Us Dark Few #2

Us Deadly Few

Rate this book
Khalani Kanes never imagined surviving Braderhelm Prison, let alone escaping to the desolate surface they had been told was uninhabitable. Haunted by the Governor of Apollo’s dark secrets, Khalani and her crew of criminals embark on a new perilous journey.

Now, the true test begins as Khalani ventures through the treacherous “Death-Zone” toward the nearest underground city, Hermes. Abandoned relics of a once-great nation are not the only threats on the barren road. Violent storms sweep across the Death-Zone, the deadly Takeshi Steele has resumed his cold detachment, and unsettling signs suggest they might not be alone on the surface.

To survive in this unforgiving world, Khalani must draw on her strength and harrowing experiences from Braderhelm. For a new kind of prison awaits in the corrupt city of Hermes—one where she finds herself trapped with the man who aggravates her the most. But this time, they’ll likely perish before escaping alive.

"Suddenly, Takeshi found a new purpose in prison. Khalani Kanes was it."

"He wanted to dive into her skin and memorize every freckle, bump, and imperfection—everything that made Khalani uniquely her—because every square inch was a masterpiece."

𐙚 Dystopian world
𐙚 Post-Apocalyptic
𐙚 Forced proximity
𐙚 Guard x Prisoner
𐙚 One bed
𐙚 Slow Burn
𐙚 Touch her and die
𐙚 Love/Hate relationship
𐙚 Found family
𐙚 Miscommunication

After escaping from the prison, Khalani and her group set out to reach Hermes. Their journey is fraught with danger, betrayal, and impossible choices. With tensions rising and secrets unraveling, Khalani must decide who she can trust as the fight for freedom grows even deadlier.

I think the first book will remain my favorite. The fact that it takes place in the prison might have a lot to do with it. But that doesn’t mean the second book is any less good! Far from it!

I equally loved devouring this book—it was a real pleasure. This book is a five-star read, just like the first one.

𐙚 Khalani and Takeshi

“No, I do,” she interrupted, needing him to understand. Khalani wouldn’t find closure unless she spoke her truth. “I know you have the biggest heart, because in another story, I would’ve wanted you to be my ending.”

And like a candle flickering in the dark, Takeshi let his bleeding heart spill on the floor next to hers. “In another story, you would’ve been my beginning.”

Once again, I loved their relationship. I love these two characters, so nothing has changed. The only thing that irritated me a bit was the miscommunication between them. I get that they both have their traumas, fears, and everything, but come on, sit down and talk????

Every time there was a moment of closeness between them, they were always interrupted, or some catastrophe happened right after…

I absolutely love how Takeshi is willing to do anything for Khalani, and I just love reading about their relationship.

They just belong together.

Let my babies live happily and together, please….

𐙚 Khalani and Winnie

“Khalani.” Winnie cupped a cold hand to her face. “Even those who feel the most can feel empty. Do you want to know what it means to be alive? It’s not perfection. It’s not being okay all the time. It’s having fears. Feeling like you aren’t good enough. Trying every day to be better. Your tears reflect how beautifully imperfect you are. What could be more human than that?”

I just adore the mother-daughter relationship they have. Winnie is so gentle and wise, and that’s exactly what Khalani needs.

𐙚 Takeshi and the group

One thing I need now is more interactions between Winnie and Takeshi. I need to see Winnie take on a motherly role for Takeshi as well. The little we got in this book was enough to make me soft.

I really love the fact that Takeshi is starting to have his own family, his own group. The poor guy deserves so much affection and support.

Brock and Takeshi’s relationship was so enjoyable to read. I really loved how Brock kept teasing Takeshi while still respecting him.

𐙚 Brock and Serene

I need them to be a thing. The man clearly has feeling for her ????

𐙚 The story in itself

I really enjoyed this book; it’s truly good. So, I don’t have much to say except that I wish we had gotten more information about Prometheus, the Helix project, and what the Governor really was.

I would’ve liked to see more progress on that front. At this point of the story, I’m worried the third book will be the last and might not be detailed enough. I’m afraid things will be wrapped up too quickly. In my opinion, two books would’ve been necessary to fully develop everything (so I’m hoping there will be a fourth one).

𐙚 The ending

Bahah, is this meant to kill me? Because there’s no way I can accept that ending.
As always, just when things start to get better, disaster strikes. But damn, I didn’t see this disaster coming either???

𐙚 Last words for this review

Oh please, Alexis Patton, give us the next book. I implore you, i need to know that my babies will have their happy ending !!!!!!!!

