. This guy is the definition of best friend AND boyfriend goals: loyal, strong, sensual, and sizzling with chemistry. Watching their friendship evolve into something much more was perfection!
And Sam is the walking embodiment of shady but irresistible. He has so many secrets, I’m practically bursting trying to guess what he’s hiding.
The best part of this book? Because this is a reverse harem, Lace doesn’t have to pick just one! Plus, the plot is layered with lots of intriguing mysteries: Why is everyone after Lace? What’s the deal with her magic? What’s the prophecy that hangs over her head? And for the love of everything magical… WHAT IS THE PRINCE’S NAME?
If I had one tiny gripe, it’s the dialogue. Most of the time – but not always – the characters use formal, proper English (think “do not,” “cannot,” “have not”), but when the princess is dropping F-bombs and other curse words, and it seems out of place. For this reason, I’ve given it four stars.
Overall, Vines & Daggers was an exciting, mysterious, romance, and action-packed adventure and I can’t wait for the next book!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book had good potential. It was shrouded in mystery and kept you on your toes. I was interested in the world, but there wasn't a ton of world building or explanation of the magic system. So I would have loved a little more build up on that front. It was also pretty fast paced with short chapters, which made this is pretty easy read.
The book follows the FMC, Alaceandra, and 3 MMCS, Sorin, Sam, and The Prince. In the beginning, there were some really interesting elements about her connection to these men, how they each might affect her power and her future. But this was never flushed out, and I really wish it was! The rest of the series might expand on this a little more, and I hope it does because that was different and was a unique element.
I did not really get attached to any of the characters, and their dynamic was just weird. Part of it is a result of the mystery element - fine. However, the FMC was just not it. While this book tried to make her grow into herself and her power, she was simultaneously coddled nearly the entire book, which made her a super stale character for me. The MMCs were more interesting.
There also was just a little too much unnecessary spice, when there should have been a little more plot progression or world building. I'm all for the spice, but this was just a little overdone, and it was a little repetitive.
This was an interesting but slightly confusing read.
To start off this is definitely more of a fantasy romance than romantic fantasy imo. I also just want to say that I think there are good bones for the story, I just think there needed to be a bit more editing. There was not much world building and I feel like things were kind of randomly just thrown into the story. Like there was never an explanation of the magic system, one of the characters just all of a sudden had powers and then they all started too and there was a very brief like one sentence explanation of our FMC and how powers worked. I felt the same way with the prophecy and those bits of info as well.
As for the characters I do think they were good. The FMC did seem completely run by lust though and I feel like she just didn’t ask enough questions. The secrets all of the MMC’s were keeping was starting to grind my gears a bit too lol it just was too much miscommunication with no questions asked. I definitely wish we would’ve gotten a few more chapters from the MMCs’ POV’s.
As for the plot I am interested in to see where it goes, as I said before I think this series has room to grow I think some details just need to be a bit more fine tuned.
*also thank you to the author and Crowns and Chaos PR for the ARC*
✨ Book Review ✨ Vines and Daggers by Rauri Rose — ★★★★☆
I was given the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review, and honestly? I had such a good time with it.
Rauri Rose builds a world that’s both rich and complex, yet never so busy that you lose track. The pacing? Perfectly balanced—not too fast, not too slow. The plot kept me guessing in the best way, and the spice level? I’d give it a solid 🌶️🌶️🌶️.
This is a reverse harem (which I’m an absolute sucker for), and Lace, our FMC, is relatable in all the right ways. It’s also a fantastic entry point for anyone wanting to dip their toes into the world of dark romance.
What I especially loved is how the story centers the female experience in sex and consent—something that makes the romance feel not only hotter, but more meaningful.
📚 Dark romance lovers (and future dark romance lovers), this one’s for you.
Vines and Daggers is such a fun why-choose fantasy packed with prophecies, an intriguing magic system, enemies-to-lovers tension, banter, nicknames, and all the chaos I love.
Our FMC Alaceandra aka Lace won me over immediately. She’s a little firecracker. She doesn’t cower, she doesn’t blindly obey her father the king, and her magic is both powerful and beautifully wild. Was she a bit naïve in the beginning? Absolutely. But the character growth she goes through is so satisfying.