𐙚 Quotes

“Did I forget?” A bitter chuckle escaped him. “Unfortunately, no. I don’t think there’s any world where I could ever forget you. No matter what. Not even if I tried. And believe me, I have.”

“I’ve always been a good liar,” he whispered. Her brows pinched together. “What the hell does that mean?” “It means that no matter how many times I told myself we were done, I knew I’d never be over you. You’re the kind of special no one ever forgets.” His pitch-black eyes bore into Khalani, demanding that she listen. “I’ve tried very hard to keep my distance, but my control slips by the minute. When you look straight at me, all I want to do is finish what we started that night in prison and make you completely mine. So let me make one thing clear. It doesn’t matter what happens between us. From now until the day I bleed out, I will always want you. I will always keep you safe. Even if you weren’t mine,” he gritted his teeth, “I would still protect you. Just know that if anyone gave you so much as a paper cut, I would end their existence.”

“Aren’t you gonna touch me?” she challenged, a playful edge to her voice. “I’m enjoying the view.” “And what do you think?” “I think you’re mine.”

“You okay?” he asked. “Tired.” She stretched her arms over her head, resisting the urge to sink back down to the ground. “And you wanted me to keep you up all night.” A smirk tugged at his lips, and her heart sputtered. “Like you would’ve lasted that long,” she joked, lifting to her feet. “Oh, Kanes.” Takeshi let out a dark chuckle. “I can’t wait to make you choke on those words.”

“Why did you stop me from killing those two men earlier? Is it because you’re ashamed of my past? Of the things I’ve done?” A vulnerability he normally didn’t show pooled in his dark gaze as he waited for her answer. She considered his question, wanting to unbury her truths with him. “I’m not ashamed of your past, Takeshi,” she stated firmly. “We’ve all made mistakes. I stopped you because for too long, you’ve let the ugliness of this world define you. I realized that you’ve spent so much time watching over others that you forgot what it’s like to have someone protect you. And I thought… maybe I could be that person.”

Khalani accepted Takeshi for who he was, not who she wanted him to be. So, he was done. Done denying her. Done fighting this inexplicable pull between them.

It was very predictable, not as good as I remember the first one being but still enjoyable. The last 20 odd pages of the book were enough to make me interested in reading the third but if I’m being honest we spent way too much time with meaningless interactions and scenes that could have been cut and we could have had a duology. Tekashi and kelahni annoyed me so much it made me almost give this book 2 stars which is a shame because they were enjoyable in the first book. They’re supposed to be adults not 15 year olds, why is it that one second they are expressing that they like each other and then literally 2 pages later she’s making assumptions that he hates her based on what ? 😭 it just felt like the trope enemies to lovers was being forced to push a certain dynamic that just did not suit their characters and I felt like this overshadowed the actual plot of the story.

Anyways aside from that I hope that these things are rectified in the third and looking forward to see where the story finishes.

Truly only enjoyed the last like 30 pages.

The whole back and forth with our FMC & MMC is genuinely exhausting. They both tell each other they like each other but she has to be all “no he’s my enemy! He hates me!” Like what. And it’s just so predictable.

Also I think maybe sci fi just isn’t for me? If I think about it I might continue this but only if there’s a reminder when the next book comes out lol

What? What? No. NO! They were FINALLY…and then…uhhh, when does the next come out?

I couldn’t put this down. The world that Alexis built, the tension between Takeshi and Khalani, the banter between not just them, but ALL the characters, the feel of family cultivated in this story… its all amazing.

This truly had me laughing and then broke my heart. 💔

Can I rate this more than 5 stars? Is that possible?

I just can't with that ending 😫 I need the next book as badly as I need oxygen

I love every single character, the plot is even more intense than in book 1, the tension between Khalani and Takeshi is everything, and that cliffhanger felt like a stab to the heart, one I would gladly take over and over again. I will be counting down the days for book 3!

Wow this was a major disappointment and actually a bit of a shocker when it comes to spicy scenes - I thought this was YA/NA?!?

First of all, there was no coherent plot, just some wandering around the desert and finding new people who are all mysterious and then never finding out what they are doing and why...

The whole "plot" was just Khalani being whiny and stupid and pining over Takeshi. Why was the whole "will they, won't they" thing happening again when they already had so many romantic moments together and basically ended up together in the last book? It was super annoying.

Not to mention, I was NOT expecting all the open door scenes and had I known this series was taking a turn toward that, I would not have picked up this book...I am a YA reader and I prefer my books to be spice-less so if there are people out there thinking this book will be like the first one with just some kissing...brace yourselves 😂

This is not the main reason my rating is so low (but it is a part of it because the tags are all wrong and this series shouldn't be marked/promoted as YA), the main reason is the lack of basically anything important happening, repetitive scenes, all the macho crap and Khalani not having a single original or interesting thought...

who volunteers to plunge a knife into my heart? because it would hurt less than this. i’m still mentally screaming as i write this.

can i just start this off by saying takeshi save me… save me.. takeshi… takeshi save…me. but in all seriousness, i need him so badly it’s diabolical.

SPOILERS warning.

takeshi and khalani are the most unserious, frustrating, aggravating, heart-wrenching, but so-in-love-it-makes-me-dizzy couple i’ve ever read about. the way they both played with my emotions and left me an empty shell of a person, i need the third book now. maybe if these two didn’t dance around each other like they’re professional tango dancers maybe we wouldn’t be here. here: the state they left me in after finishing this.

it was frustrating at times; being stuck inside khalani’s brain because takeshi could literally rip his heart out and hand it to her, bloody and still beating and she would still think her feelings were one-sided. and he literally did. because what do you call not caring about the stench of someone who has not showered in weeks, has been going to the toilet in the sand with no toilet paper or toothpaste in sight, yet he still sucked on her boobs. i know they were both ripe and sour. that’s a man in love. the cat and mouse they were doing, i did want to pull on my hair. they lost so much time and it’s killing me.

i love them. i love them. i love them. their shift from i’ll kill you. to, i’ll kill for you.. was so full circle and pleasing to me. get you man who will put out someone’s bare eyeballs for you. get you a man who will slam a man’s arm in a car door for you. i usually find the protective trope icky but with takeshi, i felt as unhinged as him. i honestly don’t know how khalani didn’t jump his bones after every occasion. but she’s better than me because she saw more than his violence. she saw that he acted out with violence because of how he had to be. that scene where takeshi was fighting the two guards and she thought about how he told her all he wanted to do when he got older was paint and be a painter.. pain. they both see each other so beyond the surface, it makes me ache. we were going so well with the angry love confession and the ‘i love you’ but now we have the enemies to lovers to allies to strangers trope!? STOP. NOW.

”because in another story, i would’ve wanted you to be my ending,”

“in another story, you would’ve been my beginning.”

author, my therapy bill will be sent your way.

also, serena and brock, i see you. and i need more of them.

the plot was absolutely an up and down adventure. i didn’t really know where we were going to go because one second we’re in the desert, then a remote community in between a war for territory, then we get the place where they’ve been travelling to for weeks just to become spies and sentenced to a prison again with mad scientists.

that’s not to say that i wasn’t entertained. i was enjoying myself but at times i felt myself become less interested and more confused at the introduction of more characters when the characters that we already have, haven’t been fully explored. i am the biggest lover of the found family trope, but when i’m trying to find the personalities of khalani’s found family, i become disinterested. i could not tell you one thing about adan.

but with more books to come in this series, i am confident i will drop everything as soon as the new book comes out.

So first of All. I loved the first book.
This one was a bit different. I felt the writing was rushed and the connection btw the mmc and fmc not believable. She was denying any positive feelings from him and I just wanted to shake her. "He hates me but just looks after me because he wants to torment me" Girl please. It's just a personal no go from me.
I didn't understand the plot with the bandits and the gangs, yes it's for the future books, no questions, but I thought it didn't bring anything for this book. (Yes it showed other people survive on the surface)In my opinion it was just unnecessary and filler material.
I also saw the ending coming from the moment this Doctor got introduced. The mmc was the perfect soldier before so ofc he is gonna be the perfect subject. (Maybe the doctor is also a robot, all the twitching and weird speech)

What I did like is how khalanis trauma is portrait. Everything she encountered wasn't forgotten and she does relives moments and does not work on them.(bc they literally on the run)
I personally don't feel her connection or rather attachment to Winnie. I already didn't feel it in the first book.
I also liked that she isn't like a warrior queen super hero after some months of training like other fmcs.
I didn't get the part where she was declared there leader? Like hello the death zoner has all the knowledge and she can't make a decision at all.(only if she can offer herself or jump in and sacrifice herself) And how often is she gonna get beat up and saved by the mmc? AGAIN. I get it, he is so good and better then anybody else and the best and and and. It was a bit of a repetitive storyline.