After a bit of chaos involving Sam and Sorin her closest friends, allies, and… yes, crushes her father ships her off early to an arranged marriage. And those two? They are not about to let her go quietly. I won’t spoil anything, but I adored their connection and dynamic. Then we have the Prince, an absolute asshole at first but trust me, he will surprise you.
This book is full of secrets, lies, twists, and delicious tension. The world-building was rich, the spice sits at a medium burn, and ohh was it fun. I genuinely enjoyed this story, and thank the gods I had book two ready because I needed answers immediately.
This was such a fun, engaging read! I don’t normally reach for romance since I often find the plots predictable, but this one had enough twists and tension to keep me turning pages. It even pulled me out of a long reading slump, which says a lot.
The pacing was strong, especially once the story hit its stride, and the romance blended nicely with the fantasy elements. The spice felt purposeful and well-timed for the plot. While it’s not the darkest romance I’ve read, it’s a great introduction for readers curious about darker themes.
As a longtime fantasy fan, I loved the unique magic system and the balance of action, mystery, and romance. The main character is relatable, the supporting cast is layered and endearing, and the animal sidekick was a delight. My only small critique is that a few sections felt a bit safe, where I would have loved the author to push the tension or stakes even higher.
Overall, this is a strong start to a series I’ll definitely be continuing. It’s fresh, entertaining, and left me curious to see what comes next!
I am so happy that I got to read this, I was absolutely hooked within the first couple chapters! Definitely had me saying "just one more chapter!" And this was actually my first Reverse Harem, I devoured this within a couple days 🔥 I fell in love with the way Rauri describes the world in Vines and Daggers, and the magic system is so neat!
We get to follow our fmc Alaceandra (Lace) and her three men- Sorin, Sam & the prince (not named yet) as she flees "castle arrest" and the king (her controlling father) for arranging a marriage to a prince she's never met.
I adored everything about this story, the world building was well done, the reverse harem and spice was sooooo hot, secrets and twists galore- I need more answers! The pacing was great and towards the end- the suspense kept me awake; I had trouble sleeping because all I could think about was whats going to happen next?! Oh and this one is veryyy emotional (that ending omg, not fair 😭) like what? Way to rip my heart out! I need book 2- now! I legit wanted to throw my phone 😅
A great start to what I'm sure will be an unforgettable series!
From the very first page, this book had me hooked. It’s fast-paced, full of tension, and absolutely dripping with secrets. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough!
We follow Alaceandra—“Lace”—a princess trapped under the control of a father who clearly sees her more as a political pawn than a daughter. Without her say, he arranges for her to marry a Prince she’s never met. And while the Prince doesn’t exactly make the best first impression, wow does that shift. There’s definitely more to him than meets the eye… especially once her two King-appointed guards show up at his doorstep. That’s when things really start to unravel.
The layers of secrets in this story? Insane. I have so many questions—why is everyone after Lace? What is Sam still hiding? And don’t even get me started on Sorin… had me swooning so hard.
The magic, the creatures, the romance, the spice—it’s all there. It feels like the beginning of something epic, with just the right mix of danger and desire. And that ending?! Not okay. I need book two. Like, yesterday.
Vines and Daggers is book 1 of the Powerful Pawns series by Rauri Rose.
This follows the story of Alaceandra, princess of Tikilium. She’s forced into an arranged marriage to a prince of a far off land by her father for the good of her kingdom. She’s to leave behind everything she knows and every support system she loves including Sorin and Sam, her beloved guards.
What drew me into this story full force was Alaceandra’s strength. She didn’t cower in a corner and obey her father blindly. Instead she met the challenge head on and that is a trait that always makes me fall a little bit in love with those types of FMCs.
The world building that Rauri does is very rich. I never found myself wondering what certain aspects looked like or how characters presented themselves. Rauri paints a vivid picture that immerses the reader into the story.
I really recommend reading Vines and Daggers; it’s a great story but does end on a cliff hanger that leads right into book 2!