So in conclusion it was a bit rushed therefore I didn't feel the connection between all the characters. The story was fine but a bit predictable (wich is not a bad thing ). It ended on an evil cliffhanger and I can't wait for the next book. I hope she takes more time writing it.

Adult Dystopian Romance

2.5 Stars ✨

“Some scars aren’t meant to be covered up. Our imperfections and wounds are what make us beautiful, not this perfect façade we try to show the world. We overcome obstacles by accepting the frailty of life and how precious it is. And for those we have lost, we carry on their memory and live the life they would’ve wanted for us.”

There were parts of this I liked, but I enjoyed the first one so much more. The two main characters back and forth made my head spin. Khalani drove me nuts for half of the book with how ignorant she was being. I just kept yelling at my kindle for them to COMMUNICATE. This installment seemed way more focused on the romance and push and pull of the MCs rather than plot. The plot is what intrigued me the most from book 1. It seemed like nothing exciting was happening until the last 30% of the book. Of course the cliffhanger has me interested to see how it all unfolds, but I’m sad - this had so much potential.

⚠️ Us Deadly Few is pitched as an Upper YA novel- but I’m personally going to call it NA due to adult themes, prison violence, sexual tension, open door situations and language.

First and foremost, thank you so much, Alexis, for giving me the incredible privilege of reading an ARC of Us Deadly Few. I literally screamed when I received my copy and am so grateful for the opportunity to dive into this story early!

I’ll do my absolute best to avoid spoilers in this review. To start, this book takes readers on an intense journey as the group navigates their harsh new reality topside. What stood out to me was how masterfully this book maintains the essence of the characters we loved in the first book while also deepening their personalities. I didn’t think it was possible to fall more in love with Kehlani and Takeshi, but here we are—and even the side characters from the first book are given moments to truly shine. There’s so much growth, friendship, pain, and uncertainty woven throughout these pages.

The political tension and constant fear of what tomorrow might bring feel so realistic, and the characters’ reactions are raw and relatable. The storyline absolutely blew me away. You meet so many new people and explore fascinating locations, some of which connect to real places, adding a sense of authenticity to the world. It makes everything feel vivid and easy to follow.

Now, onto my favorite part: the relationship between Kehlani and Takeshi. Wow. Buckle up because their journey in this book is an emotional rollercoaster. By the end, you’ll want to cry with them, laugh with them, and give them both a big hug. And that ending?! I don’t think I’ll ever sleep again.

This book is truly a masterpiece. It exceeded every expectation I had and stands as a worthy match to its incredible predecessor. I cannot wait for the third book and will be thinking about this story endlessly until its release.

Thank you again, Alexis, for sharing this world with us. I’m so proud of you and the unforgettable characters and universe you’ve created!

B R U H. What a sequel, I’m reading this as an ARC so I won’t say too much. But this book comes out 12/5/24 and if you guys read the first one, this one is going to send you. It was action packed, giddy some moments, heartbreaking other moments. T A K E S H I. THE MAN YOU ARE 👏🏻. My heart was so happy to see more interactions between Khalani and Takeshi unfiltered. I was even more happy to see such a family dynamic between everyone in the group. Ughhhhhhh how do I recover from the ending. I need the third book like I need air, now

Us Deadly Few was… honestly? A mixed bag. The world was cool, the tension was great, and the relationships had that addictive “we probably shouldn’t but we’re doing it anyway” thing going on. When the book clicked, it really grabbed me.

But the pacing?A mess.
Some chapters flew, others dragged so hard I felt like I was reading in slow motion. And the plot kept shifting vibes — dark romance? rebellion drama? emotional trauma Olympics? I never fully knew what lane we were in.
The characters had chemistry, but also made choices that made me pause and go, “Be serious right now.”

Overall: entertaining but chaotic, interesting but kinda uneven.
Good enough to finish, not strong enough to love.

This book. THIS BOOK. This book.

I will have to wrap my head around what I just read before I can write an actual review. 10/5 stars

**UPDATED REVIEW**

US DEADLY FEW picks up from where we left off in US DARK FEW, and it follows Khalani and her found family as they search for the truth about their world and how they might stop those wanting to keep mankind in chains (literally and figuratively). Through a series of twists and turns, they are led to the underground city of Hermes and are asked to complete a job for the answers they seek.

The found family dynamics in this book are top notch, the tension is tensioning, and the banter is *chefs kiss*. Patton's worldbuilding is outstanding—I could vividly picture every location in which Khalani and her friends found themselves. The book is perfectly paced. All of the characters come alive on the pages. This book is absolutely brilliant.