A really great read. I was lucky enough to be on the ARC team for this one. This is one of my first ARC reviews so bear with me! I enjoyed that the main character was relatable. Like I can actually believe that the FMC is a princess. I enjoyed the varying love interests too, they were unique and not just cookie cutter male characters. The book has an undertone of mystery and secrets with an overtone of self discovery. The subtitle says book 1 and I can’t wait to read the next book! I think, as book 1, it does a great job at establishing characters and introducing us the world. The premise of the FMCs evolving magic system is very unique and I can’t wait to see what it turns in to. If you like a romantasy with a relatable main character and a wtf ending that leaves you yearning to pick up the next book then READ THIS!!

I am so glad to have the next book to jump into after finishing the first one because that ending made me NEED to know what happens next!
This series follows a FMC princess whose father is just generally not a great dude, and had arranged her marriage to the prince of another kingdom. She must give up her little bits of freedom and be shipped off to this new kingdom just as she’s coming of age and leave behind her two closest friends. When she arrives, everything is not as it seems and she ends up escaping to the dark parts of the kingdom with these two friends and the prince she was promised to. Can she learn to protect herself and use her powers before the rest of the world catches up to them?
This was an exciting story to read full of lots of yearning between the FMC and her multiple male love interests, as she learns to harness her powers that are just starting to awaken. It’s a fun take on her magic getting stronger the closer she gets to these men and there’s plenty of banter between them all. Overall this was a fun read and I cannot wait for the next book! My rating 4.7/5!
Thanks to the author and Crowns and Chaos PR for the gifted copy!
𝙑𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘿𝙖𝙜𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙨 sweeps you into a world where magic, politics, and dangerous attraction tangle like—well—vines and daggers. 𝙇𝙖𝙘𝙚, our heroine, isn’t the kind to quietly accept being used as a pawn, even when her own father is pulling the strings. From the first escape scene to the simmering tension with the men in her orbit, this book blends fantasy court drama with slow-burn romance in a way that keeps you curious about who you can actually trust. It’s a little bit political chess match, a little bit dangerous fairy tale, and a whole lot of “just one more chapter” energy. If you like heroines who learn to play the game instead of being played, you’ll want to watch Lace take her first moves.
Reserve harem, prophecies, and a girl who doesn't know how powerful she is? Yes, please!
This book is a wild ride and has so many twists I genuinely didn’t see coming. I really loved the way the characters were portrayed and how they all learn about each other while stoking a budding romance. The why choose aspect here was done so flawlessly, and I loved watching it unfurl. There's just enough info about all the MMCs to hook you in but also enough mystery to make you desperate to want to know more. The plot is wonderfully done in a way that sucks you in, and I found the world easy to grasp. I appreciated the pacing and didn't feel like any parts were boring or dragged on.
That ending? I have SO many questions, and now I can't wait for book two!
Fantastic debut book! Great World Building! I finished this book in one seating. I couldn't put it down. There are mysteries, suspense, intrigue, steamy scenes and many adventures. Each character holds mystery and secrets that are slowly unraveling. KUDOS to Rauri on an excellent beginning!. I highly recommend this book!
I love reverse harems, and this did not disappoint. It is typical that King tells his daughter who to marry, which is an unknown prince. So many twists, turns, lies, and secrets. I could not put this book down once I cracked it open! Can't wait for more in this series. I received an advance review copy at no cost and am leaving this review voluntarily. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was such an amazing read! The story is full, the romance is both tender and spicy. The plot is is so packed with fantasy and adventure and a dash of political machinations. Truly a great read
I loved this book so much!! I was hooked within the first couple of chapters and kept telling myself “Just one more chapter” until suddenly it was way past midnight, and I was still reading. Totally worth the book hangover. Lace’s journey through a world full of secrets, betrayal, and hidden agendas felt so real. The worldbuilding blew me away—the way sexuality was written normalized the beauty of it, and the mix of magic and technology created a connection for me in the here and now. From the unique creatures, prophecies, dark romance, and funny banter, it is definitely a new favorite.