But we also need to talk about this relationship between Khalani and Takeshi. Miss Alexis, it is with the utmost respect and absolute love for you that I say this: You are mean, and I will never forgive you for breaking my heart the way you did. (Just kidding. You're amazing!)

Only one other book has been able to make me sob the way US DEADLY FEW did, and it was ACOMAF. The way my heart broke at the end of this book . . . there are actual tear stains on chapters 29 - 31.

I cannot say enough good things about this book, and Alexis Patton absolutely deserves 100% of the attention her books are garnering. If you have not yet begun the US DARK FEW series, you need to fix that immediately.

Where was the plot??? Because I swear I spent nearly 400 pages watching people wander through the desert.

And the FMC—oh god. She has to be one of the most delulu I’ve ever read. The way she keeps convincing herself that he doesn’t care for her was painfully exhausting! Also, why on earth couldn’t the FMC and MMC be together? There was zero logical reason for all that “we can’t” drama—just vibes and bad communication.💀

But what really gets me is how she’s somehow the leader. Like, we’ve got an engineer, a scientist, a thief, a freedom fighter, and a martial arts expert… yet the deeply traumatized girl who did some light weightlifting in prison is the one in charge?

“I would’ve wanted you to be my ending.”
“In another story, you would’ve been my beginning.”

Let me first say that I am deeply honored to have been an arc reader for this book. I’ve been waiting to read book two ever since I finished book one. One more chapter I told myself. One more chapter turned into more until I had to force myself to put it down and finish later but oh god, was this book stuck in my head wanting to know what happened more. The characters were going through so much and I was praying for them in the back of my head. Takeshi and Khalani are as amazing as ever and their banter and tension between them were 🔥🤭. The ending though. Oh god, my heart. This book was everything to me.

I can't even fathom any proper words right now. I am heartbroken by that ending. HEARTBROKEN. WDYM book 3 comes out in SEPTEMBER 2026!?!??!?! I'm going to do everything I can to get an early copy. This series has ruined me for anything else. Takeshi Steele is the loml and the definition of "touch her and die." the things he does for her if someone even glances at her wrong... 🥵 Khalani is my queen. One of my favourite new FMC's. The found family is EVERYTHING. The tension, the high stakes... everything was just FRICKING PHENOMENAL. New favourite series unlocked. Alexis Patton you are SO TALENTED. That ending... 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭🥺 I need book 3 ASAP

.my thoughts.
For someone who didn't enjoy the first book, and saw this appear 2 times the 2nd book, I decided that this was the chance I take to read this one, and honestly? This was actually average.

From the very start, this book starts off pretty well, making my hope ignite that this might turn out to be good, I loved the starting half, but it gets technically worse at times.

Takeshi and Khalani together can go in trash. I feel like without communication why the heck are they going intimate?? [Honestly I skipped that whole part because I didn't know this was actually there I'm too blind for warnings]. This major part is where I was instantly disconnected.

This book had so many quotes that I didn't get time enough to write, but enough to ponder on those, and that was the part I really think I was into it. Too many quotes lead to disconnection or someone thinking it's just poetry, but I rather enjoyed it.

The team together was a great achievement, I loved them as a whole. They had something to give on, and they did infact give me found family vibes🎀. not much to ponder on, but enough.

“You know,” Serene started, “I liked you a lot better when you didn’t speak.”
“I never liked you, period.”

Takeshi was one of the few people who kept her feet to the ground. Who reminded her to simply be present.

.final thoughts.
I still don't know what this book's plot was other than trading one prison to another and I really zoomed past it in the second half, I don't even want to talk about that ending. I genuinely won't complete this series that's for sure.

My soul needs a two week vacation from everything after reading this. The tension, the intensity, the laughs, the tears, the true enemies to lovers and found family drove this to the top of my list. THE CLIFFHANGERS!!!! My jaw hit the floor so many times it’s sore! I will never stop recommending anything and everything Alexis Patton writes. She’s a master of the enemies to lovers trope. It’s the tiny things that make me crave them, tiny glances and touches and of COURSE the touch her and ——— trope. Oh my lanta this book is crack in book form. The FMCs growth and inner strength is so inspiring, and the way the MMC has absolutely ZERO problem with it! I love how supportive he is whenever literally ANYONE else looks at her sideways!!!! Takeshi > Rhysand ALWAYS.
